International School Cross Country ChampionshipOn Thursday 3 rd February the long awaited, once postponed,Cross Country Championships took place at EIC, run over a3km route close to their school. Swans entered a full teamfrom Years 7 to 11, five boys and five girls in each year groupcategory. We also took along fourteen strong runners fromYear 6 who entered either as funrunners to gain experience, or aspart of the secondary team. Therewere five schools competing forindividual 1 st Place trophies,medal placings, and moreimportantly, a team prize. Pointsaccumulated throughout the dayto give us 2 nd place overall with825 points. EIC won the eventwith a total of 988 and Laude finished third with 629points. Many students couldidentify with the young protagonist’s hope andoptimism for the future and the simple metaphorof life as a race. A small cast of three, effectively created a foreboding and eerie ambiencewith minimalist materials. This sad symbolic tale left students with a strong sense of thetragedy of war and the knowledge that all actions have consequences.Valentine’s Day Cake SaleMr. Graeme needed some help to raise money forthe Triple A dog charity. Some Year 6RS girlsincluding Grace, Isabella, Lucia, Megan, Selena,Katia, Amaya, Brooke, Chloe, Lilia and Marinadecided to help him. They meet him at lunchtimesand also join him every Saturday at Triple A tovolunteer. The girls asked for permission to raisemoney by having a cake sale, which was a greatsuccess. They made posters and asked every pupilfrom Year 6 to bring in Valentine cakes. Seniorschool pupils were also allowed to wear silly socks or tights for this occasion. We wouldlike to thank all the teachers and students who supported us and we are pleased to haveraised 270€.World Book DayOn the 24 th and 25 th of February Swans Secondary and Primary celebrated World BookDay and enjoyed the visit of Ana Fischel, author of ‘The Twelve Quests’. Under 19 Boys FootballThe Under 19’s fought their way to a win and a drawagainst Sotogrande and Mayfair respectively to pushthemselves up to second place in the league. The work, nearly all from Years 4, 5 and 6, will be displayedin the entrance to the pool. The entry which best explained the benefits of an Ozone pool,in a clear and concise way, was from Lloyd, in Year 4V, and here it is in full!‘Ozone is used as an alternative to chlorine to keep swimming pools clean. Chlorine isnot good for the environment, and can cause asthma, lung and skin damage. Ozone ismade of oxygen or O 2 . An ozone generator converts the oxygen into Ozone (O 3 ). Ozone isnatural and is more effective at filtering dirt, grease, skin, hair and oil, than chlorine.Ozone also keeps the water clearer, softer, and smelling fresher.`Lucas, also from Year 4V, produced a wonderfully detailed drawing which can be foundamongst the display at the entrance to the pool. Jack from Year 6RS answered thequestion ‘What is so special about our school pool?`‘Our school pool is special because ituses Ozone instead of chlorine. Thepool can be used all year round,because it is covered. The pool is 25metres long and at one end of it youcan dive because it is very deep. Under 15 Girls FootballOn Wednesday 9 th February the Under 15 girlstravelled to Laude, to play two games of football,one against the hostsand one againstSotogrande. Weplayed first againstSotogrande in anevenly balanced 0-0draw. Laude thenplayed Sotograndeand beat them 4-0 inan excellent display of attacking football. We thenplayed this impressive team and were beaten 5-1, atleast having the joy of scoring one goal!Congratulations must go to Laude for their excellentfootball, and their so far unbeaten league record. Ourteam was : Natalia, Ida, Evelyn, Sara, Monica andMegan from Year 10 and Raquel, Lola and Mariafrom Year 9. Padel TournamentOn Sunday the 13 th ofFebruary, a number of IBstudents, as well as a selectfew from the secondary schoolstaff took part in a padeltournament which wasorganised by myself, LucasReek in Y12MGa. Thetournament was played atClub de Tennis PuenteRomano, between 10am and4pm. Although many would call Sunday a “day of rest”, these athletes all managed todrag themselves out of bed and turn up at the correct time. The pairs had been drawn acouple of weeks before, completely randomly by pulling names from a hat and, after afew withdrawals, everybody had a partner. Everyone had three matches to play beforethere could be any hope of making it to the semi-finals. As predicted, the competition wasfierce. However, it is unlikely that any of these players would have played so well, if ithad not been for the tournament sponsor ‘Originals Interiors’, who kindly providedrefreshments. The tournament soon progressed to the semis. Nikita Zverev & I playedMr. Chris French & Marta Perez for a place in the final, while Nicolas Dalli & Carlos Vidalplayed Guillermo Fernandez & Daniel Rayner. Eventually, the two best pairs faced oneanother. Lucas & Nikita would play Guillermo & Daniel for the “Originals PadelTournament” trophy! The battle began! After an intense encounter, Guillermo and Danielwere crowned champions after beating Lucas and Nikita 9-7! It was a well deservedvictory, and the best team won! This triumph marked the end of the tournament andhopefully set the standard for future events. Year 2 Tripto MálagaAs part of the Year2 IPC topic thisterm the studentsare studyingmaterials andclothes. OnThursday 17 th FebYear 2 students went to the Museo de Artes Populares in Málaga to see examples offashion changes throughout the centuries. After their guided tour of the museum theywent to a park in Fuengirola for their picnic lunch before returning to school. A great daywas had by all!Orienteering.On Thursday 17 th February the wholeof Year 6 and the younger pupilsfrom Year 7 (those who fall into theAlevin age category for Spanishactivities) were involved in theannual Orienteering competition heldin Parque Nagueles. It was a wild andwindy day as we set our teams offour off with maps and enthusiasm,to find their route followinginstructions around the park. Therewere four local schools involved andabout 100 mixed teams (boys and girls) so the competition was hard, with medals givenfor only the first three places . Congratulations to our 2 nd place winners, all from Year 6:Sara Keppler (participating as a map reader due to a bad ankle!), Alba de Fortuny,Manuel Anguita, María Dopico and Alejandro López. The competitions for Benjamin(Year 4 and 5) and Infantil ( the rest of Year 7 and Year 8) were postponed due to badweather! By double parking, you restrict the view of pedestrians trying to cross an alreadybusy road, and we would hate to have an accident. Y2 viajea MálagaComo parte de launidad didáctica deIPC en Y2, que losalumnos/as estándesarrollando sobrelas telas y la ropa.El pasado día 17 defebrero, los chicos/as de Y2 visitaron el museo de Artes Populares de Málaga centrándoseen los cambios de moda a través de los siglos. Después de la visita guiada al museo,fueron a un parque de Fuengirola a tomar un almuerzo al estilo picnic antes de regresar alcolegio. ¡Fue un día muy agradable para todos!OrientaciónEl jueves 17 de febrero todo Y6 y losalumnos más jóvenes de Y7 (aquellosque entran en la categoría de alevín paraactividades españolas) participaron en lacompetición de orientación anual que secelebró en el Parque de Nagüeles. Fueuna jornada con mucho viento.Mandamos 4 equipos con mapas y conmucho entusiasmo para que encontraranuna ruta en el parque siguiendo unaserie de instrucciones. Cuatro colegioslocales participaron y un total de unos 100 equipos mixtos (chicos y chicas), así que lacompetición fue dura y solo obtuvieron medallas los que ocuparon los primeros 3puestos. Aparcando en doble fila se restringe la visión de aquellospeatones que intentan cruzar lo que ya de por sí es una carretera muy transitada y noquisiéramos tener un accidente. Tardar unos minutos más y aparcar correctamente no esmucho pedir si así se puede evitar un accidente. ¿Podrían todos los padres, por favor,aparcar en el parking mientras esperan a su hijo/a? Tornamenta de PadelEl domingo 13 de febrero, algunosalumnos de IB, junto con algunosmiembros del profesorado desecundaria participaron en untorneo de Padel que fueorganizado por Lucas Reek deY12MGa. El torneo se celebró en elclub de tenis de Puente Romano,de 10am a 4pm. Aunque muchosconsideran el domingo como “eldía de descanso”, todos estosdeportistas se levantaron de la cama a tiempo y acudieron a la cita con puntualidad. Lasparejas fueron elegidas unas semanas antes por sorteo. Todos los participantes jugaron almenos tres partidos, con el fin de acceder a las semifinales. Como ya nos imaginábamos,la competición fue dura. Ninguno de estos jugadores hubiesen jugado bien sino hubiesesido por la colaboración del sponsor del torneo ‘Originals Interiors` que nos suministróagua y refrescos. El torneo pronto llegó a las semifinales. Jugamos Nikita Zverev y yo,contra Mr.Chris French y Marta Pérez en una de las semifinales, mientras Nicolas Dalli yCarlos Vidal jugaron contra Guillermo Fernández y Daniel Rayner en la otra semifinal. Alfinal se decidió las parejas que jugarían la final: Lucas y Nikita contra Guillermo y Daniel,ambas parejas lucharon por el trofeo de “Originals Padel Tournament” ¡La batalla comenzó!Después de un intenso encuentro, Guillermo y Daniel ¡se coronaron ganadores despuésde ganar a Lucas y Nikita 9-7! Fue una merecida victoria, y ¡ganó el mejor equipo! Futbol femenino cadeteEl miércoles 9 de febrero el equipo femenino cadetefue a competir al colegio LAUDE.Jugaron dos partidos, uno contra el equipo de casay otro contra el colegiode Sotogrande.Primero jugamoscontra el colegio deSotogrande, quedandoel marcador igualadoa 0-0.Luego jugó elcolegio LAUDE contrael de Sotogrande ganando, 4-0, en un magníficopartido de ataque. Fútbol masculino juvenilNuestros estudiantes jugaron y obtuvieron una victoria y unempate contra Sotogrande y Mayfair respectivamente. Deesta forma obtuvieron el segundo lugar en la liga. Se daban 5 merits/ house points, a aquellos que presentaran un buen trabajo, yque explicaran con sus propias palabras como funciona una piscina de Ozono. El trabajoque explicó mejor los beneficios de una piscina de Ozono de manera clara y concisa fue elde Lloyd, en Y4V.“El Ozono se utiliza como alternativa al cloro para mantener las piscinas limpias. El cloro no esbueno para el medio ambiente, y puede causar asma, y daños pulmonares y de piel. El ozono estáhecho de oxígeno u O2. Un generador de ozono convierte el oxígeno en ozono(O3). El ozono esnatural y más efectivo a la hora de filtrar la suciedad, pelos y aceite que el cloro. El ozono tambiénmantiene el agua más clara y con un olor más fresco”Lucas de Y4V, realizó un dibujo muy detallado que se puede ver en uno de los panelesdel colegio. Jack de Y6RS respondió a la pregunta: ¿Qué tiene de especial de nuestrapiscina? “La piscina de nuestro colegio es especial porque utiliza ozono en vez de cloro. Se puedeutilizar la piscina durante todoel año, porque está cubierta. Lapiscina tiene 25 metros de largo,y en una punta puedes bucearporque es muy honda. Podréisencontrarlo en el panel situado junto a la enfermería.Esperamos que más alumnos se animen a participar en este nuevo desafío.Teatro Black BoxEl pasado viernes nuestros alumnos de primaria ysecundaria tuvieron la oportunidad de presenciar ennuestro salón de actos “Little Swan Theatre” una obrateatral por parte de la compañía Black Box de Marbella.“Thousand Cranes” es una fábula moderna que trata sobrela vida de una familia japonesa que vive el despertar de labomba atómica de Hiroshima. Muchos estudiantes seidentificaron con la esperanza de los jóvenes protagonistas, el optimismo para el futuro yla metáfora de la vida como una carrera. Un pequeño reparto de tres personajes creó unambiente premonitorio con la utilización de unos mínimos recursos . Este triste cuentohizo reflexionar a los alumnos sobre el horror de las guerras y con la idea de que de quetodos los actos tienen unas consecuencias.Venta de pasteles en San ValentínMr. Graeme necesitaba ayuda para recaudar dinero parala asociación canina Triple A. Algunas alumnas de Y6R:Isabella, Lucía, Megan, Selena, Katia, Amaya, Brooke,Chloe, Lilia y Marina decidieron ayudarle. Se reunieroncon él durante los recreos y todos los sábados en la tripleA como voluntarios. Las alumnas pidieron permiso pararecaudar fondos mediante una venta de pasteles, quetuvo un gran éxito. Pusieron carteles y pidieron a cadaalumno de Y6 que hicieran pasteles en San Valentín. Se les dio permiso a los alumnos desecundaria para llevar calcetines o medias originales para esta ocasión. Competición de “Cross Country” entre colegios InternacionalesEl jueves 3 de febrero, el esperado y pospuesto “Cross Country”se celebró en el EIC. La carrera tenía un recorrido de 3 km .Swans participó con un equipo muy completo, con alumnosdesde Y7 hasta Y11, 5 chicos y 5 chicas por cada curso. Tambiénllevamos a 14 corredores de Y6 que participaron como “funrunners” para adquirir experienciacomo parte del equipo desecundaria. Participaron cincocolegios. Hubo premiosindividuales, medallas y, lo másimportante, trofeos por equipo. Lospuntos se acumularon durante todoel día, logrando Swans el segundopuesto con 825 puntos. El EIC ganóel evento con un total de 988 y LAUDE acabó tercero con untotal de 629 puntos. Todos losalumnos de Y6trabajaron muy durodurante sus lecciones de IPC para construir un modeloespacial a base de basura reciclable, que representabaun lugar donde vivir en Marte. Colegios de todaEuropa participaron en esta competición y estamosorgullosos de anunciar que un grupo de alumnos deY6HS obtuvieron el primer premio.
