Many of our childrenknew people who had beenaffected by the disaster. Studentsat both Primary and Secondaryschools, organised cake sales, toraise money and help some ofthe people and animals who hadlost possessions in the fire.Together, both schools raised€930. A cheque for the money was presented to the owner from Kim´s Animal Rescue, during an assembly atthe Primary School. She explained to the children how the money raised will be spent, replacing food,blankets, and helping with vet bills for injured animals that required medical treatment. The cheque waspresented by Head Girl, Varia Sinitchkina and Head Boy, Armen Alimoradian.Key Stage 3House CaptainsAs part of a continuingtradition, we recently heldan election for this year’sHouse Captains, torepresent Key StageThree. A selection ofstudents from Year 9 putforward their manifestosin a short speech, while allstudents from Years 6 to 9had the opportunity tovote for their favourite. Itcertainly raised thedemocratic spirit! October 2012Year 3 Trip to the Botanical Gardens, MálagaYear 3’s topic this term is Savingthe Planet (The Rainforests). Wehave included this theme in manyof our subjects; in PE we have doneRainforest Orienteering, in Dramawe have acted out being Rainforestanimals, in Art we have madeRainforest headdresses, in Musicwe have composed a rainforeststorm and in Science we have beenstudying plants. However, best ofall, we had a fabulous trip to theBotanical Gardens in Malaga where we were able to see andtouch many tropical plants.Eagles Cake SaleThis was a first for everything. Thefirst time that a cake sale has becomea house organized event and the firstcake sale for the Eagles and theirhouse leaders. Lucia and Christina,along with many volunteers did afantastic job selling the deliciouscakes to the hungry customers. Sadly,the cakes disappeared all too quicklyso we will have to make twice asmany next time. However, we stillmanaged to make over 100€ for ourschool charities. Well done Eagles!And a special thank you to themaintenance staff for setting out thetables.Year 7 Trip to the AlcazabaEarly in the morning, at 9am, we got ready for our trip to the Alcazaba (we were all so excited to have a funday.) Everyone hopped on to two buses, the art studentswent on one, and Year 7 went on the other. First we visitedMalaga cathedral. We took our ticket and entered thecathedral, mostly made up of gold, which took more than200 years to build. The detail in the building was amazing.After, we walked to the Alcazaba and entered a littlecinema, to see how important theatre and drama was inolden days, for people to express their feelings in a waythat words couldn’t. Then we passed into an informationroom which contained lots of sculptures. It even had askeleton that had been discovered in a graveyard, that wasthere before the theatre. After, we went to el TeatroRomano de Malaga. We learned that only poor peoplecould have a part in the plays, while the rich andimportant people sat on little terraces. The peasants satand watched in “el Craderio del Teatro,” the crowdedplace, with no real seats. After that we went to go explorethe castle el Alcazaba. We learned how people protectedthemselves. The Alcazaba was built on a mountain andhad a natural port, to its advantage. Later, we went to abeautiful garden, did our worksheet, and had lunch. Thenwe explored the rest of the castle. We passed through a doorway and followed the open pipes that wasused to provide water to the plants We found this enormous well that had a ladder going down, whichcontained millions of coins that people had thrown, as they made a wish. We also discovered a passageway going up, to find an amazing view of the beautiful city of Málaga. Finally, we found a bath tub with awaterfall, and then our teachers called us back to form in our groups. We had a brilliant day.Lisa Dhondt, Lydia Ibañez and Morgan Liggan Year 7Page 2

October 2012Year 11 Geography TripOn Monday 15 th October, the Year 11 Geography class wentout on a fieldwork trip around Marbella. The class met atAlameda to coordinate their busy day. There they were allsplit up into groups and sent out to different parts ofMarbella to assess the environmental quality , to do a vehicleand pedestrian count and ask tourists to fill outquestionnaires. They also investigated Marbella’s urbanmorphology by sketching a map of their study area. Lateron, they went to a small port in Paseo Maritimo to practicetheir field sketching by picking a specific area of the coastlineand the surrounding mountains to sketch. After lunch, thestudents were taken to Coral Beach. There, they investigated the physical characteristics of Marbella’scoastline by measuring the beach profile, sampling beach sediment and performing a long shore driftand wave study. On the whole, the trip was very productive, as it helped the students with theirupcoming IGCSE Geography exam this June. Apart from the trip being productive, all students had funand enjoyed their day out. The police have been informed and additional police presence has been requestedand given at this time. Please be vigilant and avoid leaving valuable items in view. We hope there willbe no further incidents.Year 5 Trip to MalagaOn Tuesday 9 th of October, Year 5 went to Malaga. We went to see the MPM, (Museo Picasso Malaga)and the Casa Natal. In the museum we were divided by classes. Miss Jayne´s class had Cristina as theirguide and Miss Lesley´s class had Jose Maria. Inside the Museum there were different sections to look at:portraits, sculpture, ceramics and some very strange faces. Some paintings were very simple and somewere very complex. When we stopped to look at an original painting or sculpture everybody shared theirideas of what it was, from their perspective. We followed Picasso through the ages. The first painting wesaw was painted by Picasso when he was 14 years old and the final one was when he was 90. It was afabulous experience to see the different stages of his art work. Afterwards we went to visit “Casa Natal”.Everything looked very old and precious, full of beautiful things. The living room, where Picasso hadlived, was incredible; the furniture was verydifferent to what we have today. The various roomswere filled with paintings and sculptures, they werelovely.When we got out of the Casa Nata, we had ourlunch and then we went to the gift shop, where webought some souvenirs with our money. We evenhad an ice cream! Finally we got back on the busand we went back to school. I loved the trip, - wehad a great time!Paloma Caballero Year 5LPage 3

October 2012Year 2 Trip to KenyaYear 2 recently went on an imaginary trip to Kenya as part of ourtopic “The Places People Go”.Dressed ready in our Safari clothes and with our bags packed, wewent through Passport Control, collected our boarding pass andentered the aeroplane which would carry us to Nairobi. Some veryattentive air hostesses went through the safety procedure andserved us on board snacks. During our flight, we had inboardentertainment, a Safari Video.After landing at Nairobi, we boarded a bus that would take us onthe next stage of our journey, an exciting Safari, to see the wildlifeof Kenya in action.IB Students at the Marbella Half MarathonOn a bright and crisp Sunday morning, 30 of our IB studentsvolunteered to help at the Marbella half marathon. The studentsmanned the feeding station, at the 15Km mark of the course. Thisannual race gives the opportunity for students to get involved in therunning of a major sporting event in their local community. Themorning passed smoothly, with over 1,500 runners completing the21km course, in and around Marbella and Puerto Banus.Staff SwimmersMembers of the PE Department at Swans, regularly participate in sportsevents held both locally around Marbella, Malaga Province and furtherafield, in places such as Granada. Miss Anne, Mr. Colin and Mr. Frankare keen swimmers, who also take part in Triathlon and Duathloncompetitions, with running or cycling too. Over the last few summerholidays they have enjoyed challenges such as the Triathlon of Estepona,the Aquatlon of Puerto Banus but more frequently, open sea swimmingraces. These include, the Travesias of El Puerto Deportivo de Marbella,El Puerto de Malaga, El Embalse de Bermejales, which has no salt orwaves, and theT r a v e s i a d eTorremolinos. Theswimming coursesvary, but are usuallybetween 1 and 2 km inlength and take our beloved teachers around 20minutes.Congratulations go to Miss Anne who made the podiumtwice for finishing in the top 3 of her category! October 2012Under 15 Girls FootballDuring the first week of October, our Under 15 Girls’ footballteam played a triangular tournament at Laude, with Sotograndealso participating. The girls produced a fantastic display to beatLaude 4-0, with goals from Ranya, Paloma, Annie and Alicia.Against Sotogrande, however, the girls unfortunately lost 2-0,despite having three fantastic strikes on goal, and a lot ofpossession. Throughout the day, their passing was extremelyimpressive, and player of the day was Isabel Brogsitter-FinckUnder 15 Boys FootballOn Wednesday 10 th October, a team of boys from Years 9 and 10 went toSotogrande School to play two games of football. The team was made upof Archie Craven in attack, Manuel Anguita on the left wing, NachoGomez in centre midfield, Hashem Abu-Kalam on the right wing, JamesHoward in the centre of defence, Oscar Lougher as a sweeper andAlexander Tawil as goalkeeper. The team was good, but just not quitegood enough. Although they lost the first game 3-0 with a few wonderfulsaves by Alexander Tawil, they responded well, winning their secondgame, 2-0. Both amazing and unstoppable goals were scored by OscarLougher.James Howard Year 9Under 15 Girls BasketballOn Wedenesday 10 th of October a group of Year 9 students participated in abasketball tournament against Sotogrande. It was held at lunch time through to theend of school. Everyone had a lot of fun and we even played a mixed match withsome of our team and some of their team together. Even though it was a last minutearrangement all the girls enjoyed the afternoon and, hopefully, we can arrangeanother meet like this one. Ella Justh Year 9Under 13 Girls FootballOn Wednesday 7 th October, the Under 13 Girls’ football team(Sara Keppler, Andrea Henderson, Camilla Frismodt,Manuela Gonzalez, Yasmin Abu Kalam, Malen PerurenaFavale, Maria Dopico) travelled to Sotogrande to play their Aand B team. Swans dominated the pitch in the first half, withfantastic passing and held their own against Sotogrande Ateam, however, they unfortunately conceded one goal in eachhalf, with the final score 2-0 to Sotogrande. They then playedtheir B team and won 2-0. Camilla Frismodt (Year 6) playedextremely well and was awarded player of the match.Page 5

Los niños del colegio Swans de Primariadecidieron organizar una venta de pasteles para recaudar dinero para ayudar a algunas de las personas yanimales afectadas por esta tragedia. Recaudamos 930 euros. Hoy durante nuestra asamblea entregamos elcheque para el Rescate de Animales de Kim. Le dijo a los niños cuánto ayudará este dinero a algunos perrosy gatos afectados por el fuego: facturas de veterinario, comida, mantas, etc. Varia Sinitchkina, la delegada delas alumnas y Armen Alimoradian, el delegado de los niños, hicieron entrega del cheque .Capitanes de las casas de Key Stage 3Como es tradicional,hemos elegido a loscapitanes de las distintascasas del colegio paraque representen a KeyStage 3. October 2012Year 3 viaje al jardín botánico de MálagaLa unidad de Year 3 de este trimestre es “Salvar el planeta” (LaSelva Tropical). Hemos incluido estetema en muchas de nuestrasasignaturas; en Educación Físicahemos trabajado orientación espacial,en teatro han representado a animalesde la selva, en arte hemos fabricadotocados para el pelo inspirados en laSelva Tropical, en música hemoscompuesto una “tormenta de la selva”y en ciencias hemos estado estudiandolas plantas. Sin embargo, lo mejor de todo, es que hicimos unviaje fabuloso al Jardín Botánico en Málaga, donde pudimosobservar y tocar muchas plantas tropicales.Venta de pasteles de Eagles¡Hemos sido los primeros! La primeravez que una de las cuatro casas delcolegio organiza una venta depasteles. Lucía y Christina, junto conmuchos voluntarios hicieron untrabajo fantástico vendiendodeliciosos pasteles a los hambrientosestudiantes. Lamentablemente, lospasteles desaparecieron tanrápidamente que la próxima vezharemos el doble. Sin embargo,logramos ganar más de 100€ paraobras benéficas del colegio. ¡Bienhecho, Eagles! Nuestroagradecimiento al personal demantenimiento por poner las mesas.Excursión de Y7 a la AlcazabaA las 9:00 de la mañana, ya estábamos todos preparados para hacer una fantástica excursión a la Alcazaba(se podía sentir el nerviosismo) Nos subimos a dos autobuses, en unolos estudiantes de arte y en el otro los alumnos de Year 7. Primerofuimos a la catedral de Málaga, compramos nuestra entrada y pudimosver que estaba hecha principalmente de materiales dorados, y quetardaron más de 200 años en construirla. Fue espectacular.Después, paseamos por la Alcazaba y entramos al pequeño teatrodonde nos dimos cuenta de lo importante que era ese lugar en laantigüedad, y supimos que ya entendían el teatro como una forma deexpresar los sentimientos sin tener que usar palabras. Seguidamente,pasamos a la sala de información en la que había muchas esculturasantiguas, e incluso un esqueleto humano, puesto que antes de quedescubrieran el teatro había allí un cementerio.Luego fuimos al teatro romano de Málaga, donde aprendimos que lagente pobre solo podía ver la representación desde un lugar del teatro,la cavea (graderío), mientras que los ricos y las personas importantes sepodían sentar en la orchestra, un espacio semicircular, de 15 metrossituado entre el graderío y el escenario. Después fuimos a explorar el Castillo de la Alcazaba que, al estarconstruida sobre la roca, constituye una fortaleza natural ante los ataques de los enemigos. Más tarde nosdirigimos a un hermoso jardín donde hicimos nuestros trabajos y pudimos almorzar. Luego exploramos elresto del castillo, y pasamos por una entrada donde vimos una especie de tuberías abiertas que servían desistema de regadío. Encontramos también un pozo enorme con una escalera que bajaba, que conteníamillones de monedas que la gente lanzaba para pedir deseos. Después había un pasadizo que subía y nosencontramos de golpe con una bonita vista de la ciudad con la catedral. En nuestra excursión, pudimosapreciar lo bonita que es la ciudad de Málaga con sus maravillosos monumentos. October 2012Excursion de Year 11 geografiaEl lunes 15 de octubre los alumnos de geografía de Year 11 fueronde excursión alrededor Marbella. La clase se encontró en laAlameda para planificar la jornada. Allí nos dividieron en gruposy nos mandados a diferentes partes de Marbella para evaluar lacalidad del medio ambiente, hacer un recuento de vehículos ypeatones y para pedir a los turistas que rellenasen cuestionarios.También hicimos un mapa esquemático de la zona de estudiopara investigar la morfología urbana de Marbella. Más tardefuimos a un pequeño puerto en el paseo marítimo para practicar nuestras habilidades en el dibujo. Parapracticar, escogimos y dibujamos un área específico de la costa y las montanas que la rodean .Despuésde comer los alumnos fuimos a Coral Beach. Allí investigamos las características físicas de la costa deMarbella. Primero tomamos muestras del sedimento de la playa, después medimos el perfil de la playa,y finalmente realizamos un estudio del efecto de las olas sobre la orilla. En general, la excursión fue muyproductiva, ya que nos ayudó a prepararnos para nuestro examen de Geografía IGCSE en junio.Además de que la excursión fuese productiva, todos los estudiantes nos divertimos y disfrutamos de laexcursión. Mónica Petrovic Year 11Advertencia a los padres de los niños del colegio de PrimariaLamento comunicarles que a la hora de salida del colegio de sus hijos, hemos sufrido en dos ocasioneslos robos de bolsos del interior de los coches que estaban aparcados en los alrededores del colegio. Se hainformado a la policía y habrá más presencia de agentes a esa hora. Por favor, sean prudentes y no dejenobjetos de valor a la vista. Esperamos que no ocurran más incidentes.Excursión de Year 5 a MálagaEl martes 9 de octubre, Year 5 fue a Málaga. Fuimos a ver el MPM (museo Picasso de Málaga) y su CasaNatal. En el museo nos dividimos en grupos. La clase de la Srta. Jayne tenía a Cristina como guía y laclase de la Srta. Lesley tuvo a José María. Dentro del museo había diferentes secciones que admirar:retratos, escultura, cerámicas y algunas caras muy extrañas. Algunos cuadros eran muy simples y otrosmuy complejos. Cuando paramos para contemplar una pintura original o escultura, todo el mundocompartía sus ideas sobre lo que era de acuerdo con su prospecto. Seguimos a Picasso a lo largo de lasdiferentes etapas de su vida. El primer cuadro que vimos fue pintado por Picasso cuando tenía 14 años yel último cuando tenía 90. Fue una experiencia fabulosa ver las diferentes etapas de su arte. Poco despuésfuimos a visitar la “Casa Natal”. Todos el mundo miraba a todo lo antiguo, precioso y lleno de belleza. Elsalón donde Picasso había vivido era increíble; elmobiliario era muy diferente a lo que usamos hoydía. Las diferentes habitaciones estaban llenas depinturas y esculturas, eran maravillosas. Cuandosalimos de la “Casa Natal” almorzamos y despuésfuimos a la tienda de regalos, donde compramosalgunos regalos con nuestro dinero, inclusotomamos helado, ¡Ummm!.Finalmente regresamos al autobús y después alcolegio. October 2012Year 2 viaje a KeniaEn Year 2 hemos realizado una excursión imaginaria a Kenia comoparte del tema que estamos viendo, “Los Sitios Donde Vamos.”Vestidos en ropa de safari y con nuestras mochilas preparadas,pasamos por el control del aeropuerto, recogimos los billetes ysubimos al avión que nos llevaría a Nairobi. Las azafatas muyatentas nos explicaron las normas y reglas de seguridad y nossirvieron galletas y zumo. Durante el vuelo vimos un vídeo de unsafari muy divertido.Después de llegar a Nairobi subimos a un autobús que nos llevaríaa la próxima etapa de nuestro viaje: a un safari impresionante paraver la naturaleza de Kenia en plena acción.Media marathon, MarbellaEl 30 de septiembre, 30 alumnos de IB de Swans International School,se unieron a la media maratón de 15 km de Marbella. Esta carrera anualles da a los estudiantes la oportunidad de participar en el mayoracontecimiento deportivo de atletismo de esta localidad. La mañanatranscurrió sin problemas, con más de 1.500 corredores haciendo unacarrera de 21 Km por los alrededores de Marbella y Puerto Banús.Natación de profesoresLos profesores de deporte de Swans participan a menudo en eventosdeportivos que tienen lugar aquí en Marbella y la provincia de Málagapero también en otras zonas más lejos como la de Granada. A MissAnne, a Mr Chamberlain y a Mr Frank les gusta mucho la natación ytambién participan en Triatlón y Duatlón (footing y ciclismo). Duranteestos últimos veranos han disfrutado de desafíos deportivos como losdel Triatlón de Estepona, el Aquatlón de Puerto Banús o la travesía anado del Puerto Deportivo de Marbella y de Málaga, la travesía delembalse de Bermejales ¡(sin sal ni olas)! y la travesía de Torremolinos. Ladistancia de loscircuitos varía peronormalmente son deun o dos kilómetros delargo y nuestrosqueridos profes tardanalrededor de 20 minutos en llegar.¡Felicidades a Miss Anne que ha podido subir al podioen dos ocasiones por llegar entre las tres primeras de sucategoría!¿Pero qué pasó a los chicos? ¡Quizás la foto de Mr Frankllegando a la meta de Marbella nos dice todo!Página 4

October 2012Fútbol femenino menores de 15 añosEl equipo femenino jugó un torneo triangular contra Laude ySotogrande. Las niñas jugaron muy bien, y ganaron a Laude4-0, con los goles de Ranya, Annie Paloma y Alicia. Por otrolado, perdieron 2 a 0 contra Sotogrande, aunque jugaron demaravilla teniendo mucha posesión del balón y con variasocasiones de gol. Sus pases fueron fenomenales e IsabelBrogsitter-Finck fue nombrada jugadora del partido.Fútbol masculino menores de 15 añosEl miércoles 10, un grupo de estudiantes de Year 9 y 10 fue a Sotograndepara jugar al fútbol. El equipo estaba formado por: Archie Craven enataque, Manuel Anguita en el ala izquierda, Nacho Gómez mediocampista,Hashem Abu-Kalam en el ala derecha, James Howard en el centro de ladefensa, Oscar Lougher de lateral y Alexander Tawil portero. El equipo erabueno, pero no era suficiente para el equipo de Sotogrande. Jugaron 2partidos, contra A y B . Aunque perdieron el primer partido 3-0 tambiencon unos paradones maravillosos de Alexander Tawil, volvieron a ganar elsegundo 2-0. Los dos goles fueron marcados por Oscar Lougher.Baloncesto femenino menores de 15 añosEl miércoles 10 de octubre un grupo estudiantes del Year 9 participó en un partidode baloncesto contra Sotogrande. Empezó a la hora de comer hasta terminar elcolegio. Todos los alumnos se divirtieron y jugaron varios partidos, incluyendo unmixto con mitad del equipo de Swans y mitad del equipo de Sotogrande. Todas lasniñas se lo pasaron muy bien y esperamos repetir muy pronto.Ella Justh Year 9Alexander Tawil Year 9Fútbol femenino menores de 13 añosEl miércoles 7 de octubre, los equipos de fútbol A y Bfemeninos menores de 13 años (Sara Keppler, AndreaHenderson, Camilla Frismodt, Manuella González,Yasmin Abukalam, Malen Perurena Favale, y MaríaDopico) fueron a Sotogrande a jugar. Swans dominó elpartido contra el equipo A de Sotogrande durante elprimer tiempo, con unos pases fantásticos,desafortunadamente nos metieron un gol en cada partedel partido y perdimos 2 a 0. Después jugamos contra elequipo B de Sotogrande y ganamos 2 a 0. CamillaFrismodt (Year 6) jugó muy bien y fue nombradajugadora principal del partido.Página 5
