Digital Advanced Mobile Phone Service - is a 2G mobile phone system used throughout the<br />

Americas but particularly in the United States and Canada. It is considered end-of-life, and<br />

existing networks are in the process of being replaced by GSM/GPRS and CDMA2000<br />

technologies.<br />

General Packet Radio Service - is a packet-based wireless communication service that has<br />

data rates from 56 Kilobits per second (Kbps) up to 114 Kbps and a continuous connection to<br />

the Internet for mobile phone and computer users.<br />

Global System for Mobile communication - is a 2G digital mobile telephone system that is<br />

widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM digitises and compresses data, then<br />

sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It<br />

operates at either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band.<br />

Machine-to-Machine – is a technology that supports wired or wireless communication<br />

between machines. M2M is used in telemetry, data collection, remote control, robotics, remote<br />

monitoring, road traffic control, security systems, logistic services, and telemedicine.<br />

Multimedia Messaging Service - is a communications technology developed by 3GPP (Third<br />

Generation Partnership Project) that allows users to exchange multimedia communications<br />

between capable mobile phones and other devices.<br />

Mobile Network Operator - is a telephone company that owns a radio spectrum licence and<br />

its own physical infrastructure, and provides services for mobile phone subscribers.<br />

Mobile Virtual Network Enabler – provides services to <strong>MVNO</strong>s including network<br />

provisioning, administration and various operations such as billing and account handling. A<br />

MVNE does not have a direct relationship with the end-user (customer), they provide the<br />

services directly to the <strong>MVNO</strong>s.<br />

Mobile Virtual Network Operator - is a mobile operator that does not own its own spectrum<br />

and usually does not have its own network infrastructure. Instead, <strong>MVNO</strong>'s have business<br />

arrangements with traditional mobile network operators to buy minutes of use (MOU) for sale<br />

to their own customers.<br />

Office of the Telecommunications Authority – is the statutory body responsible for<br />

regulating the telecommunications industry in Hong Kong.<br />

Operations Support System - enable telecommunications companies to manage, monitor<br />

and control the telecommunications networks. Billing, customer care systems, directory<br />

services, network element and network management are all Operational Support Systems.<br />
