Birrong's BEAUT!
It’s official! Birrong Bowling and Sports Club has joined
the club. Final regulatory requirements have been met for
the amalgamation of the club into the Bankstown Sports group.
Since April 28, the club has been renamed
Birrong Sports Club and members of
Bankstown Sports and its affiliated clubs
automatically have membership to Birrong
Sports, and vice versa.
Birrong Sports has three bowling greens,
a bistro, functions area, a TAB and a sports
lounge. You can also eat and drink outside in
the wonderful alfresco areas with views across
the manicured greens and through to the
parklands. A courtesy bus runs from Thursday
to Sunday.
The club has just over 1800 members and
also supports a number of local sports groups
including netball, golf, darts, soccer, baseball,
basketball and Oztag. See story on page 46.
The immediate change to the club will be in
the dining offering, which will be taken over
by La Piazza’s Mario Libertini (pictured right).
Mario is revamping the eatery to provide
good quality, simple Italian-influenced meals.
It will be called The Italian Bistro – think
pizza and pasta – but will also feature
super fresh hamburgers, ribs, seafood
baskets and schnitzel.
Pizza will soon be on the menu, to eat-in and
takeaway, so a new pizza oven will be installed
in July. Ordering takeaway pizza which meets
the high standards found at La Piazza will
be a real treat for locals. The pizza menu will
include the best traditional styles around.
Members of both clubs voted unanimously
for the amalgamation and Bankstown Sports
Assistant Secretary/Manager Mark Condi feels
it’s a great win-win for both parties.
“Birrong can continue to function as a club,
while our goal of having another local venue is
achieved. There are many synergies between
the clubs and, in fact, about 95 per cent of
Birrong’s members are already members here
at Bankstown,” Mr Condi says.
Existing staff are being retained and offered
extra training and some Bankstown Sports
staff will rotate through Birrong too.
“We are confident this amalgamation will be
beneficial for both clubs in the future,” Mr
Condi says.
