MEMBERS of the crew and
embarked forces of HMAS Tobruk
honed their humanitarian
aid and disaster relief
skills while undertaking
a test of multinational
interoperability
and triservice capability off New
Caledonia during Exercise Croix du
Sud from October 14-27.
The biennial exercise, led
by French Armed Forces New
Caledonia, involved the ADF,
Canada, New Zealand, Papua New
Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu, United
Kingdom, the United States, and
Japan as an observer nation.
ADF participation included
92 soldiers from Bravo Company,
1RAR, 17 staff officers, and Tobruk
with her crew of 266 and embarked
forces.
Revered for her participation in
the exercise, Tobruk provided the
backdrop for the opening ceremony
and then hosted the Croix du Sud
official reception.
Tobruk also hosted a VIP day
and provided cross-deck opportunities
for other participating nations.
Tobruk proved her force from the
sea, delivering amphibious capabili-
ties, embarking and disembarking
Australian and international forces
for beach landings and ship familiarisation,
conducting boarding
and force protection exercises, and
executing a non-combatant evacuation
operation.
CO HMAS Tobruk CMDR Tim
Watson said Exercise Croix du Sud
provided an excellent opportunity
for ADF personnel to operate with,
and learn from, Australia’s Pacific
partners, enhancing interoperability
and relationships.
“With a focus on humanitarian
aid and disaster relief from sea,
shore and air aspects, Exercise Croix
du Sud fostered a unity between the
nine participating nations,” CMDR
Watson said.
“It enabled them to identify their
strengths and weaknesses, ensuring
in the instance of conflict or instability
in the Pacific, the nations can
come together and respond effectively
as a united force.
“The ADF shares an excellent
relationship with our Pacific partners.
“Croix du Sud allowed us to
build on those relationships and
ensure ongoing interoperability and
cooperation.”
