The building that has housed these newspapers for decades does notprovide a good storage environment for them. The newspapers tend to be quitebrittle and some have suffered water damage due to previous flooding. It isimportant that they be preserved. It is possible that many of these newspapereditions are not held by any other institution. On behalf of the UCAMA boardof directors, I thank the Shevchenko Foundation for allowing us to carry out thisimportant preservation project. UCAMA’s limited operations budget would nothave allowed the archive-museum to carry out this project on its own.Sincerely,Greg BorowetzChaban Ukrainian Dance Group is grateful forthe financial support provided by the ShevchenkoFoundation that launched the re-design of ourwebsite and made possible the purchase of somemuch-needed promotional materials. Chabanis excited to have the Foundation’s support toenhance our web presence to showcase thecultural beauty, regional differences andbackground of Ukrainian dance to all whohave access to the internet. The web re-designstarted in the summer of 2011 with the migrationof information from Chaban’s existing website.New information is being uploaded duringthis 2011–12 season as we work withprofessional photographers for dynamic actionshots and updates to our costume inventory, keeping in mind our objective of promotingUkrainian culture through dance and the visualrepresentation of our art form. The final aspectof this project will be the completion of portablebanners to display at our Folklore booth, for example, and when we travel for culturalevents. Once again, we thank the Foundationfor its support in making this dream a realityfor Chaban.WALTER HALCHUK MEMORIALBOOK AWARD 2012Walter Halchuk enjoyed reading about history and was anactive member of the Ukrainian Canadian community.Through a book award in his memory, the ShevchenkoFoundation wishes to highlight both these passions. The Walter Halchuk Memorial Book Award was establishedafter his passing in 2004.
