Wasatch Mountain Club Wilderness Navigation Class near Salt Lake City, Utah Find your way with GPS, map and compass Saturday October 8, 2011 Learn to use a GPS, topographic map and compass in a practical, hands-on course. In this one-day class for hikers, backpackers, backcountry skiers and similar wilderness users you will learn by the interactive problemsolving method using realistic situations in an outdoor setting at the beautiful, historic Wasatch Mountain Club lodge at Brighton, Utah. The class will teach you how to use the GPS, map and compass individually or in any combination. You will learn what each tool can do and its limitations. In this class you will learn to: • find the coordinates of your current position with a GPS receiver • find the position on a topographic map of given UTM coordinates • use map and compass to find a good route to a GPS waypoint • read other useful information from the map What previous students said about this class: “The biggest light to come on for me is to use all three tools (map, compass & GPS) together” “The time and expense were definitely justified” “I found the class very useful, and the time very very well spent” Cost: $75 per student. Each student will receive a textbook, USGS topo map of the Brighton area and two map tools plus a full day of instruction and practice.
