MCH dedicates Heritage Park
Methodist Children’s Home dedicated Heritage Park during a special ribbon-cutting
ceremony April 7, 2012. The dedication was held as part of
MCH’s Homecoming celebration.
Heritage Park is located on the Waco campus, and it features a home
field for MCH’s six-man football team and an area for softball games.
Heritage Park highlights other alumni projects in this area of campus, including
the Alumni Pavilion and Brick Plaza, which serve as gathering places
for alumni at Homecoming and campus activities during the year.
Funding for Heritage Park was made possible through earnings from the
Alumni Association endowment fund and individual gifts. Earnings from the
alumni endowment were used to purchase bleachers, a scoreboard and goalposts
for the football field, as well as a backstop for softball games. The football
scoreboard is sponsored by the Alumni Association.
Pictured at the ribbon-cutting are (l-r): Kevin
former president.

President’s Perspective
BY TIM BROWN
Summers at Methodist Children’s
Home are important and precious
times with our young people.
Even though they have much
work to do while in our care, we
are convinced that they deserve
childhood experiences that offer
joy and fun each day, which can
be a new or threatening experience
for most of them.
We provide youth a variety of opportunities during the summer
to build healthy relationships and restore trust in family
and each other. These experiences include church camps, enrichment
classes, outdoor adventures, mission trips, internships
and leadership camps, as well as activities like horseback
riding, swimming, social outings and sports. The fun and
joy youth experience through these activities are the cement
or glue that helps them retain, recall and use the information
they learn to make critical choices and decisions affecting
their future.
Developing healthy relationships and trust with our youth
are primary to all we must do to help them learn and grow.
Summer provides a perfect opportunity to accomplish these
things in a short amount of time, and they can become powerful
and beneficial tools for our staff in the weeks and
months ahead.
You will read about summer experiences and opportunities in
this issue of the Sunshine magazine. As you read these articles,
such as the ones pertaining to summer internships and
mission trips, I hope you will find them inspirational and insightful.
You will also enjoy the photographs in this issue that
show the fun and joy youth experienced this summer.
Your ongoing prayers and support make these opportunities
possible and thereby empower us to be influential in the
lives of our children, youth and families. We encourage you
to visit any of our Methodist Children’s Home locations and
learn more about our mission and our outreach efforts on
our residential campuses, in our foster care programs, and
through the family preservation work we are doing in communities
across Texas and New Mexico to support families
and children.
Sunshine I Summer 2012

The Joys of
Summer
As youth and staff at Methodist Children’s Home settle into the new school year,
memories still linger of the special times they experienced during the summer.
For three months, our youth took advantage of a wide range of activities and
opportunities to learn new skills, serve others through their gifts and talents, and
relax from their busy schedules.
Staff members in MCH’s residential program spent months developing a full
schedule of activities for youth. Enrichment classes and clubs served as the foundation
of summer programming as staff members volunteered to teach classes that
enabled youth to develop new interests or strengthen their knowledge and skills.
In addition, youth and staff hit the road for outdoor activities and day trips to water
parks, amusement parks, museums and shopping excursions. Youth also enjoyed
serving others on mission trips and through weekly work projects for local organization,
churches and residents. MCH youth have a strong reputation for their willingness
to lend a helping hand to meet the needs of others.
MCH is grateful for benefactors who provide the financial support necessary to
offer summer programs for our youth. The following pages highlight some of the
special opportunities our youth and staff experienced this summer.
park; Ty and Tony Poe, a member of the Plant Department staff, work on a remodeling project on the Waco campus;
SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROFILE
Plant staff helps Darnell
learn important life lessons
As a summer intern in the Plant Department,
Darnell enjoyed working alongside staff members
for three months to help maintain the 130-acre
Waco campus.
Darnell braved the summer heat to mow lawns,
pick up trash, wash vans and help remodel a home
unit. One of his favorite jobs was working with the
electrical crew.
"It was a skill I knew nothing about and now I can
do a few things, like fix a television or lighting,” he
said. “I even got to help put a new air conditioner
in a building and learn how to use an electric saw
and nail gun.”
In addition to developing new skills, Darnell said
he has learned how to communicate more effectively
with others and manage his time.
“The plant staff is great,” he said. “They gave
me a job and trusted me to get it done, and they
were there when I had questions.”
Learning the value of a dollar is one of the most
important lessons Darnell learned.
“Now I know I have to work hard for it,” he said.
Darnell, pictured outside the Perkins Home, has his sights
set on attending Texas A&M University.
“ I hope to instill in our youth a sense
of pride in learning a new skill and
being able to say ‘I can do that.’ ”
Summer is a time to ...
Serve
MCH youth enjoy sharing their gifts
and talents through summer mission
trips and community service projects.
Whether it’s building wheelchair
ramps on mission trips, visiting local
nursing homes or assisting a food
pantry, MCH youth experience the
joy and blessings that come from
serving others.
Amie and Sam were among 10 MCH youth who volunteered
to spend a week of their summer break serving residents
in Santa Fe, Texas. MCH youth joined young people from
across Texas to participate in the U.M. Army mission trip.
The theme of the week was “Act of Worship.”
Youth served elderly residents and others who have
financial needs by helping with home repairs. They also
participated in worship services and enjoyed fellowship as
they built relationships with youth from other churches.
This was the first mission trip for Amie. The highlight of
her week was helping build a ramp for an elderly couple.
“We worked all day in the rain and the wife kept coming
out to check on us,” she said. “She was so appreciative and
thankful. It made me feel good to help her family.”
Sam said the week gave her a greater appreciation for
MCH.
“I realized how much MCH does for us and when I saw
others who are going through adversity, it made me realize
how thankful I need to be,” she said. “I also learned that
when I help people, I’m giving back to God.”
SUMMER FUN PROFILE
Summer offers first-time
experiences for Jonathan
After a busy school year, MCH youth — like all teenagers
— look forward to the summer months as they
have a chance to relax with their friends and enjoy a
variety of fun activities.
Jonathan, a resident on the Waxahachie campus,
participated in several road trips with his friends and
staff, including Six Flags.
“I had never been there, so I had a lot of fun,”
he said. “My favorite ride was a roller coaster called
‘Mr. Freeze.’”
Youth on the Waxahachie campus also enjoyed
outings to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing,
Nasher Art Museum, Dallas Farmer's Market and local
colleges.
Jonathan also had fun visiting with residents in a
local nursing home.
“My grandmother gets lonely sometimes and getting
to meet others who may be lonely really meant
a lot to me,” he said. “I enjoy interacting with new
people and doing new things.”
Jonathan appreciates the opportunities MCH provides youth
to enjoy first-time experiences, such as his trip to Six Flags.
“ The tan lines will fade but the memories
of summer will last forever. ”
COMMUNITY SERVICES
Serving families across Texas and New Mexico
Methodist Children’s Home serves children and families through 11 outreach offices. The stories featured on these pages demonstrate
the unique ways outreach offices are making a difference in the lives of children and families. Watch for additional stories in upcoming
issues of the Sunshine.
HOUSTON
Ladashia excels in school, athletics
Ladashia was voluntarily placed in foster care with MCH when she
was two months old, and she continues to reside with the same
foster family. During her time in care, she has flourished in all areas
of her life. Now a 10 th grader, Ladashia is a member of the A/B
honor roll and has earned varsity letters in track and volleyball.
As a member of the track team, she competes in the 100 meters,
pole vault, triple jump and relay, and she participated in a summer
track program. Ladashia was nominated by one of her teachers
to attend a community involvement program, where she received
hands-on experience with volunteering and raising awareness
about culture differences within the community. This opportunity
has enabled her to contribute 40 hours of community
service, which will enhance her college applications. “Ladashia
enjoys spending time with her family and friends,” said Nicole
Washington, MCH caseworker. “She is a well-rounded child who
receives lots of encouragement and love.”
ABILENE
Julie came into foster care in 2008 with her sister and
two brothers. She was the mother figure to her siblings
and had difficulty adjusting to the new role of being
an adolescent. Through therapy and the care provided
by her foster parents, Julie accepted her new role and
no longer tried to be the mother figure for her siblings.
During her time with MCH, Julie was embraced by
her community. Local residents “adopted” Julie and
helped her with various projects in 4H, UIL and band.
She graduated from high school in May, and she is now
attending community college through MCH.
CORPUS CHRISTI
Theresa, a single mother of three young children, was referred
to MCH by CPS in February to engage in parenting
classes. Theresa successfully completed the classes offered
by MCH. Staff members assisted Theresa with professional
clothing as she started a new job. She continues
to work and utilizes what she has learned with MCH in
her job and family. MCH helped Theresa develop a budget
and assisted her with partial payment for rent and
her electric bill. “Theresa is working hard to maintain a
safe and stable home environment for her children,” said
Marisol Gomez, MCH caseworker.
Ben, a single father, enrolled in MCH’s parenting classes.
He was raised by his grandmother until the age of nine,
when he moved in with his biological mother. While living
with his grandmother, Ben experienced a loving home
filled with faith. Ben’s mother, however, was the opposite.
Due to Ben’s past experience, he struggles with reciprocating
the love that his daughter gives him. After a few
parenting sessions, Ben expressed his gratitude for MCH
because his relationship with his daughter has improved,
and he is learning to be more affectionate. “Ben is on his
way to becoming a nurturing parent and feels more confident
in his ability to provide a safe and loving home for his
daughter,” said Loraynne Rivera, MCH caseworker.

TYLER
Natalie is a 27-year-old mother of five young children, all
of whom have special needs and require constant attention.
Natalie is a hard-working person and dedicated to
her children. She had been in an abusive relationship since
she was 13, and she was recently separated from her husband.
Natalie has had constant harassment from her exhusband
and his family. “When I met Natalie, she was going
through one of the most difficult times of her life,”
said Suzy King, MCH caseworker. “The apartment complex
where she lived burned down and she lost everything. It
was a few weeks before Christmas and all her gifts were
lost in the fire. We were able to provide Christmas gifts
for the kids and a few household items.” MCH helped
Natalie find support at other organizations in her community.
She now receives counseling and has connected with
other mothers who were in abusive relationships.

LUFKIN
Graham came to MCH foster care through CPS when he
was three months old. He is one of eight children and his
mother has had a long history of CPS involvement. Graham
has been with his MCH family for more than a year. He attends
day care and receives services through other community
partners, like Early Childhood Intervention (ECI).
“Graham is showing excellent progress, but there are still
a few issues we are keeping our eyes on in regards to developmental
delays,” said Marie Gateley, MCH caseworker.
Graham’s foster parents have advocated for him in
his developmental and medical needs. They also worked
with CPS to help make Graham available for family visits,
although they were rare. In May, after a year of no improvements,
both of his parents relinquished their parental
rights. Through it all, Graham has formed an amazing
bond with his foster parents, who are preparing to adopt
him. “Even though we never rejoice when parental rights
are terminated, we do rejoice that we have been able
to offer Graham the absolute best care during his stay in
foster care,” Gateley said. “The foster family stayed true
to their commitment to care for him and make his needs
their priority, even while his future was unknown.”
YOUTH PROFILE
Since coming to the
MCH Boys Ranch last
year, Kevin has achieved
success in school and
developed leadership
skills. Staff members say
his “joyful soul” makes
a positive difference at
the Boys Ranch.
Kevin: Breaking the cycle
Kevin lived in a seemingly unbreakable
cycle of criminal behavior
before he came to the
Methodist Children’s Home
Boys Ranch. His grandmother
served as his primary caregiver,
and she gave her best effort
to raise him amidst a challenging
environment.
Kevin spent time in drug
rehabilitation and faced pressure
from his friends to sell illegal
drugs. One day, as he set
out to sell drugs, he was confronted
by the police.
“When they questioned
me, I ran instead of confessing
to what I was doing,” he said.
After the officers caught
Kevin, they found illegal drugs
in his pocket, and he was sent
to a juvenile detention center.
“When I went to court, I
told the judge and my probation
officer that I wanted help,”
Kevin said. “I passed my drug
test and I had stayed sober.”
Kevin’s probation officer
and the judge believed his sincerity.
The judge did not give
Kevin the felony possession
charge he expected. Instead,
he put Kevin on probation and
suggested he visit MCH as an
option for residential living
where he would benefit from
positive influences and a second
chance.
“The first day we met
Kevin, he was dressed in his
Sunday best and he was taking
a tour of the Boys Ranch,”
said Jeanean Slonaker, who
serves as a homeparent along
with her husband, Larry. “We
offered to show him our home
unit and told him that if he
decided to come to the Boys
Ranch, we would love for him
to stay at our house.”
Two weeks later, Kevin
moved to the Boys Ranch,
and he requested to stay at the
Slonakers’ home.
“That’s when he crawled
into my heart,” Jeanean said.
Moving from a negative
environment to the Boys
Ranch helped Kevin experience
personal growth.
“When I came to MCH
as a 17-year-old last year, I
was considered a freshman
in school,” Kevin said. “Now,
I’m getting caught up on my
course credits. I’m a junior
and on track to graduate in
2013.”
In addition to the progress
Kevin has made in school, he
is viewed as a leader in his
home unit.
“Kevin is one of the best
encouragers we have at the
Boys Ranch,” Jeanean said.
“He has a way of reaching out
to his peers in a sincere, respectful
and helpful way.”
Kevin views his time at the
Boys Ranch as a gift.
“MCH means a lot to me,”
Kevin said. “If I didn’t have
the chance to come to the Boys
Ranch, I probably would have
dropped out of school and
continued to sell drugs on the
streets.”
According to Jeanean,
Kevin has a joyful soul, and his
thankfulness shows through
his words and actions.
“Kevin doesn’t blame his
past for where he is today,”
she said. “He looks forward
to each and every day. I think
that is the one thing about him
that will get him through everything
in life. We just really
NEWS & NOTES
Q& A
with Joanna,
Waco campus resident
MCH had many youth
attend camps during the
summer. Joanna attended
a camp sponsored by the
Waco Historic Foundation.
This camp offered youth in
the Waco area a chance to
see what it takes to build a
city and be a good citizen.
We caught up with Joanna
to learn more about her
experience.
What did you do at this
camp? We learned what it
takes to build and govern
a city. We also learned
about agriculture and
emergency services, like
the fire department and
EMTs. The former mayor
of Waco came out and
spoke to us one day.
What was your favorite
memory of the camp?
I really enjoyed seeing
the firemen, fire truck and
ambulances. I got to sit in
the front seat and blow the
siren. That was fun! I also
enjoyed getting to pretend
to be a reporter for the
city and writing stories
about past events.
What did you learn from
this experience?
I learned how much work
it takes to create and run
a city.
Education
Charter School Progress
Reports: MCH’s two charter
schools that serve three
residential campuses are
among the 44 percent of
schools statewide that met
the Adequate Yearly Progress
(AYP) standards, according to
the Texas Education Agency.
MCH serves youth through
the University of Texas
University Charter School
on the Waco campus and
the Southwest School on the
Waxahachie campus.
According to the TEA, a
school or district this year
met AYP requirements if 87
percent or more of their students
passed the state reading/English
language arts test;
83 percent of their students
passed the state mathematics
test; and, depending on grade
level, 95 percent of their students
who participated in the
state testing program had either
a 75 percent graduation
rate or a 90 percent attendance
rate.
“I was very pleased to
learn that our two charter
schools met the standards requirements
for the last school
year, something achieved by
less than half of the schools
in Texas,” said Tim Brown,
MCH president. “I am very
proud of our students, educators
and entire staff for their
hard work, commitment and
extraordinary efforts as they
took hold of hope, saw the
potential for greatness and
moved forward.”
More information about the
2012 AYP report is available
on the TEA website.
ALBAUGH SCHOLARSHIP: MCH awarded its prestigious Albaugh
Scholarship to five alumni for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Recipients are (l-r): Ally Fry, sophomore, Baylor University;
Essence Stowe, sophomore, Texas A&M University; Simona
Tilahun, sophomore, University of Texas at Arlington; Josh
Sheppard, sophomore, University of Texas at Arlington; and
Amber Creason, senior, Texas A&M University (not pictured).
Waxahachie: The Southwest
Charter School on the Waxahachie
campus recognized its
first graduating class on May
23. The graduates are Jerrell,
Ryan and Destianey.
The Waxahachie school
is called the Phoenix, and it
is part of Southwest Schools
based in Houston. The school
serves grades 7-12 and offers
core classes, music appreciation,
The school also celebrated
success on the TAKS tests.
MCH students passed 67 of
72 sections for a 93 percent
passing rate.
“Through our on-campus
school, we are able to better
meet the academic needs of
students, as evidenced in the
increase in grades, improvements
in TAKS scores and
decrease in overall behavioral
referrals,” said Candice
Darwin, administrator.
Seventy-four MCH alumni are enrolled in the following colleges
Q& A
with Yesenia,
Waco campus resident
Yesenia has been involved
with JROTC at her high
school for three years. As a
junior last year, she earned
an impressive 11 awards,
including Cadet of the Year,
the Association of the United
States Army Medal and a
college scholarship.
We talked with Yesenia to
learn more about her involvement
with JROTC.
What motivates you to excel
in JROTC? I like helping
people and I enjoy competition.
I want our JROTC
to be the best, so I strive
to do well myself and help
motivate my fellow cadets to
do well.
What does it mean to you
to be recognized? It means
a lot. I know that others see
my hard work and it motivates
me to do even more.
What are your plans for the
future? I would like to graduate
next year in the top ten
percent of my class. My goal
is to attend the University of
Texas and earn a bachelor’s
degree in biology. My long
term goal is to go to medical
or nursing school.
DEVELOPMENT NEWS
MCH honors estate gifts during Legacy Luncheon
During the annual Legacy Luncheon in June, Methodist
Children’s Home staff and Board members celebrated benefactors
who designated MCH and the children served by this ministry
in their estate plans in 2011.
“This event encourages us to reflect on the great honor of receiving
gifts from our benefactors’ estates and renew our commitment
as stewards of these special resources,” said Trey Oakley,
vice president for development. “Methodist Children’s Home is
able to fulfill our mission because benefactors provide the resources
needed to serve our children today and in the future.”
A unique feature of the Waco campus is the Mulkey Memorial
Garden, which was created to celebrate the generosity of all benefactors
who provide gifts from their estates. The garden is named
in memory of Abe and Louisa Mulkey, who played an important
role as benefactors during the early days of this ministry.
“Their example encouraged others to support the newly-created
orphanage, and this spirit of generosity has enabled MCH to
become a national child care leader that today serves more than
1,400 children from the hard places in life,” Oakley said.
During the luncheon, Oakley offered a personal tribute to seven
benefactors as he shared stories about their lives provided by
family and friends. These benefactors are highlighted below.
If you would like to receive information about remembering
the children in your estate plans, contact Trey Oakley by phone
at (800) 853-1272 or e-mail at toakley@mchforhope.org. All discussions
related to charitable giving are confidential.
Methodist Children’s Home Estate Recognition
The following estates were recognized at the Legacy Luncheon. A plaque honoring
these benefactors is displayed in the Mulkey Memorial Garden. Representatives
from four of the estates attended the luncheon. They are pictured with Tim Brown,
MCH President/CEO, and Bill Bingham, chairperson of the MCH Board of Directors.
BILLIE K. BARTON of Houston married Bernard, who was an alumnus of MCH. He
and two siblings came to MCH after their mother passed. They were members of
First UMC Houston and decided to bless the children served by MCH.
CHANEY J. BEDNAR of Dallas fought at Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge.
He received the Bronze Star for his bravery. He was respected for the love and
care he provided his beloved wife, Veoma. A talented singer, “He actually sang
at his own funeral thanks to a tape he made of his favorite song.”
Woodrow C. Senkel Estate
WILLIAM L. FORE, JR. of Athens was an avid traveler who loved
the children served by MCH. He established a family trust that
named MCH as a beneficiary, thus blessing children for years
to come.
WILLIAM L. MACHEMEHL of Houston was “Mr. Fix It” to his loved
ones. He and his wife, Alberta, were married for more than 62
years and faithful members of the Methodist Church. In addition
to serving his country in WWII, he was a gifted musician.
VIOLA C. ROBERTS of Goldthwaite was known as a true southern
lady. She and her husband, Gus, were members of First UMC
Goldthwaite and decided they would bless MCH with an estate gift.
After his passing, she “never wavered from that decision.”
Viola C. Roberts Estate
William L. Machemehl Estate
WOODROW C. SENKEL of Amarillo based his life on “faith, family and friends.” He
was a talented musician and member of the Andrews High School Mustang Band.
A commanding officer stated that Master Sergeant Senkel was the most dependable
non-commissioned officer with whom he had ever served.
MARILYN H. WILKINSON of Santa Fe, NM was a “pioneer of her time.” A childhood
illness caused her to become deaf. She and her husband, Don, who was also
deaf, blessed others through St. John’s UMC in Santa Fe and his work at the New
Mexico School for the Deaf.
