Professor Ong’s research interests are in neuroepidemiology and<br />
neuroimmunology. He has done work on headache disorders,<br />
myasthenia and continues to have active collaborations with<br />
colleagues in the Asia Pacific area in the study of demyelinating<br />
Central Nervous System diseases. He is active in Neurology<br />
Specialist Training and has been applying Information Technology<br />
and process improvement in hospital-based patient care delivery<br />
since 1998.<br />
Professor Ong received the National Day Public Administration<br />
Medal for his leadership contributions in 2009.<br />
laurent Degos<br />
Laurent Degos, Professor of Medicine at Paris<br />
VII University, former chairman of the Board<br />
of the Haute Autorité de santé, previously<br />
head of the clinical blood disease department<br />
at Saint-Louis Hospital, and director of<br />
the Biology and Biotechnology Graduate<br />
School. Laurent Degos has published several<br />
scientific articles in hematology, genetics, immunology, cancer<br />
and public health. In particular, he discovered how to transform<br />
a leukemic cell into a normal cell, thereby opening up a new<br />
approach to cancer treatment.<br />
Prof Degos is a member of the French Academy of Science and<br />
a Knight of the Legion of Honour. He has received a number<br />
of international prizes including the General Motors Prize<br />
(Washington), the Brupbacher (Zurich), and the Gagna and Von<br />
Hoeck Prize (Brussels). Laurent was the chairman of Programme<br />
and Planning Committee for ISQua’s 2010 conference in Paris<br />
2010.<br />
richard grol<br />
Professor Grol is Director of the Centre for<br />
Quality of Care Research in The Netherlands.<br />
He studied law and psychology and was<br />
trained as a psychotherapist before entering<br />
health services research. He is emeritus<br />
professor of Quality of Care at the Radboud<br />
University Nijmegen and Maastricht University.<br />
Prof. Grol was Director of IQ <strong>Health</strong>care, one of the leading<br />
International scientific institutes in the field of quality and safety in<br />
healthcare. He founded, and was director of, the Nijmegen Centre<br />
for Evidence Based Practice (NCEBP). Currently he works as an<br />
independent policy advisor.<br />
Prof. Grol has published over 500 scientific papers and contributed<br />
to over 25 books. He has successfully supervised almost 70 PhD<br />
theses.<br />
Prof. Grol was founder and president of the European Association<br />
for Quality in Primary Care, as well as advisor to the Dutch College<br />
of General Practitioners for many years. He received a Honorary<br />
Fellowship and Lifetime Career Award from the <strong>World</strong> <strong>Organization</strong><br />
of Family Doctors in 2004, and a Honorary Fellowship of the Royal<br />
College of General Practitioners in the UK in 2005. In 2006 he<br />
received a Royal Award: Order of the Dutch Lion (Ridder in de<br />
Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw) for his unique scientific work on<br />
quality in health care. In 2009 he received the ‘Universiteitspenning’<br />
(University Award) of Radboud University Nijmegen. In 2010 he<br />
received the highest award of the Dutch College of GPs.<br />
P Y leung<br />
Dr Leung began his career in 1985 in public<br />
health and administrative medicine. He was<br />
appointed Deputy Director of Food and<br />
Environmental Hygiene in 2000, Deputy<br />
Director of <strong>Health</strong> in 2002 and the first<br />
Controller of Centre for <strong>Health</strong> Protection<br />
in 2004. Dr Leung joined the Hong Kong<br />
Hospital Authority as Director of Quality and Safety in 2007 and is<br />
currently Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority, responsible for<br />
41 public hospitals and institutions and 58,000 staff.<br />
Thomas Tsang<br />
Dr Tsang obtained his medical degree at<br />
the University of Hong Kong in 1990. He<br />
graduated with a Masters of Public <strong>Health</strong><br />
degree from Johns Hopkins University (USA)<br />
in 1992. Dr. Tsang obtained a Fellowship in<br />
Community Medicine under the Hong Kong<br />
Academy of Medicine in 1999. During 1998-<br />
2000, he underwent a two year training program under the Centers<br />
for Disease Control and Prevention at Atlanta, USA.<br />
Dr Tsang joined the Department of <strong>Health</strong>, HKSAR Government<br />
in 1992. His work experience and publications have mainly been<br />
on the prevention and control of infectious diseases. He took an<br />
active role in managing several major epidemics, including avian<br />
influenza A(H5N1) in 1997, SARS in 2003, and pandemic influenza<br />
A(H1N1) in 2009, during which he contributed to bringing about<br />
mechanisms for quality infection control and crises management<br />
in healthcare institutions and the general community. He is now<br />
Controller of the Centre for <strong>Health</strong> Protection of the Department of<br />
<strong>Health</strong>.<br />
Joanna groves<br />
Joanna is the Chief Executive Officer<br />
of the International Alliance of Patients’<br />
<strong>Organization</strong>s (IAPO). IAPO is the global<br />
group representing patients from all disease<br />
areas and all regions of the world. IAPO’s<br />
members are patients’ organizations and<br />
non profit health-related organizations.<br />
Joanna is responsible for managing and implementing the overall<br />
strategy of the organization as defined by IAPO’s international<br />
Governing Board. She takes a leading role in communicating<br />
IAPO position on healthcare issues which represent the views of<br />
IAPO’s member patients’ organizations, and building productive<br />
partnerships with international health-related organizations.<br />
Driven by its membership, IAPO focuses on issues that are of<br />
importance to patients’ organizations regardless of their disease<br />
area or geographical location. Ongoing policy priorities include<br />
access to healthcare, patient safety, patient information and patient<br />
involvement. Joanna has a science policy background holding a<br />
Masters degree in Science and Technology Policy Studies. She<br />
joined IAPO in March 2004 as Policy & External Affairs Director<br />
before becoming Chief Executive Officer in March 2007. Prior to<br />
joining IAPO, she worked in other nonprofit health organizations<br />
including in a policy and research capacity building role for The<br />
Welcome Trust’s Biomedical Ethics Section. She has particular<br />
interest in how policy is formulated, supporting a stronger role for<br />
patient engagement and social and ethical considerations in health<br />
policymaking.
