<strong>Prof</strong> <strong>Carlos</strong> <strong>Scheinkestel</strong>, <strong>MB</strong> <strong>BS</strong>, <strong>FRACP</strong>, <strong>Dip</strong> <strong>DHM</strong>, <strong>FCICM</strong>,<br />

<strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> Director of <strong>the</strong> Department of Intensive Care & Hyperbaric Medicine at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital. He <strong>is</strong> a physician who has been pract<strong>is</strong>ing full time in<br />

intensive care since 1987 and was a Foundation member of <strong>the</strong> JFICM and<br />

now <strong>the</strong> CICM. He was <strong>the</strong> Chairman of <strong>the</strong> Victorian Branch and a member of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Board of Directors of <strong>the</strong> Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care<br />

Society (ANZICS) from 1998 to 2002. In 2000, he was appointed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Department of Human Services (Victoria) to <strong>the</strong> Min<strong>is</strong>terial Emergency and<br />

Critical Care Committee and in 2009 to <strong>the</strong> Intensive Care Adv<strong>is</strong>ory Committee.<br />

Currently he holds a number of roles in key Hospital Committees. He <strong>is</strong> a<br />

frequent reviewer for journals both national and international and has been an<br />

examiner for <strong>the</strong> Colleges of Physicians, Anaes<strong>the</strong>t<strong>is</strong>ts and Emergency<br />

Medicine. He has received a number of research grants, including an ANZCA<br />

Project grant and two NHMRC grants in which he <strong>is</strong> an associate investigator in<br />

one and a chief investigator in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. He has a number of publications, and<br />

has given many invited presentations, both overseas and within Australia. H<strong>is</strong><br />

major interests are varied and include haemofiltration, renal failure, nutrition in<br />

<strong>the</strong> critically ill and leadership.<br />

<strong>Prof</strong> DJ (Jamie) Cooper BM <strong>BS</strong>, <strong>FRACP</strong>, <strong>FCICM</strong>, MD, NHMRC Practitioner<br />

Fellow<br />

<strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> Monash University Director of <strong>the</strong> Australian and New Zealand Intensive<br />

Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC), and Critical Care Medicine, Deputy<br />

Director and Head of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Research at The Alfred Hospital<br />

Melbourne, and Chair of <strong>the</strong> Monash Partners Critical Care, Trauma and<br />

Perioperative Medicine Theme. He trained at medicine and intensive care in<br />

Adelaide and a research fellowship at University of Brit<strong>is</strong>h Columbia Canada.<br />

He <strong>is</strong> a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Practitioner<br />

Fellow, full <strong>Prof</strong>essor of Intensive Care Medicine at Monash University and<br />

Hon. <strong>Prof</strong>essorial Fellow at The George Institute, University of Sydney.<br />

He has publ<strong>is</strong>hed more than 160 journal papers including 7 in New England<br />

Journal of Medicine and Journal of <strong>the</strong> American Medical Association. He has<br />

been a Principal or co-investigator on peer reviewed research grants exceeding<br />

$42 million including 19 NHMRC grants. Research foci include random<strong>is</strong>ed<br />

clinical trials in traumatic brain injury, blood transfusion, seps<strong>is</strong>, acute lung<br />

injury, and resuscitation fluids.<br />

Dr Tim Leong, <strong>MB</strong> <strong>BS</strong> (Hons), <strong>FCICM</strong>, PG<strong>Dip</strong>Echo, DDU<br />

(Critical Care)<br />

<strong>is</strong> a Deputy Director of ICU and Head of Quality Improvement. H<strong>is</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

interests include IT applications in ICU, infection control, critical care<br />

echocardiography and ICU outreach. Current major projects include e-charting<br />

in ICU , expansion of <strong>the</strong> ICU clinical information system, redevelopment of <strong>the</strong><br />

hyperbaric facility, decreasing nosocomial infections in ICU and improving staff<br />

hand hygiene compliance.<br />

In 2012, he received h<strong>is</strong> <strong>Prof</strong>essional Certificate in Health Systems<br />

Management from Melbourne University.<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM)


Dr Jason McClure, <strong>MB</strong> ChB, MRCP (UK), FRCA (UK), <strong>FCICM</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong> Deputy Director, Intensive Care, Head of General ICU and clinical lead for<br />

ICU Burns.<br />

Jason has a strong interest in analgesia and sedation, respiratory failure,<br />

ventilation, HFOV and ECMO.<br />

Current projects include development of a telemedicine model for ICU, review<br />

and update of sedation practice and burns analgesia. He <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> course director<br />

for ALS and <strong>the</strong> HEaRT Course, and also teaches on o<strong>the</strong>r courses including<br />

ECMO, BASIC, Bronchoscopy, Nutrition & CRM.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r interests include simulation and <strong>the</strong> use of social media and modern<br />

technology in medicine.<br />

Dr Owen Roodenburg, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong> (hons) <strong>FRACP</strong> <strong>FCICM</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong> Deputy Director of Intensive Care and Head of Trauma ICU at The Alfred<br />

Hospital, Melbourne. He <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> Superv<strong>is</strong>or of Training for <strong>the</strong> College of<br />

Intensive Care Medicine at The Alfred, and <strong>is</strong> also responsible for Reg<strong>is</strong>trar<br />

recruitment. He <strong>is</strong> also an examiner for <strong>the</strong> CICM. Owen <strong>is</strong> interested in high<br />

quality medical education and training at all levels within and outside of The<br />

Alfred Intensive Care. Owen teaches on courses including Renal Replacement<br />

Therapy, Bronchoscopy, Trauma, EMST, ALS, Nutrition, CICM exam<br />

preparation, and Consultant Intensiv<strong>is</strong>t Transitioning.<br />

In 2011, he received h<strong>is</strong> <strong>Prof</strong>essional Certificate in Health Systems<br />

Management from Melbourne University.<br />

Dr Deirdre Murphy, <strong>MB</strong> BCh BAO, MRCPI, FCARCSI, <strong>FCICM</strong>,<br />

PG<strong>Dip</strong>ECho (UniMelb), DDU (Critical Care)<br />

<strong>is</strong> a Deputy Director, Intensive Care and Head of cardio-thoracic ICU at The<br />

Alfred Hospital with particular interest in echocardiography and cardiac<br />

intensive care especially mechanical circulatory support including ECMO and<br />

ventricular ass<strong>is</strong>t devices. Deirdre originally trained in Ireland with<br />

postgraduate training in general medicine and anaes<strong>the</strong>sia prior to embarking<br />

on her intensive care career in Australia in 1999. She has been an Intensiv<strong>is</strong>t<br />

at The Alfred since 2003. Deirdre has been involved in many of <strong>the</strong> ECMO<br />

retrievals with <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU team.<br />

Dr. Andrew Ross, MD <strong>BS</strong>, FANZCA, <strong>Dip</strong>. Health Med Law,<br />

<strong>is</strong> a career Obstetric Anaes<strong>the</strong>t<strong>is</strong>t who has combined h<strong>is</strong> anaes<strong>the</strong>tic practice<br />

with over 20 years continuous experience at The Alfred ICU. Previously Head<br />

of Anaes<strong>the</strong>sia at both <strong>the</strong> Royal Women's Hospital and latterly <strong>the</strong> Mercy<br />

Hospital for Women, he continues to combine ICU with h<strong>is</strong> subspecialty<br />

anaes<strong>the</strong>tic practice in both private and public spheres.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r interests include <strong>the</strong> law and medicine.<br />

A/<strong>Prof</strong>. David Tuxen, <strong>MB</strong> <strong>BS</strong>, <strong>FRACP</strong>, <strong>Dip</strong> <strong>DHM</strong>, MD, <strong>FCICM</strong>,<br />

<strong>is</strong> a Senior Intensiv<strong>is</strong>t and <strong>the</strong> immediate past Director of <strong>the</strong> Department of<br />

Intensive Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at <strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital. Th<strong>is</strong> ICU treats<br />

16-1800 patients PA and provides <strong>the</strong> hyperbaric, trauma, burns and ECMO<br />

services for <strong>the</strong> state, and a national heart and lung transplant service.<br />

He has performed 21 years continuous service on an ANZICS or Intensive<br />

Care Foundation executive. He <strong>is</strong> a past President of ANZICS and a past<br />

Chairman of <strong>the</strong> Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Foundation.<br />

He has been <strong>the</strong> RACP Superv<strong>is</strong>or of Intensive Care training and <strong>the</strong><br />

Chairman of <strong>the</strong> RACP Special<strong>is</strong>t Adv<strong>is</strong>ory Committee on Intensive Care.<br />

During 21 years service in <strong>the</strong> RAAF reserve, he was a Wing Commander<br />

and <strong>the</strong> RAAF consultant for Intensive Care Medicine.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> work and achievements has been recogn<strong>is</strong>ed by receiving ANZICS Medal,<br />

giving ANZICS Oration and being placed on <strong>the</strong> ANZICS Honour roll.<br />

He has been <strong>the</strong> convenor of all <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU Advanced mechanical<br />

Ventilation Conferences since its inception in 2007<br />

Expert<strong>is</strong>e and special interests include mechanical ventilation of asthma and<br />

ARDS, lung recruitment, independent lung ventilation, fungal infection in<br />

intensive care, intensive care ethics.<br />

Dr Steve Philpot, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong> (Hons), FANZCA, <strong>FCICM</strong>, PGCertCU<br />

Steve completed h<strong>is</strong> Anaes<strong>the</strong>tic Fellowship in Western Australia, and h<strong>is</strong><br />

Intensive Care fellowship in Victoria. He also worked for several years in <strong>the</strong><br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Territory, and <strong>is</strong> now a full time special<strong>is</strong>t in <strong>the</strong> ICU at <strong>the</strong> Alfred<br />

Hospital in Melbourne. He <strong>is</strong> a Hospital Medical Director for organ and t<strong>is</strong>sue<br />

donation, and a member of <strong>the</strong> Donatelife Victoria Communication Skills<br />

Working Group. He has a special interest in end of life care and medical<br />

education. He <strong>is</strong> a member of <strong>the</strong> teaching faculty on several of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU<br />

post-graduate teaching courses and a coordinator of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU education<br />

program. He <strong>is</strong> completing h<strong>is</strong> Post graduate diploma of clinical ultrasound and<br />

h<strong>is</strong> diploma of diagnostic ultrasound and <strong>is</strong> a member of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU<br />

A/<strong>Prof</strong>. David Pilcher, <strong>MB</strong> <strong>BS</strong>, MRCP, <strong>FRACP</strong>, <strong>FCICM</strong>,<br />

Monash ICU Practitioner Fellowship<br />

Dave <strong>is</strong> an Intensive Care Special<strong>is</strong>t at <strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital. He trained in<br />

General and Respiratory Medicine in <strong>the</strong> UK before completing Intensive Care<br />

training in Australia. He <strong>is</strong> also chair of <strong>the</strong> ANZICS Centre for Outcomes and<br />

Resource Evaluation and an Associate <strong>Prof</strong>essor with <strong>the</strong> Department of<br />

Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine at Monash University. H<strong>is</strong> research<br />

interests are in <strong>the</strong> epidemiology and monitoring of Intensive Care outcomes,<br />

lung transplantation and organ donation.<br />

Dr Steve McGloughlin, Bsc (Hons), B.Med, <strong>FCICM</strong>, MPH&TM,<br />

PG<strong>Dip</strong>Echo<br />

Steve <strong>is</strong> an intensiv<strong>is</strong>t at <strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital. Prior to working at <strong>the</strong> Alfred<br />

he trained in intensive care units in <strong>the</strong> United Kingdom, <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Territory<br />

and Queensland, including a paediatric intensive care fellowship. He <strong>is</strong> also an<br />

infectious d<strong>is</strong>eases special<strong>is</strong>t and maintains both clinical and research interests<br />

in infections in critically ill patients. He has a special interest in education<br />

particularly <strong>the</strong> use of simulation and cr<strong>is</strong><strong>is</strong> resource management skills in<br />

critical care and has undertaked fur<strong>the</strong>r training in <strong>the</strong> use of advanced<br />

healthcare simulation. He <strong>is</strong> also <strong>the</strong> convener of two of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU post<br />

graduate education courses, in cr<strong>is</strong><strong>is</strong> resource management and in infectious<br />

d<strong>is</strong>eases in intensive care. H<strong>is</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r interests include echocardiography in<br />

which he has a post graduate diploma.<br />

Dr. Vinodh B Nanjayya, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong>, MD, EDIC, <strong>FCICM</strong>, DDU<br />

(Critical Care)<br />

Vinodh <strong>is</strong> a consultant intensiv<strong>is</strong>t at <strong>the</strong> Alfred hospital, Melbourne. He<br />

completed h<strong>is</strong> ICU fellowship in 2010 and worked as a Fellow in Critical Care<br />

Echocardiography at <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU. H<strong>is</strong> main area of interest <strong>is</strong> Critical Care<br />

Echocardiography and its use in patients on extra-corporeal life support. H<strong>is</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r special interests include echocardiography education, ICU epidemiology,<br />

Research and Biostat<strong>is</strong>tics. He <strong>is</strong> involved as a study co-investigator in a<br />

number of research projects at <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU. He <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> main co-ordinator of<br />

Alfred ICU Critical Care Ultrasound education and <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> joint co-ordinator of<br />

Alfred ICU junior medical staff education programme. He <strong>is</strong> involved in teaching<br />

in many of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU courses and <strong>is</strong> an ALS instructor. He <strong>is</strong> also involved<br />

in <strong>the</strong> development of Alfred ICU on-line learning packages for junior medical<br />

staff.<br />

Dr Irma Bilgrami, <strong>MB</strong>ChB, <strong>FCICM</strong>, PG<strong>Dip</strong>Echo<br />

Irma <strong>is</strong> an Intensive Care Special<strong>is</strong>t at <strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital. She moved to<br />

Melbourne after completing her basic medical training at <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Otago. Her physician and intensive care training has involved experience not<br />

only in Victoria but also Darwin and North Queensland.<br />

Her interests lie in echocardiography and clinical education. She has an active<br />

role in <strong>the</strong> Alfred education programme, <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> organ<strong>is</strong>er of <strong>the</strong> BASIC<br />

programme and <strong>is</strong> also an ALS instructor.<br />

Irma sits on <strong>the</strong> organ<strong>is</strong>ing committees for <strong>the</strong> Cr<strong>is</strong><strong>is</strong> Resource Management<br />

(CRM) and <strong>the</strong> Consultant in Transition (CIT) courses. She <strong>is</strong> also currently<br />

pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching (University of Melbourne).<br />

Dr. Paul Nixon, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong> (Hons), <strong>FCICM</strong><br />

Paul <strong>is</strong> an intensiv<strong>is</strong>t at The Alfred Hospital. H<strong>is</strong> interests include ventilation,<br />

echocardiography and critical care ultrasound, circulatory support and medical<br />

education. He <strong>is</strong> undertaking study at Monash University in health professional<br />

education and <strong>is</strong> part of <strong>the</strong> education faculty on a number of <strong>the</strong> Alfred postgraduate<br />

courses. He <strong>is</strong> currently completing h<strong>is</strong> diploma of diagnostic<br />

ultrasound in critical care and <strong>is</strong> part of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU echocardiography<br />

service. Paul completed a fellowship in paediatric intensive care at The Royal<br />

Children's Hospital in Melbourne and <strong>is</strong> a member of <strong>the</strong> Alfred Health<br />

paediatric steering commitee.<br />

Dr Richard Lin, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong>, FACEM, <strong>FCICM</strong>, PG<strong>Dip</strong>CU<br />

Richard <strong>is</strong> a consultant Intensiv<strong>is</strong>t and Emergency Physician at <strong>the</strong> Alfred<br />

Hospital. He was awarded <strong>the</strong> Post Graduate <strong>Dip</strong>loma of Clinical Ultrasound<br />

and <strong>is</strong> a member of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU echocardiography service. He <strong>is</strong> also an<br />

Advanced Life Support instructor and <strong>is</strong> on <strong>the</strong> teaching faculty of several Alfred<br />

ICU postgraduate courses. H<strong>is</strong> special interests include echocardiography,<br />

critical care ultrasound, resuscitation and medical education.<br />

Dr Josh Ihle, B Med, <strong>FCICM</strong>, PG<strong>Dip</strong>ECHO<br />

Josh completed h<strong>is</strong> physician training at <strong>the</strong> Alfred prior to undertaking h<strong>is</strong><br />

intensive care training, which concluded with an echocardiography fellowship at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Alfred. He has a keen interest in cardiothoracic intensive care, particularly<br />

ECMO and echocardiography. He has completed h<strong>is</strong> Post Graduate <strong>Dip</strong>loma of<br />

Echocardiography and <strong>is</strong> currently undertaking h<strong>is</strong> <strong>Dip</strong>loma of Diagnostic<br />

Ultrasound. H<strong>is</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r interests include organ donation, and currently <strong>is</strong> a<br />

member of <strong>the</strong> organ and t<strong>is</strong>sue donation hospital team. He <strong>is</strong> also a member<br />

of <strong>the</strong> teaching faculty on several of <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU courses, with a particular<br />

focus on echocardiography and ALS.


<strong>Prof</strong>. Al<strong>is</strong>tair Nichol, <strong>MB</strong>, BCh, BAO Overall Hons II,<br />

FCARCSI, <strong>FCICM</strong>, PhD, <strong>Dip</strong> Management, Vic Neurotrauma<br />

Foundation Practitioner fellowship<br />

PG<strong>Dip</strong>Echo.<br />

Al<strong>is</strong>tair <strong>is</strong> an honorary consultant intensiv<strong>is</strong>t in <strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital,<br />

Melbourne and an Associate <strong>Prof</strong>essor in <strong>the</strong> School of Public<br />

Health and Preventative Medicine, Monash University.<br />

Following completion of a PhD at University College Dublin,<br />

Al<strong>is</strong>tair continued h<strong>is</strong> clinical and research work in <strong>the</strong> Alfred ICU<br />

examining optimal mechanical ventilation strategies in ARDS.<br />

After a successful pilot <strong>the</strong> PHARLAP Open Lung Ventilation<br />

Strategy (dev<strong>is</strong>ed by Alfred ICU Intensiv<strong>is</strong>ts) will now be tested in<br />

a large phase II RCT. Al<strong>is</strong>tair continues to co-ordinate and ass<strong>is</strong>t<br />

on th<strong>is</strong> study and on a number of large multi-centre random<strong>is</strong>ed<br />

controlled trials (> $7,000,000.00 funding) many of which <strong>the</strong><br />

Alfred ICU <strong>is</strong> a lead site.<br />

A/<strong>Prof</strong> Robert Salamonsen, Emeritus Intensiv<strong>is</strong>t<br />

<strong>MB</strong> ChB, FANZCA,<strong>FCICM</strong>, MD, Cert Hyperbaric Med<br />

Associate professor Salamonsen holds <strong>the</strong> post of Emeritus<br />

Consultant in Intensive Care at The Alfred Hospital as well as an<br />

academic appointment in <strong>the</strong> Department of Surgery at Monash<br />

University. He has spent most of h<strong>is</strong> working life in <strong>the</strong> fields of<br />

Cardiac Intensive Care and Perfusion. He pioneered <strong>the</strong><br />

introduction of ECMO and Ventricular Ass<strong>is</strong>t Devices into clinical<br />

service at The Alfred and establ<strong>is</strong>hed <strong>the</strong> ICU service for patients<br />

presenting for cardiac and lung transplantation. He has<br />

conducted research in rotary heart pumps with particular focus<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Australian Ventrass<strong>is</strong>t LVAS and has publ<strong>is</strong>hed widely in<br />

<strong>the</strong> field of mechanical ass<strong>is</strong>t to heart and lungs.<br />

Currently h<strong>is</strong> research interests are <strong>the</strong> development of Starlinglike<br />

physiological control systems for rotary blood pumps and<br />

feasibility studies on <strong>the</strong> technique of preservation and<br />

transplantation of <strong>the</strong> heart after cardiac death.<br />

Dr. Alex Padiglione, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong> (Hons) (Monash) <strong>FRACP</strong> PhD<br />

(Monash)<br />

<strong>is</strong> an Infectious D<strong>is</strong>eases Physician in <strong>the</strong> Infectious D<strong>is</strong>eases Department at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital and has portfolio responsibility for Intensive Care & Burns<br />

Infections.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r interests include Travel medicine, HIV medicine and medical<br />

education.<br />

He also works at Monash Medical Centre where he <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> head of Monash<br />

Travel Health, and runs an Intensive Care Consultation service with <strong>the</strong> ICU at<br />

Dandenong Hospital in Melbourne. H<strong>is</strong> current research interests include <strong>the</strong><br />

epidemiology of burns wound infection, and antibiotic prescribing in ICU.


Dr Andrew Fock, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong>, FANZCA, <strong>Dip</strong> <strong>DHM</strong><br />

Is Head of Hyperbaric Medicine and superv<strong>is</strong>or of training in<br />

diving and hyperbaric medicine at <strong>the</strong> Alfred. Andrew’s primary<br />

special<strong>is</strong>t training <strong>is</strong> as an Anaes<strong>the</strong>t<strong>is</strong>t, completing h<strong>is</strong><br />

fellowship in Cardiac Anaes<strong>the</strong>sia and intraoperative trans<br />

oesophageal echo-cardiology. While still maintaining a private<br />

practice in Anaes<strong>the</strong>sia, Andrew took up a VMO position at <strong>the</strong><br />

Hyperbaric Unit in 2004, subsequently gaining h<strong>is</strong> diploma in<br />

Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine with h<strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>s<strong>is</strong> on<br />

Decompression <strong>the</strong>ory and Deep decompression stops. He has<br />

more than a dozen publ<strong>is</strong>hed papers in <strong>the</strong> peer reviewed diving<br />

literature and <strong>is</strong> a regular invited speaker to both scientific<br />

hyperbaric meetings and diving industry conferences around <strong>the</strong><br />

world. He <strong>is</strong> a board member of <strong>the</strong> Divers Alert Network Asia-<br />

Pacific and <strong>is</strong> senior medical adv<strong>is</strong>or to <strong>the</strong> DAN Australasian<br />

diver mortality study. He <strong>is</strong> an active technical mixed gas diver<br />

and has led a number of diving expeditions to shipwrecks<br />

around <strong>the</strong> world to depths in excess of 120 msw. He <strong>is</strong> also<br />

holds a comm<strong>is</strong>sion in <strong>the</strong> RANR, providing expert<strong>is</strong>e in <strong>the</strong><br />

areas of diving and hyperbaric medicine to <strong>the</strong> ADF.<br />

Dr Chin Wei Ch’ng, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong> FACEM<br />

<strong>is</strong> a Hyperbaric Physician at The Alfred Hospital and an<br />

Emergency Physician at Casey Hospital in Melbourne’s South<br />

Eastern growth corridor.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> interests include Resident teaching and Mentoring, and<br />

Motorsport Trauma being actively<br />

involved in many international motorsport events.

<strong>is</strong> a Hyperbaric Physician at <strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital. He <strong>is</strong> also a<br />

Senior Paediatric Anaes<strong>the</strong>t<strong>is</strong>t at <strong>the</strong> Royal Children’s Hospital<br />

and a Clinical Associate <strong>Prof</strong>essor in <strong>the</strong> Department of<br />

Paediatrics, Melbourne University. He has received a number of<br />

research grants, including an ANZCA Project grant and two<br />

NHMRC grants in which he <strong>is</strong> an associate investigator in one<br />

and a chief investigator in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. He <strong>is</strong> widely publ<strong>is</strong>hed, and<br />

has given many invited presentations, both overseas and within<br />

Australia. H<strong>is</strong> research interests include paediatric hyperbaric<br />

oxygen <strong>the</strong>rapy, anaes<strong>the</strong>tic neurotoxicity in <strong>the</strong> neonate, local<br />

anaes<strong>the</strong>tic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and<br />

anaes<strong>the</strong>sia for congenital syndromes.<br />

Dr Ian Millar, <strong>MB</strong><strong>BS</strong>, FAFOEM, FUHM, <strong>Dip</strong> <strong>DHM</strong>, Cert <strong>DHM</strong><br />

Is a Hyperbaric physician at <strong>the</strong> Alfred Hospital, with 28 years of<br />

experience in diving and hyperbaric medicine. He <strong>is</strong> Principal<br />

Investigator for an international multicentre study of hyperbaric<br />

oxygen in severe musculoskeletal trauma, <strong>the</strong> HOLLT study<br />

(NHMRC Project Grant 490966). He <strong>is</strong> regularly invited to speak<br />

at international meetings on <strong>the</strong> role of hyperbaric oxygen in<br />

trauma and on hyperbaric chamber and hyperbaric medical<br />

equipment safety and design. He <strong>is</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> few diving<br />

medicine doctors with experience and expert<strong>is</strong>e in offshore<br />

industry diving medical support, including saturation diving. He<br />

<strong>is</strong> involved in various commercial and recreational diving<br />

standards setting bodies, including Standards Australia, <strong>the</strong><br />

Australasian Diver Accreditation Scheme and <strong>the</strong> International<br />

Marine Contractors Association Diving Medical Adv<strong>is</strong>ory<br />

Committee. He continues to serve as a medical adv<strong>is</strong>or to a<br />

range of diving, hyperbaric and tunneling safety and research<br />

related bodies. He also provides medical oversight for <strong>the</strong><br />

Metropolitan Fire Brigade's involvement in Victoria's early<br />

defibrillation program and consults to various governments<br />

regarding technical specifications for new hyperbaric facilities.<br />

As a younger doctor, he had operational involvement in rescue<br />

and emergency services and remains interested in mountain,<br />

marine and extreme environment physiology and search and<br />

rescue related medical support.<br />

In 2013, he was awarded a Fellowship in Undersea and<br />

Hyperbaric Medicine by The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical<br />

Society.
