January 2013Januray Roll of HonourOn Friday 18 th January, SwansSecondary School recognised itsRoll of Honour students. Animpressive 94 students hadgained 5 or more A grades forattainment or Level 1s for effort,from Years 7 to 10. Also includedwere 4 Year 12 students, who hadalready gained 36 points in theirIB studies. An assembly was heldto award these students with certificates. Under the theme ‘Celebrationof Achievement,’ the audience saw performances from three of ourLAMDA students, Marina García Hunter, Amaya Crichton-Smith andFelipe Ramon Torres. The following day these students performedoutstandingly in their LAMDA exam. Certificates were presented bySwans’ Head Girl, Amelia Walton, and Head Boy, Anton Brink, who bothgave a speech and recitedinspirational quotes. In herspeech, Amelia took theopportunity to congratulate herfellow students and thank herpeers, teachers and Mr and MrsSwan-Liggan, for theircontinued support and for theopportunity for students toachieve Roll of Honour status.Triple A Charity DonationAs part of our ongoingcommitment to supportlocal charities, the childrenof the Primary School werevery excited to be able topresent Triple A animalshelter with a cheque for600€. The money wasraised at the traditionalSwans Christmas Fair.Triple A were inattendance, bringing withthem dogs from theshelter, to the delight of the children. A Trip To The Istán DamToday we went to the Istán Dam. It took about 20 minutes to get there. Whenwe got on the mountain, the road was very wobbly and narrow. We kept onmoving from side to side, as soon we arrived we climbed out of the bus andate our snacks. When we finished our snacks we all climbed back into thebus and drove onto the bridge above the dam and left the bus to get a betterlook at the view .The dam was full of dirty water, my friends and I saw agreen squishy thing, floating around in it, it looked disgusting! We allboarded the bus and the driver drove down a hill halfway and there weretwo paths, one going down and another going in a straight direction we took the latter. When we reachedthe end of the road we saw a big hole with water cascading out of it, next to that there was a watertreatment plant, inside the plant there were massive tubes that carried the water to another buildingwhere the water is purified ready to be used again. After, we walked down another path to another partof the water treatment plant; this was where the water is cleaned ready to be used for tap water.Around the area of the dam it is very beautiful and green, there are many plants and trees, and one of thetrees was very rare. It was a peaceful spot, not much noise except for the sound of the tumbling waterand any visitors. It was raining slightly but that didn´t stop us having a great day.On the bus back we all chatted about the dam and we looked out at the view through the rain dropswhich were trickling down the window.By Marcus Y5LYear 1 Circus DayOn Wednesday 16 th January, Year 1 began their IPC topic of ‘Circus’ with a day of dressing up and learningwhat the circus is all about. Children and teachers all came to schooldressed as different performers, including clowns, acrobats, tigers,elephants, magicians and many more. We decorated the hall withballoons, posters and bunting and spent the afternoon having great funshowing the other children what each of the performers do in the circusand marching to circus music. At the end, we had popcorn and drinkswhilst watching a DVD of the Cirque du Soleil, with their amazingperformances. The day was lots of fun and thoroughly enjoyed byeveryone. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!Les Misérables TripOn Wednesday 13 th February there will be a performance of Victor Hugo’s book“Les Misérables” in Málaga. The French department has organised a trip for allFrench students, from Year 9 upwards, to go to Málaga and see this play. Thecost of this excursion will be €16 (theatre ticket + transport). During lessons,before the performance, students will study the text and the plot of the play sothat they will get the most out of this excursion. The bus will leave at 9:45am, on13 th February from school and students will be back in time for lunch.There will be normal lessons during periods 1, 5 and 6 and students are expectedto bring all necessary equipment for these classes. Football Training with Ruud Van NistelrooyHow lucky for our Reception boys and Miss Jane´s children – they hadfootball training with Ruud Van Nistelrooy this month. Ruud verykindly came in to each group during their respective sports sessions toshow them some football skills. After training exercises the childrenwere split into teams and played a match. There were some super goalsscored and lots of exciting action on the pitch. After the matches, Ruudwent in goal. Keeper is not Ruud’s best position! All of the childrenmanaged to score goals against him. Better luck next time, Ruud! Both teachers would also like to say avery special “thank you.”Inter-schools Cross CountryOn Wednesday 24 th January, Swans cross country team travelled to SunlandInternational school to take part in the Costa del Sol International schools crosscountry event. Ten schools took part in the event from a range of categories;Year 6, 7/8 and 9/10. Swans students’ behaviour was exceptional, and theylooked by far the smartest team in their PE tracksuits. Álvaro Luque León was a close2 nd swimming 700m and Marc Waller Torras completed 675m. In Year5, Lance Henderson completed 1000m! In joint second place ErikDekker and Klim Razumnov swan 950m. Boys´ House Football - 9 lunch-times, 18 matches and 143 goals!Football at Swans is starting to follow a system developed in South Americawhere teams play two leagues within a season - the Apertura (Opening) isheld in the first part of the season and the Clausura (Closing) is thesecond. The House teams played each other at Under 13, Under 15 andUnder 19 levels during Autumn term lunch-times and thecurrent champions of the Apertura are Falcons (U13), Kestrels (U15) andEagles (U19), however the Clausura may prove to be different! The Clausuragames are due to start soon and also provide opportunities for students tobe selected for the remaining inter-school football tournament in April. Winning teams from bothcompetitions will play-off to determine the true champions close to Easter!Under 13 Boys´ Basketball - Swans Suffer Set-backAfter several promising basketball seasons at Under 13 level, the present cropof youngsters suffered two disappointing early results. Injuries and illness tokey players (Aidan White and Dylan Ramirez) proved critical, as the boysbattled hard, but crumbled to defeat, against Laude and Sotogrande. OnWednesday 9 th January, Sara Keppler, María Dopico, Andrea Henderson, Vanessa Brogsitter-Finck,Casilda Dopico, Manuela González and Natalia Fernández travelled to Laude School to play the hostsand Sotogrande basketball teams. The first match was against Laude, where Swans dominated the gamewinning, 32 - 16. Sara Keppler (captain) demonstrated excellent dribbling skills, scoring layup shotsconsecutively. Manuela in Year 6, who was a year younger than her team mates, scored four basketsduring the match. The second match was against Sotogrande. Vanessa, Natalia and Andrea demonstratedexcellent defensive skills, intercepting many balls and gaining possession from rebounds. María andCasilda played very well together linking the attack and defense. Unfortunately, the final whistle wentjust before Swans were about to score, resulting in them losing by one basket 10-8.Well played girls!Mountain ClimbOn Saturday 16 th Febuary, the International Baccalaureate CAS students willattempt to climb Torrecilla, in the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range. Theobjective is to reach the Summit of 1919 metres. All the members of the schoolcommunity are invited, teachers, students and parents. January 2013Cuadro de Honor. EneroEl viernes 18 de enero, el Colegio deSecundaria Swans manifestó sureconocimiento a los estudiantes queconsiguieron un puesto en el Cuadro deHonor. En total fueron 94 alumnos,desde Year 7 a Year 10, los quealcanzaron 5 o más grados A enrendimiento académico o Nivel 1 enesfuerzo. En este Cuadro de Honor también se incluyó a 4 estudiantes deYear 12 por obtener 36 puntos en sus estudios de IB. Se organizó unaasamblea para premiar con certificados a estos estudiantes. Los asistentesa este acto pudieron disfrutar de las actuaciones de tres de nuestrosalumnos de LAMDA, Marina García Hunter, Amaya Crichton-Smith yFelipe Ramón Torres. Estos mismos alumnos realizaron al día siguientesu examen de LAMDA. Un viaje a la presa de IstánHoy fuimos a la presa de Istán. Tardamos unos 20 minutos parallegar allí. Cuando subimos a la montaña, la carretera estaba muydesigual y estrecha. Seguimos moviendonos de un lado al otro yen cuanto llegamos nos bajamos del autobús y tomamos nuestramerienda.Cuando terminamos con nuestra merienda subimostodos al autobús y nos dirigimos hacia el puente por encima de lapresa y salimos del autobús para tener una vista mejor. La presaestaba llena de agua sucia y mis amigos y yo vimos una cosablanda y verde flotando en el agua, parecía asqueroso! Todossubieron al autobús y el conductor condujo abajo hasta la mitad donde habían dos caminos, uno que va acuesta abajo y otro en dirección recta. Tomamos lo último. Cuando llegamos al final del camino vimosuna gran cascada de agua saliendo de él, y al lado había una planta de tratamiento de agua. En el interiorde la planta había enormes tubos que llevan el agua a otro edificio donde el agua se purifica para serusado de nuevo. Después, anduvimos por el otro camino a otra parte de la planta de tratamiento deagua, donde el agua se limpia para ser utilizada como agua potable. Alrededor de la zona de la presa esmuy bonito y verde, hay muchas plantas y árboles y uno de los árboles era muy raro. Era un lugartranquilo sin mucho ruido, excepto por el sonido del agua cayendo y los niños. Llovía ligeramente, peroeso no impidió que pasáramos un día estupendo. En el autobús durante la vuelta charlamos todos sobrela presa y admiramos a la vista a través de las gotas de lluvia que corrían por la ventana.El día de circoEl miércoles 16 de enero, Year1 comenzó su tema IPC de 'El Circo' con un día de vestirse y aprender lo quees el circo. Los niños y profesoras vinieron al colegio vestidos comodiferentes artistas, entre ellos payasos, acróbatas, tigres, elefantes, magosy muchos más. Decoramos la sala con globos, carteles y banderas ypasamos la tarde divirtiéndonos. Enseñamos a los otros niños lo que cadauno de los intérpretes hace en el circo y realizamos una marcha conmúsica del circo. Al final, tomamos palomitas de maíz y bebidas mientrasvimos un DVD del Cirque du Soleil, con sus increíbles actuaciones. El díafue muy divertido y lo disfrutamos todos! No podemos esperar a hacerlotodo de nuevo el año que viene!Excursión para ver la obra Les MisérablesEl miércoles 13 de febrero, y con motivo de la representación en Málaga dela obra Les Misérables basada en el libro del escritor Víctor Hugo, elDepartamento de Francés ha organizado una excursión para los alumnos defrancés a partir de Year 9. El coste es de 16 euros, e incluye la entrada alteatro y el autobús. Para obtener el máximo provecho a esta actividad, losalumnos estudiarán en clase de francés el texto y la trama de la obra antesde verla. El autobús saldrá del colegio a las 09:45. Volveremos a la hora delalmuerzo. Durante los períodos 1,5 y 6 de ese día tendrán clase, por lo quetienen que traer el material necesario. Entrenamiento de futbol con Ruud Van Nistelrooy¡Qué suerte tuvieron nuestros niños de Reception y los alumnos de laclase de Miss Jane- tuvieron entrenamiento de fútbol con Ruud VanNistelrooy este mes! Ruud vino a ver a cada grupo durante sus clases dedeporte para enseñarles algunas habilidad a desde fútbol. Después delos ejercicios de entrenamiento los niños se dividieron en equipos yjugaron un partido. Hubo algunos golazos y un montón de acción yemoción en el campo. Después de los partidos Ruud se puso en laportería. Portero no es la mejor posición de Ruud! Todos los niños e metieron un gol. Le deseamos mássuerte la próxima vez, Ruud! ¡Los profesores querían darle sus las gracias!Campo a través inter escolarEl miércoles 24 de enero, el equipo de Swans se desplazó hasta el colegio SunlandInternational school, para participar en las carreras de campo a través entre colegiosinternacionales de la Costa del Sol. En total, 10 colegios participaron en dichoacontecimiento, en distintas categorías: Year 6, 7/8 y 9/10. El comportamiento delos estudiantes de Swans fue excepcional, y eran los más elegantes uniformados. La competición consistía en nadar durante 20 minutos parasaber cuántos largos podían hacer. En primera posición quedó PaolaCerrudo de Year 4, que hizo 30 largos, un total de 750 metros. ÁlvaroLuque León quedó segundo con 700 metros y Marc Waller Torras hizo675 metros. En Year 5, Lance Henderson nadó ¡1000 metros! Fútbol masculino – ¡9 encuentros, 18 partidos y 143 goles!Estamos siguiendo en Swans un sistema de competición desarrollado enSudamérica, en el que los equipos juegan dos ligas en una temporada. LaApertura se lleva a cabo en la primera parte de la temporada, y la Clausuraen la segunda. Durante el primer trimestre y a la hora del almuerzo, losequipos de las distintas Houses jugaron entre ellos en las categorías deMenores de 13, Menores de 15 y Menores de 19. Los campeones de laApertura fueron los Falcons (Menores de 13), Kestrels (Menores de 15) yEagles (Menores de 19). La Clausura, que empezará pronto, puede serdiferente, y se seleccionará a los alumnos para el torneo de fútbol inter escolar que tendrá lugar en abril.Los equipos ganadores en ambas competiciones se enfrentarán al final de este trimestre para elegir alganador definitivo.Baloncesto masculino menores de 13 años. Swans sufre un contratiempoDespués de varias temporadas prometedoras para la categoría Menores de 13 años,nuestros chicos sufrieron dos resultados negativos. Nos perjudicó tener jugadoreslesionados o enfermos (Aidan White y Dylan Ramírez), y aunque lucharon duro, sederrumbaron contra Laude y Sotogrande. Al margen de estos resultados, tenemosque destacar el juego de Adnan Abu Kalam y Sibo Hu, que lo hicieron muy bien yanimaron el partido en todo momento. María y Casilda jugaron muy bien en ataque y defensa.Desafortunadamente, pitaron el final del partido justo cuando Swans estaba a punto de encestar,perdiendo 10-8, solo por una canasta.¡Muy bien jugado, chicas!Ascensión al Torrecilla (Sierra de las Nieves)El próximo sábado 16 de febrero los alumnos de CAS de BachilleratoInternacional realizarán una excursión a la Sierras de las Nieves.
