Sweet Persimmon Cultivated in Suncheon

Persimmons are grown everywhere in Korea, but
Gyeongsangnam-do (the province where Changwonsi,
Gimhae-si, Jinju-si, and Sacheon-si are located) is
the largest producer of the fruit, with output totaling
60 percent of all the Korean persimmons.
Its brand name, Jinyeong Sweet Persimmon, is familiar
to every Korean. If compared to
Gyeongsangnam-do, the production of Suncheon-si
in Jeollanam-do (800 tons on average) is relatively
small. Nevertheless, the taste and output are not always
in direct proportion. The Suncheon area has
been cultivating sweet persimmon since 1910 and 80
percent of the fruit produced there boasts the prime
quality in every aspect - sweetness, juiciness, crispiness,
and storability. For this reason, almost everyone
who has tried a Suncheon sweet persimmon, especially
the natives of Jeollanam-do, can’t forget its taste.
Last year, the persimmon farms of Suncheon were
chosen as “model farms of top quality fruit” by the
Rural Development Administration (RDA), and the
cultivation of Suncheon sweet persimmon has been
enhanced with fertilization by bees and environmental
improvement. The changes were made in order to
increase the competitiveness of Korean farmers in
producing high quality fruit.

Suncheon Combination Union Joint Enterprise. Co.,
Ltd, which is a joint enterprise established in 2007 by
three cooperatives (Suncheon NH Agricultural
Cooperative, Suncheon Horticultural NH Agricultural
Cooperative, and Byeollyang NH Agricultural
Cooperative).
The company is the main producer in the Suncheon
area with total output reaching 25 percent (200 tons)
of all Suncheon sweet persimmons.
