In this issue of Sunshine, we reflect 

on the legacy of generosity 

that describes so many of our 

friends throughout Texas, New 

Mexico and the nation. This generosity 

is magnified at Christmas. 

We are honored to receive support 

at Christmas from churches, 

classes and individuals because we 

know that many other ministries 

are also seeking your charitable 

gifts. Many of our supporters carry that same spirit of generosity 

throughout the year. As a result, the hopeful message 

we encounter at Christmas is proclaimed daily through nurturing 

relationships, programs and services, and once-in-alifetime 

opportunities for children. 

While we focus on a few examples of benefactors in this 

issue, our staff and leadership are fully aware of the countless 

persons who model this spirit we celebrate with their 

gifts of time, talents and resources. We are blessed to know 

we can count on so many friends to help meet the daily 

needs of the children, youth and families we serve. Our staff 

often talks about the responsibility we have to practice good 

stewardship and ensure our current benefactors are connected 

to our work. We do this so that we can one day pass on 

this ministry to others who will continue to fulfill our mission 

at the highest level. 

As you read this issue of Sunshine, you will be encouraged by 

the ways your gifts help save and change lives. You support 

a ministry that understands that the gifts we receive are not 

the property of our staff; they belong to those in our care. 

Your generosity empowers us to find the most effective ways 

to provide programs and services that help change lives. We 

are accountable to you, our supporters, to carry out these 

services in the most efficient manner possible. 

I invite you to plan a time in 2013 when you can tour our 

Waco campus and Boys Ranch to learn more about the ways 

your support is impacting the lives of children, youth and 

families. We are very excited about the Perkins Heritage 

Home and Visitors Center that opened in December. This facility 

celebrates our rich history and examines how we believe 

God is leading us to do even more to offer hope to children, 

youth and their families from Texas and New Mexico.

hroughout its 123-year history, Methodist Children’s 

Home has been blessed to have tens of thousands 

of benefactors who have opened their hearts to the Tyouth and families of this ministry. These friends of MCH 

have kept it thriving for well over a century by giving of their 

talents, time and treasure in support of the mission to offer 

hope to children, youth and families throughout Texas and 

New Mexico. 

Even from the beginning, the doors of the Methodist 

Children’s Home were able to stay open because of its loyal 

friends. In the late 1890s, the Reverend Abe Mulkey and his 

wife Louisa were famous evangelists traveling from city to 

city, and their ministry included spreading the word about 

the Methodist orphanage. The funds they raised literally 

kept the orphanage afloat during its early years. 

Forty years later, another family took special notice of 

MCH when Joe Perkins saw a group of children playing on 

the front lawn of MCH and decided to give them a bushel 

of apples. From there his generosity grew and he passed on 

his passion to the next generations. His family hosted annual 

Christmas parties at MCH for 70 years where children 

were entertained by special guests and treated to candy and 

money. Although this tradition is somewhat different, it still 

continues today. The Perkins and Prothro families were also 

instrumental in raising support to build cottage-style home 

units that make the Waco campus what it is today. 

Although the faces and names have changed throughout 

the years, the kindness shown 

by these friends and others has 

remained. This next generation 

of benefactors has become 

a beloved part of the MCH family 

and continues to bring joy 

and a renewed sense of worth to 

children, youth and families of 

Methodist Children’s Home. 

“These gifts send a message 

to each child that someone out 

there loves and cares for them. 

For some of our youth that may 

be the first time they have received 

that message,” said Trey 

Oakley, vice president of development 

at MCH.

The Methodist Orphans Home Ball Jar 

Since Methodist Children’s Home was established 

in 1890, it has been blessed by faithful benefactors 

who have provided fi nancial gifts and gifts-in-kind to 

support this ministry. One of MCH’s great treasures, 

an original Methodist Orphans Home canning jar, is 

displayed in the new Perkins Heritage Home Visitors 

Center on the Waco campus. 

When Dr. Hubert Johnson became the Home’s 

fi fth administrator in 1933, he established a 

“give what you have” campaign to enlist support for 

the agency during times of economic hardship. The 

canning jars were distributed to churches and other 

friends, who fi lled them with fruits and vegetables to 

help feed the children at the Home. 

Although the jar has been out of circulation for 

many years, it serves as a symbol of the sacrifi ce and 

generosity of every friend who has supported this ministry 

through fi nancial gifts and gifts-in-kind.

Christmas blessings 

Tom and Pam Gregory, members of First UMC Rockwall 

and other friends continue a 14-year tradition of giving 

C 

hristmas is a special time 

at MCH, but it can also be 

an emotional time for some of 

the youth who have come from 

hard places. Each year, youth 

at the Waco and Boys Ranch 

campuses come together for a 

special Christmas worship service 

in the chapel before returning 

to their home units to celebrate 

and open gifts. One particular 

year stood out for Tom 

and Pam Gregory, long-time 

supporters of MCH and members 

of First United Methodist 

Church in Rockwall. The 

Gregorys’ church plays an integral 

part of the MCH Christmas 

season, providing gifts for all youth in residential care. 

The Gregorys were visiting the Prothro home unit and waiting 

for the girls to return from the service. As the girls arrived, 

Tom noticed two girls were on each side of one girl and she 

was crying. As he rushed to her side thinking she had fallen, he 

was informed she was not hurt, just embarrassed. He said he 

asked her why she was embarrassed and her reply still melts 

his heart to this day. She said, “‘Mr. Gregory, this is 

my first Christmas. I’ve never had this before. I have 

only heard of this, only seen it on TV. I’ve never had a 

Christmas present before.” 

After initially providing gifts for 40 foster 

care children 14 years ago, Tom and Pam 

Gregory now lead an effort to provide 

gifts for all youth in residential care.

“My wife and I drove away that night and didn’t say much 

all the way back to Rockwall,” Tom said. “We knew we had 

done something good, but even more important than that, we 

knew God was using us as His instrument to do good – just as 

the scripture tells us to do.” 

The Gregorys began this tradition of giving to MCH 14 

years ago. The couple hosted an annual Christmas party for 

their friends who always brought gifts of appreciation. Pam 

came up with the idea to redirect the generosity of her guests 

to Methodist Children’s Home. Similar to an angel tree, guests 

would ‘adopt’ some of the children at MCH and provide presents 

for them at Christmas. The 

first year, the group provided gifts 

for around 40 MCH foster care 

children. The second year, the 

group added youth at the Boys 

Ranch to the list. 

“The third year, I thought 

my wife was crazy when she 

declared that we would pro- 


vide for each and every child living at MCH,” Tom said. “I could 

not see how every child would be accounted for and felt the 

financial burden would be too great, but I was over ruled and 

so the tradition began in earnest. Remarkably, every child was 

spoken for and provided for, either through our neighborhood 

or through our church. It has been this way since that time.” 

Starting in September for the past 11 years, Pam Gregory 

and Denise Ondrey, student activities coordinator at MCH, 

begin to gather wish lists and coordinate efforts. Even up until 

the last day before the Carols and Candles service, they compare 

notes to make sure no one is unaccounted for. Pam then 

takes the lists back to Rockwall to rally the generous troops, 

which include First UMC Rockwall clergy, staff, Sunday school 

classes, United Methodist Women and the Gregorys’ neighbors 

and other friends. 

“It is a big event when the angel tree comes out after 

Thanksgiving. There’s actually some good-hearted pushing 

and shoving going on amongst church members to get to the 

angel tree first!” Tom said. 

In their support of MCH, First UMC Rockwall went from 

a consistent giving church to one of the top giving churches 

in Texas, according to Trey Oakley, vice president for development. 

He said they are showing MCH youth that they care 

during a crucial time of year. 

“Christmas is such a special time of year but for some of 

our children it is a very challenging time of year. What Rockwall

and many of our benefactors provide is an opportunity for our 

young people to celebrate and experience the joy of opening 

special presents purchased just for them,” Oakley said. 

The Gregorys along with several other members of the 

group celebrate with MCH each year during Carols and Candles. 

This sentiment really speaks to the youth living at MCH. 

“The girls absolutely loved having them here,” said Christina 

Gerhardt, unit manager for the Prothro home. “The one thing 

that was said over and over by the girls was that they felt special 

that the Rockwall folks wanted to spend time with them and 

were so generous with Christmas gifts. One of my girls said she 

couldn’t believe they took time to come down from Rockwall to 

spend time with them for the Christmas celebration.” 

This relationship has grown throughout the years, and 

First UMC Rockwall and the Gregorys have become special 

friends of MCH. Pam treats the Prothro girls to an annual trip 

to Rockwall for church and lunch. The group also sends birthday 

cards, Easter gifts and some Valentine’s Day presents. 

“We have decided Christmas is great and we will continue 

our Christmas endeavors with MCH, but there’s also a tremendous 

opportunity to touch a child’s life the other 364 days of 

the year,” Tom said. “It is a blessing for me and Pam to have 

gotten involved so deeply with MCH.”

Childhood Memories 

First United Methodist Church of Grapevine continues 

tradition of giving that began in the 1980s

wo single mothers in Sweetwater, Texas, who live in the 

same neighborhood have formed a special friendship to 

provide each other support during rough times. Although they 

can rely on this emotional support, both have limited resources 

in their community and struggle financially, especially at 

Christmas. But this year, thanks to a tradition that has lasted 

over 20 years, their children received shiny new bicycles under 

their trees on Christmas morning. Tracy Whalen, a caseworker 

in the Abilene outreach office, said the mothers were appreciative 

of the gifts provided to their children. 

“Unknowingly, two of the children even received bicycles 

in their favorite colors,” Whalen said. “The children would not 

have received Christmas gifts without this program. I look forward 

to visiting the families in the new year to see the children’s 

excitement.” 

These bicycles were part of an annual donation made by 

First United Methodist Church of Grapevine. This generous tradition 

began in the late 1980s when several church members involved 

with MCH saw a need for bicycles for the children. They 

began refurbishing a handful of used bicycles each year.

Members of First United Methodist Church of Grapevine have 

donated bikes and riding helmets to MCH since the late 1980s. 

Children and youth served by MCH’s residential and community 

services programs are blessed by the church’s generosity. 

Since then, the project has been passed to another Sunday 

School group who has turned the endeavor into a full-fledged 

campaign, providing bicycles and helmets to every child and 

youth who wants one. Scott Kanaga of First UMC Grapevine 

leads the effort.

Damion, a resident at the Boys Ranch, helps unload bikes on the 

Waco campus. First UMC Grapevine donated 106 bicycles this year 

for MCH’s residential campuses and outreach offices. 

“Our entire church looks forward to this project every 

year, and even though our Sunday School class leads and organizes 

the project, this is the church’s project and everyone 

looks forward to it. It really is not Christmas for us until this 

project rolls around each year,” Kanaga said. 

The project starts off each September when the church 

communicates with MCH to see how many bicycles are desired. 

The church then establishes a preliminary budget and 

begins working with a sporting goods store in Grapevine to select 

bicycles and negotiate costs. By early November, the store 

gets back with First UMC Grapevine with the total costs for 

bicycles, helmets and accessories. Kanaga then finalizes the 

budget to present to the church administrator who submits 

the fundraising request for approval by the finance committee. 

Fundraising lasts for three to four weeks. 

On the Friday before the scheduled Saturday delivery, 

church representatives rent a truck and pick up all the bicycles. 

They then take the bicycles back to a group of 75-80 volunteers 

who spend the next four hours assembling and inspecting the 

bicycles. Then, the bikes are reloaded and delivered to MCH for 

youth to enjoy by Christmas. 

“This project has so many ways to participate and plug in 

that we see many different faces from year to year. Some of the 

same people have been with us throughout the years but we 

see a lot of new faces each year which really keeps the project 

new and fresh,” Kanaga said. 

Trey Oakley, vice president for development, said this 

generous donation has become a fond memory of many youth. 

“It’s one of our most consistent traditions. When alumni 

come back and speak about the generosity they received here, 

they frequently bring up the bike they received and were able 

to take home with them when they left MCH,” Oakley said. 

In December 2012, First UMC Grapevine donated 106 bicycles 

to the Waco campus, Boys Ranch, Waxahachie campus and 

outreach offices. Several bicycles are used by the recreation 

department for activities and summer clubs. 

“We truly appreciate the donation. The bikes provide us 

another opportunity to get outside and build relationships 

with youth,” said Beth Harris, recreation coordinator for MCH. 

“Youth feel a sense of accomplishment as they return to campus 

from a bike ride. It is tough to ride up and down all the 

hills just to leave and return from campus, and our young people 

work hard to finish every ride.” 

Oakley adds that the generosity of First UMC Grapevine 

provides a fun experience for children and youth. 

“Many of our youth have gone through trauma and disappointment 

and grown up too fast,” Oakley said. “When our 

friends at First UMC Grapevine donate these bicycles, they 

are creating a special childhood memory for our children and 

youth. For many of these children, it is the first bike they have 

ever owned.”

Goldthwaite Hunt 

United Methodist volunteers continue 30-year tradition 

of mentoring MCH youth during annual deer hunt 

here is just something 

T special about sitting 

outside in the cold, hearing 

the sounds of nature and 

waiting patiently for a few 

moments of excitement. As 

described by MCH President 

Tim Brown, while out on a 

hunt, there are no distractions 

– no phones, video games 

or complications – just good 

conversation, fellowship, a 

simple purpose and a lot of 

opportunity for learning. 

Each year in December, 

MCH youth are treated to a 

hunting trip in Goldthwaite, 

Texas. The tradition began 

around 30 years ago by 

Thurman Head, a member 

of the Tri-County Methodist 

Men. Head first became 

involved with MCH as a 

Wrangler for the Boys Ranch. 

The Wranglers, many 

of whom were also members 

of the Tri-County Men, consisted of a group of ranchers who 

helped to get the Boys Ranch started by donating supplies and 

livestock, assisting with building fencing and pens, and teaching 

the boys how to maintain the ranch. Head, as one of the leading 

laypeople for the Southwest Texas Conference, was instrumental 

in getting a number of local ranchers involved. His influence 

also kicked off the annual Goldthwaite Hunt, a MCH tradition 

that continues today. 

Head, an active supporter of MCH, had heard about a similar 

hunt that was sponsored by Operation Orphans. He decided 

he wanted to sponsor his own hunt and bring some of the youth 

from the Boys Ranch to his land in Goldthwaite. He enlisted the 

help of the Tri-County Men to donate the use of their land as well. 

Tri-County Methodist Men and other friends host a group of MCH 

youth for an annual deer hunt and fellowship in Goldthwaite. 

Originally developed for youth at the Boys Ranch, the hunt now 

includes boys and girls from the Waco campus.

“My father recognized a need and he wanted to help these 

youth have an extra learning experience,” said Tommy Head, 

Thurman’s son. “He thought having older men as guides could 

provide father figures for these youth.” 

Many of the Tri-County Men and several volunteers 

throughout the state who hunt annually in the area act as hunting 

guides and mentors and continue to participate each year. 

All of the youth are provided with gear, guns and ammunition. 

They must obtain a hunting license and complete a hunting 

safety course prior to the hunt. 

Lloyd, a resident of the Boys Ranch, has participated in 

these hunts for the past two years. He said he shot three deer on 

his first trip out, stating it was “the best day I ever had.” 

“This opportunity means having a chance to do something 

that I would not be able to do at home regularly, and the chance 

to spend time building relationships with staff and my peers,” 

Lloyd said. “The men who take us on the hunt are always very 

nice and supportive. They are always happy to take us and we 

have a great time.” 

The hunt has now grown to include youth from both the 

Waco and Boys Ranch campuses. They are taught to respect 

the land and only hunt for the purpose of providing food. In the 

early years of the hunts, the youth brought back the meat to the 

campus for processing. However, now the deer meat is donated 

to a Goldthwaite food pantry and used to feed the homeless. 

Brown said the meat provided to the food pantry the previous 

year fed the homeless for an entire year. 

“This is part of a Christian mission to help those who are 

less fortunate and teach our youth to be generous by giving back 

to the Goldthwaite community,” Brown said. 

After the hunt, the group comes together for dinner organized 

by Thurman Head’s daughter, Kathi Campbell, and provided 

by Star United Methodist Church to enjoy good food and 

tell stories about their day. Tommy remembered a story from 

his experience as a guide about a youth who shot his first deer. 

“I offered to help him carry the deer back to the truck. But

he was so proud he put it on his back and carried it all the way 

back by himself,” he said. 

Thurman Head passed away a few weeks before the last 

hunt in December 2012. Tommy and his sister Kathi plan to 

keep their father’s legacy and tradition alive. Tommy said he 

believes these hunts are an opportunity for the youth to have a 

good experience with adults. 

Brown, whose own sons have attended the hunts for several 

years, said this is a valuable tradition for MCH. He said it is an 

opportunity for the youth to experience a simpler way of life and 

build relationships with the ranchers and guides. 

“The men love our youth and make them feel important,” 

he said. “They remember them year to year. That’s a powerful 

thing for our youth – to be able to hang out with people who remember 

them and are teaching them positive things. It shows 

them they are important.”

to you? 

I never thought I could draw. 

Mrs. Roberts really encouraged 

me and pushed me to 

learn more. Being chosen 

was really exciting. I have 

never been in a competition 

before much less won anything. 

My family was really 

happy for me. 

Ag Science 

Show Season Results: MCH 

students in the Ag Science 

and FFA programs recorded 

a strong showing this fall, 

winning numerous awards 

in competitions. One of 

the highlights came at the 

2012 Heart O’ Texas Fair 

and Rodeo where MCH won 

the Sweepstakes Award for 

Ag Mechanics. Out of 20 total 

shop projects, MCH won 

seven first-place awards, two 

second-place awards and two 

third-place awards. The Ag 

Science program is taught by 

Steve Kruse. 

Waco Campus 

MCH added street signs to the Waco 

Campus in January to make it easier for 

visitors and emergency personnel to find 

their way around campus. The street 

names communicate important aspects of 

MCH’s history, mission and current programs. 

The six street names are: Sunshine 

Street, Heritage Trail, Bulldog Drive, Faith 

Way, Hope Street and Legacy Lane. 

The University of Texas-University Charter School at MCH celebrated 

its Homecoming in October. Members of this year’s Homecoming 

Court were, from left, Kristin, Ashley and Kandaja. Ashley was 

elected Homecoming Queen. 

Jericho, how do you feel 

about the competition? 

I always enjoyed my grandmother’s 

artwork. She was 

very creative. When she 

passed I decided to try it. It 

helps me feel connected to 

her and I have found I have 

some of her talent. It will be 

fun to see how we all do in 

the overall competition.

Athletics: Dalton earns six-man football honors 

Dalton, a Boys Ranch resident and senior at MCH, 

was an honorable mention selection for the Waco 

Tribune-Herald’s 2012 Super Centex Team for 

six-man football. Dalton set both the MCH passing 

yards and passing touchdowns record with 

1,947 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also 

had 505 rushing yards and 13 rushing 

touchdowns. Dalton set the 

record for the most total yards

Since moving from a 

teaching position to the 

role of unit manager at 

the Boys Ranch, Dorothy 

Phillips has discovered 

new ways to build relationships 

with youth.

Dorothy Phillips followed her 

heart and decided it was time 

to make a change. 

After finishing her counseling 

degree, she made 

the transition from teacher 

at the University of Texas- 

University Charter School 

on the Waco campus to unit 

manager at the Boys Ranch 

in October 2012. Little did 

she know that this decision 

would have such a big impact 

on her as well as the youth. 

In only a short time, 

Phillips and the youth in her 

home unit have developed a 

strong connection. Phillips 

said she has been able to 

build positive relationships 

with the boys by gaining 

their trust and respect, letting 

them know she is an advocate 

for them, and always keeping 

their best interest at heart. 

“The youth have to know 

you have a genuine desire in 

your heart to want to build 

a relationship with them,” 

Phillips said. “You have to 

have the perfect balance of 

love and compassion, along 

with a level of high expectations 

and respect for each 

individual.” 

Phillips and the youth 

have group sessions twice a 

week. She also meets individually 

with youth to discuss 

their grades as well as any of 

their concerns or needs. She 

also makes a point to check in 

on a daily basis, whether by 

calling them before school, 

greeting them when they get 

off the buses, or attending 

their athletic events. This extra 

effort has not gone unnoticed 

by the youth. 

“When she was a teacher, 

I struggled in her class 

and she really helped me,” 

said Andrew, a Boys Ranch 

resident for two years. “Now 

that she is our unit manager, 

it just seems to work. She is 

friendly and kind and she is 

able to keep things in order. 

Every morning, she calls our 

homeparents to check on us 

and see how we’re doing. She 

always talks to us and asks us 

how we are feeling.” 

Phillips said the most enjoyable 

part of being a unit 

manager is seeing the youth 

every day and having the opportunity 

to connect with 

them and be there for them. 

“Since I made the transition 

from teaching in the 

charter school to unit manager, 

it has opened my eyes 

to so many other ways I can 

directly be of service to these 

boys,” she said. “I don’t look 

at this as being a job because 

it is something I truly enjoy 

doing. I see it more as a 

ministry because we shape 

the lives of these young individuals 

to help them become 

responsible and successful 

adults one day.”

Fulfilling God’s mission 

with open arms 

East family opens their home and hearts to foster children 

inding your path to fulfill God’s mission is an individual, 

distinct journey. For Kevin and Stephanie East, they 

found their unmistakable path within their own home. 

FThey opened their door and their hearts to foster parenting and, 

in the process, have taught important lessons to their family 

while providing a safe haven for children in need. 

As you ring the doorbell to the East home, you can hear the 

excited giggles and sound of little footsteps on the other side of 

the door. The East children greet you warmly and happily before 

retreating to their rooms to play together. Although two of these 

children look different from the other members of the family, it 

is clearly evident that they belong and are an essential component 

of this joyful family dynamic. 

Back in 2009, Kevin and Stephanie began exploring the 

idea of fostering children after talking with their friends Ross 

and Stacy Conner who are MCH foster parents. Stephanie was 

ready to jump in head first but Kevin was a little reluctant at 

first. The couple had three biological children, the youngest of

whom was about to turn just one year old. He decided he wanted 

to do some research by talking to different children’s groups 

in the area before they signed on. After extensive research, some 

discussions with the Conners and a lot of prayers, the Easts 

decided to become licensed foster parents through Methodist 

Children’s Home. 

“It was the Lord who changed his heart about fostering,” 

Stephanie said. “Now he is very passionate about it.” 

In April 2010, they met with Traci Wagner, Eastern region 

administrator at MCH, in the Tyler Outreach Office to begin 

the process. The East family said they chose MCH because of 

its willingness to work with families to help them through the 

licensing process. The Easts participated in a series of training 

courses, including some online training. They also obtained 

CPR, First Aid and Emergency Behavior Intervention certifications. 

All foster families must also complete a series of background 

checks and home inspections. 

A few months after completing the process, the East family 

received their first foster child. She stayed with the family for 

eight months before she was placed in another home and eventually 

adopted with her two brothers. They have fostered five 

children since 2010, adopting two of these children, Hannah in 

November 2012 and Levi in December 2012. The East family 

is now a happy family of seven consisting of parents Kevin and 

Stephanie, and their children Walker (age 7), Miller (5), Maddry 

(4), Levi (3), and Hannah (2). The family is still licensed and 

plans to provide respite care for children in need. 

Although fostering has its challenges and saying goodbye 

to children can be tough, the Easts said fostering has made their 

family stronger. Stephanie said her children now understand 

the realities that some other families may face. 

“I love knowing that we are teaching our children compassion 

in a tangible way. I love that aspect of fostering for our 

family,” she said. 

“Fostering doesn’t get in the way of parenting our biological 

kids, it helps the parenting of our biological kids,” Kevin 

said. “It exposes selfishness in them. It allows us to teach them 

in a new and different way how to share. It gives them a vision 

for God’s mission and what that looks like. It helps us in a very 

physical and visible way to describe the love God has for His 

children as we all are adopted sons and daughters.” 

The Easts have been instrumental in encouraging around 

10 families to become foster parents in the Tyler area. Currently, 

the Tyler office has 25 foster homes, but hopes to exceed 30 

homes this year. The need is definitely great to find homes to 

welcome these children in need. 

“Kevin and Stephanie have developed friendships with other 

families within our agency and strive to support everyone in 

their circle of influence,” Wagner said. “They pray for the children 

we serve in our various ministries and they pray for our 

staff and agency.” 

Foster children typically stay in a foster home for 3-12 

months. Every case is different and individual factors are taken 

into consideration. Wagner said the highest priority is to provide 

children with foster parents who are able to meet the needs 

of the children, including social, physical, spiritual, emotional 

and educational needs, and then get them back to their parents 

when it is in their best interests. She said they want family reunification 

when it is possible. 

“We want our foster parents to invest in the ‘whole child’ – 

many times that means, in addition to the basic needs, building 

a child’s self esteem and uncovering their God-given talents and 

abilities,” Wagner said. “To be a foster parent and do it well, you 

must be willing to work as a part of the team on a child’s behalf. 

Foster parents must be able to love and care for children as if they 

were born into their family and they must be able to let them go. 

That is a tall order and that is why it must be a ministry.” 

Wagner said the Easts have also contributed to the ministry 

through their prayers, by serving as advocates for children, 

and partnering with those who work in the child welfare system. 

Stephanie has become an ally to potential foster parents working 

alongside them as they go through training. Wagner said Kevin 

is passionate about the role of the husband and father in families

and is an encourager to families in their walk of faith and fostering. 

Kevin, who has been in ministry for over 20 years, also often 

writes about topics pertaining to fostering and adoption in his 

blog at www.followingtolead.com. 

Wagner said the Easts have also extended grace and love 

to the birth families of the children they have fostered and 

know the value of a birth family regardless of the outcome of 

the case. The couple makes efforts to teach Hannah and Levi 

about their birth families and how they came to be a part of 

their family. 

Stephanie said with the need for foster parents being so 

great in the area, she loves knowing that they have found a way 

to help the community and families. 

“These kids do not have a voice. I love knowing that this is 

an opportunity for us to give them a voice, no matter how long 

we have them,” she said. 

Kevin added, “God is a missional God and therefore we as 

believers are missional people. Fostering provides a great opportunity 

for families to join in God’s redemptive work by opening 

their home.”

ABILENE 

Sisters Marci and Jessi recently left their MCH foster 

home to return to their mother, Mary Ann. Foster parents 

Joe and Janna Ledbetter developed positive relationships 

with the girls, and they were not sure how 

they were going to handle no longer being involved in 

their daily lives. Since Marci and Jessi returned home, 

their mother has helped the girls maintain their relationship 

with the Ledbetters. They joined the church 

the Ledbetters attend, and Mary Ann calls them to ask 

for advice on ways to handle situations. She and the 

girls invite the Ledbetters to attend their activities and 

they visit on the phone. While the girls lived with the 

Ledbetters, their mother devoted her attention to providing 

a more positive home environment for her daughters. 

The girls are thriving at home, and Mary Ann is 

now able to better provide for their daily needs. 

DALLAS 

Shanna and Dominique were extremely behind in school 

when they were placed in MCH foster care. The girls were 

initially aggressive toward their foster parents and had 

to be moved to separate homes within a few weeks of 

placement, which helped both girls. After a few months, 

the girls were moved to the Don and Nancy English foster 

home so they could be together. The Englishes and MCH 

staff members worked with the girls’ schools to provide 

the support they needed. The Englishes have enrolled the 

girls in a special academic program to help them catch 

up, and both girls are now reading at their grade level. 

The girls read a book to their mother for the first time 

during a phone visit. 

 

 

WACO 

The Waco Grandparents as Parents Program (GAPP), in 

collaboration with the Heart of Texas Area Agency on 

Aging, provided new school clothing for 50 grandchildren. 

Through this partnership, each grandchild received a $100 

gift voucher donated by Burlington Coat Factory. The children 

used the vouchers to purchase their own school clothing. 

GAPP families were very grateful for the vouchers and 

pleased to have the opportunity to take their grandchildren 

shopping for back-to-school clothes without worrying 

about the cost. Additionally, GAPP also received a monetary 

donation from Care Improvement Plus to purchase 

school supplies for MCH grandparent families. 

SAN ANTONIO 

Michael was placed in foster care by his mother when 

she was recovering from an operation to remove a brain 

tumor. She was homeless and had no other options for 

her son. While in care Michael attended school, made 

excellent grades and was very helpful to his foster parents. 

MCH caseworker Loraynne Rivera worked with 

Michael's mother and her aunt toward family reunification. 

Michael's mother had agreed to release him to her 

aunt. Loraynne and Jessica Butters, San Antonio director, 

met with the aunt in her home and provided her with resources 

within the community to help her meet Michael's 

needs. When the family was ready for Michael to come 

home, he was welcomed with a homecoming party. He 

was very excited to have his own room and a lot of new 

toys. MCH helped the aunt enroll Michael in school and 

continues to provide support to the family.

have been a difficult time for 

these two turned out to be an 

exciting celebration. 

Thanks to the kindness 

of benefactors, Alexis 

and Kaitlyn had a memorable 

Christmas. The two have 

been surprised by the generosity 

they have received at 

MCH, and Sheila Kendricks, 

Alexis’s unit manager, said 

it took him some time to become 

accustomed to it. 

“Alexis is amazed every 

time he needs something, and 

we say we will get it for him. 

He used to ask if he would 

have to pay us back, but now 

he is just grateful,” Kendricks 

said. “He had a big smile on 

his face during the Christmas 

activities. He was excited 

when opening his gifts and 

ready to enjoy his presents.” 

Kaitlyn had a similar experience 

during Christmas at 

her home unit. As one of the 

youngest residents, her wish 

list consisted of smaller, less 

expensive presents which 

meant she ended up with the 

most presents under the tree. 

Sharon Francis, Kaitlyn’s 

unit manager, said they had 

to be sure to start and end 

the gift opening rotation with 

Kaitlyn. Alexis and Kaitlyn 

know these gifts came from 

caring friends who help 

youth like them. 

“I give thanks to the people 

who gave to us,” Alexis 

said. 

Kaitlyn added, “They’re 

very special because they donate 

money every year.” 

These two siblings have 

also shown their own generosity 

since becoming MCH 

residents. When they received 

their allowance, both went 

shopping to buy gifts for their 

younger siblings. Both have 

also learned to become more 

responsible by helping with 

chores in their home units. 

“Alexis is very helpful in 

the unit, always willing to do 

extra chores. He seems to get 

personal satisfaction out of 

helping others,” Kendrick said. 

During their time at 

MCH, Alexis and Kaitlyn 

have shown great improvement 

in their communication, 

respect for authority, 

and relationship with their 

mother. Francis said she enjoys 

working with the family 

and said their mother is very 

proud of their progress since 

they came to live at MCH. 

Alexis and Kaitlyn are doing 

well at MCH and working to 

improve their lives. 

“MCH is not just about 

having fun. It’s to help us 

get better. It’s for a reason,” 

Alexis said.

In today’s busy world, it is 

not surprising that many individuals, 

even those who are 

United Methodists, are not 

aware of the great work being 

accomplished by MCH. Staff 

members in the Development 

Department are available to 

create speaking events to help 

churches, classes and other 

groups learn more about 

MCH’s mission, programs 

and services. 

President Tim Brown and other 

staff members enjoy sharing 

about the ministry of MCH. 

In February, for example, 

MCH provided a 45-minute 

UMW program; a presentation 

during the Sunday school 

hour; a seminar on parenting 

best practices; an overview 

of services offered through 

MCH Special Events 

MCH’s 11 outreach offices; sermons 

that highlight aspects of 

the MCH ministry; and mission 

moments. 

Although MCH receives 

many requests to provide 

current residents as speakers, 

child care regulations 

make this difficult at times. 

However, current college students 

are often available to 

share their testimonies of the 

impact MCH has made on 

their lives.

The American Tax Payer Relief Act 

(ATRA) extended the charitable 

IRA rollover through Dec. 31, 2013. 

As in past years when this 

unique giving opportunity was 

available, an MCH benefactor 

can make a tax-deductible gift 

of up to $100,000 from their traditional 

IRA or Roth IRA. All approved 

IRA transfers will be used for the daily needs of our children – 

not administrative costs. In order to participate in this opportunity, a 

benefactor must be at least 70 ½ and ensure that the gift is initiated 

by the custodian of his/her IRA account.
