PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE 

Helping youth discover a promising future 

In recent weeks, I had the privilege of joining other staff members and our teachers as we 

celebrated the achievements of our graduating seniors. I enjoyed listening to our seniors reflect on 

their time at Methodist Children’s Home as they prepared to move on to new challenges. Without 

fail, these young men and women expressed their gratitude for the commitment and dedication of 

staff members who influenced their lives. 

I am proud to be part of a staff that enables this ministry to offer 

hope to at-risk children, youth and their families. Each year, 

many of our graduates admit that they would not have reached 

this important milestone had they not come to Methodist 

Children’s Home. Before their placement, they struggled with 

school failure, broken relationships and a sense of hopelessness. 

However, through relationships with caring adults who express 

God’s love through their daily lives, these young people develop 

their unique gifts and abilities and discover a promising future. 

As part of our annual report in this issue of Sunshine, we share 

examples of young people and staff members who exemplify our 

mission and core values – Christian principles, relationships, 

responsibility, service, growth and hope. I believe these stories 

will encourage you as we work together to influence the lives of 

children across Texas and New Mexico.

Christian Principles 

APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH WHICH SERVE 

AS THE FOUNDATION FOR THIS MINISTRY. 

Answering God’s call 

Pablo Villanueva believes God has called 

him to share his faith with youth at the Boys 

Ranch through his daily work as recreation 

coordinator. As a former resident of the 

Boys Ranch, Villanueva understands the 

challenges that come with that calling. 

“I know what’s going through their 

minds because I’ve been there,” Villanueva 

said. “It’s easy to talk about God around

When Villanueva was placed at the Boys Ranch in the 1990s, he had little interest 

in living at the Ranch and did not want to hear about how God could change his life. 

However, through encouragement from his homeparents, Norm and Jude Champagne, 

and his caseworker, Kenneth Alexander, Villanueva decided to stay at the Ranch, and 

he later became a Christian through the influence of his staff. 

“Becoming a Christian is the only reason I survived my teenage years,” Villanueva 

said. “My faith in Christ kept me alive.” 

Villanueva is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Boys Ranch staff, and like 

other staff members at Methodist Children’s Home, he considers it a personal mission. 

“I believe God called me here and I want to give the boys a chance to learn more 

about Him,” he said. 

During the spring, Villanueva and Karen Melton, program director at the Boys 

Ranch, began a Bible study. Villanueva shows a short Christian video, then leads the 

boys in a discussion about lessons they can learn from the video and the Bible. Although 

only one youth showed up for the first Bible study, they averaged about 10 boys 

by the end of the semester. 

“I knew it would take a while for some of our boys to become interested,” 

Villanueva said. “As time went on, a few of the boys began to talk about issues they 

were facing.” 

Markies, a Boys Ranch resident, has experienced the benefits of participating in 

the Bible study. 

“It has helped me deal with my anger and get closer to God,” he said. 

Tyler, another Ranch resident, also believes the Bible study has helped him grow. 

“It has helped me to behave and go down the right road,” he said. 

Villanueva is thankful that God is working through the Bible study to affect the 

lives of young people, and he feels blessed to be part of a ministry to at-risk youth. 

“It is very fulfilling to be able to do what God has called me to do at a place that 

has done so much for me,” he said.

Learning to lead 

Although Grum is a well-respected leader in 

his home unit today, he admits he was not 

concerned about being a responsible teen 

when he arrived at Methodist Children’s 

Home three years ago. 

Born in Ethiopia, Grum moved to the 

United States with his mother when he was 

a small child. They settled in the Dallas area 

and began the difficult task of adjusting 

to life in the U.S. As Grum moved into his 

early teens, he spent time with the wrong 

crowd and acted out against authority. After 

much debate, his mother decided she

needed to find help for them. 

“Mom wanted to save me from that Responsibility 

life,” Grum said. “I’m thankful now, but I 

wasn’t at the time.”

him develop a sense of responsibility

to his mother that he needed more help than she could offer. 

When Grum arrived at the Home, he was reluctant to establish relationships and 

trust the staff. 

“I thought that if I was bad enough they would just let me go back home,” Grum 

said. “I pushed back a lot at first. I acted out pretty bad.” 

The pivotal change came when Grum talked with one of his homeparents, 

Genevie Ratliff. 

“She told me to quit trying to fight because I wasn’t going to win,” Grum said. “I 

don’t know why, but that stuck with me and really helped me change.” 

After that conversation, things started to change for Grum. He began to see that 

the staff was there for him and really wanted to make his life more meaningful. 

Soon, he began to rise up as a leader in his home and on campus. His behavior 

is now an example to others. In fact, students and faculty at the MCH charter school 

selected Grum as the prince of the 2009 Prom. 

“I really try to be responsible and be an example to new kids at home and at 

school,” Grum said. 

Grum is also learning responsibility through his part-time job at a local restaurant, 

where he has been promoted from an entry-level position to his current job as 

fry cook. 

“I just worked hard and listened to my boss,” Grum said. “Being at the Home has 

helped me learn to be a responsible worker and a responsible person.” 

Residential Care 

MCH provides residential care through the 

Waco campus, Boys Ranch and a satellite 

campus in Waxahachie. 

The Waco campus serves 180 young people 

ages 12-18. Residents live in 16 homes on 

the 130-acre campus. 

The Boys Ranch serves 50 youth ages 12-18 

on a 500-acre ranch northeast of Waco. 

The Waxahachie satellite campus serves 20 

young people ages 12-18. 

The University of Texas Charter School on the 

Waco campus serves youth in grades 7-12. 

The charter school offers extracurricular activities 

for students, such as choir, athletics 

and other leadership groups.

time in 4H. Youth won 

several awards for photography 

and baking at 

4H competitions. Boys 

Ranch residents were 

recognized dfor their work with animals and 

shop projects through FFA. 

Youth attend Sunday morning worship services 

on the Waco campus or at a designated 

church. Residents can also participate in 

religious education activities, mission trips, 

camps and Bible studies. 

MCH residents contribute more than 10,000 

hours to community service projects during 

the summer.

Community Services 

MCH has outreach and satellite offices in 

Abilene, Bedford, Corpus Christi, Crockett, 

Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Lubbock, 

San Antonio, Sulphur Springs, Tyler and 

Waco. MCH also has an outreach office in 

Albuquerque, NM, and serves youth through 

a foster care group home in Jayton. 

MCH is licensed by the 

Texas Department of 

Family and Protective 

Services to provide foster 

care in Texas, and accredited 

by the Council 

on Accreditation. 

Foster care at MCH is unique because many 

children are voluntarily placed by their parents 

or legal guardians who then retain full 

legal custody of their children. 

MCH foster care is designed to provide a 

temporary living arrangement — typically six 

to 18 months — until the parents are able to 

resume parenting. 

Each outreach office provides a variety of 

community services, such as Partnership in 

Parenting (PIP). The goal of PIP is to work 

with families in an effort to prevent out-of 

home placement of children. 

Staff in the outreach offices network with 

other local provider agencies to identify 

family needs and provide tangible services to 

help families become self-sustaining.

range from birth to 18 years of age. 

Service 

SHOW COMPASSION THROUGH GENEROSITY AND CARE. 

A passion to serve 

A recent graduate of Texas A&M University, Heather is every bit the Aggie. She even self 

describes as “bleeding” maroon and white. During her time at A&M, Heather took part 

in a tradition called Aggie Muster, a time when Aggies across the world come together 

to celebrate their university and remember their fellow Aggies. 

“It is an awesome tradition and it reminds me why I love my university,” Heather 

said. “But it is definitely not the first time I have felt a part of something significantly 

bigger than me.” 

Events like Aggie Muster remind Heather of the exhilarating feeling of serving 

and being a part of the larger Methodist Children’s Home community. It was her time 

at MCH that helped Heather see the importance of serving and celebrating her community. 

Since graduating from the Home in 2005 and transitioning to life at Texas 

A&M, Heather has consistently chosen to define her life by her service to others. 

Serving as a volunteer at Family Promise, a College Station outreach to the homeless, 

has allowed Heather to come to terms with her own past and find healing. 

“As a pre-teen I was homeless for over a year,” Heather said. “I’ve been able to use 

that experience to minister to the young families at Family Promise. I was blessed that 

my family found Methodist Children’s Home. Not only did the Home give me hope for a 

new life, but it also gave me a passion to use that life for serving others.” 

Heather will spend the next year traveling the world with a Christian missions 

organization. She will visit Romania, Ireland, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, 

Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. She plans to use this year as a springboard into a 

life dedicated to serving Christ. 

“I think the biggest thing I learned at the Home was the idea of meeting basic living 

needs in order to begin meeting spiritual needs,” Heather said. “Methodist Children’s 

Home did that for me — now I want to do it for others.”

Growth 

PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, 

AND INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT. 

Life lessons 

Woodcarvings of the words “believe” and 

“patience” motivate students and staff in 

Angie Hammond’s science classroom at the 

MCH charter school. 

They are an especially meaningful 

source of encouragement when students 

prepare for the state’s TAKS tests, which 

determine whether they advance to the next 

grade level or graduate from high school. 

In February, Hammond worked with 

Willis learned to believe in himself 

three seniors who needed to pass the science 

TAKS test to graduate. One of those teacher, Angie Hammond. 

through the commitment of his science 

students, Willis, returned to MCH during the spring after leaving the Home last year. 

He had only two weeks to prepare for the TAKS. 

Hammond committed as much time as possible to help Willis study for the test. 

They spent hours going over science concepts and working on his vocabulary and reading 

skills so he could understand questions on the exam. Getting Willis to the point 

where he believed he could pass the test was the greatest challenge. 

“Willis thought he was a failure because he didn’t pass a previous TAKS test,” 

Hammond said. “I told him that I didn’t want to hear that word come out of his mouth. 

I told him that failure is giving up and not trying. He tried his best to pass that test.” 

Hammond’s encouragement inspired Willis. She said he gave “110 percent” to prepare 

for the TAKS test. 

“We worked hard every day and she kept pushing me,” Willis said. “She put it in 

my head that I could pass the test.” 

After Willis took the TAKS, Hammond said she was more anxious than he was to 

find out his results. One afternoon, she returned to her classroom and found a note on 

her desk. The note listed the names of the three seniors who needed to pass the TAKS to 

graduate. Next to each name was written the word “passed.” 

“I couldn’t believe it,” Hammond said. “I threw that note to the ceiling, I was so 

excited.” She then went on a search to find Willis. 

“When I told him that he passed, he started jumping around, dancing and screaming 

with excitement,” Hammond said. 

Hammond said the other seniors had similar reactions when they heard their news. 

“Those are the moments when I’m reminded that our efforts as teachers are worth 

it,” Hammond said. “Their reactions are the ultimate rewards for teachers.” 

Looking back on his journey, Willis appreciates Hammond’s commitment to his 

personal growth and success. 

“It felt good to know that she wanted to spend so much time with me,” he said. 

“She not only helped me with my test, she helped me become a better person. She 

helped me see the big picture.” 


Transition Services 

The Transition Services Program provides 

support for former residents, ages 18-25, as 

they adjust to independent living.

juniors and seniors 

as they prepare 

for graduation and 

pursue advanced education or enter the 

workforce. 

Residents who graduate from high school 

while under the care of the Home are eligible 

to apply for financial assistance from 

MCH to help meet their college expenses. 

MCH graduates have recently attended 

Baylor University, the University of Texas at 

Austin, Texas A&M University, the University 

of North Texas, Stephen F. Austin University, 

Tarleton State University, McLennan Community 

College and other universities and 

community colleges throughout Texas. 

Prevention Services 

The Grandparents as Parents Program 

(GAPP) supports the increasing number 

of grandparents who serve as the primary 

caregivers for their grandchildren. 

GAPP services include case management, 

parent education, support groups and limited 

financial assistance. 

MCH provides a recreational and educational 

program for at-risk children in Crockett, 

Texas. The program offers tutoring, recreation 

and community service projects.

Hope 

BELIEVE IN THE POSSIBILITIES OF THE FUTURE. 

Ways to Support MCH 

MCH is grateful for the support we receive 

from individuals, churches, classes and other 

organizations. The following are ways you 

can become actively involved in this ministry: 

Pray for our children and staff. We believe 

in the power of prayer. Every day we witness 

the results of prayer. 

Provide a gift to the children. Your financial 

support allows our children to be raised in a 

strength-based, spiritually-grounded environment. 

Everything you give is used directly for 

the children we serve. 

Plan a trip to Waco to tour the campus and 

Boys Ranch and see how your prayers and 

gifts help save and change lives. 

Remember the children in your will. Take 

care of your family first, and then decide to 

make our children a part of your legacy. 

Call the Home to set up a speaking event at 

your church or for your Sunday School class 

or special program. 

Ask your local church staff if your church supports 

the Home. We receive no funds from 

apportionments. We depend on giving from 

individuals like you from churches like yours. 

Share the story of the Home with someone 

you know. You can help us tell others about 

the special work God is doing for children 

through this ministry.

A promising future 

Monica is a bright, responsible and 

mature young woman in the Methodist 

Children’s Home foster care program. 

A star on her high school volleyball and 

softball teams and an honor roll student, 

she excels in sports and academics. However, 

things have not always been this 

hopeful for Monica. 

“Things weren’t always this good,” 

she said. “Before coming to Methodist 

Children’s Home, my parents really struggled 

to provide for us.”

lives, the responsibility of caring for the three youngest children fell to Monica. She 

made their meals, helped keep them clean and sent them off to school. With the pressure 

of caring for her siblings, young Monica gradually placed less emphasis on school. 

“It wasn’t that I didn’t want to go to school,” Monica said. “We just didn’t always 

get there because of little things. And that made me fall behind.” 

Monica, then an elementary school student, was already at a disadvantage in 

school. With Spanish as her primary language, communicating in English was a challenge, 

and missing school prevented her from grasping the subtleties of the language. 

“I didn’t know if I would ever be able to do well in school,” Monica said. 

When she moved in with the Brookhouse/Lewis family to begin foster care 

through Methodist Children’s Home, Monica blossomed and became a leader at school. 

“I loved the attention and being able to focus more on school,” Monica said. “It was 

such a blessing to basically get another set of great parents.” 

Monica’s foster mother, Lecia Lewis, remembers when Monica joined their family. 

“It was like she was experiencing freedom,” Lewis said. “She was able to relax and 

just be a kid. It was hard to convince her to stop trying to take care of everyone.” 

Monica’s caring nature helped her quickly settle into life with her foster family. 

When they received the good news of Monica’s permanent placement with them, her 

foster parents decided to send her to the private school where Lisa worked and their 

own children attended school. The small school has been a good fit for Monica and encouraged 

her to develop her mind and body through academics and athletics. 

“Being in this school and having the support of my foster parents has been amazing,” 

Monica said. “I know that the only reason I am looking toward college is because 

of Methodist Children’s Home.” 

While she’s unsure what her future holds, Monica knows she wants to give back. 

“I just want to say thank you for all I’ve been given,” Monica said. “My life is really 

wonderful.”

Recognizing the friends of Methodist Children’s Home for outstanding contributions 

in the support of children throughout Texas and New Mexico 

What is the Circle of Friends? 

The Circle of Friends was created by the 

Board of Directors in 1990 at the beginning 

of our second century of ministry 

to children. It is designed to give appropriate 

recognition and expressions 

of appreciation to those who generously 

support Methodist Children’s Home 

boys and girls. The Circle of Friends 

does not include all gifts to the MCH 

endowment fund. 

Who can join the Circle of Friends? 

Individuals, businesses, United Methodist 

Women and Men’s groups, Sunday School 

classes and civic organizations may be 

members of the Circle of Friends. 

What if I do not want my name 

publicly announced? 

In January, we mail a card to each 

donor asking for permission to list his 

or her name in our Circle of Friends. We 

only print the names of those who have 

returned the card, granting permission 

to print. We respect your privacy and the 

confidentiality of your gifts. At any time, 

you may indicate that you wish all gifts to 

remain unrecognized and we will mark 

your record accordingly. 

Will my church receive credit if I send 

my gift directly to the Home? 

Yes, when you request church credit. We 

routinely send all gifts back through the 

annual conference treasurer for church 

credit, just as your church treasurer does 

when a Methodist Children’s Home gift 

is given through the church. Please let us 

know the name of your church when you 

make your gift. 

Methodist Children’s Home does not 

receive any funds through apportionments. 

All giving to the Home is through 

the free will of those who love Methodist 

Children’s Home boys and girls and who 

give generously, above and beyond gifts to 

the local church.
