A STAND
OUT NIGHT
AT THE 2011
When the call went out to Greater Toronto Area communicators
to Step Up! Stand Out! for the 2011 IABC/Toronto OVATION
Awards, they did just that. It was another record-breaking
year for the OVATION Awards with the highest number of
entries, awards and Gala attendees since the inception of
the awards program 26 years ago.
“ This campaign helped bring Crohn’s and Colitis, an illness
that has not traditionally been discussed, to the attention
of the media,” said Jacqueline Waldorf, Manager, Marketing
and Communications, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of
Canada. “This award will help our organization push more
boundaries and be more creative in continuing to raise
the profile of this issue.”
MC Lee Smart, Second City
Communications
OVATION
AWARDS
Toronto is the largest IABC Chapter in
the world, so it’s not surprising that the
OVATION Awards continue to be a
success. This year’s OVATION Awards
showcased some of the finest creative
and innovative communications locally,
and perhaps, in the world.
“With each passing year we continue
to be amazed by the creativity and
professionalism demonstrated by the
entries, making the judging process
all the more difficult,” said Brigette
Kocijancic, ABC, VP, Accreditation and
Standards, IABC/Toronto. “Fortunately,
we have a large community of senior
communicators who graciously volunteered
their expertise and time to judge
the entries. A sincere thank you to the
53 judges who helped manage this year’s
record-breaking number of entries.”
There was excitement and anticipation
in the air as the awards were presented
at the OVATION Gala on Wednesday,
May 25, 2011, at the Liberty Grand
in Toronto. Gala host Lee Smart, from
Second City Communications, kept
more than 300 attendees entertained
as IABC/Toronto President Carrie
MacAfee presented the awards. In total,
88 OVATION Awards were presented,
including 34 Awards of Excellence,
48 Awards of Merit, five Awards of Distinction
and the People’s Choice Award.
This year, people were invited to tweet
about the Gala using #IABCtoronto, and
their tweets appeared live on several tweet
walls. Based on the buzz on Twitter, one
of the highlights of the Gala was
definitely the music. IABC/Toronto
Executive Vice President Trell Huether
selected songs to match each of the
entries. The only place to hear such a
variety of classic songs—new and old
—on a Wednesday night in Toronto
was at the Liberty Grand.
Yet another record was broken this year
with the highest ever number of votes
for the People’s Choice Award. Based on
votes from IABC/Toronto members,
the award went to Strategic Objectives
and the Body Shop for their campaign
entitled “The Body Shop ‘Stop Sex
Trafficking of Children and Young
People’ Petition.”
“We are inspired by the support the
members of IABC/Toronto have shown
us and the Body Shop to help stop the
sex trafficking of children and young
people,” said Judy Lewis, Co-founder
and Executive Vice-President, Strategic
Objectives. “This award shows the power
of PR and the strength of communications
in creating positive changes in
our world.”
Strategic Objectives was also awarded the Award
of Distinction for Large Agency of the Year. With
three Awards of Excellence and four Awards of
Merit, the team at Strategic Objectives continues
to raise the bar for communications excellence.
They also partnered with first-time entrant, the
Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada, to
win two OVATION Awards for their campaign
entitled “Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Month”.
“This campaign helped bring Crohn’s and Colitis,
an illness that has not traditionally been
discussed, to the attention of the media,” said
Jacqueline Waldorf, Manager, Marketing and
Communications, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation
of Canada. “This award will help our organization
push more boundaries and be more
creative in continuing to raise the profile of
this issue.”
Rogers Communications took home the Award
of Distinction for Corporate Communications
Department of the Year, winning three Awards
of Excellence and three Awards of Merit. With
wins in categories ranging from Special Events
to Social Media, Rogers Communications
demonstrated that they really stand out.
For the second year in a row, the Award of
Distinction for Mid-sized Agency of the Year
went to Argyle Communications with three
Awards of Excellence and three Awards of
Merit. Adding to the high for the Argyle
team was a door prize for best dancing.
not be possible without their generous support.
another year, but it’s never too early to start
thinking about next year. Check out the
President’s
Message
As social media flourishes, it would seem that everyone has
something to say and they want to say it to a lot of people,
immediately. With all of these voices competing for an audience,
our role as communicators surges in importance. We need
to rise above the clamor, give it shape and make it meaningful.
As this year’s OVATION Awards theme indicates, we need to
Step Up! Stand Out!
This special issue of the Communicator is dedicated to recognition
and illustrates what a year of excellence IABC/Toronto has had.
Peter Aceto of ING Direct Canada wowed us with his engaging
and authentic dedication to communication and its integral
role in leadership when he was named the IABC/Toronto
Communicator of the Year.
We then recognized OVATION Award winners—an impressive
roster of diverse communicators who showed us how effective
and strategic communication can also be cool and exciting.
We also recognized Humber College student Regis Dudley
as the IABC/Toronto Student of the Year, and Paul Nguyen
received the Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy Award on behalf
of Jane-Finch.com.
In addition to the winners named in this issue, I’d like to thank
and congratulate everyone who entered or nominated someone
for one of these awards. While receiving praise and recognition
may be easy, submitting entries is a significant endeavor. It takes
an extra push of time and energy to summarize a project or a
person’s work in a way that tells the judges a story and clearly
shows them why that story matters.
Thanks to the many IABC/Toronto volunteers who have worked
so hard on the awards programs mentioned above. I know that
you gave hours of your own time to make it happen.
I also extend my sincere thanks to our sponsors, CIRA, News
Canada, CNW, Fusion Design Group Inc., and The Canadian
Press Images.
Enjoy the stories in this issue of the Communicator. See what it
takes to Step Up! Stand Out!
OVATION Awards
Get Social
This year marked the first time that IABC/Toronto
actively incorporated social media into the 2011
OVATION Awards Gala. As part of the celebration,
people were encouraged to congratulate deserving
winners and thank sponsors in real-time using the
#IABCtoronto hashtag. Tweets from the Greater
Toronto Area’s top communicators were showcased
live on seven large screens (Twitter Walls) to more
than 300 people in attendance.
Participation in the online conversation wasn’t limited to those in attendance
either. In fact, that evening on Twitter, #IABCtoronto was trending
as it was one of the most discussed topics in Toronto!
Social media promotion also played an important role in securing a recordnumber
of award entries leading up to the gala. IABC/Toronto members
and non-members were invited to enter the program and register for the
gala through Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
IABC/Toronto is looking forward to building on this year’s social media
successes and hopes you will check-in at the 2012 OVATION Awards!
2010
Communicator of
the Year Award
Goes to Peter Aceto,
ING Direct Canada
Peter Aceto, President and CEO of ING DIRECT
Canada places a very high value on connecting
with people. His passion for communicating strategically
and on a straightforward level has earned
him IABC/Toronto’s 2010 Communicator of the
Year (COTY) Award.
Every year, IABC/Toronto recognizes a Greater
Toronto Area leader who demonstrates exceptional
communication leadership and has developed
communication strategies that contribute to the
ongoing success of an organization. Aceto’s commitment
to strategic communication and innovation
has helped ING DIRECT become Canada’s leading
direct bank, since taking on the role of CEO in 2008.
He has overseen the launch of employee communication
and social media programs that have
made it possible for ING DIRECT to play an
active part in online communication and set new
standards for communication in a traditionally
conservative industry.
“Peter Aceto is an innovative leader who understands
the enormous value of engaging all of his
audiences, both internal and external, through
transparent and genuine communication,” said
Carrie MacAfee, President, IABC/Toronto. “His
passion for building a corporate culture based on
trust and authenticity is not only inspiring, it gets
tremendous business results.”
On March 30, 2011 IABC/Toronto presented
Aceto with the COTY Award at a special breakfast
held in his honour. At the event, Aceto spoke
about the need to communicate more quickly,
more regularly and with more information, to
large and diverse audiences. He noted that paying
attention to social media and sharing on sites like
Twitter have become essential business tactics,
observing that many key audiences, including
customers, or potential customers, are doing most
of their communicating in the digital sphere. Aceto
believes that business leaders must follow suit and
do so in an authentic way that is meaningful to
their audience.
“People will listen and will engage when a leader or
speaker is driven, believes in his or her cause and
is passionate about making it real,” said Aceto.
“Whether I am chatting with a customer at our
call centre, or Tweeting with a THRiVE account
holder, or delivering a speech to students at a
business school, it all comes back to connecting
people to that passion,” he said. “And it’s a passion
my teammates at ING Direct Canada share.”
Communicator of the Year Award, visit:
Each year, an open call is put out asking
IABC/Toronto members and non-members to
nominate a leader they think should be
Communicator of the Year and to provide a
rationale for their choice. The nominees are
reviewed by a panel of past IABC/Toronto
presidents, and the Communicator of the Year
is chosen.
Public Relations
has a new face,
and she’s only just getting started.
Regis Dudley strongly believes in the power of social media. Her news release, “Accessible and webfriendly
brands are better,” explains the importance of being digital in today’s communications world,
and her creative approach is what garnered her the title of IABC/Toronto’s Student of the Year.
The IABC/Toronto Student of the Year Award, presented at this year’s
OVATION Gala on May 25, 2011, is given to the student who demonstrates
strong writing, shows a passion for communications, and is active
in their community. It’s clear from Dudley’s entry that she is destined to
go far. Dudley shows how to Step Up! Stand Out! with her passion and
innovative perspective on communications.
Her use of social media and digital platforms to further communications
agendas made a difference; Dudley uses her knowledge and volunteers her
time to write social media plans for organizations such as M-Network and
Tigits Inc. “If you’re not connecting online, you’re missing opportunities
to make a name for yourself and your organization,” Dudley states in
her news release.
In her writing sample, Dudley uses the TV show Survivor to illustrate
change management in a unique way. As one judge put it, “What could
potentially be a very boring or stale topic, she looked at it differently and
made it stand out! This is crucial in communications today, in order to cut
through information overload and clutter.”
In addition, Dudley’s vast communications and volunteer experience gave her
an edge. She displays leadership in her role as mentor to over 250 people,
and has been active in the public relations industry, garnering coverage,
managing volunteers, and being a spokesperson. With an Honours B.A. in
Communications and Environmental Studies from Wilfrid Laurier
University, Dudley is currently enrolled in the Public Relations Ontario
Graduate Certificate at Humber College, and doesn’t plan on stopping there.
“I look forward to harnessing new ways to connect digitally and using this
knowledge to benefit the PR community,” states Dudley. “People have
interests and goals that may be different from their neighbours. Social media
allows people to connect with others in different places and celebrate
what they’re passionate about. That’s so important to human well-being
and social connection.”
We’ve seen the field of communications go through so much change recently,
with social media being a big factor. So what does Dudley recommend for
students looking to get into this field? “Expand your PR knowledge base.
When you know a lot about PR, you start to develop your own style and
philosophy,” Dudley says. “There are many ways to do this: IABC professional
development events and publications, Twitter chats, newspapers, popular
books… and chats with friends in the business.”
PAUL NGUYEN
STEPS UP
IN HIS COMMUNITY
AND WINS THE
BOBBIE RESNICK
PHILANTHROPY
AWARD
After watching years of social injustice and stereotyping
thrive in the infamous Jane and Finch area of Toronto,
Paul Nguyen decided it was time to set the record
straight. In 2004, Nguyen created Jane-Finch.com to
foster a positive dialogue regarding the divisive issues
in the community. Seven years later, Paul Nguyen is
recognized for his outstanding communications leadership
with the 2011 Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy Award.
The Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy
Award is handed out annually to
professional communicators who
demonstrate leadership and dedication,
while making a positive
contribution to the profession
and community. This year, Bobbie
Resnick, ABC, APR, MC, IABC
Fellow, presented the award to
Paul Nguyen at IABC/Toronto’s
2011 OVATION Awards Gala.
Jane-Finch.com, the first website
dedicated to the Jane and Finch
community, houses years of digital
media, such as videos, interviews,
pictures and online resources. There
is also an extensive history of the
area, detailing the community’s
past. The website highlights the
area’s cultural strengths, including
its local musicians, artists and poets,
as well as its struggles, such as with
racial discrimination.
Over the years as the site increased
in popularity and usage, the website
integrated a space to discuss
political issues, and incited conversations
regarding public policy and
local needs. Now, Jane-Finch.com
gives the neighbourhood residents
Bobbie Resnick and 2011 Bobbie Resnick
Philanthropy Award winner Paul Nguyen,
Jane-Finch.com
a voice to speak out about news
and issues in their community.
IABC/Toronto Bobbie Resnick
Philanthropy Award judge Priya
Bates, ABC, MC was particularly
impressed with the number of interviews
with local political candidates
that were posted on the site, allowing
community members to hear from
their leaders in order to make
informed decisions.
Jane-Finch.com is unique in the
fact that it offers something for all
online visitors. Whether searching
for current community news, local
artisan information or simply to
buy some Jane-Finch swag, Paul
Nguyen has created a website that
is aimed to please. One of the most
important aspects of the website is
its forums, where locals can safely
and openly discuss issues that affect
them directly on a daily basis.
Nguyen has been thrilled with the
considerable media attention the
site receives. “The positive response
from the media shows that the public
is genuinely interested to learn more
about the positive things that happen
in the Jane-Finch community,” says
Nguyen. “As Jane-Finch.com grows,
I hope future generations will use
the website to help develop new
ideas to improve our community.”
“Jane-Finch.com was the vision of
a young man who wanted to give
his community a voice. Through
the website, he has inspired people,
educated them, and given them
back their pride,” says Bates. “This
tool seems to be working for the
community itself and is highlighting
positive things about the community.”
It is for this leadership in
communications that IABC/Toronto
is proud to honour Paul Nguyen
with the 2011 Bobbie Resnick
Philanthropy Award.
Awards of Distinction
The following awards celebrate exceptional
OVATION Awards. The IABC/Toronto
of score of the Excellence awards.
