The Final Word: Celebrating<br />

the 2009 OVATION Awards<br />

Winners at the 2009 OVATION Awards prove that “Word Gets<br />

Around” when creative strategies are matched with communications<br />

excellence. The winning programs rose above the noise, delivered<br />

their messages and received well-deserved recognition. This<br />

year saw a record number of OVATION entries and tremendous<br />

participation in the People’s Choice Award vote, confirming that<br />

motivation and vision can generate powerful results in a fiercely<br />

competitive communications industry. In total, 55 awards were<br />

handed out. The awards gala was once again sold out thanks to<br />

the continuous support of the communications community.<br />

Toronto Hydro-Electric System was one of<br />

the night’s big winners as it walked away with<br />

the People’s Choice Award as selected by the<br />

IABC/Toronto membership in an online poll.<br />

In addition to the People’s Choice Award,<br />

its team received two Awards of Excellence<br />

and one Award of Merit in Communication<br />

Management for their outstanding campaign,<br />

“Take a Load Off Toronto.” The goal of this<br />

integrated, multi-media campaign was to<br />

encourage consumers to adopt energy-saving<br />

behaviours such as the use of clotheslines.<br />

The capacity and power of a consumerdriven<br />

campaign and its focus on market<br />

transformation proved a brilliant measure<br />

for engagement and widespread education.<br />

“[The campaign] matches government,<br />

corporate and consumer interests to save<br />

both energy and money for everyone’s<br />

advantage. The team did an excellent job<br />

of meeting Hydro’s need for timely and<br />

effective programming,” the OVATION<br />

judges noted.<br />

Strategic Objectives led the large Public<br />

Relations agencies with three Awards of<br />

Excellence in Communication Management<br />

and one Award of Merit in Communication<br />

Creative. The award-winning campaigns,<br />

which received recognition included “40th<br />

Anniversary of the Caramilk Secret,” “The<br />

Johnnie Walker Pillars of Responsibility,”<br />

“New Stride Canadian Brand Launch” and<br />

“The Rollout of New Pink Cashmere.”<br />

Strategic Objectives’ Canadian brand<br />

launch for Stride Gum featured two Stride<br />

representatives playing ping-pong with<br />

Canadians on a road trip across Canada,<br />

share increases that surpassed all forecasts. “It is an incredible honour<br />

to be recognized by IABC/Toronto as all of the campaigns were unique<br />

unto themselves and all achieved measurable objectives. Creativity<br />

and innovation allows a campaign to be memorable not only from a<br />

PR point of view, but from a success point of view,” says Judy Lewis,<br />

co-founder and executive vice-president of Strategic Objectives.<br />

In addition to well-established awards, new categories made their<br />

debut in this year’s competition. “The Allstream Global Forum: An<br />

Evening with Steve Forbes” won the inaugural Award of Excellence in<br />

Communication Management in the Customer Relations category.<br />

Designed to distinguish the company from its competitors, strengthen<br />

customer relationships and create demand for business solutions, the<br />

project demonstrated the strategic use of seminar selling in order to<br />

generate outstanding sales results. “Our team is very honoured to be<br />

recognized with this award as it demonstrates the in-house expertise<br />

at Allstream to support our team and generate sales results,” says<br />

Christine E. Gerritse, senior manager of Marketing Communications<br />

at Allstream.<br />

The programs designed by this year’s winners demonstrate the<br />

remarkable passion, dedication and expertise that exemplify the<br />

communications profession as one capable of measurable results and<br />

prompting beneficial change. While the changing communications<br />

landscape brings new challenges, it also creates opportunities for<br />

strategic and innovative communication with stakeholders in a<br />

competitive market. This year’s entries represent the wide scope of<br />

capabilities from the area’s most notable communicators and attests<br />

to the intense drive to deliver messages and be heard.<br />

This year’s OVATION gala was held at the Liberty Grand on May 28<br />

and was sponsored by News Canada, Toronto Hydro-Electric System,<br />

The Canadian Press Images, MAVERICK Public Relations and<br />

Fusion Design Group.<br />

Jess Bennett, 2009 IABC/Toronto MAVERICK PR Student of the Year<br />

The IABC/Toronto MAVERICK PR Student of the Year award is presented annually to a student<br />

who demonstrates exceptional communications skills and exceptional creativity. Award judge and<br />

President of MAVERICK PR, Julie Rusciolelli, presented this year’s award to Jess Bennett.<br />

Jess is a graduate of Seneca College’s Corporate Communication program and the Master of<br />

Professional Communication program from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. She<br />

has already made a name for herself in social media with her blog titled “Sift, Dust & Toss”<br />

about her passion for food, which is definitely worth the read.<br />

Judges were impressed with Jess’ submission stating, “While it was difficult to select a winner from<br />

the record breaking number of submissions this year, we felt that Jess’ creativity, commitment to<br />

excellence and strong leadership made her stand out from the rest.”<br />

To be considered for this award, entrants were required to submit a news release on how they plan<br />

to make an impact on the future practice of communications and submit one writing sample. Jess’<br />

news release titled “Engagement Announcement: Public Relations to Wed Social Media” caught<br />

the judges’ attention immediately. The release stated that, “Social media has become a buzz word,<br />

but communicators must remember that it is a tactic fitting into a greater strategy.”<br />

And the Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy<br />

award goes to... APEX Public Relations<br />

The 2009 Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy award was presented<br />

to APEX Public Relations Inc. for its entry “Charity Starts at<br />

the Office – Creating On Your Bike!” Bobbie Resnick, ABC,<br />

APR, MC, IABC Fellow, presented the prestigious award to<br />

Pat McNamara, APR, Tracey Bochner, APR, Ellen Leesti<br />

and Scott MacFadyen.<br />

On Your Bike! (OYB!) is a not-for-profit foundation that collects second-hand bicycles<br />

to repair and donate to disadvantaged children throughout Toronto. According to<br />

award judges, the campaign was “A simple but very powerful idea. The project offers<br />

employees a great opportunity to become involved and make a very meaningful<br />

contribution to the community.” This is a true philanthropic effort, which will<br />

continue to give back for years to come.<br />

Looking to the future, OYB! has organized many successful bike drives. As APEX<br />

celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, the agency made a special $10,000 donation<br />

to purchase new bikes to be distributed through the organization this year.<br />
