A stimulated Brillouin scattering sensor<br />
system with reflector at the end of test fiber<br />
is proposed and analyzed. A reflector same<br />
as a mirror for the reflection of pump and<br />
prove lights or FBG(fiber Bragg grating) for<br />
that of prove light only are compared. The<br />
method to increase the performance is<br />
introduced.<br />

A theoretical study about Brillouin optical<br />
time-domain analysis (BOTDA) using two<br />
pulse lasers is performed. Even though a<br />
point detection is made for a pump pulse<br />
period, the dynamic range performance of<br />
BOTDA using two pulse lasers is approximately<br />
5dB more than that using a pulse<br />
and a CW laser.<br />

The coupling and propagation characteristics<br />
of the multi-to-single mode fiber converter<br />
has been investigated using the beam<br />
propagation method. The core diameters of<br />
thicker end and thinner end are assumed to<br />
be 50 μm and 8μm, respectively. The effect<br />
of lateral misalignments and optical beam<br />
size on the coupling efficiency has been<br />
analyzed. The numerical analysis shows<br />
that the device improve the lateral misalignment<br />
tolerance compared to straight single<br />
mode fiber.<br />

We proposed a polynomial fitting algorithm<br />
with Fabry-Perot ITU filter for the nonlinear<br />
compensation in a MEMS tunable wavelength<br />
filter. From experimental results, the<br />
proposed method has shown constant<br />
accuracy in FBG sensor system without<br />
scanning range of MEMS filter, reducing<br />
linearity error between the polynomial fitted<br />
FBG sensors and reference thermocouple<br />
down to ~ 0.176 %.<br />

A fiber-optic strain sensor was proposed by<br />
using a hybrid laser interferometer, a<br />
Michelson and a Mach-Zehnder combined.<br />
For the demodulation of strain, we used<br />
quadrature sampling with zero-crossing<br />
triggers and an accurate and fast phase<br />
demodulation is accomplished without parameter<br />
control of reference trigger.<br />

Lensed fibers offer a convenient way to<br />
improve coupling between optical fibers<br />
and waveguide devices, laser diodes or<br />
photo diodes. A pair of optic fibers can be<br />
optically coupled by forming lenses at the<br />
ends of the optical fibers and positioning<br />
the lenses substantially in alignment and at<br />
approximately a predetermined spacing. In<br />
this paper, manufactured lensed fiber using<br />
arc discharge method. The coupling efficiency<br />
and alignment/fabrication for optical transceiver<br />
module to lensed fiber coupling is also<br />
measured.<br />

This study is an application field by using<br />
optical fiber. The system to measure sBs<br />
from optical fiber is designed, So it can be<br />
used as a temperature sensor. by using<br />
frequency shift, resulting from temperature<br />
changes. the frequency shift is checked by<br />
changing temperature from 25℃ to 69℃<br />
with chamber in the laboratory and using<br />
40Km optical fiber. is's also measured by<br />
varying the length of optical fiber The<br />
program to do the real-time monitoring and<br />
analyze the measured data is created to find<br />
accurate frequency. It can be used as an<br />
optical fiber sensor, which is capable of<br />
measuring temperature and distance by<br />

Semiconductor nanocrystals (Quantum dots)<br />
have many unique electronic and optical<br />
properties induced by the quantum confinement<br />
effects when the size of nanocrystals<br />
is comparable or smaller than the<br />
Bohr exciton radii. Unlike II-VI semiconductor<br />
QDs, those made of IV-VI lead chalcogenides<br />
such as PbS, PbSe and PbTe, have narrow<br />
bandgap energies and large exciton Bohr<br />
radii. Thus, this type of quantum dots is<br />
important for the fundamental study of<br />
strong quantum confinement effect, which<br />
can not be realized by other quantum dots<br />
made of wide bandgap semiconductors.<br />
Furthermore, effective bandgap can be tuned<br />
from Mid-IR to visible range. Thus, quantum<br />
dots made of lead chalcogenides have<br />
potentials for tunable IR-lasers, broadband<br />
amplifiers and solar cells. This works reports<br />
optical properties and potential applications<br />
of lead chalcogenide quantum dots embedded<br />
in glasses. Quantum dots were precipitated<br />
through heat-treatment, and its size was<br />
controlled by changing the heat-treatment<br />
condition such as heat-treatment temperature<br />
and time. Optical properties of lead chalcogenide<br />
quantum dots thus prepared were<br />
characterized by absorption and luminescence<br />
spectroscopy. Tunable absorption and emission<br />
between 1~2 μm was achieved, and full<br />
width of half maximum (FWHM) intensity<br />
was of >150 nm. Potentials for broadband<br />
optical amplification will be discussed.<br />

metal nano-particles in the core was manufactured<br />
using TEOS as a reduction agent<br />
during MCVD with solution doping process.<br />
The formation of Au metal nano-particles<br />
with the average size of 8 nm in the perform<br />
was confirmed by TEM analysis. The absorption<br />
band at 350~550nm<br />
and the peak<br />
at 665nm<br />
are attributed to the Au ions and<br />
Au metal nano-particles present in the<br />
perform, respectively.<br />

Optical fiber doped with Au nano-particles<br />
was manufactured by using TEOS as a<br />
reduction agent in Au containing doping<br />
solution during MCVD process. The absorption<br />
peak appeared at 490 nm was attributed to<br />
the surface plasmon resonance of the<br />
incorporated Au nano-particles in the core,<br />
and the nonlinear refractive index, n2, of the<br />
fiber was found to be 2.96 ~1.27×10-16<br />
m2/W at the pump power from 12 to 100<br />
mW.<br />

The PQR laser with ultra-low threshold<br />
current and sharp discrete multei-mode<br />
properties can outdo conventional LEDs.<br />
We have confirmed many advantages of low<br />
injection, high efficiency, high frequency<br />
PQR arrays over the conventional LEDs. We<br />
also extended our PQR work to blue wavelength<br />
regions. To be specific, we fabricated<br />
blue PQR arrays using the GaN wafer with<br />
N type AlGaN/GaN DBRs for higher reflectivity.<br />
The present preliminary studies sere<br />
encouraginginthatthebluePQRregionis<br />
still much brighter than the LED background<br />
region. We will soon get more inproved<br />
characteristics if we fabricate blue PQRs<br />
from GaN wafer with properly grown DBRs<br />
and without sapphire substrate.<br />
