PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEЗвернення президента2 |Just over 49 years ago a group of visionaryUkrainian Canadians initiated a neworganization to address a growing need inthe Ukrainian Canadian community. Thesevisionaries knew that the expansion of thecommunity through multiple generationsin Canada would result in a large number ofcultural activities in Canada and beyond andas a result the Shevchenko Foundation wasformed. The first imperative in the early dayswas to create a self-sustaining organizationdedicated to maintaining the UkrainianCanadian cultural identity and sense ofcultural purpose in a dynamic Canada whichhad become the chosen homeland for manyUkrainians and their succeeding generations.Over the past 49 years the Foundation hasparticipated in hundreds of projects andcountless successes which represent a trulywide and deep cultural heritage in ourcommunity. Over its lifetime the ShevchenkoFoundation has provided over 9 milliondollars of support to the UkrainianCanadian community.Having travelled to Ukraine on more than oneoccasion in the past year I have been contactedby many Ukrainians in the Diaspora askingfor tips or help on how to establish similarfoundations beyond Ukraine. In this regardthe Shevchenko Foundation is a leader forthe entire Diaspora and the credit for thisleadership rests foremost with the donorswho place their trust in a vibrant Board ofDirectors, a committed voluntary InvestmentCommittee headed up by Mr. Wally Shoemayand of course our wonderful staff at ourWinnipeg office headed by our ExecutiveDirector, Ms. Lesia Szwaluk.The needs of the Ukrainian Canadiancommunity have evolved and so has thestrategy of the Shevchenko Foundation inmeeting those needs. The ShevchenkoFoundation has initiated a strategy forproviding grants to qualify grantees infour key areas:Our Arts Program recognizes the value of thearts as a fundamental aspect of expressingunique cultural identity by promoting thecreation, advancement and disseminationof Ukrainian Canadian artistic endeavourthroughout Canada. This is reflected bygrants in the areas of the literary arts, music,theatre, visual arts, dance and media arts.The second pillar of our granting strategyis the Educational Program. Through thisprogram the Foundation seeks to increaseand disseminate knowledge of all aspectsof Ukrainian life in Canada throughtraditional and non-traditional educationalprogramming and by assisting resource andcurriculum development in both public andcommunity-based schools. We also supportcreative initiatives in educational programs,professional development for educators,the teaching of Ukrainian language andUkrainian Canadian subjects at the postsecondarylevel, and the publication ofscholarly works on Ukrainian and UkrainianCanadian topics. In addition, the EducationProgram provides for a wide-ranging bursaryprogram for students pursuing graduatestudies in Canada at the MA or PhD levelin a recognized Ukrainian or UkrainianCanadian discipline as well as meeting theneed for bursaries for undergraduate studentsstudying in a language program in Ukrainethrough an accredited Canadian university.The Foundation has also pioneered theCommunity Development Program. We arecommitted to the sustainability of a vibrantand flourishing Ukrainian community inCanada through the fostering of a sense ofcommon identity and fellowship, participationin community life and the strengthening ofcommunity organizations. This includessupporting programs operated by the UkrainianCanadian Congress, national communitydevelopment projects of Ukrainian Canadianorganizations and local community initiativesvia local festivals, community concerts andactivities of local organizations.Finally, the Foundation wishes to strengthenour Ukrainian Canadian identity throughour Heritage Program which will ensure thatthe history of the Ukrainian community inCanada is preserved and that the importantsources of Ukrainian Canadian history arenot lost to future generations. This involvesgrants for research, writing and publicationsof the histories of local communities,support for published works on the historyof Ukrainians in Canada for both scholarlyand mass audiences, the development ofexhibitions and events for the display ofarchival sources and artifacts, the acquisitionsby recognized and established institutionsof heritage items or collections at risk andultimately providing support to existing andestablished institutions of archival repositories,museums, libraries, art galleries and researchprograms.To be the President of a prestigiousorganization that has these important coreobjectives is truly humbling. Our goals areonly matched by the incredible output anddemand by Ukrainian Canadians in all ofthese areas where our four programs arededicated. All of this effort takes volunteertime and money. Thankfully, our UkrainianCanadian community is very generous inthe work of its volunteers and the financialgenerosity of our individuals is certainly wellknown. Unfortunately, to meet the needs andexpectations of our community, I must saythat we do not have sufficient resources tofully actualize all of the programs in amanner that would bring the greatestamount of return to our community.Ongoing fundraising events and activities arecritical to the continuation and sustainabilityof the Shevchenko Foundation and withoutthis ongoing effort many of the abovedescribed programs would simply ceaseto exist or would not be funded at all.Over the course of 49 years the hopes of theShevchenko Foundation have remained aliveand vibrant. It is an honour to have beenchosen lead volunteer and President of theFoundation to carry forward these hopes anddreams. With the continued support of ourUkrainian Canadian community we willendure in preparing a firm foundation forour organization as it anticipates thecommencement of its next half centuryof activity.God bless all of you and your families andonce again a sincere thank you for yourcontinuing support.Andriy Hladyshevsky, Q.C.presidentБільше як 49 років тому групадалекоглядних українців Канадизаснувала нову організацію длявирішення зростаючих потребукраїнсько-канадської громади.Напочатку найважливішим завданнямбуло створення самостійної організації,що займається підтримкою українськоканадськоїкультурної самобутностіі почуття культурного призначенняв динамічному суспільстві Канади,що стала обраною батьківщиною длябагатьох українців і їхніх нащадків.За останні 49 років ШевченківськаФундація брала участь у багатьохуспішних починаннях, в сотняхпроектів, що дійсно репрезентуютьшироку і глибоку культурну спадщинуукраїнсько-канадської громади і надалапонад 9 мільйонів доларів на підтримкуукраїнсько-канадської громади.Багато разів я отримував запитаннявід українців з діаспори, які просилидопомоги або поради в тому, щобстворити подібні фундації за межамиУкраїни. В цьому сенсі ШевченківськаФундація є провідником для всієїдіаспори і заслуга в цьому належитьперш за все нашим жертводавцям, якідовіряють Раді Директорів, відданомудобровільному Комітету з Інвестиційпід керівництвом пана Валлі Шумея і,звичайно, нашим чудовимспівробітникам в нашому бюрі уВінніпезі на чолі з ЕкзекутивнимДиректором, пані Лесею Швалюк.Шевченківська Фундація ініціюваластратегію на майбутнє щодо наданняґрантів для претендентів в чотирьохключових ділянках:Мистецька Програма, яка визнаєцінність мистецтва як фундаментальногоаспекту вираження унікальноїкультурної ідентичності шляхомсприяння створенню, просуванню іпоширенню українсько-канадськоїхудожньої творчості в усій Канаді. Цезнайшло своє відображення у ґрантахв галузі літератури, музики, театру,образотворчого мистецтва, танцю тамедіа-мистецтва.Друга підвалина нашої стратегії наданнягрантів – це Освітня Програма. Знанняукраїнської мови, культури та історії єважливими складовими ідентичностіукраїнської громади в Канаді. ЧерезОсвітню програму ми намагаємосязбільшити та поширити знання про всіаспекти українського життя в Канаді задопомогою традиційних і нетрадиційнихосвітніх програм. Започатковуютьсяініціативи в освітніх програмах,забезпечується професійний розвитокпедагогів, викладання українськоїмови і українсько-канадських курсівна університетському рівні, надаютьсясубсидії на створення та визнанняакадемічних видавців в Канаді дляпублікації наукових праць з українськоїта україно-канадської тематики. Крімтого, Освітня програма передбачаєшироку систему стипендій для студентів,які навчаються в аспірантурі в Канадіна здобуття звання Магістра (MA) чидоктора (PhD) з визнаної українськоїабо українсько-канадський дисципліни.Також надається підтримка у формістипендій для студентів, що навчаютьсяу мовній програмі в Україні черезакредитовані канадські університети.Програма Суспільного Розвиткуорієнтована на сталий розвитокенергійної і процвітаючої українськоїгромади в Канаді шляхом підтримкипочуття спільної ідентичності ібратерства, участі у громадськомужитті та зміцненні громадськихорганізацій, в тому числі через програмиКонґресу Українців Канади, проектинаціонального громадського розвиткуукраїнсько-канадських організацій тамісцевих громадських ініціатив, щозабезпечують відчуття спільності черезмісцеві фестивалі, громадські концертита діяльність місцевих організацій.Нарешті, Шевченківська Фундація хочезміцнити нашу українсько-канадськуідентичність через Програму Спадщини,яка гарантуватиме збереження історіїукраїнської громади в Канаді і те, щоважливі джерела української історіїКанади не будуть втрачені для майбутніхпоколінь. Ця програма включає всебе ґранти для наукових досліджень,написання і публікації історій місцевихгромад, підтримку публікації робіт зісторії українців у Канаді, організаціївиставок та заходів для демонстраціїархівних джерел та експонатів і, нарешті,через надання певної фінансовоїпідтримки існуючим установам.Бути Президентом такої престижноїорганізації, що має такі важливізавдання – це висока честь. Нашагромада отримує дуже щедру допомогузавдяки роботі своїх волонтерів дляШевченківської Фундації. Безумовно, єдобре відомою фінансова щедрість осібнашої громади. На жаль, у нас немаєдостатніх ресурсів для задоволенняпотреб та очікувань української громади,щоб повністю реалізувати всі програмиу такий спосіб, щоб вони принеслинайбільший зиск українсько-канадськійспільноті. Заходи по збору коштів маютьвирішальне значення для продовження іжиттєздатності Шевченківської Фундаціїі без цих постійних зусиль зі збору коштівбагато з вищеописаних програм простоперестане існувати.Протягом 49 років надії ШевченківськоїФундації залишалються живими ісповненими сил. Для мене, як дляпровідного волонтера, дуже велика честьбути обраним Президентом Фундаціїз тим, щоб просувати вперед ці надії імрії.
