Sarah Mills then analyses the role of children <strong>in</strong> mixed cultural<strong>in</strong>stitutions, argu<strong>in</strong>g the amount of <strong>in</strong>tegration evident <strong>in</strong> their engagement with civic life. Sibley<strong>and</strong> Faldi exam<strong>in</strong>e the role of the Islamic bathhouse, propos<strong>in</strong>g that it extends an Islamic conceptto the wider European world through welcom<strong>in</strong>g people <strong>in</strong>to its space. Datta cont<strong>in</strong>ues the focus onspace by look<strong>in</strong>g at how hous<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> East London has been tailored to suit the needs of Bangladeshicommunities.‘Economic <strong>and</strong> political empowerment’ cont<strong>in</strong>ues to look at specific experiences but <strong>in</strong> thecontext of economic <strong>and</strong> political life; Pollard, Lim <strong>and</strong> Brown’s chapter demonstrate the empower<strong>in</strong>gpotential of Islamic f<strong>in</strong>ancial systems for both Muslim <strong>and</strong> non-Muslim communities. Iqbal <strong>and</strong> Phillipslook at the participation of Muslim activists <strong>in</strong> anti-war campaigns, consider<strong>in</strong>g this as an engagementwith Western political space. Follow<strong>in</strong>g this, Glynn analyses the responses of Western governments tothe politicisation of their Muslim citizens.‘Integration <strong>and</strong> resistance’ concludes the volume with Dwyer <strong>and</strong> Uberoi’s look at the communitycohesion debates of local government, followed by Brice’s analysis of the census to exam<strong>in</strong>e<strong>in</strong>tegration through residential patterns.
