Sunday 26 August Monday 27 August Bandhu Scott Dunham - Some Assembly Required: The Kinetic Glass Sculpture of Bandhu Dunham Bandhu Dunham always wanted to be a mad scientist as a child. His interest in glass sprang from the extensive chemistry lab he assembled in his parents’ basement back in the 1970s. Bandhu’s presentation will be a multimedia exploration of working model steam engines, motorized marble tracks and automata, laced with a bit of technical information and wit. Time: 11am Antoine Leperlier – Poise: Antoine Leperlier in the Flux of Time Renowned for his philosophical rigour and the technical complexity of his work, the lecture will explore the relationship between ideas and making, and thinking in glass as a material, in the œuvre of an artist frequently recognised as the most significant figure in contemporary French glass. This talk will also, for the first time publicly, introduce a major ‘work-in-progress’ - a large-scale glass installation project in Beijing. Time: 12noon Lani McGregor - Three Guys and a Dog: the Beginning, Middle, and Loose Ends of Bullseye Glass Started in 1974 by three art school graduates (and a dog) with the implausible idea of making glass, art, and money, the Bullseye Glass factory has grown into a barely definable hybrid of manufacturer, school, research center, retailer, gallery and international artist community. Bullseye partner and gallery director Lani McGregor will attempt to untangle the various threads of today¹s Bullseye, its historical imperatives, and its ongoing work with contemporary artists. Time: 1pm In conversation with Peter Layton An exploration of the development of studio glass since the late 1960s on both sides of the Atlantic with glassmakers who were among the early pioneers and still continue to develop their glass work. Time: 2pm - 3.30pm Diana East and Sean Taylor - A Perfectionist’s Playground: Crafting Miniature Worlds in Flameworked Beads and Marbles A global overview of makers and techniques of flame worked beads and marbles. Time: 10am Peter Layton - The History of London Glassblowing and its many alumni. Time: 11am Antoine Leperlier - Polychrome sculpture In this lecture, Antoine will reference the ancestral roots of his own glass in the work of François Décorchemont. Time: 12noon John Lewis - Cast Glass in the Architecture A visual presentation of John’s involvement with glass throughout his career of 45 years, beginning with the early years of blown glass to his current work involving cast glass sculpture and the placement of cast glass into the architecture. Time: 1pm Nick Baker - Glassmaking in America – 404 Years On. The John Sanders Memorial Lecture In this year when we celebrate the 400th anniversary of glassmaking in Stourbridge, it may be surprising to learn that glassmaking in Colonial America pre-dates this by four years! Nick presents an account of the first attempt at industrialisation in the newly founded colony of Jamestown in Virginia, when a primitive factory was built in the hope of exporting cheap glassware back to England. Address: Corner of High Street & Vicarage Road, Amblecote DY8 4JA The Festival Office is open from 10am – 5pm daily during the Festival. Admission to the Ruskin Glass Centre and Glasshouse Arts Centre is £5 for a day pass (£1 for children) and £14.50 for an adult four day Festival Pass. Admission to other Festival Venues is free (apart from Bodenham Arboretum), although some charges may apply for some activities. Visitor Information Car parking Car parking is limited at Festival sites. You are advised to park and then use the Festival shuttle service or National Express between sites. Free Festival Shuttle Bus - 9.30am - 5.30pm A free shuttle bus service will operate between sites during the festival. Services will operate approximately every 30 minutes and will stop at clearly marked stops. Please ensure that you plan your return journey to your car - last shuttle bus service will leave just after 5pm. Bus services In addition to the Festival Shuttle Bus, National Express West Midlands services 256 and 257 run from Stourbridge bus station (stand G) past all Festival sites. Visit www.nxbus.co.uk/west-midlands Train The nearest train stations are Stourbridge Junction/Stourbridge Town. It is an easy walk from Stourbridge Town train station into the town centre. From Stourbridge Junction, you will need to catch the shuttle train to Stourbridge Town - the shortest branch line in Europe! The Festival Shuttle Bus services will operate from the bus stop on Stourbridge Ring Road, opposite Crystal Leisure Centre. Walking Most Festival sites are within walking distance of each other. Stroll along the canal for an alternative to the main road.
