<strong>HHL</strong> Award: Ready for Business<br />

Sachsen GmbH, <strong>HHL</strong> awarded the<br />

Ready for Business founder prize to ARSOlux<br />

GmbH in September 2010. Entrepreneur<br />

Sonja Hahn-Tomer deeply impressed the<br />

jury consisting <strong>of</strong> <strong>HHL</strong>’s Executive <strong>Management</strong><br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dr. Arnis Vilks (Dean) and<br />

Dr. Judith Marquardt (Chancellor), the Head <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>HHL</strong>’s International Entrepreneurship Program,<br />

Dr. Stefan Stubner, and the CEO <strong>of</strong><br />

Businessplan-Wettbewerb Sachsen GmbH,<br />

Kerstin Trautmann, with her business model<br />

for selling a new and patented measuring<br />

sensor for detecting arsenic pollution in<br />

drinking water and groundwater.<br />

An estimated 50 million people around the<br />

world suffer from polluted water. Hahn-<br />

Tomer emphasizes the importance <strong>of</strong> her<br />

business: “Clean water is essential for a full<br />

life. ARSOlux provides robust, precise and<br />

easy-to-handle biosensors which facilitate<br />

a fast and economical analysis <strong>of</strong> arsenic<br />

and other chemicals in water.” The innovative<br />

venture is backed by the Helmholtz<br />

Centre for Environmental <strong>Research</strong> – UFZ.<br />

The <strong>HHL</strong> Award is intended to help promis-<br />

ing entrepreneurs on their path to success<br />

by <strong>of</strong>fering them knowledge and skills to<br />

advance their businesses. Thus, the prize<br />

is a module <strong>of</strong> the <strong>HHL</strong> MBA Program:<br />

“Managing New Ventures & Growth”, “Man-<br />

aging Customers, Employees, Processes”<br />

or “Managing Society”. After picking<br />

up the award, Hahn-Tomer said: “I am delighted<br />

to receive the <strong>HHL</strong> Award: Ready for<br />

Business, especially since the ARSOlux<br />

business model improves access to clean<br />

water, a universal human right which was<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficially recognized by the United Nations<br />

only last July.”<br />

<strong>HHL</strong> News – wiNter 2010/2011<br />

<strong>HHL</strong> MBA student wins 3 rd prize at<br />

Buse Awards 2010<br />

Marko Krause (M11) has been awarded third<br />

prize in the Buse Awards 2010 essay competition.<br />

The prize, which is worth EUR 500, is<br />

awarded by the firm <strong>of</strong> solicitors Buse Heberer<br />

Fromm and GoingPublic Magazin in collaboration<br />

with the European Law Students Association<br />

(ELSA) and the Bundesverband der Börsenvereine<br />

an deutschen Hochschulen e.V. (BVH). As<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the best five writers, Krause was invited<br />

to the prize-giving ceremony in Lisbon on<br />

September 18, 2010, and presented his essay<br />

on the topic <strong>of</strong> “Regulations for Credit Rating<br />

Agencies” to the jury in person. Extracts <strong>of</strong> the<br />

three winning essays were published in<br />

GoingPublic Magazin.<br />

<strong>HHL</strong> at the <strong>Research</strong>ers’<br />

Night in <strong>Leipzig</strong><br />

Almost all <strong>of</strong> <strong>Leipzig</strong>’s academic institutions<br />

participated in the second <strong>Research</strong>ers’ Night<br />

on September 24, 2010, and <strong>HHL</strong> was <strong>of</strong><br />

course among them. The business school<br />

presented projects under the slogan “Ideas<br />

and strategies for intelligent energy solutions”<br />

at City Campus in Katharinenstraße. In the<br />

course <strong>of</strong> the night, <strong>HHL</strong> held three presentations<br />

on saving energy and renewable energy.<br />

One was given by the student initiative <strong>HHL</strong><br />

Energy Club, which introduced its work as a<br />

forum for discussing energy-related topics.<br />

<strong>HHL</strong> students successful in EXIST business game competition<br />

Sarah Jentzsch, Christian Hetke and Dennis<br />

Grosche, students in <strong>HHL</strong>’s M.Sc. class MSc4,<br />

won the Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Cup East in the nationwide<br />

business game competition EXIST-priME-<br />

Cup. 12 teams from entrepreneur-oriented<br />

universities competed in the computer-based<br />

business game focusing on “Succession in<br />

Enterprises”. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Duttle, manager <strong>of</strong> the<br />

event, particularly praised the fairness and the<br />

strong work commitment <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Leipzig</strong> team.<br />

At the beginning <strong>of</strong> October, Sarah Jentzsch,<br />

Benedikt Billmann and Dennis Grosche (all<br />

MSc4) came in 12 th (out <strong>of</strong> 15) in the final round<br />

<strong>of</strong> the EXIST-priME-Cup in Berlin, when the<br />

students were asked to produce a business<br />

plan for a solar company. Worthy <strong>of</strong> note is that<br />

at the time, the students were in their term<br />

abroad in the U.S., South Korea, and Costa<br />

Rica, and so had to make considerable efforts<br />

to get to Berlin for the event. Hats <strong>of</strong>f to their<br />

commitment! Their participation in the final<br />

round <strong>of</strong> the EXIST-priME-Cup was financially<br />

supported by VIEW e.V. (Verein für Innovation,<br />

Existenzgründung und Wachstum an der<br />

<strong>HHL</strong>), headed by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dr. Schwetzler.<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> VIEW e.V. is to foster practical and<br />

scientific research and discussion in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

innovation, entrepreneurship and growth.
