PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2010-2011
2010 – 2011 was a year of change and growth for IIS.
It was a year of change as our manager, Joanne Duke, retired around this time last year.
We hired Maria Cowper and, even with a steep learning curve, she has done extremely
well learning the position and has continued the IIS tradition of providing great service to
our members.
This past year was a breakthrough year for the IIS; our numbers grew in all areas.
Membership hit an all time high of 1009.
The Institute saw an increase in membership this past year primarily due to retirements
within the industry as well as a more concentrated membership drive in cooperation with
IIC. Membership over the years is as follows:

This year we had 330 students registered for classes in Regina and Saskatoon an
increase of 7.14% from last year. The compressed classes have been successful and well
attended, however due to the increase in workloads it has been difficult for managers to
have their staff gone for 6 consecutive days and IIS has been requested to offer C11 only
as a compressed class. As a result we ran our first ‘Weekend Warrior’ classes where the
class has been compressed into a couple of weekends. The response from the students
has been extremely positive and we look forward to continuing offering classes in this
format. Many thanks to the instructors who gave their time and expertise to help our
students succeed in their education.
Due to the growth of the institute, IIC agreed to provide a shared resource to assist Maria
allowing her to dedicate more time to marketing our program to various organizations.
Effective April 1, 2011, Carlie Noland has been working with Maria for one day a week out
of the Edmonton office.
Several Career Fairs were attended this past year. IIS had a booth at the University of
Regina career fair in September as well as the University of Saskatchewan. IIS also
attended a SIAST career fair in Moose Jaw in February.
We continue to have a close relationship with IBAS, this past year we sponsored their golf
tournament with a $10,000 Hole-in-One, and attended the IBAS Broker’s convention in
Regina. We have also worked to provide a number of seminars jointly to the industry this
past year – thus allowing us to service our membership jointly in a cooperative manner as
opposed to a competitive one.
We continued to support the Ross Barlow Memorial Blue Goose Curling Bonspiel for the
second year and look to make this an annual sponsorship.

We looked at our marketing of the CIP Designation and decided that a change in direction
was required. For the first time, we are now advertising on digital billboards in Regina,
Saskatoon and Moose Jaw. The advertising is more progressive and the locations chosen
reflect the commuting routes of most professionals for each city. We are hopeful that
through continued advertising, the CIP brand will become much more recognized. We will
continue to look at other forms of media to promote the CIP designation as the leading
designation for the insurance industry.
At the AGM for IIC, Karen Prychitko, was nominated and approved for the Award of Merit.
The Award of Merit is the most prestigious non-academic award conferred by the Board of
Governors. The formal presentation was provided at our convocation ceremony in
Saskatoon this past November. Karen is a tireless supporter of IIS in terms of seminar
presentation and class instruction. Congratulations Karen, it is well deserved!
Last year, we advised that talks were continuing with SIAST to provide an Insurance
Diploma program. I am pleased to advise that this has come to fruition. The program took
their first 22 students this past fall. Those students took C11 during this winter semester.
There are too many people to mention who worked on this initiative, but they know who
they are. I have to acknowledge the financial support that was provided by SGI for this
program, which was essential to ensure it moved forward, as well as to a number of the
other insurers (SMI, Wawanesa and Cooperators) that came to provide support in terms of
work placements. With an aging industry in Saskatchewan the days of ‘falling into’ the
insurance industry is over and we have to actively market our industry to the next
generation to attract new talent. I view this program as a vehicle to assist in sustaining a
healthy and vibrant insurance industry in Saskatchewan.
As with every non profit organization in Canada, maintaining a strong and vibrant Board
providing a meaningful presence to its membership is challenging. Work and family
commitments are increasing, not decreasing, for most, and it takes dedication to commit to
these roles that make up our board. I want to thank the IIS board for their continued
diligence to the Institute and to our industry. Jennifer Meshka, Lisa Todd, Crystal
Stroeder, James Toothill, Mike Hordichuk, Pat Lawlor, Brad Fraser, Lee-Ann Ross, Crystal
Syrenne, and Cherie Grunert gave valuable time to serve on our Board and my thanks
goes out to each one of you.
I would like to thank all the employers for supporting IIS and allowing their employees the
time to attend our functions, take classes or volunteer on the Council. I believe we have
solidified our reputation in the insurance industry in Saskatchewan. IIS has become a
leader among other Institutes across Canada. We are using new technology to provide
seminars and courses, our membership growth leads the country, and we are providing
courses in formats that better fit the lifestyles of our students. I look forward to watching us
continue leading the country.

Report of the Academic Division
This past year we offered 36 classes in total with a total of 330 students. The following
outlines our accomplishments:

IIS experienced growth of 7.14% in students taking CIP classes despite the original
forecasted decline of class enrollment for 2010-2011. The 2010-2011 total CIP students in
our membership is 483 compared to 319 in 2009-2010 which is a growth of 51.4%.
We successfully held a total of 36 CIP courses this year. Part of this success is due to
offering more courses both in Regina and Saskatoon. In addition, we offered, for the first
time in Saskatchewan a new compressed format called ‘’ weekend warrior’’, which was a
huge success. We have received numerous requests from students to continue with this
format.
We anticipate IIS will continue to offer more courses and offer many more formats to
service the needs of our students. Therefore, we are optimistic that we will continue to see
growth.

Exams
Government issued photo id was a requirement to write the exam which was implemented
for exams in December 2010. Exam sessions went smooth.

Convocation
Our convocation ceremony took place in Saskatoon this past November. This evening
event began with cocktail reception, followed by dinner and the awards ceremony. We
used professional programs ordered through IIC and added a touch of class by having a
harpist play during reception and supper. It was a very nice event! A total of 93 people
were in attendance.
SIAST Initiative
IIS has entered into an exciting venture with SIAST. The program was launched in
January of 2011 which initially brought in 22 full time students. I wish to thank SGI for the
support received and I look forward to receiving support from the other industry partners in
the near future.
In closing, on behalf of the Insurance Institute of Saskatchewan, I would like to thank the
instructors, proctors, students and the Academic committee for their help and support in
offering classes throughout Saskatchewan this past year. I also wish to extend our
continued gratitude to Saskatchewan Government Insurance for allowing the use of their
facilities for our examinations.

Report of the Professional Division
The Professional Division of the IIS is responsible for planning and marketing educational
seminars throughout the IIS fiscal year, which is April 1 to March 31. This 2010-2011 fiscal
year a total of 16 seminars compared to a total of 9 seminars in 2009-2010 which is an
increase of 78% over last year. 2010-2011 seminar attendance was 252 members.

1) Call to order
The Annual General Meeting of the Insurance Institute of Saskatchewan was called to
order by President Jennifer Meshka, CIP at 10:35am

The notice of the Annual General Meeting was read by Maria Cowper
3) Reading of the Minutes of Previous Meeting
The minutes of the 2009 Annual General Meeting were circulated to and read by those in
attendance.

4) Presidents report – Jennifer Meshka, CIP
Jennifer touched on many topics such as IIC undertaking all of the accounting functions
which had a positive impact as it lessened the workload of local institute managers to the
successful events IIS held the past year. Jennifer also commented on the new FCIP
program which will be launched this year. There were several career fairs and new
seminars that proved to be successful. Jennifer also discussed decreased growth in
membership in the past year due to many factors such as a decrease in students and
compressed courses.
