Some say, imitationis the best form of flattery. Well thankyou then! But before this turns intoan obligatory thank you speech oftenseen at awards ceremony, let meproceed on with the rest of my note.Perfect 10. Why ten, you may ask?Besides often being associated witha flawless score, this also happens tobe our tenth issue. Hold your horsesthough, no way am I trying to implywe’re perfect. Truth is, we are hardlyeven close to being so. However,from how I see it, imperfection, issimply perfect. Let me explain further.Let’s be honest. Perfection is prettymuch unattainable. Despite being so,it is not uncommon for us to witnesssuch a chase for perfection even ineveryday situations.The chase to get the perfect mixof syrup and tea at Carl’s Jr drinksstation, the chase to nail that perfectlaunch down the drag strip, the chaseto get that perfectly styled hair thathas every strand in its correct place.You get it, don’t you?Many of them however, often endup as futile attempts to defy nature.But look at it this way, without erring,would you have realised too muchsyrup makes you want to regurgitate?That launching without an aftermarketclutch set is akin to attempting toslice through your steak with a butterknife? Or that gel and wax doesn’twork hand in hand, no matter howhard you try? My point being, onlyby failing, only by getting rebutted bymore experienced peers, then you willknow what truly went wrong.Imperfections serve as a catalyst forchange and the endless pursuit of itensures one will never be content,and will never stop trying.Being the editor, even silly spellingor grammatical errors pop up oncein a while. Certain content may nothave gone down well with you andopinions not received with a nod ofapproval. Held over the first weekend atSingapore EXPO Hall 5, AsiaAutoSalon 2011 certainlybrought in the crowd with itsmouth-watering showcaseof cars, babes and parts.The 3-day trade andexhibition event featurednumerous renownedautomotive and performancebrand names from all overAsia and even as far as theUnited Kingdom. Despitethe horrific disaster earlierthis year, exhibitors fromthe Land of the Rising Sun showedup in full force and brought alongtheir latest wares. Vendors fromneighbouring countries like Malaysiaand Thailand impressed the crowdas well. From a dedicated racinginstitute, Thailand’s Singha RacingSchool, to racing alternatives fromJasma, there was something instore for every car enthusiast.UK-based BW Chip Tune hadtheir knowledgeable staff onhand to educate the masseson the unique features of theirtuning software. It was not just afeast for the eyes, but one for themind as well.There was no lack of localpresence as well. ST Poweredproudly displayed their trackmachines, much to the delight ofmany. It is not everyday that onegets the chance to get up-close withthese fully-prepped rides and it wasnot one to be missed. Jeep CheeTrading’s wide range of exhaustsystems also caught the attentionof many. Not only do such systemsbring about a meaner exhaust note,they also improve the performanceof your ride. Gorgeous race queens werepresent at almost every other boothand photographers were constantlykept busy, snapping away at everyopportunity they could lay theirlenses on. You may,or may not agree with him, as stylingand power goals are issues whichI consider pretty personal. Dynoqueenrides may wow the crowd withtheir 800HP and 1000Nm figures,but try unleashing all that power ontight circuits and you’ll more oftenthan not find yourself sliding all overthe place. Likewise, chrome-trimmeddoor handles and window visors mayturn you on, but clean sleek lineswith touches of carbon fibre whetsmy appetite. In a nutshell, one man’smeat may be another man’s poison.Mk5But the question beckons, whatdo you do when presented withVolkswagen’s best selling model,the Golf? With over 27 million unitssold, one would find it hard to faultespecially since it has numerous bestcar of the year awards under its belt.Lyonel was faced with a similarquestion upon purchasing his GolfGTI Mk5. With looks and performanceeven in stock trim, it was an extremelywell-balanced ride. One wrong turndown Tuning Ave and it would bedeemed disastrous in the eyes of Golfpurists.Should you attempt to comb theWorld Wide Web for reviews on theGolf, you’ll probably have to spenda day going through every singleone of them. Here though, we bringto you Lyonel’s uncut and uneditedresponse which pretty much sums itall up. “I chose the Golf GTI because08 AUGUST 2011

Carbon is always love!Finely crafted GruppeM ram-air intakeit is an extremely well-built car. I havea cousin and aunt who are driving theGTI and they have nothing but praisesfor it. I decided to test drive it at theshowroom and I felt that no othernormal street car could come close toits power, handling and looks.”The stars eventually did align (notthat it happens very often nowadays)and the papers were signed. “I wasfortunate that COE prices were lowback when I got my GTI. It cost meless than $100,000 inclusive of a year’sroadtax.” We then started reminiscingabout the good old days were COEpremiums were reasonably-priced,unlike the astronomical asking priceof a piece of paper these days. At the front, a larger S3 intercoolerfurther lowers the intake temperaturebefore entry to the combustionchambers.Once combustion is complete,exhaust gases are taken care by afull 3” turbo-back exhaust systemfrom Eurojet that was personallybrought in by Lyonel himself. Stylingcue taken from the Golf R32 exhaustsystem sees the exhaust gasesexiting beneath the center of theAUGUST 2011 09

COVER CARFast Facts: VolkswagenGolf GTI 2.0A (Mk5)rear bumper via twin polished tips,instead of the conventional left sidedexit point.Rather than allow engine movementto make off with precious amountsof torque, a Neuspeed torque mountwas employed to ensure all is heldtightly in place. To fully extract theperformance his car was capable of,Lyonel handed the keys over to thecompetent tuners at Horizon AutoTuners (HAT). Upon completion ofthe stage 2 in-house tuning, the carnow has an output of 282bhp and410Nm of torque, as measured on arolling road.Now, let me first admit that I’ve athing for aftermarket brake kits henceit was of little wonder that what Ifirst noticed when I laid my eyes onthe car was its Brembo brake kit.Housed within 18” Advan RS rims,a set of Brembo RS5 8-pot calliperspaired with 365mm cross-drilleddiscs provides all the stopping powerLyonel will ever need. A customsilver top coat was applied to thecalipers, matching it perfectly withthe black rims and white body of theGTI. Elsewhere, HAT undercarriagemagic bars mated with a EibachPro System suspension kit workedtheir wonders in stiffening up thechassis and provided Lyonel with asharper steering response as well asimproved handling.Now that performance and ridecharacteristics have been improvedon, Lyonel then decided that it wastime to spruce up the interior andexterior of his ride. OSIR productswere chosen for most of theaesthetic enhancements. Theseinclude a front lip with a carbondiffuser, side skirts with carboninserts, carbon mirror covers and acarbon dashboard trim. Wrappingit all up (literally) are decals speciallycustomised by JJ Decalhub whichgives the car a stealthy black andwhite theme.Sprinting down the streetsWith the intention of building a dailydriven car that provides occasionalshort bursts of fun, the power curveof Lyonel’s GTI fits the plan like aglove. Due to thenature of his job, Jeremy comes intocontact with highly modified vehicleson a daily basis and the temptation todo up his ride soon kicked in.Well aware of the strict localregulations governing the modificationof vehicles, Jeremy decided to stick toa fully legal approach for his build. Noone likes to restrict themselves whenit comes to driving their precious ridejust to escape the eagle eyes of lawenforcers. Jeremy further emphasisedhis point, “One should enjoy his ridewhenever he wants to and not haveto play a game of hide-and-seek withour men in white. With my ride beingcompliant with LTA regulations, I canhave a peace of mind whenever I’mon the road.”Jeremy’s job at Fabulous-X gavehim the luxury of being able to selectfrom a wide range of products. D1Spec products suchas a fuel pressure regulator, oil coolerand crank pulley all work in harmonyin producing the linear torque curveof this ride. To ensure that the ridepasses the strict LTA requirements, afully-legal Drift Racing exhaust systemis picked instead of illegal aftermarketones. When extracting more horsesfrom an engine, you will inevitablysubject it to more abuse than what itwas originally designed for. To copewith the additional stress, Jeremy hadhis engine rebuilt and blueprinted tohis desired specifications. Ignition andfuel mapping is handled by a GreddyE-Manage Ultimate ECU and you’ll bepleasantly surprised at the number ofhorses it is currently putting down.Straight line speed wasn’t the onlyconcern that Jeremy had. The car hadto handle well through the corners andstop in a heartbeat as well. For that, aset of D1Spec Coilover, avariety of chassis stiffeningbars and a 6-pot brake kitfrom D1Spec were boltedonto the car. Sticky blackrubbers in the form ofToyo R1R aid in improvingtraction when riding on thetarmac.Cabin upgrades werealso introduced during thebuild. But are theyreally as simple as they seem?In modern day automotives, thewidespread use of the disc brakesystem is highly favoured due toits better stopping performanceas compared to brake fade-pronedrum brakes. However, periodicmaintenance and inspection of brakecomponents are extremely vital inensuring consistent performancefrom your brakes, regardless if they’redrum or disc systems.The caliper design of a disc brakesystem may consist of one, four, or upto twelve pistons that are hydraulicallyactuated to clamp onto a brake discand slow the vehicle down. Should itvaporise, the fluid will then becomecompressible, resulting in a severecompromise of braking performance.Most manufacturers recommendthat brake fluid should be flushed orchanged every 1 – 2 years. Due tothe fact that most brake fluids aresusceptible to absorbing moisturefrom the atmosphere, the moisturewhich is absorbed by the fluid willlower its boiling point and cause itto be corrosive. You wouldn’t wanta non-responsive brake pedal or adamaged ABS pump, would you?We recently had the chance to dropby BCC’s new Toh Tuck workshopto get a firsthand look at how properflushing of brake fluid should bedone. We had the honour of havingYuri from OWS, dressed in shirt,pants and tie, no less, performing thedemonstration.Firstly, the needed tools – a not-youreverydaypressurised bleeder, a brakefluid safety meter (more on that later),a container to store the contaminatedbrake fluid, OWS Uber Power RacingBrake Fluid and last but not least,white latex gloves.Next, we tested the boiling point ofthe vehicle’s old and dirty brake fluidusing the OWS brake fluid safetymeter. What it actually does is byusing a probe, it is able to analysethe boiling point of the brake fluid andtherefore letting you know if it hasbeen compromised. Results weresoon out, and they didn’t look toogood. The murky brake fluid failed thetest, registering a miserable 183°Cboiling point.So it was now time to purge out theold fluid, and replace it with OWSUber Power Racing Brake Fluid.This task was left in the experiencedhands of Yuri and his trusty and blingedout bleeder pump. New brake fluidwas poured into the bleeder and capswere tightened and checked beforepressurisation took place. Thereafter,the pump was attached to the mastercylinder and a Contaminated BrakeFluid catch “can” was attached tothe brake caliper bleeder valve. Thepressurised pump then forced outair bubbles as well as the old fluidwhile filling the lines and cylinderswith fresh ones. The old fluid wascollected via the bleeder valve andthe entire process took approximatelyten minutes.The same procedures were repeatedfor all four brakes and then it was timeto put the new fluid to the test. Onceagain, the brake fluid safety meterwas employed and the results wereextremely satisfactory. Surpassing thecommon dry boiling point of 230°Cfor DOT 4 fluids, the OWS UberPower Racing Brake Fluid registereda 245°C reading on the print out.Who knew something as simpleas brake fluid could make such adifference in the braking performanceof one’s ride? The brakepads will then clamp onto the brakedisc and the friction between them willslow the disc, and the car down.Should you require better stoppingpower, you can first look towardsa better initial bite and consistent andimproved braking performance even athigh operating temperatures. However,should you be into hard circuit driving,brake fade may creep in when repeatedhard braking causes a buildup of heat inthe braking surfaces.In order to prevent such an occurrencefrom happening, brake discs, otherwiseknown as brake rotors, can be upgradedto ones that aid heat dissipation. Factorydiscs are often blank discs that thoughserve their purposes, doesn’t dissipateheat very well. Performance discsdesign includes having holes drilledinto the discs. These holes improveheat dissipation and provide consistentbraking performance even under severeoperating conditions. Slots may also bemachined onto the disc to help removedust and gas and this allows the brakepads to “bite” better.Under hard braking, rubber factorybrake hoses often experience swellingwhich translates to a mushy pedalthey are also less prone to corrosion ascompared to their rubber counterparts.If you wish to take your ride’s brakingperformance to a whole new level, youwill be pleased to know that reasonablypricedaftermarket brake kits are easilyavailable these days. Upgrade yoursingle pot caliper to a 2, 4, 6, mini-6or even an 8-pot one and stomping onthe brake pedal will be a thing of thepast. The vibration willdisappear immediately when I move off. However, the vibration will come again when my car hits 100 km/h anddisappear again at 110 km/h. What is happening?You have 2 problems here. When you arestationary, the engine is idling at a lowRPM of around 650. The lower the rpm,the stronger is the shaking (vibration) of theengine. This vibration should be insulatedfrom the chassis by means of the rubberengine mountings.When these mountings are worn (eitherhardening or cracking), it loses its insulationcapability and thus transmits the vibrationto the chassis. The vibration will be feltat the steering wheel because of itscantilever design. The momentthe engine RPM increases,the shaking frequency willincrease and thus the amplitude (strength)of the vibration will reduce.Your 2nd problem should be an out ofbalance wheel. When a wheel is out ofbalance, it will create a centrifugal forcewhen it rotates. Depending on the offsetweight, it will have a resonance frequencywhich means that the vibration will be thestrongest at a certain rpm range. When outof this RPM range, vibration felt will be less.The solution here is to replace the enginemountings and perform a high speed wheelbalance.Q: I was recommended to remove my catalytic converterby a workshop. They said that it will improve the power bymiles. Is it true and is it good?Q: I intend to change my spark plug to a better grade, what kindsare available and what should I look out for?There are many sizes for sparkplugs: electrode design andmaterial and heat range.The main aim that we wantto achieve when choosinga spark plug is to maintainthe combustion chambertemperature between 500– 850°C. If your engine isnot modified, generally youshould use the heat rangerecommended by the enginemanufacturer. The size ofthe spark plug should not bechanged.For better power, we usuallylook for a higher intensity spark(the duration of the sparkis controlled by the ECU).Generally, the finer the Electrodetip, the higher the intensity. Butthat will also mean a fasterburn out of the spark plug tip.Therefore, the tip material mustbe able to withstand the heatproduced. These materials areiridium, platinum, silver, etc.Hotter plug means slowertransfer of heat out of thecombustion chamber. When thechamber is overheated, seriousconsequences like gasketblowing and bearing fusing mayoccur.Colder plug means fastertransfer of heat out of thecombustion chamber. Whencombustion temperature is toolow, incomplete burning of air/fuel mixture will create soothwhich fouls up the spark plugand combustion chamber easily.It will also cause difficulties instarting your car in the morning.First and foremost, I do not recommendremoving the catalytic converter (CC).The reasons are because firstly, itis illegal and secondly, we need toprotect Mother Earth for our childrenand their children. There are manyother adverse consequences likethe Check Engine Light showing up,higher fuel consumption and bad lowend drive.When the Catalytic Converter isremoved, the exhaust gas will notbe converted to a less harmful gas.The Oxygen level read by the 2ndO2 Sensor (B1S2), which is locatedafter the CC, will be similar to thatof the 1st O2 Sensor (B1S1). Whenthe composition of the exhaustgas detected is similar over a fewcycles, the ECU will deduce that theCC is inefficient and not functioningcorrectly. In order to save the CC,the ECU will then inject more petrolto lower the combustion temperaturetherefore you will experience higherfuel consumption and lower enginepower (low end).38 AUGUST 2011

We bring you the full coverage of the hottest,rarest cars which made their appearance in London.When it was time for the cars to roll outof Covent Garden to begin their journey,photographers were already camped inthe best spots to take the cars passingby. Although the search was difficult,I managed to plant myself at a crossjunctionwhere the cars definitely hadto turn from to get to the main road. Iwasn’t disappointed as they startedcoming one by one, although theunpredictable weather meant I wasdrenched by the time the last car spedpast me. Still, it’s something worthsitting in the rain for.The crowds cheered on for the drivers toshow what their cars can do, so someplayed along and showed us someburn outs and brief oversteer moments.In general, the drivers were a prettycivilised bunch, not least because ofthe complaints they received in the pastfor being a rowdy bunch. SPORTSPETETHONGCHUA:CELEBRITY DRIVERHe was once the top actor in Bangkokand graces magazine covers till today,even though he was never reallyinterested in the entertainment scene.Pete Thongchua, now 43 years oldwith three children in tow, still holds hisevery bit of his boyish charm and cooldemeanour. Although he is no longer atthe peak of his acting career, he has noqualms about it as he has been and stillis living his motorsports dream.His father was a rally car driver andhas businesses directly related tomotorsports, but sadly, Pete neverreceived a single cent or even an ounceof support from his dad for his motorracing involvements. Always a big fan of engines!Pete’s lucky number is #17.Q: What was your first motorsportsencounter?A: I was born in the United States, but Imoved back to Thailand with my familyat the age of six and a half. When I wasseven, I watched my dad race and Iwas very curious about it. However, myfather never approved of me being inmotorsports and till today he has neverbought me a car or even given me anymoney for racing.Q: So how did you get yourself intomotorsports?A: This is quite a long story: When Icame back to Thailand, I was pickedout to be a child actor and model and Imanaged to save up enough money tosend myself back to the States when Iwas 13. I went to an academy of arts inSan Francisco to study graphic designand I used to go street racing duringhigh school days!Later, my father’s friend planned toopen a bar there so I went to take upa degree in bartending, but in the endhe set up a restaurant instead. I didn’twant to waste my bartending degree soI went to find a job at a bar operated bya young Thai couple.My boss was a fan of racing and oneday he took me to a track, tossing methe key to his souped-up Mazda RX-7. I was only 17 years old then, andhave never driven his car before but hesigned me up for a race anyway. I wasthe only Japanese car entry and I spunat the start as I was overwhelmed bythe power, but I managed to come infourth.Time for a joyride with Pete!Q: What a nice boss you had! He gaveyou your first taste of real racing at thetrack! What happened next?A: He continued to lend me his car torace but there came a point to go on tothe next level and that meant a need toupgrade the performance of the car. Hecouldn’t finance that as his partner wasagainst racing, but anyway I decided toreturn to Thailand at 22 years old.In 1994, I took part in a formula carrace without any sponsors and I wonmy second race. I caught the attentionof TOTAL Lubricants and they said ifI win the series they will sponsor meand move me to touring cars. IndeedI won the series and they kept theirword, so I drove for the Singha NationalPanasonic Team for two years beforeI switched teams to Spoon Sports forthe next three years.Then the Toyota factory team pickedme up and I drove for them for eightyears in one-make races, GT races,touring car races and even supertrucks. Thereafter I started my ownteam and Mazda came in to back meup. It’s been six years since I’ve beenworking with Mazda. With the team Itake part in Super Cars Thailand, theAll-Thailand Cross-Country Rally (whichI won in 2008 and 2009) and other GTcar races.Q: What about drifting?A: I actually learnt drifting way back in1997 when I was still driving for SpoonSports. I was sent to Ebisu, Japan fora month to learn drifting from TeamOrange drifters Nobushige Kumakubo(who later became 2006 D1GPchampion) and Kokushi. However, Inever competed in drifting until lastyear when I joined the local drift seriesM-Max Speed Party and All StarProfessional Drift Thailand. This year Iam competing in the same series again.Q: Between motorsports and acting,which do you prefer?A: My whole life has always revolvedaround cars and I’ve always preferredmotorsports to the entertainment scene– like 80-20. I started acting in TVcommercials at the age of seven whenI first returned to Thailand. When I wentto the States again I thought that wasit for my little acting career. But whenI returned, the scene still wanted meand I actually became quite a hardcoreactor. I like cars better and there weretimes when I wanted to quit the scenebut they wouldn’t let me!Q: Do you still act these days?A: I stopped acting full-time nine yearsago but have made the occasionalguest appearances. I got marriedabout 10 years ago, then I quit actingand headed to Los Angeles in 2002with my wife to produce a Thai movie“Province 77” which is about Thai subcultureand hip hop. I haven’t acted ina long time, until last year when I tookon a comeback role in a TV series as afavour to my friend, and now there’s myown show.Q: What do you do when you are notfilming, drifting or racing?A: I have a workshop RZ Racing anda company that does road shows andevents for the automotive industry andwe also help to produce prototypes.Pete learned drifting from Japanese pro Kumakubo.Q: For someone your age, you reallyknow how to keep fit. What are yoursecrets?A: I’ve never been to the gym in my life!I do a lot of BMX biking and go-karting,but I think it is my work and my threeprecious ones who keep me fit. I havethree children – my daughters Seya andMeya who are six and four years oldrespectively, and my son Rotor who’stwo and a half years old. Yes I namedhim Rotor as in rotary engines becauseI love them!Q: Will you let your son get intomotorsports or do you share the samethoughts as your dad?A: For sure I will let my kids go racing;already the three of them have beenfollowing me to my races. One thing –my kids must know how to drive fasterand better than other kids. Whetherthey want to go racing or not, I let thempick what they want to do with theirlives.Q: What’s the toughest challenge in life?A: Life is unpredictable and we neverknow what’s going to happen, somaking every moment of every day thebest moment is something that I try todo, but it’s not easy to maintain the bestevery single day.
