The Final Word: Celebrating
the 2009 OVATION Awards
Winners at the 2009 OVATION Awards prove that “Word Gets
Around” when creative strategies are matched with communications
excellence. The winning programs rose above the noise, delivered
their messages and received well-deserved recognition. This
year saw a record number of OVATION entries and tremendous
participation in the People’s Choice Award vote, confirming that
motivation and vision can generate powerful results in a fiercely
competitive communications industry. In total, 55 awards were
handed out. The awards gala was once again sold out thanks to
the continuous support of the communications community.
Toronto Hydro-Electric System was one of
the night’s big winners as it walked away with
the People’s Choice Award as selected by the
IABC/Toronto membership in an online poll.
In addition to the People’s Choice Award,
its team received two Awards of Excellence
and one Award of Merit in Communication
Management for their outstanding campaign,
“Take a Load Off Toronto.” The goal of this
integrated, multi-media campaign was to
encourage consumers to adopt energy-saving
behaviours such as the use of clotheslines.
The capacity and power of a consumerdriven
campaign and its focus on market
transformation proved a brilliant measure
for engagement and widespread education.
“[The campaign] matches government,
corporate and consumer interests to save
both energy and money for everyone’s
advantage. The team did an excellent job
of meeting Hydro’s need for timely and
effective programming,” the OVATION
judges noted.
Strategic Objectives led the large Public
Relations agencies with three Awards of
Excellence in Communication Management
and one Award of Merit in Communication
Creative. The award-winning campaigns,
which received recognition included “40th
Anniversary of the Caramilk Secret,” “The
Johnnie Walker Pillars of Responsibility,”
“New Stride Canadian Brand Launch” and
“The Rollout of New Pink Cashmere.”
Strategic Objectives’ Canadian brand
launch for Stride Gum featured two Stride
representatives playing ping-pong with
Canadians on a road trip across Canada,
which contributed to extraordinary business results including market
share increases that surpassed all forecasts. “It is an incredible honour
to be recognized by IABC/Toronto as all of the campaigns were unique
unto themselves and all achieved measurable objectives. Creativity
and innovation allows a campaign to be memorable not only from a
PR point of view, but from a success point of view,” says Judy Lewis,
co-founder and executive vice-president of Strategic Objectives.
In addition to well-established awards, new categories made their
debut in this year’s competition. “The Allstream Global Forum: An
Evening with Steve Forbes” won the inaugural Award of Excellence in
Communication Management in the Customer Relations category.
Designed to distinguish the company from its competitors, strengthen
customer relationships and create demand for business solutions, the
project demonstrated the strategic use of seminar selling in order to
generate outstanding sales results. “Our team is very honoured to be
recognized with this award as it demonstrates the in-house expertise
at Allstream to support our team and generate sales results,” says
Christine E. Gerritse, senior manager of Marketing Communications
at Allstream.
The programs designed by this year’s winners demonstrate the
remarkable passion, dedication and expertise that exemplify the
communications profession as one capable of measurable results and
prompting beneficial change. While the changing communications
landscape brings new challenges, it also creates opportunities for
strategic and innovative communication with stakeholders in a
competitive market. This year’s entries represent the wide scope of
capabilities from the area’s most notable communicators and attests
to the intense drive to deliver messages and be heard.
Jess Bennett, 2009 IABC/Toronto MAVERICK PR Student of the Year
The IABC/Toronto MAVERICK PR Student of the Year award is presented annually to a student
who demonstrates exceptional communications skills and exceptional creativity. Award judge and
President of MAVERICK PR, Julie Rusciolelli, presented this year’s award to Jess Bennett.
Jess is a graduate of Seneca College’s Corporate Communication program and the Master of
Professional Communication program from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. She
has already made a name for herself in social media with her blog titled “Sift, Dust & Toss”
about her passion for food, which is definitely worth the read.
Judges were impressed with Jess’ submission stating, “While it was difficult to select a winner from
the record breaking number of submissions this year, we felt that Jess’ creativity, commitment to
excellence and strong leadership made her stand out from the rest.”
Pictured left to right: Julie Rusciolelli,
and Jess Bennett
To be considered for this award, entrants were required to submit a news release on how they plan
to make an impact on the future practice of communications and submit one writing sample. Jess’
news release titled “Engagement Announcement: Public Relations to Wed Social Media” caught
the judges’ attention immediately. The release stated that, “Social media has become a buzz word,
but communicators must remember that it is a tactic fitting into a greater strategy.”
And the Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy
award goes to... APEX Public Relations
The 2009 Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy award was presented
to APEX Public Relations Inc. for its entry “Charity Starts at
the Office – Creating On Your Bike!” Bobbie Resnick, ABC,
APR, MC, IABC Fellow, presented the prestigious award to
Pat McNamara, APR, Tracey Bochner, APR, Ellen Leesti
and Scott MacFadyen.
On Your Bike! (OYB!) is a not-for-profit foundation that collects second-hand bicycles
to repair and donate to disadvantaged children throughout Toronto. According to
award judges, the campaign was “A simple but very powerful idea. The project offers
employees a great opportunity to become involved and make a very meaningful
contribution to the community.” This is a true philanthropic effort, which will
continue to give back for years to come.
Looking to the future, OYB! has organized many successful bike drives. As APEX
celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, the agency made a special $10,000 donation
to purchase new bikes to be distributed through the organization this year.
