Aftervisiting the 3 ha project of Jami inBergschenhoek, Netherlands, they wereconvinced about the potential benefitsof LED interlighting. As far as <strong>to</strong>plightingis concerned most of the greenhouses inthe UK have lower ceilings than those inthe Netherlands, so HPS lighting is notalways an option. Addressing this issue,Melrow Salads is trailling the Philipshybrid LED <strong>to</strong>p/interlighting system ona small cherry-type <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong> cultivar(30-35 gr fruit weight) at FlavourfreshSalads’ Lansdale Nursery site the2013/2014 winter. The aim is <strong>to</strong> learnabout the opportunities and potential <strong>to</strong>extend the season, improve consistencyin flavour and increase the yield ofspecialty <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong>es. After two days of‘hybrid-lighting’ the plant alreadylooked stronger, with darker leaves,more purple anthocyanin in the head,and a stronger truss.ResultsAchieving a high productionof healthy and tasty locallygrown <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong>es using energyefficientlighting“This lighting installation will allow us <strong>to</strong> extendthe UK season, improving consistency in flavourand increasing the yield of speciality <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong>es.”34 Philips Horticulture LED Solutions - General booklet
