Talking is one of those milestones that we look forward
to, like sitting up and the first steps, and when it doesn’t
come we may well think that it is an indicator of a deeper
issue. But are we really helping our children to speak?
Do we encourage them as much as we think we do?
The doctor was right. My sister didn’t have anything
to say because my mother was pre-empting her every
need. Why ask for a drink if it is already there? Why
speak if Mummy is speaking at me all the time?
In the early years talk is very important. In fact it is planned
for and reported on from when a child enters our Nursery
to when he or she leaves the Pre-Prep department at 7 years
of age. Speaking has to be built into everything we do in
Nursery; it is a vehicle through which children share their
curiosity, through speech they make connections with others,
articulate their needs and desires and express their feelings. It
is by asking questions that a child makes sense of the world
around him or her and extends their cognitive abilities.
One way in which we actively encourage talk is through
our conscious efforts to develop independence in all our
children. If mummy always hangs the coat on the peg the
child will never need to ask the question, “Where shall I
put my coat?” or tell us, “I can’t find my hook.” Necessity
ensures that even the most reluctant talker will soon break
their silence if their needs are observed but not always rushed
to be met. This gentle encouragement needs to be delivered
with the love and security that we provide so that the children
feel confident enough to take a risk and hear their voice.”
