<strong>Ethnicity</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Race</strong> <strong>in</strong> a Chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>World</strong>: A Review Journalwhich had been imported but also a form of mascul<strong>in</strong>ity present <strong>in</strong> their new home - the northernmill town of Bradford. 34 The angry young man image that was often seen <strong>in</strong> leaflets <strong>and</strong> posters ofthat time characterises Asian Youth Movement (Bradford), was not only <strong>in</strong>fluenced by traditionalforms of mascul<strong>in</strong>ity present with<strong>in</strong> the migrant community but also by traditional forms ofnorthern British mascul<strong>in</strong>ity that were present <strong>in</strong> northern mill towns, where young men hadhistorically ga<strong>in</strong>ed their place <strong>and</strong> purpose <strong>in</strong> society through hard physical labour. 35Geographies <strong>and</strong> spacesAnother key <strong>in</strong>fluence on AYM (Bradford) was the library. The central library <strong>in</strong> Bradford had acafe <strong>and</strong> it became a focus for ad hoc meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> educational discussions. It was accessiblefor young people all over the city <strong>and</strong> walk<strong>in</strong>g distance from Mann<strong>in</strong>gham. It was a public spacethat enabled the youth quite profoundly. Tariq Mehmood, who was estranged from his family,practically lived <strong>in</strong> the library <strong>and</strong> he associates this with his grow<strong>in</strong>g political awareness.... I had the library to stay <strong>in</strong>, so I had the advantage over them <strong>in</strong> that sense. They weregrounded <strong>in</strong> school <strong>and</strong> stuff... But I’d be <strong>in</strong> the library as soon as it opened. I’d be there until itclosed. ... I just read a lot, I had noth<strong>in</strong>g else to do dur<strong>in</strong>g the day... didn’t have family, didn’t havea home, I just read as much as I could. I began to underst<strong>and</strong> that the world I lived <strong>in</strong> was reallyfundamentally unfair. I began to underst<strong>and</strong> that this country was rich because we were poor <strong>and</strong>I also began to underst<strong>and</strong> that we were here because they were there <strong>and</strong> I really believed that.Another member, Gurnam S<strong>in</strong>gh talks about the meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> discussions that took place there:We used to k<strong>in</strong>d of go <strong>in</strong> the library cafe when it opened <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g, ... We didn’t havemuch money so we’d all buy a cup of tea ... just to prove that we were bona fide. And we’d docrosswords; the Guardian crossword <strong>and</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs like that... we used to share what we were read<strong>in</strong>g<strong>and</strong> then it would get <strong>in</strong>to disputes about certa<strong>in</strong> politics, <strong>and</strong> I would say, ‘Go <strong>and</strong> get the book’.And so the library was like our k<strong>in</strong>d of reference. It was there <strong>and</strong> we were talk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> ... I canremember read<strong>in</strong>g Capital, Marx’s Capital, <strong>and</strong> discuss<strong>in</strong>g that. And talk<strong>in</strong>g about Gramsci <strong>and</strong> allthese other people. And this was around the age of 16 to 17, <strong>and</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g politicised....Sometimes I’d go to the library <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>gs as well as after school. Or actually slam fromschool, miss classes <strong>and</strong> end up <strong>in</strong> the library. Which I mean, I th<strong>in</strong>k back to that, <strong>and</strong> I th<strong>in</strong>k thatwas someth<strong>in</strong>g to do with develop<strong>in</strong>g a critical education. 36The library did not act as an educator <strong>in</strong>dependently. The activities of the left <strong>in</strong> Bradford <strong>and</strong>their <strong>in</strong>teraction with South Asian youth was important to the direction that AYM (Bradford) took.Near the library, the Fourth Idea Bookshop also provided a space of <strong>in</strong>spiration:The Fourth Idea Bookshop was a bookshop plus with some sort of pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g facility <strong>in</strong> there,<strong>and</strong> an old comrade... he’s departed now, called Rub<strong>in</strong> Goldberg who used to work there. I th<strong>in</strong>k hewas part of the International Marxist group of which Tariq Ali was a member as well And that’s theplace which had really provided us with a lot of support, ideological support, support with ideas<strong>and</strong> sometimes we would debate <strong>in</strong> the library <strong>and</strong> up at the fourth idea book shop, borrow booksfrom there, read books... 37Geographies <strong>and</strong> social <strong>and</strong> political <strong>in</strong>fluences worked together to <strong>in</strong>fluence the development<strong>and</strong> nature of the Asian Youth Movement (Bradford). The forms of self education that took place<strong>in</strong> the public space of the library <strong>and</strong> the Fourth Idea Bookshop, the lessons of discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong>socialist perspectives learnt from the White left, meant that the macho culture of street battles<strong>and</strong> street patrols were tempered <strong>in</strong> the Asian Youth Movement (Bradford). They also saw thevalue <strong>in</strong> communicat<strong>in</strong>g their ideas to their public by produc<strong>in</strong>g a magaz<strong>in</strong>e that represented theirthoughts <strong>and</strong> ideas, just as left groups did. Through Kala Tara <strong>in</strong> particular they gave their work<strong>and</strong> campaign<strong>in</strong>g longevity <strong>and</strong> formalism. This magaz<strong>in</strong>e outl<strong>in</strong>ed their aims <strong>and</strong> objectives35
