Wine Estate Bürgerspital
Zum Heiligen Geist
The Würzburg citizen Johannes von
Steren founded the Bürgerspital zum
Heiligen Geist in 1316. It was a sinecure
home for older adults in need
of assistance. To this day, the main
purpose of the foundation is the care
of 950 seniors. The revenue from the
wine estate continues to serve this
purpose. The estate owns 110 hectares
of vineyards and it is one of the
largest and best-known wine estates
in Germany. It encompasses some of
the best wine-growing locations in
Franconia.

The tour takes you through the
historical Spital Church and the
picturesque courtyard to the
renowned winery and its worldfamous
cellar. In the treasure vault
you can see the world’s oldest
white wine from 1540. At the end
of the tour, you receive a small
Bocksbeutel bottle as souvenir and
for you to enjoy in the quiet of
your home.

n Public Wine Tasting

The Bürgerspital is one of the
oldest, largest and best wine
estates in Germany. A wine tasting
in the romantic wine cellar of the
Bürgerspital is an unforgettable
experience. As an individual, you
have the opportunity to experience
a public wine tasting and
get to know the wines produced
here.
The tour through the cellar and
its 200 oak barrels is packed with
much information about wine
production and the history of the
estate.
The following wine tasting is a
great way to discover the secrets
of the prized Bürgerspital wines.
Included are six glasses of wine
and one glass of sparkling wine,
plus sparkling water and homemade
bread.

Staatlicher Hofkeller

The former imperial cellar of the
prince-bishops of Würzburg is
located in the basement of the
Residence Palace. The cellar is very
large and its hallways are intertwined
and maze-like. In 1719, the princebishop
Johann Philipp Franz awarded
the contract to build a new royal
residence to Balthasar Neumann,
the architect from Eger. The order
included the construction of an
“excellent” wine cellar.
The cellar is one of the most beautiful
wine cellars in the whole world.
It can be experienced during a tour
through the beautifully illuminated
halls and hallways.
The imposing wooden barrels in the
“Stückfasskeller” are mesmerizing.
Thousands of visitors from all over
the world come to this truly unique
cellar each year for tours, wine
tasting, and cultural events
