PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
Remember who you are
A dear friend of mine, who is very skilled and successful at working with traumatized children and
youth, frequently tells me that her work is not “rocket science.” She describes it as the “stuff your
grandmother knew and did instinctually.” However, she reluctantly admits that “rocket science” is
now proving that her work is effective and the reasons it is so powerful.
As a young man, I frequently heard my grandmother tell me as I left the house, “Remember who
you are!” She was telling me to make sure my decisions and actions were consistent with my family
values. If I messed up, it would not only reflect negatively on me, but it would have consequences
for my family as well. The charge I received from my grandmother was to behave in a way that
created a positive image of our family.

This issue of Sunshine highlights our six core values at Methodist Children’s Home. These values
are Christian principles, relationships, responsibility, service, growth and hope. Our core values
reflect what we believe about the power of positive relationships and the belief in our potential for
good, no matter how great the temptation of evil. We believe our core values have an extremely
powerful impact on our children as they are incorporated and practiced on a daily basis. As
employees of Methodist Children’s Home, we are expected to consistently reflect the core values in
our decisions, actions and relationships.
We cannot be successful in our work with at-risk children and youth unless we define our values,
model them in all we do, defend them against criticism, and hold ourselves accountable to them.
We cannot expect greatness or success from our children and youth unless we equip them with
the beliefs and values that “rocket science” is now proving are important and necessary for young
people to grow and mature successfully.
Aristotle said, “There are two kinds of learning: knowledge and virtues/capacities.” We can teach
the knowledge and share examples of that process. However, living out our core values creates
another learning process in and of itself – one that is unfortunately lacking in our society today.
I hope you will be inspired and encouraged as you read profiles of staff members and youth who
exemplify our core values in their lives. And, as my grandmother impressed upon me, teach your
children well, and hold them accountable to remember who they are.

BOYS RANCH FEATURE
Discovering his niche
Damion is developing confidence and leadership skills as a member of the lamb crew at the Boys Ranch.
Taking care of animals is part of daily life at the MCH Boys Ranch.
Residents who are interested in working with animals are assigned
to crews that feed and wash animals and clean their pens. While
this work may sound like just another chore, youth enjoy the time
they spend with their steer, hog, goat or lamb.
Damion came to the Boys Ranch without any knowledge of
livestock. He was a long way from home, and he lacked confidence
and an understanding of his interests and talents. By the end of his
first year, his outlook and attitude had changed.
Damion asked to be put on a work crew in May 2010. He was
assigned the responsibility of caring for lambs with a group of other
boys. He did so well that he was given the privilege of having
first choice in selecting his lamb the next year.
Bob McClory, a homeparent and work crew supervisor at the
Boys Ranch, said Damion chose the smallest and least desirable
lamb in the bunch. He said Damion stood firm in his decision and
felt he could work the best with the lamb he selected.
Months later, the physical appearance and health of Damion’s
lamb had improved dramatically. The attention and care he gave
his lamb paid off.
“One of my favorite things about living on the Ranch is being
able to take care of my lamb,” Damion said.
Because of his willingness to work and learn, and his attention
to detail, Damion is a likely candidate to move up on the work crew
next year.
“There’s a good chance he could be a leader of a crew,”
McClory said. “He takes care of what needs to be done, and he
jumps in and helps where he’s needed.”
Like working with animals at the Boys Ranch, MCH provides
a variety of opportunities for youth. Many of these extracurricular
activities prove to be a source of comfort, stability and encouragement
throughout the course of a youth’s time at the Home.
Damion found his niche in caring for animals.
“Damion’s behavior has improved a lot since he’s been at the
Boys Ranch,” said Ed Schmidt, a homeparent. “He’s very respectful
to the staff and his peers.”
Steve Kruse, Ag teacher at the University of Texas University
Charter School at MCH, leads youth through the process of caring
for their animals and showing them for judging competitions.
According to Kruse, youth develop a strong work ethic and life
skills by participating in the Ag program.
“Through the livestock program, youth not only learn important
lessons, but they gain confidence as well,” he said.
Since coming to the Boys Ranch, Damion
has developed an interest in the Ag program.
Staff members say Damion has experienced significant
growth as a member of the lamb crew.
McClory said Damion’s leadership abilities and confidence in
working with animals have grown tremendously since he joined
the lamb crew.
“I would like to see Damion advance to the showmanship
competition at livestock shows,” McClory said. “If he continues to
listen and learn, he has the ability to win the showmanship belt
buckle next year.”
Though Damion’s lamb did not place at the last livestock
show in January, his response toward the outcome attests to his
confidence, positive attitude and kind heart.
“I had so much fun,” Damion said. “I can’t wait to start working
with my lamb for next year’s shows.”

CORE VALUE: CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES
The Christian faith serves as the foundation
for the mission and core values at
Methodist Children’s Home.
To help youth develop an understanding
of God’s love and grow in their
faith, the religious education program
provides worship, discipleship activities,
camps and mission trips for youth.
In addition, staff members throughout
the ministry model principles of the
Christian faith to the youth they serve.
In recent years, MCH established
a partnership with the Perkins Youth
School of Theology (PYST) at Southern
Methodist University that enables
youth to pursue advanced study in the
Christian faith and theology.
“We offer this opportunity for
youth who want to gain a deeper understanding
of God, their own spiritual
journey and what it means to live as a
Christian,” said Kim Hammitt, director
of religious education.
The SMU program equips high
school students with skills for vocational
discernment and critical theological reflection
about their faith and society.
Participants attend a three-week summer
academy, contribute to community
service projects, and maintain a relationship
with a mentor.
In recent years, the summer academy
has taken place at a camp near
Palestine in East Texas. This environment
provides a relaxed atmosphere
where youth develop a sense of community
through team-building exercises.
Josh and Simona, residents on the
Waco campus, have been involved in
PYST for two years. Although it is an
intensive academic program taught by
seminary professors, they believe the
work is worth the effort.

closer after attending the academy,”
Simona said. “The professors challenged
me so much and made me question
what I believe and why I believe it.”
Simona admits that making the
transition to the academy was difficult.
“We were put on a ‘technology fast’
at first, and it was hard to adjust to,”
she said. “We were encouraged to spend
time with one another instead of staying
on our cell phones or watching television.
In the process, we learned a lot and
grew closer together.”
While the youth bonded as a family,
they also studied the Bible and read
lengthy passages of Scripture at night.
“It was a lot like studying theology
in college, and the professors really
helped us learn,” Simona said.
Josh and Simona agree the experience
with PYST impacted their lives.
“It caused me to explore my faith,
and it challenged me,” Josh said. “I
have a deeper understanding of what
it means to be a Christian, and I have a
closer relationship with God.”
Each year, MCH residents who
participate in the program share their
insights with their peers as a way to
generate interest in the PYST. Josh understands
the important role he and
Simona play in helping other youth
learn about the program.
“A former resident told us that the
effort we invest in the program will determine
what we get out of it,” Josh
said. “It’s a lot of work, but we continue
to send that same message to others.”
As Josh and Simona live out the
principles of the Christian faith, they are
shining examples of the way MCH youth
fulfill this core value in their lives. They
are confident they will draw from the
lessons they learned and the values they
developed at the Home as they grow in
their relationship with God.
“I don’t know what God has
planned for me,” Josh said, “but I’m
willing to go where He leads me.”

CORE VALUE: RELATIONSHIPS
Family pictures and scrapbooks of
memories line the bookshelves, and
art projects and school reports hang
proudly on the refrigerator. While this
sounds like a typical family home, it
also describes an MCH foster home.
Foster parents are special people.
They open their hearts and homes to
children and want the best for them.
“One of the best things for children
is to know and be loved by their
parent,” said Melissa Opheim, vice
president for community services. “Our
foster parents understand the built-in
need for a connection to a child’s biological
parent.”
Foster parents know the challenges
biological parents face and find themselves
in a situation to help children by
providing a loving home and the reassuring
connection to their parents.
“It’s important for foster families
to have regular contact with the birth
parents to share information, discuss
the child’s progress, and celebrate special
experiences,” Opheim said.
Opheim said that foster families
are creative in exploring ways to nurture
the connection between children
and their birth parents. Foster families
through MCH have regular contact with
most birth parents to help keep them
informed and involved in the decisions
that affect their children. Every effort is
made to help birth parents take part in
special occasions with their children, including
birthdays and other milestones,
holidays, and school and church events.
Foster parents often create “lifebooks”
that document special experiences,
like a child’s first steps, first loose
tooth or first date. One foster mom refers
to the life-book as “documentation
of the child’s journey at her home until
he can go back home to mom.”
Brooke Rasco, a caseworker in
Waco, said one of her foster families
makes an effort to place photos of all
their foster children’s biological parents
on the mantel.
“Each night, the foster family gives
the children an opportunity to look
at their parents’ photo and talk about
them,” she said. “This enables the children
to have a constant visual of their
birth parent.”
Children placed in foster care come
from all backgrounds, and the biological
parent must work to overcome the
issues that led to the child’s placement
with MCH. These include joblessness,
incarceration, homelessness, court restrictions,
active addictions, or safety issues
in their current living situation for
the children. Sometimes a placement
comes from a young parent who needs
time to learn parenting skills.
“Many times birth parents feel isolated
and angry at the circumstances
that brought them to this point in their
lives,” Opheim said. “Foster parents
can play a role in helping to ease that
anger and frustration and speed everyone
along to a healthier tomorrow
through the care and attention they
give to the child and to the child’s connection
to loved ones.”
Though each situation is different,
there is one constant – relationships
are the foundation of any family dynamic.
Exemplifying the Home’s core
value of relationships, MCH outreach
offices and foster families are committed
to keeping families connected.

CORE VALUE: RESPONSIBILITY
Making final decisions about admissions
applications to MCH is a daunting
responsibility. Although criteria guide
the admissions process, the individual
needs of every applicant are carefully
evaluated to determine the best placement
for the youth.
“While we cannot accept everyone
who applies for admission, we feel passionately
about what we do and advocate
for every youth we feel needs to be
at MCH,” said Catie Capp-Hays, director
of admissions.
Families can learn about programs
and services by calling MCH directly or
through referrals. MCH asks relatives,
friends, ministers, teachers and other
sources to tell families about MCH or
contact the Home directly when they become
aware of a child who needs help.
“We believe there is a shared responsibility
in serving youth,” said Moe
Dozier, vice president for residential
services. “If people will take the responsibility
to let us know about children we
can potentially help, we’ll do our part to
try to help them. Unfortunately, many
families are unaware of our services.
They need someone to tell them about
Methodist Children’s Home.”
The typical admissions process can
take several weeks, and MCH relies on
families to maintain communication
with the admissions staff and complete
all paperwork in a timely manner. In
addition, MCH can provide emergency
placement on a case-by-case basis.
When a family calls the admissions
office, a staff member conducts a
brief screening by telephone to determine
if the child’s needs can potentially
be met by MCH. If so, an admissions

help families who seek assistance.
staff member conducts a full inquiry
by phone or sends the family an application.
After the required information
and paperwork are gathered, staff
members review the records to determine
if the child can benefit from the
Home’s services. A family interview
and campus tour are then scheduled.
The child’s application is presented
to the Intake Screening Committee, a
group of child care administrators and
staff members that meets weekly to discuss
current applications.
Capp-Hays said the committee
considers many factors to determine if
MCH can effectively meet the needs of a
child. While some issues are clear, others
require much discussion. The Intake
Screening Committee works closely together
and weighs all options to make
the best decision for every child.
“Our admissions team is truly invested
in the well-being of each child,”
Capp-Hays said. “We want what’s in
the best interests of youth, and we don’t
want to short-change them.”
Capp-Hays said an important factor
in determining placement is the potential
impact on current residents and
the dynamics in individual home units.
“We have vulnerable youth here,
and it’s essential that we consider the
needs of our current residents in addition
to potential residents,” she said.
“We have to remember that we’re looking
at the bigger picture when we place
children in our residential program.”
If the Intake Screening Committee
approves the final application, an assessment
is written about the youth and the
admissions team determines the best
home unit for the child.
“Placement is important because we
don’t want to set up our youth for failure,”
Capp-Hays said. “We want them to
be in homes where they can flourish.”
The MCH admissions office handles
applications and placement of
youth on the Waco campus and Boys
Ranch. Youth who are potential candidates
for the Home’s residential program
in Waxahachie go through the
process on that campus.
Capp-Hays emphasized that the
Home makes every effort to help all
families who seek assistance.
“We want to make sure we serve
families who call for guidance in some
way,” she said. “If we’re not able to provide
services for them, we’ll refer them
to another agency that could possibly
assist them in their situation. We want
to help all families find the support and
services they need for their children.”

CORE VALUE: SERVICE
Service is more than just an action.
Community service at MCH is learning
to look beyond oneself to fulfill the
needs of others, and it is an important
part of the child care program at MCH.
Youth on the Waco, Boys Ranch
and Waxahachie campuses enjoy opportunities
to share their time and talents
to meet the needs of others. Community
service is performed on Saturdays during
the school year and throughout the
week in the summer. Staff and youth
in each home unit are responsible for
identifying service opportunities.
Belinda Gutierrez, a youth care
counselor in Waxahachie, believes in the
power of community service.
“Our youth learn so much from serving
others,” Gutierrez said. “They begin
to see the bigger picture – that other
people have situations in their lives that
aren’t perfect either.”
Gutierrez’s home unit volunteers
during respite night at the Cowboy
Church of Ellis County the first Friday of
each month. This evening is set aside by
the church for parents of children with
special needs. The children come to the
church to have a fun night with friends
while the parents spend time together.
The church is equipped to provide
for special needs children. Another program
within the church, Reins of Life,
gives the children a different option for
having fun. Reins of Life provides an
opportunity for children to ride gentlenatured
horses with a lead and side
support. This enables the child to build
muscle and gain coordination skills.

gained a different outlook on life through
this opportunity.
“I was nervous at first because I
thought the kids were going to be different
than me,” he said. “Once we went, I
realized they’re not that different, and
I really like to work with kids who have
special needs.”
Gutierrez said that as the youth begin
to relate to the children, they learn
how to get along with all ages of people
and develop “patience, empathy, trust
and charity.”
Community service projects can
also help youth, like Tyler, develop a
sense of purpose for their lives.
“The Cowboy Church is my favorite
place to do community service,” Tyler
said. “Because of this, I want to work
with special needs kids as a career.”
In addition to their service at
the church, each Saturday morning
Gutierrez’s home unit meets to discuss
how they can continue to serve others
in the coming week.
“I like to get the boys’ input on
what they want to do,” Gutierrez said.
“We will start a community service
project at a local nursing home soon.”
Gutierrez’s home unit decided as a
team to serve the elderly by creating a
monthly newsletter to share with some
of the residents. Each of the boys in the
home unit is responsible for a section of
the newsletter.
“The key to getting youth involved
in community service is finding something
that empowers them,” Gutierrez
said. “We let them take the reins.”
MCH youth on the Waco, Boys Ranch and Waxahachie campuses volunteer to meet a variety
of needs in their communities. Staff and youth in each home unit are responsible for
identifying needs and partnering with organizations, agencies, businesses and churches.

CORE VALUE: GROWTH
Growth is something MCH expects from
all youth. While each story is different,
staff members consider it a great achievement
in every case. Denzel, a resident at
the Boys Ranch, is one example.
Denzel came to the Boys Ranch in
July 2009. He was ordered by juvenile
court to spend one year at MCH, and his
outlook on his time at the Home was just
that, time served.
“Denzel was withdrawn when he
came to the Boys Ranch,” said Larry
Slonaker, one of Denzel’s homeparents.
“He acted out, but now he has accepted
the program and what it has to offer.”
When he arrived, Denzel made up
his mind that he was not going to participate
in anything the Home made available
to him. He said he planned to sit in
his room, only to leave when he attended
school. However, Denzel became interested
in playing football.
“Playing football is a privilege at
MCH,” Denzel said. “And football started
to become a passion of mine, so I decided
to work with the program at the Boys
Ranch instead of against it.”
Last year, Denzel played on the
Home’s state champion flag football
team, which competed in a charter school
league. This year, MCH moved to a new
league and made the transition to sixman
tackle football, which gave Denzel
an opportunity to display his talents at
a higher level of competition. Denzel
was named second-team all-state by the
Texas Christian Athletic League (TCAL),
and he was selected to play in the TCAL
all-star game in December.
Larry and his wife, Jeanean, believe
Denzel became interested in participating
in other activities at the Boys Ranch
as he experienced joy and success in
playing football.
Denzel is developing confidence and leadership skills through the opportunities and
relationships he is experiencing as a resident at the Boys Ranch.
“Playing football has helped Denzel
with his confidence,” Larry said. “He has
taken on more of a leadership role in the
home unit and with his peers. He actively
participates in the home unit meetings
and tries to encourage others.”
Jeanean describes Denzel as an attentive
listener and intelligent young
man. She said Denzel was recently recommended
to be the peer mediator for
their home unit. Residents selected as
peer mediators will go through intensive
training to learn how to help their peers
with conflict resolution.
“Denzel is naturally a peer mediator,”
Jeanean said. “He doesn’t do it for
the recognition – he’s usually behind the
scenes. He tries to help his peers work
through whatever is going on.”
Denzel admits he is not perfect and
he slips up from time to time, but he
likes to be supportive and help his peers
when he can.
“They definitely have a peer they
can talk to if they want to,” Denzel said.
“I’m that person for them.”
Jeanean said the confidence Denzel
is gaining at the Boys Ranch is giving
him hope for his future. She said he talks
about possible careers and wants to attend
college on a scholarship.
“I would like to be a family guidance
counselor,” Denzel said. “If I wouldn’t
have come to the Home, I don’t think I
would be in school or have hope for attending
college. The Home has helped me
to grow, and it has provided so many opportunities
for me.”
The Slonakers and other Boys Ranch
staff continually encourage Denzel to
work hard to achieve his goals. Staff
members believe the social work field
would be a good fit for Denzel.
“Most teenagers struggle when they
start thinking about their future plans,”
Jeanean said. “Denzel is on his way to
finding his place in this world.”

CORE VALUE: HOPE
At age 16, Malcolm had been living
without parents for two years in a house
without electricity or gas. He and his
three sisters put forth their best effort to
keep the utilities on by paying bills with
the money they received from Social
Security after their father’s death. They
tried to maintain some sense of normalcy
by continuing to attend school and
doing chores around their house as best
they could.
LaSonia King, a unit manager at the
MCH Boys Ranch, first met Malcolm and
his sisters through Waco ISD. King tried
to stay by his side whenever he needed a
helping hand.
“My church, St. John’s Missionary
Baptist, took meals over to their house,”
King said. “Malcolm and his sisters
were making their best effort to survive
and stay in the house their father had
purchased for them.”
Against all their efforts, Malcolm
and his sisters were suspended from
school, due to not having a legal guardian,
and their house was claimed by the
city. They were left homeless.
“Everything was a challenge,”
Malcolm said. “I missed 10th grade because
I was just trying to survive.”
After being removed from school, a
friend of Malcolm’s sister told her about
Methodist Children’s Home. Malcolm
and his younger sister interviewed with
the admissions staff.
“I didn’t want to come to the
Home,” Malcolm said, “but my sister
convinced me that it was the best place
for us.”
Malcolm and his sister came to
MCH in 2009. Though he was no longer
on the streets, Malcolm faced a whole
new set of challenges.
“They had rules I had to follow, and
Malcolm has overcome significant obstacles to discover hope for his life. A 2010
graduate of MCH, he is attending Hill College and plans to earn a theology degree.
I was used to doing what I wanted to
do,” he said. “But I knew it was better for
me to be at MCH than anywhere else, so
I conformed to my new life.”
Malcolm was not without help
through the tough times. He gives credit
to King and his home unit’s youth care
counselor, Bridgette Johnson, for always
being there when he needed them.
During his 15-month-stay on the
Waco campus, Malcolm managed to
catch up on all the coursework he missed
during his sophomore year of high
school, and he graduated a semester
earlier than planned. He attended the
University of Texas University Charter
School on the MCH campus.
With things looking up for Malcolm,
the question was not if he was planning
to attend college, but where he would

services coordinator assigned to
Malcolm during his senior year, helped
Malcolm search for the right college.
“Malcolm is self-motivated,”
Alexander said. “He has been on-board
with the college process since the beginning.
I would follow up with him, only to
find out he was one step ahead of me.”
Alexander stayed close to Malcolm
throughout the process, helping him
along the way.
“I’m proud of Malcolm,” Alexander
said. “He knows what he wants – a better
life for him and his family – and he’s
on the path to getting it.”
Malcolm started his first semester
of college in January. He attends Hill
College and has chosen a theology major.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today if
it weren’t for the Home,” Malcolm said.
“I would probably still be on the streets,
having never graduated from high
school.”

Sharing the vision:
An interview with
MCH President Tim Brown
In part two of this series, Tim Brown discusses how faith
plays a role in his career, the experiences that drive him, and
the challenges of being a husband, father and president of
Methodist Children’s Home.
During the first message you
gave as president at MCH
during a Sunday service on
the Waco campus, you mentioned
a quote by Marianne
Williamson from her book,
“Return to Love.” Part of
the quote reads, “We ask
ourselves, ‘Who am I to be
brilliant, gorgeous, talented,
fabulous? Actually, who
are you not to be? You are a
child of God.” Why did you
choose that quote?
Many of our kids are here purely
due to painful circumstances
in their lives. Bad things happen
– death, abuse, neglect,
school issues, divorce, anger,
illnesses – that lead children to
MCH. In many cases, it’s not
necessarily something they did
or something they could have
prevented, things just happen.
There’s a saying that we
tend to become what the most
important person in our life
thinks we’ll become. As caring
adults and staff members, if we
help children believe they have
worth and value and will do
great things in life, they typically
fulfill that vision and do
great things. I’ve had the blessing
many times to hear from
former residents years later,
who thanked me and other
staff members for believing
in them. It makes a difference
in the lives of our youth when
they know we support them
and believe in their potential.
Are there any past experiences
in this profession that
keep you motivated?
I’m convinced there is always
hope when I see the resilience
our children have in overcoming
the difficult or traumatic
circumstances that bring them
to MCH. There is always potential
for children to successfully
turn their lives around.
They can accomplish things
they never dreamed they could
do. I’m inspired to know that
MCH contributes to the success
of our youth. This keeps
me motivated to maintain our
good work and find even better
ways to serve children.
Can you share any specific
experiences?
I’m frequently reminded of my
experience with four sisters who
were here several years ago.

and aunt. They struggled with
relationships because everyone
they ever loved had died. One of
the girls even said she thought
they died because she loved
them.
Closeness, love and trust
were challenges for them. Even
though none of their family
attended college, they came to
MCH, stuck with our program
and did well in school. They’re
all doing great now – they attended
college, have good jobs,
and one is married with children.
They’re all healthy, confident
and successful people. The
girls remain in touch with each
other, and they have developed
their own extended families and
support systems.
There are those youth who
learn valuable lessons from living
at MCH, and there are those
youth who teach us important
lessons. There was another
young man who came to live at
the Home who was diagnosed

with a terminal disease. Most
people do not live past their
teens with this diagnosis. This
young man lived his short life
fully and completely. He lived
life to the fullest and as an example
to others. I’m inspired
by these courageous young
people and others like them.
How does your faith influence
your work at MCH?
I couldn’t do what I do without
my faith. I have to be able to
trust God to make something
good happen out of something
bad; to know that when
bad things happen they’re not
punishment or intentionally
inflicted pain in someone’s life.
God is a loving god and He
wants the best for us.
How do you think faith
plays a role in the lives
of MCH youth?
It’s hard sometimes for our
youth to trust God. Many times
we refer to God as our Father,
but fathers do not always love
their children, or at least may
not act as a father should act
toward his children. In other
cases, children may have a good
father, but he died or divorced.
Thus, children begin to think
that if God is anything like their
earthly father, they don’t want
anything to do with Him.
I encourage youth to come
to peace with their past and
disappointments by forgiving
those who hurt or disappointed
them. I encourage them to
think about a loving God, who
cares so much about them
that He sent His own Son to
heal them, forgive them, love
them and give them every opportunity
to love others. I want
them to have that as their image
of God – one who loves
them enough to stick with
them, even when they are not
too loveable at times.
You have mentioned that
you want to be more like
Barnabas from the Bible.
Can you tell me a little
about that?
Barnabas was an incredible
encourager. I grew up around
people who placed value on

remaining quiet, serving others
and taking little credit for
the things they did. Thus, I’ve
always admired and gravitated
toward people who were encouragers.
My joy comes in
seeing others find and experience
joy.
I’m reminded of a story in
2 Kings 7:3-16. Four beggars are
sitting at a gate outside a city
under siege. The city has run
out of food and water. The enemy
is camped some distance
away waiting for the city to give
up. One of the beggars speaks
up and says, “We have to do
something. If we sit here, we’re
going to die. If we go inside the
gates to the city, we’ll surely
die. But if we go out to the enemy,
maybe they’ll have mercy
on us and give us food and water
and we’ll live.” They found
the courage and strength to
face the enemy, and they were
rewarded for their effort.
Before the beggars arrived,
the Lord caused the enemy to
hear the sound of many horses
and they fled in fear, leaving
behind treasure, food, clothing
and supplies. In the midst
of their joy and good fortune,
one of the beggars said, “This
is a day of good fortune and we
must not keep it for ourselves,
we must share it with others.”
They eventually returned to
tell the king, and the city under
siege was saved because of the
beggars’ courage, risk and generous
spirits.
When good things happen,
we are called to share them with
others. God provides those opportunities
not just for us, but
for others through us. I identify
with Barnabas because he was
that kind of person. He wasn’t
satisfied just experiencing the
good things in his life. He wanted
to share them with others.
What are the challenges of
being a president at a children’s
home and a husband
and father?
Time management is the greatest
challenge. I have to take it
one day at a time and schedule
my time accordingly. I focus on
trying to remain flexible and
available. I enjoy and seek solitude
at times, but my presence,
visibility and involvement in
my family’s life and activities
and MCH are competing priorities
at times.
I try every day to tell my
wife and kids that I love them.
I try to encourage our staff
and youth, and tell them how
much I appreciate the work
they do and the support they
provide each other and MCH.
It’s something I have to be
intentional about because it’s
not an easy thing to do. When
I encounter people who are
good at encouraging others, I
try to incorporate those skills
in what I do. I’ve learned that
when I make a mistake, I need
to quickly and humbly ask for
forgiveness and move on, and
then strive to work on learning
from my mistakes and do better
next time.

With 12 outreach offices across Texas and New Mexico, it is sometimes difficult to keep up with all of the good things happening
throughout this area of ministry at Methodist Children’s Home. Community services offices provide case management
to children and families in an effort to strengthen the family unit. Below are examples of ways Methodist Children’s
Home offers hope through foster care, family preservation services and other community services. The names of children
were changed to protect their privacy.
EL PASO
When Stephen was born prematurely,
he tested positive for amphetamines.
He was placed in MCH foster care two
weeks after his birth. He received
Early Child Intervention to address
developmental delays. While in foster
care, Stephen has improved his
developmental growth. Today, he is a
healthy one-year-old.

ALBUQUERQUE
Stephanie is a single mother of two
children. They came to New Mexico
after surviving Hurricane Katrina.
Since then, Stephanie has survived a
near fatal car accident, loss of employment
and potential homelessness.
With the support of MCH, she has been
able to remain housed and secure a
better job to care for her children and
purchase a car. Stephanie’s success
• is a credit to her determination and
dedication as a parent.

Isabelle, 4, lives with her grandmother,
who found out she had a grandchild
when CPS knocked on her door with
news that Isabelle needed a place to
live. So began the adventure of the
newly united grandmother and granddaughter.
Isabelle wanted a princess
dress for Christmas, but her grandmother
did not have money to buy one.
MCH provided the dress as a Christmas
gift. Several days later MCH staff
stopped by for an unannounced visit.
They were greeted at the door by an
excited Isabelle, who was wearing her
princess dress. This seemingly small
gift changed the heart of a child.

Jarrod entered foster care when he
was nine months old while his mother
attended Job Corps. She was required
to live on campus and was not able to
keep Jarrod with her. He has thrived
in his foster home and has grown into
an active and healthy two-year-old.
Jarrod’s mother graduated from Job
Corps and plans to attend college.
She has become independent, and she
is able to provide a safe and healthy
environment for Jarrod.

HOUSTON
Melissa was placed in foster care
by her birth mother through the
Department of Family and Protective
Services. Her mother had a history
of substance abuse and unstable
housing. During admission, Melissa
was very shy and withdrawn, and she
lacked verbal skills. During Melissa’s
time in foster care, she learned to
communicate with her caregiver and
socialize with children her own age.
She is very active and has a smile
that out-shines anyone. Melissa was
released from care by DFPS and
united with her grandparents, who
plan to adopt her.
