The temperature sensitivity of dB/dT of<br />
different types of PMFs with side holes was<br />
measured using Sagnac loop interferometer.<br />
The thermal expansion coefficient can be<br />
varied by controlling the amount of Ge-doped<br />
in the core region. Using this method,<br />
dB/dT could be made higher than that of<br />
standard PMFs (~10-8/ o C) or comparable<br />
to that of standard PCFs (~10-9/ o C).<br />

We demonstrate enhanced Kerr nonlinear<br />
effects in tapered As2Se3 chalcogenide<br />
fiber. We taper the fiber to sub-wavelength<br />
waist diameter of 1.2 μm and observe<br />
enhanced nonlinearity of 63,600 /W/km,<br />
which is about 40,000 times larger than in<br />
standard single-mode fiber due to the 400<br />
times larger n2 and almost 100 times<br />
smaller effective mode area.<br />

We propose an intensity-based optical<br />
sensor for measurement of both static and<br />
dynamic strain using a fiber Bragg grating<br />
(FBG) and a long-period grating (LPG) pair.<br />
In this system, the center-wavelength shift<br />
was measured in voltage changes by using<br />
a photodetector. The result shows linear<br />
relationship between the strain and the<br />
measured voltage. We will also show measurement<br />
results of 100-Hz dynamic strain<br />
sensing.<br />

We designed a photonic crystal enhanced<br />
infrared (IR) filter, which has a narrow<br />
bandpass characteristic, for the detection<br />
of chemical gas such as CO2. The filter<br />
consists of an array of air holes etched into<br />
a dielectric and a periodically perforated<br />
metallic thin film on the silicon substrate.<br />
The transmittance and reflectance for the<br />
structures with square and hexagonal lattices<br />
were calculated by using the finite-difference<br />
time-domain (FDTD) method and we confirmed<br />
the filter characteristics of the structures.<br />

In this work, we proposed a compact<br />

photonic crystal device with point defects.<br />
The proposed device was designed by<br />
utilizing the plane wave expansion method<br />
and characterized with FDTD method. Optimally<br />
designed triplexer showed the extinction<br />
ratios of -17.8dB for 1.31um, -14.4dB for<br />
1.49um and -15.9dB for 1.55um, respectively.<br />

We propose and demonstrate a photonic<br />
crystal optical group delay device, in which<br />
two dimensional photonic crystal line defect<br />
waveguide with chirped hole, induces sequential<br />
optical group delays for time-spreading<br />
/wavelength-hopping optical code division<br />
multiple access (O-CDMA). When a short<br />
pulse signal with a wide spectrum comes<br />
into this device, the guided light is localized<br />
at specific position depending on wavelength.<br />
This concept is suitable to realize a pulse<br />
waveform synthesizer and an en/decoder<br />
for time-spreading/wavelength-hopping O-<br />
CDMA. We have confirmed that this device<br />
