When it comes to opera, Prague is perhaps best
known for Mozart… The composer spent much time
in the city as guests of aristocratic families, who vied
with each other to have him to stay. The opulent
eighteenth century Estates Theatre hosted the premier
of Don Giovanni in 1787, and Mozart is said to have
stated that Praguers understand his music like noone
else. To experience a Mozart opera at The Estates
Theatre, which has changed little since the master’s
day, is a journey back in time. But Prague opera is
not just about Mozart, for it is worth trying the Czech
masters as well. The best place to see classics like
Dvořák‘s Rusalka or Smetana’s The Bartered Bride
is the gilded National Theatre, which was built by
public contributions as a place to embody Czechness
in the 1870 and 80s. Finally, the majestic State Opera
completes Prague high quality opera trinity.
