Each and every one of us, as we
grow older and become more
aware of our mortality and the brevity
of our lives, typically will look back
on our lives and ask ourselves if we
have made a difference. How is the
world different because of my life?
Have I left this world a better place than when I entered it – or not? What impact have I
made? What will be my legacy? There is something innate in us that makes us search for
meaning and for purpose and with a desire to make a difference.
Mother Teresa, who is quoted above, did not perform acts of charity or care for the poor,
the sick and the dying as a way to achieve fame, but rather because it was the right thing
to do – the only thing to do in her mind – as she saw the face of Jesus Christ in those she
cared for. She was truly an embodiment of the love of God and her impact on the world
continues to be felt.
I have long been proud of the various accomplishments of our students and alumni.
Many of them have done truly remarkable things and have made a difference. However,
nothing impresses me more than when a Prep student or alumnus makes a difference
through the service they do for others and when they do it for no other purpose than
because they wanted to make a difference. That is the attitude that we strive to instill in
all of our students at Cathedral Prep.
As I read through the stories of our students and alumni within this issue of the Cathedral
Prep Magazine, I am both humbled and inspired by the impact they have made and
continue to make in the world. Although their endeavors are wide and varied, the
common thread through all of them is the service that they have done for others. As such,
they have used their God-given talents, skills and opportunities to make a difference – to
make an impact on the world. Like Mother Teresa, they in their own way have become
that “little pencil” of God who is working through them to send a message of love and
compassion to the world.
I hope you will not only enjoy reading these stories as much as I have, but also be inspired
to make a difference in the world and thus become a “little pencil” in the hand of a writing
God.
