DAZZLING DISPLAY
OF COLOURS AT
OVATION
AWARDS
GALA!
There was no holding back when IABC/Toronto asked communicators
in the Greater Toronto Area to “Show Your Colours!” The quality
of talent was unmistakable as the winners were selected for their
strategic and creative projects within the GTA.
With IABC/Toronto being the largest IABC
chapter in the world, Trell Huether, President,
IABC/Toronto, expected nothing less from the
GTA’s high level of innovative communicators.
“This year, the winning OVATION entries
demonstrated that strategic communications
is imperative to driving any organization or
campaign,” says Huether. “The diversity and
high quality of communications work being
done in the GTA is truly something to be
celebrated.”
A successful event from the start, the 27 th
annual OVATION Awards were held in
Toronto at the Liberty Grand on May 30
and were hosted by the acclaimed Lee Smart
of Second City Communications.
As the contagious energy of the more than
300 attendees grew, the crowd cheered vigorously
as their colleagues began to receive their
awards, which included Awards of Excellence,
Awards of Merit, five Awards of Distinction,
People’s Choice Award, IABC/Toronto
Student of the Year and the Bobbie Resnick
Philanthropy Award.
Back by popular demand, the night’s
playlist, put together by Huether, cleverly
matched songs to each winning project,
which made for entertaining song choices
from every genre of music including songs
by Missy Elliot, Tim McGraw and Otis
Redding to name a few.
With the music playing and the guests
cheering, the tweet wall kept the conversation
alive as the crowd tweeted
their congratulations and comments
using the hashtags #IABCToronto and
#OVATIONAwards.
As the winners were announced, it became
clear that Strategic Objectives was a force,
with four Awards of Excellence, five Awards
of Merit and the Award of Distinction for
mid-sized agency of the year.
“We are honoured to be here tonight
and recognized by IABC/Toronto through
several OVATION awards,” said Deborah
Weinstein, President, Strategic Objectives.
“PR has awesome power to grow, build,
maintain, protect and sell brands. Strategic
Objectives’ diverse OVATION award-winning
programs for a variety of clients clearly
demonstrate that telling a relevant, credible
and meaningful story to the right people,
at the right time, can move your consumer
up the brand ladder from awareness, to
acceptance, advocate and adorer.”
Barrick Gold Corporation was honoured
with the Award of Distinction for Corporate
Communications Department of the year.
Winning two Awards of Excellence and
three Awards of Merit this year, there is
no doubt Barrick Gold Corporation is a
leader in innovative and strategic corporate
communications.
The OVATION Awards also recognized
several projects from the government and
corporate communications sectors. Among
them was the Town of Oakville, a first time
entrant and winner, taking home an Award
of Excellence and Award of Merit for its
Oakville Canopy Club program. Senior
Communications Advisor for the Town
of Oakville explains, “This was our first
IABC/Toronto OVATION Awards submission,
so it’s amazing to be recognized
by such a talented group of industry professionals,
let alone honoured with two awards.
We’re incredibly proud of our Oakville
Canopy Club—an innovative campaign
that inspired residents to save Oakville’s ash
tree canopy from the threat of the Emerald
Ash Borer. Our mini in-house team took
a vision, made it a reality and the result
was brilliant.”
With the night drawing to a close, the
anticipation grew for the People’s Choice
Award, voted by IABC/Toronto members in
recognition of the best communications
campaign of the year. Narrative Advocacy
Media took home the pristine award for
its “Best Conversation Ever” campaign
developed for WIND Mobile.
IABC/Toronto would like to send a
special thanks to the 2012 OVATION
Award judges, volunteers and sponsors:
News Canada, The Canadian Press
Images, CNW Group, Cision, Fusion
Design Group and Sobeys. The success
of the OVATION Awards would not be
possible without their generous support.
As this year comes to a close for the
IABC/Toronto OVATION Awards, it is
never too early to begin thinking about
how you will Show Your Colours! in 2013.
President’s
Message
It was amazing to see so many of the
GTA’s strongest and brightest communicators
gather together at this year’s
OVATION Awards gala.
After 27 years, the OVATION Awards
are only getting better, and the more than
200 entries we received this year prove
that. Hundreds of communications
professionals were out in full force
on May 30 th at the Liberty Grand in
Toronto showing their colours and
displaying why Toronto is the largest
IABC chapter in the world.
The OVATION Awards showcase the
best the communications industry has to
offer within the GTA, and it’s obvious
Toronto-area professionals take their
work seriously. But what is working
hard without playing hard? The Tweet
wall was active throughout the event,
the MC for the evening, Lee Smart, kept
the audience actively engaged, and the
laughter flowed throughout the evening.
The colours of the Greater Toronto Area
communications industry have never
been brighter, with Narrative Advocacy
Media winning the coveted People’s Choice
Award for its WIND Mobile “Best
Conversation Ever” campaign, and five
Awards of Distinction given to Diana
Degan & Associates, MAVERICK PR,
Strategic Objectives, Edelman Canada
and Barrick Gold Corporation.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank
all of the volunteers, judges and entrants
for their time and energy in making this
year’s OVATION Awards a huge success.
The event is driven by volunteers from
start to finish, and without your tireless
efforts, this amazing night wouldn’t have
been possible.
I’d also like to thank our sponsors, News
Canada, Canadian Press Images, CNW
Group, Cision, Fusion Design Group and
Sobeys. Without you the event couldn’t
have come together.
I really hope everyone who attended
enjoyed the night as much as I did, and
I’m already looking forward to next year!
President, IABC/Toronto
Dr. Catherine Zahn is this year’s
Communicator
of the Year!
IABC/Toronto’s annual Communicator of the Year (COTY)
Award recognizes a leader from the Greater Toronto Area
who demonstrates exceptional communication leadership
and has developed communication strategies that
contribute to the ongoing success of an organization.
On March 20, 2012 IABC/Toronto presented
Dr. Catherine Zahn, President and CEO of
the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
(CAMH), with the COTY Award at a special
breakfast held in her honour.
Dr. Zahn is a trailblazer in the field of mental
illness and addiction. Since becoming CEO
of CAMH in 2009, Dr. Zahn has introduced
many communication initiatives,
including a weekly blog named “Call Me
Catherine,” as well as popular Town Hall
meetings with CAMH staff. She has used
her skills in leadership and communication
to transform the organization, substantially
raising awareness of mental health issues
throughout Canada.
Her strength as a communicator makes her
much sought after by the media. Her interviews
on CBC Radio’s Metro Morning and
her letters to the national newspapers have
continued to stimulate important public
debate. Dr. Zahn’s personal communications
on such sensitive topics as the banning of
the smoking in her hospital have won her
accolades for communications skills on the
international stage.
“She met all of the criteria of a leader who
understands the role communication plays,”
said Janet Comeau, ABC, Chair of the
COTY judging panel.
“This became very evident when we met
with her team. They not only told us about
her communication style and principles, but
were clearly delighted to work and support her
mandate. They told us about how Catherine
connects with everyone she encounters in
her work at a very personal level, and carries
her message consistently and effectively to
many audiences—whether patient, staff or
other business or government leaders.”
Dr. Zahn displayed her leadership skills
by delivering an inspiring—and at times
emotional—speech about connectivity and
effective communication, using the power
of imagery to illustrate her point.
“I believe that there’s much power in
communicating,” said Dr. Zahn. “I plan
to give you the little gift of five beautiful
images to take away and enjoy on this first
day of spring. The five beautiful things are
all about the connectivity that underpins
communication.”
These five underpinnings, according to
Dr. Zahn, happen on a biological, personal,
interpersonal, collective and spiritual level.
“If we draw on all levels of connectivity,
including using the natural construct of our
brain to its fullest; acquiring self knowledge
to deploy our whole selves; developing
meaningful human relationships; respecting
societal customs and beliefs; and attending
to the spiritual aspects of life; we can change
the world.”
of the Year by issuing an open call to members and
non-members to nominate a leader and provide a
rationale for their choice. The nominees are reviewed
by a panel of past IABC/Toronto presidents, who then
chooses the Communicator of the Year.
Integrated Marketing Communications
student
The IABC/Toronto Student of the Year
Award, presented at this year’s OVATION
Gala on May 30, 2012, recognizes a student
member each year who exhibits leadership
and excellence in communications and possess
creativity, strong writing skills and passion in
both academic and volunteer projects. Cawker’s
entry shined bright and it’s evident that she is
destined to go far in the communications field.
Understanding that the average consumer is
swamped with hundreds of advertisements
daily, Cawker explains how a Customer-
Based Brand Equity (CBBE) model can
help brands become more than just a name
to consumers. The model, represented as a
pyramid-shaped chart, has four distinct
levels of brand recognition.
The bottom level of the pyramid is Salience—
the basic knowledge of a brand, unaccompanied
by judgment or emotion. “At this level,
consumers have been hit six or seven times with
your brand name,” Cawker explains. “They know
the name—but that’s it. When companies
make mistakes with their branding strategy,
they can never climb higher than Salience.”
Brands can then ascend through Performance,
Imagery, Feelings and Judgments, before
achieving the ultimately-desired top level:
Resonance. “Hitting Resonance is all about
making the consumer feel that the brand is
an integral part of their lifestyle,” Cawker
says. “When a brand resonates with its target
[market], it stakes out and occupies a space in
the consumer’s mind.”
lets her
colours shine!
Conestoga College Integrated Marketing Communications student
Bethany Cawker answers the burning question of how a brand can
take its relationship a step further than just capturing the attention
of its target market, in her news release, “Consistency: The Key to
Brand Resonance.” Her release earned her the 2012 IABC/Toronto
Student of the Year award.
Having compiled integrated marketing communications
plans for several clients in the
Kitchener-Waterloo area, Cawker noticed a
relationship between a company’s lack of
brand consistency and a lack of traffic and
interaction on its social media channels.
“For some reason, companies think it’s
permissible to use different titles for their
social media channels—this is a seemingly
minor issue, but it confuses consumers. I would
not call my company B.E.Cawker Inc. on
Facebook and then name my YouTube
channel Cawker Solutions Inc.”
After talking with her clients, Cawker discovered
that most of them assumed their
consumers would “care enough” to find them.
“These types of assumptions are roadblocks to
brand resonance,” says Cawker. “If no one can
find your brand, no one will learn more about
it, and no one will talk about it.”
Cawker further put her social media skills to use
as IABC/Toronto’s Member Communications
and Social Media Coordinator. “[My role]
perfectly complemented my academic studies;
while I learned about social media communications
at school, IABC/Toronto gave me
the opportunity to implement what I had
learned on its Facebook, Twitter and
LinkedIn platforms,” said Cawker.
Now holding both an Integrated Marketing
Communications post-graduate certificate
and an Honours B.A. in English from York
University, Cawker looks forward to putting
her newly acquired experience in the creation
and implementation of customer-oriented marketing
communications plans. And she hopes to make a splash
in the communications world and provide companies with
fresh yet practical solutions to branding and customer
retention issues. She is confident that accelerating a brand’s
ascension to the resonance level of the CBBE pyramid
will result in its long-term success and notoriety.
“I am deeply honoured to be recognized as IABC/Toronto’s
2012 Student of the Year. As a graduate looking for a
career in communications, I value this recognition for its
prestige, but also because it confirms that I have learned
integral skills and strategies from both my volunteering
and academic work that will allow me to truly make a
difference in the communications field.”
Bethany’s Quick Tips for Achieving Brand Resonance:
Don’t underestimate the amount of emotion people
invest in brands. Attach a personality or emotion
to your brand that your target can relate to.
Keep visual brand elements simple and transferable.
Every single visual element should reflect your
brand’s values.
Respond – quickly—to comments, negative or
positive, via social media and email. Formulate
a social media contingency plan to deal with
“crisis-level” posts tactfully.
Ask your consumers questions. Marketing is now
consumer-driven—your consumers want to have
a hand in the makeup of your brand.
Remember – consistency is key. Do what works,
and do it often.
Inspiring!
Friends For Life
wins The Bobbie Resnick
Philanthropy Award
Friends For Life started seven years ago from a vow
between two friends to do something to support those
diagnosed with cancer or cystic fibrosis. Since then it
has established its credibility through top-notch
communications. That’s now being recognized with
the Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy Award.
Erick Bauer and Steve Cameron were your typical teenage friends in middle
school. But when Steve was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
in high school, their personal circumstances brought them even closer
together. Erick had been diagnosed at a young age with cystic fibrosis, a
common fatal genetic disease that affects one out of every 3,600 Canadians.
Their shared experience facing devastating diseases in and out of the
hospital strengthened their bond. It led them to make a vow to put their
heads together and do something for the people in the two communities
that had done so much for them.
“That’s how the idea for Friends For Life was born,” says Erick. “It started
out just as a small event at a pub with friends and family that raised a
small amount of money but it proved to us that we could do something
and touch the lives of people affected by both cancer and cystic fibrosis.”
Erick and Steve’s personal story inspired the Friends For Life brand and
through it, they are now inspiring many other young professionals to give
back to the community as well as raising awareness for both cancer
and the lesser known cystic fibrosis. It’s for this work that Friends For
Life was honoured with the Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy Award at the
2012 IABC/Toronto OVATION Awards.
The Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy Award is handed out annually to
professional communicators who demonstrate leadership and dedication,
while making a positive contribution to the profession and the community.
The volunteer team at Friends For Life certainly fits that bill.
“The brand that we’ve created and the people that we’ve inspired over the
last seven years is what gets me excited,” says Erick. “But what really
inspires me is how we’ve been able educate people on what cystic fibrosis
is—seven years on I really feel that we’ve been able to get that message
out to thousands and thousands of people.”
Through entirely volunteer efforts, the Friends For Life Foundation has
grown significantly since it began. Each year it hosts an annual gala event
Bobbie Resnick, right, presents the Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy Award
to the Friends for Life Foundation’s Stefanie Calli and Erick Bauer.
in June as well as a variety of smaller events and other activities
throughout the year. In total, they have raised over $300,000 for
Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the Oncology Unit at SickKids Hospital.
Excellent communications has been key to their success.
“From the get-go, we’ve used communications, public relations and
media relations to create a brand for what we’re doing and to create
legitimacy,” says Erick. “This in turn allowed us to approach corporate
sponsors and develop relationships with people who may have been
hesitant to partner with us if we didn’t have such a strong reputation.”
Going forward, Friends For Life intends to continue to strengthen its
brand in pursuit of its goals. And those goals are no small matter.
“We’re aiming to raise $500,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the
Oncology Unit at SickKids Hospital by our ten-year anniversary,” says
Erick. And given how much they’ve accomplished so far, you just have
to think that they are going to do it.
OVATION AWARDS
2012 OVATION AWARDS
JUDGES
The 2012 OVATION Awards marked a
new era—a paperless one—as the
entire awards process was done using
a new online entry system.
IABC/Toronto is one of only a handful of chapters to adopt an online entry
system for its awards program, and as the largest IABC chapter in the world,
it just makes sense.
“We’re a unique chapter, with more than 1,800 members and more than
200 award submissions,” says Cyrus Mavalwala, ABC, and Vice President,
Accreditation & Standards of IABC/Toronto. This new online system helped
solve the challenge of physically getting all the judges in one location at the
same time. In fact, the ability to judge remotely allowed more senior and
accredited judges to participate in the process.
“Moving totally online means entrants don’t have to courier or mail out
anything—it’s nice, neat, quick. Deadlines always approach faster than you
hope, so if you can simply upload documents versus having to mail items,
then it makes the process a little faster,” says Mavalwala.
2012 was a record-breaking year for the OVATION Awards, with more awards
submissions and more awards given than any previous year. The online
entry system made it easier and more efficient—both for the entrants and
for the judges.
“I’ve helped to judge the OVATION Awards program for many years and
I’ve always found the experience to be professionally rewarding and loads of
fun. This year’s innovation of the online system made it even better. I found
it afforded me more time to review submissions, often when it was convenient
to me, and allowed me to fashion written evaluations that were more
comprehensive and constructive,” says John Cappelletti, ABC and one of the
judges of the 2012 OVATION Awards.
Comments from entrants included, “Online submission was perfect!”
and “Keep the online process. It’s much easier/faster to submit with
looming deadlines.”
Of course, with any new IT initiative there are always challenges. Getting the
software to work the way you want it to work isn’t always a seamless process,
but in the end, the extra effort was well worth it, with entrants and judges
alike happy with the new system. Hopefully, next year will be even better.
win. In the event of a tie, the winner is
decided by the median of score of the
Excellence awards.
and were announced for the first time at
the 2012 OVATION Awards Gala.
