"Serious
concern hangs
over all of us
in the clubs'
industry, with
the pokie
reform plan
unveiled by
independent
MP, Andrew
Wilkie."
Our amalgamation with Birrong Bowling & Sports
Club was completed on the 28th April 2011. The new
entity will be referred to as Birrong Sports Club from
now on. We believe the club holds great promise and
we welcome this venue and all of its members into the
Bankstown Sports family.
You will see new signage for the club and in the next
few weeks we will complete renovations on the kitchen
and dining facility. We have asked Mario Libertini, of La
Piazza fame, to take over the restaurant and very soon
you will see it reopen as “The Italian Bistro”. Mario will
serve both an Italian and modern Australian cuisine.
We believe there is a wonderful community in and
around Birrong and we have no doubt that they will
embrace the club and the bistro. Mario will produce
a variety of quality dishes, to eat in or take away, at an
affordable price, all available on the doorstep of the
local community.
In our Baulkham Hills club, the builders are busy
finishing an extension to the outdoor area and
children’s play area, complete with special equipment.
This facility has been made possible by a generous
donation from the Baulkham Hills Junior Sports and
Social Club. This gesture bears testimony to the fact
that the local community have adopted Baulkham
Hills Sports and feel a sense of ownership. We intend
on doing a small opening to acknowledge the Junior
Sports and Social Club, in June. We hope this addition
will bring even more people to this boutique club
which is still a hidden treasure in the Hills.
Shortly, we hope to have final approval on the
expansion of the Travelodge hotel that will double the
number of existing rooms. When this happens, you will
be interested to know that the foyer, porte-cochére
and the entrance to the car park from Mona Street will
come in for a major facelift. We intend making it easier
and more comfortable for you to enter the club, with
two staircases and a larger lift. We will also improve our
reception desk facility, for your convenience.
Serious concern hangs over all of us who are part of
the community clubs industry. The independent MP,
Andrew Wilkie, has unveiled his pokie reform plan. This
will require every recreational player who uses a poker
machine to register for a “Smartcard”. It will involve the
installation of technology linking each and every poker
machine in the country, a task that is estimated to cost
the industry $3 billion.
Community clubs have always taken a responsible
approach to gaming and have been supportive of
voluntary pre-commitment implemented locally at
each venue, rather than networked across the country.
On March 23, we attended a talk at the National Press
Club in Canberra. Peter Newell, OAM, President, Clubs
Australia presented our case in the presence of Federal
politicians and industry leaders. I would encourage you
to go to our website to listen to what Peter had to say
or read the story starting on page 6.
The following day, we paid our respects to people
who had served Australia or lost their lives in past
world wars, overseas engagements and international
peace efforts. As we moved through the exhibits and
dioramas at the War Memorial in Canberra, it was an
emotional experience to think of the conditions in
which our young men and women fought and worked
for freedom and the immense sacrifices they made.
We were overwhelmed with the sight of the 460
Squadron RAAF Avro Lancaster Bomber “G for George”.
The audio visual presentation that complemented the
exhibit gave a first-hand account of what it was like
on a bombing run, with fierce artillery fire. It was both
informative and thought-provoking, given the fact that
one of our former board directors, Pat Sullivan, was
a Lancaster Bomber pilot who actually flew sorties.
The War Memorial in Canberra is a must for any family
visiting the capital.
new area
Kids play safe in
A new outdoor play area for children at
Baulkham Hills Sports was on the verge of
completion as InTouch went to press.
The area enables people to dine outdoors
while their children play safely in a new
enclosed playground.
The latest renovations have been made
possible by a $90,000 donation from Baulkham
Hills Junior Sports and Social Club which is a
tribute to the local community’s support of the
club. A plaque acknowledging the generous
donation will be unveiled at the site.
The executive of the Junior Sports and Social
Club, Ross and Lynne Baker, Deseline and John
Binning and Bill and Dorothy Scott, have been
associated with Baulkham Hills Sports since the
club opened its doors in 1974.
“The original idea of our division was to
raise enough money to build a small separate
clubhouse for junior members – the children of
our members,” John Binning says.
The fundraising began in 1975, when a raffle
was held every Friday for five years. There were
other fundraisers too to build the pot to about
$100,000. The canny committee invested the
money and started to earn interest.
“As the years went by, particularly with the
periods of high interest rates – sometimes up
to 17 per cent – the lump sum grew,” John says.
“With the interest being earned we would
use it to treat the juniors to various monthly
activities, such as sailing, a trip to the movies
or AMF Bowling. In more recent times we have
thrown our annual Christmas party with prizes
and amusements which everyone, including
the grandparents, is invited to,” Deseline says.
Editorial
With the committee ageing and the idea of
a separate clubhouse well behind them, the
committee decided to commit the funds to the
playground. “To keep faith with the members
as we always said the money would be for the
children,” Deseline says. “This is about the best
thing we can do with the money. When the
club started it was a real family club and we
want it to remain a family club.”
“Bankstown Sports’ Board and Management
are very grateful for the generous donation,”
says Assistant Secretary/Manager Mark Condi.
“It’s three years since the first major
renovations were completed in April 2008,
costing $8.5 million. The developments
have made a massive transformation to the
club’s aesthetics and character and, in turn,
the members have really adopted the club,
growing from 3000 then to 10,000 today.”
The transformation has been so marked
some members even think the developments
have been the saviour of the club. Coupled
with its long history with sporting teams, the
club now offers a relaxed and family-friendly
environment with exciting new dinner and
entertainment options as well as professional
corporate and function facilities.
Coincidentally, both Bankstown Sports and
Baulkham Hills Sports had their beginnings
due to alignment with junior cricket clubs so
when the two amalgamated in 1999 there was
already a great synergy in place.
Baulkham Hills Sports began as one of the
oldest junior cricket clubs in NSW. Then called
the Baulkham Hills Cricket Club, it had its
beginnings in 1918.
Former Baulkham Hills club director
Rosemary McLellan says she once feared
Baulkham Hills Sports wouldn’t survive in a
changing world. “Left to its own devices I think
it wouldn’t have lasted,” she says. “Other small
clubs were hit hard by changes in legislation
and I think we would have been on that list if it
hadn’t been for the support (from Bankstown
Sports) and the renovations.”
Come along to the club and see what all
the fuss is about, Membership is just $12 and
entitles you to the More Rewards program –
accumulating reward points every time you
spend – as well as rewards on your birthday
and at Christmas.
Mandatory Pre-Commitment
A MISGUIDED PLAN
The management and staff at Bankstown Sports
family of clubs are very concerned about the campaign
for mandatory pre-commitment being driven by
Federal MP Andrew Wilkie. As a vital member of both
ClubsAustralia and ClubsNSW, Bankstown Sports is part
of the campaign to try to bring some sense to the table.
6 Bankstown Sports InTouch
In March, ClubsAustralia launched a
campaign at the National Press Club in
Canberra in response to the mandatory precommitment
plan for a national card system
which will force people to register themselves
and set a spending limit before they can play
poker machines.
ClubsAustralia CEO Peter Newell (OAM), in an
extended address, sought to put some facts on
the table about the pre-commitment proposal,
which, he says will have a dire impact on clubs
across Australia.
There are 4000 clubs in Australia with a
membership of 10.5 million. There are 90,000
people employed directly by clubs, countless
more suppliers to clubs (entertainers, food
and beverage suppliers, builders etc),
around 100,000 volunteers and hundreds of
communities who benefit from club support.
About five million people a year play
poker machines and of those, 2 per cent are
considered problem gamblers.
Mr Newell said the new system, scheduled to
start next year and be fully rolled out by 2014,
will require anyone who wants to play the
pokies to possess a “licence” to gamble.
This “card” containing your personal details
will be linked to a national grid covering every
poker machine in Australia, allowing
the Federal Government to track every bet.
“Big Brother in the extreme you might think,”
Mr Newell told the press club.
“With this intrusive device in place, players
would be able to set binding limits on
their expenditure, and if that limit were to
be reached, they would be compulsorily
prevented from playing a poker machine
probably for 24 hours at any one of the 5700
clubs and pubs across the country, as well
as casinos.
“The deal also provides for club and pub
patrons to be prevented from withdrawing
more than $250 a day of their own money
from an ATM. Inexplicably, this does not apply
to casinos.”
Mr Newell said there were three reasons
why this should not happen: Clubs and many
others say it will do little, if anything, to assist
the problem; the cost to implement it will drive
clubs to the wall resulting in closures and job
losses and in the longer term, there will be
devastating losses of revenue as recreational
gamblers walk away from clubs in the face of
this “licence to gamble” scenario.
“The proponent of this deal [MP Andrew
Wilkie] has said himself the revenue impact
would be up to 40 per cent.”
The Federal Government is seeking
agreement from the States to implement
the system but there is resistance as the
States have their own harm minimisation
measures in place.
Editorial
“...State and Territories across the country have
been reporting year-on-year a marked decline
in the prevalence of problem gambling,” Mr
Newell said. “In NSW, which hosts half the poker
machines in the country, problem gambling
rates halved from 0.8 per cent of the adult
population in 2006 to 0.4 per cent in 2008. The
Queensland Government has conducted four
surveys each of some 30,000 respondents over
seven years from 2001, and found a consistent
decline from 0.83 per cent to 0.37 per cent.”
“I am sure when they reached this agreement,
neither the Prime Minister nor the Member for
Denison [Andrew Wilkie] had the first idea of
what was involved...of the size and complexity
of the animal they had grabbed by the tail,” Mr
Newell said.
Here are some statistics to bring everyone
up to speed.
There are around 198,000 poker machines
in 5700 venues across Australia.
There are a dozen manufacturers and
the machines operate on different State or
Territory-approved systems which don’t “talk”
to each other.
The Government’s expert advice is that to
equip all the machines with the technological
capacity to accommodate an Australia-wide
scheme, that a quarter of machines might
be able to have a suitable software update; a
quarter would need a hardware and software
upgrade and half the total number of machines
(about 99,000) would have to be replaced at a
cost of about $3 billion.
There would need to be a national network
linking all States and Territories and a database
capable of tracking every player’s activity.
“ClubsAustralia has always been in favour
of targeted, sensible, effective and affordable
measures to further reduce problem gambling,”
Mr Newell said.
These include family interventions, education,
greater empowerment of counsellors and
improved counselling services, proper
research and ensuring that measures are not
experimental, venue staff training, tightening
regulation of the internet and a ban on betting
on credit.
Mr Newell said “The unfortunate consequence
of this obsession with mandatory
pre-commitment is that such other measures
that would further assist problem gamblers are
not receiving the attention and support they
deserve.”
ClubsAustralia would “support a system that is
voluntary for the player to use, is venue-based
and is affordable” and is currently driving trials
of voluntary pre-commitment, and investing
heavily in a multi-venue self exclusion scheme.
“We will not agree to a compulsory system
that is personally intrusive, deliberately
designed to ‘inconvenience’ players, and which
will be a turn-off to most ordinary, everyday
Australians who wish to spend some of their
recreational and entertainment time playing
poker machines.
“The Australian government should deal
meaningfully with industry and not simply
shove a politically expedient done deal in
our faces.”
Mr Newell described the internet as “the
elephant in the room”. “That woolly mammoth
is the internet and its lure to vulnerable people
who sit at home, often alone with no social
inclusion, and have the choice of two thousand
sites on which they can gamble on credit,
many with money they do not have.”
“According to Merrill Lynch, Australians spent
$840 million on online casinos and poker
in 2008...”
“This burgeoning industry is powering on –
with no taxes being returned to government,
very few jobs, and no regulation.”
“I for one am not prepared to see our
magnificent club industry destroyed on an
altar of political expediency – and I have no
doubt an enormous number of my fellow
Australians will feel the same way, let alone
the prospect of having government breathing
more heavily down our necks.”
An era of uncertainty
Bankstown Sports Assistant Secretary/Manager Mark Condi says an
enormous amount of uncertainty has been created by the Mandatory
Pre-Commitment proposals currently before the Federal Government.
“No cost-benefit analysis of this system has been done, there has been
no information about how much it will cost clubs and who will pay for
these new systems. At this stage, all we have been told from Mr Andrew
Wilkie MP is that there will be a massive reduction in revenue to clubs.
“We employ 550 people across all of our clubs – Bankstown Sports,
Bankstown Sports Bowls, Baulkham Hills Sports and now Birrong Sports.
On top of that are our suppliers who rely on our business for their ongoing
viability – from builders, to cake makers, to fishmongers, to entertainers.
“It is estimated that Bankstown Sports alone could lose $30 million or
more each year as a result of Mandatory Pre-Commitment.
“This uncertainty makes for a very difficult operating environment,
especially when we are constantly embarking on new works, such as the
Travelodge expansion or recent upgrades at our other clubs. We want to be
able to continue to support the sporting and other community groups that
rely on us as well as continue to provide excellent value for money for our
60,000 members.”
“The system discriminates against the social gambler, who may or may
not frequent a club and will not be able to use a gaming machine without
registering and receiving a card. But there is a great deal of uncertainty as
to whether it will really help problem gamblers.”
“The Productivity Commission recommended a trial of Mandatory Pre-
Commitment be carried out first to see if it works but this has been ignored,”
Mr Condi says.
In April, ClubsAustralia rolled out a campaign which provides many
ways of having your voice heard about this issue. Coasters are in the club
which can be filled in and dropped into bins. There is also a website you
can visit for more information or to sign an online petition. The address is:
www.its-unaustralian.com.au
“At the same time as
clubs are being attacked,
internet gambling continues
unchecked. If people are
playing machines in clubs,
there are responsible gaming
practices in place, whereas at
home, there are no such checks
and balances,” Mr
Condi says.
“ClubsNSW already has a
very good program in place
called the ClubSafe Program
and here at Bankstown Sports we
will soon have a system in place
where anyone who wants to
set a limit on what they spend,
can do so too.”
Funding
of over
$20,000
has
enormous
impact
for the
Australian
Youth
and Road
Trauma.
Bankstown Sports’ funding of $20,000 over
two years has had an enormous impact on
the Australian Youth and Road Trauma Forum,
helping it to “keep its head above water,”
according to Westmead Hospital Trauma
Coordinator, Stephanie Wilson. Funding
was made through the club’s Community
Development Support Expenditure scheme.
The forum, which has been held annually since
2006, has been attended by more than 46,000
Year 10-12 students from 275 schools all over
Sydney. Its aim is to provide students with an
education about the effects of car accidents on
people’s lives using graphic role-playing, real-life
scenarios and first-hand accounts from survivors
with brain and spinal injuries.
Last year, long-term sponsor NRMA withdrew its
financial support, leaving the organisers scratching
for funds. “Bankstown, and also Blacktown RSL
helped us out,” Ms Wilson says, as well as private
philanthropic group, The Balnaves Foundation.
“Fortunately we have now been promised funding
by the new Premier, Mr O’Farrell, so we are looking
forward to seeing that happen so we can take the
program out to rural schools.”
The one day program is staged three times at
ACER arena every year and the next forum will be
held this month from June 21 to 23.
Ms Wilson says students watch a crash scenario
in the morning, played out by actors and real
emergency services staff. “You can hear a pin
drop when that’s on,” she says.
Later, students hear personal accounts from
victims of crashes and later visit interactive
displays provided by a range of organisations
including Westmead Hospital Emergency
Department, Care Flight, Sydney-West Area
Health Service Organ and Tissue Donation, NSW
and St John’s Ambulance Services, NSW Police,
NSW Fire Brigade, NRMA Motoring & Services,
Community Drug Action Team, Australian Red
Cross, NSW Wheel Chair Sports Association and
Para Quad.
The afternoon session includes a demonstration
of wheelchair basketball involving students,
a speaker who has sustained a spinal injury, a
stopping distance demonstration followed by
a session with an organ donor recipient and an
organ donor family.
Students responding to a survey after the
2010 forum made the following comments:
“I am more aware of the ongoing impacts
of road accidents and how they can be easily
prevented.”;
“The impact of the forum was real and gave
me a insight into the pain and suffering that
could happen.”; “I now fully understand the
consequences of accidents on the road and
would never want to be placed in a situation
where I need to be taken by ambulance to
hospital or cut out of a car and I would never be
able to live with the burden of having someone’s
life lost because of me.”
According to a Youth and Road Trauma Forum
report, 73 young people aged 15-24 years were
killed on NSW roads last year – more than one
young person every week. Young people account
for 15 per cent of licensed drivers but represent
more than a third of road fatalities. A 17-yearold-driver
with a P1 licence is four times more
likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver
aged 26 or older. As well as those killed, another
14,842 were injured last year, many severely, with
profound consequences for themselves, their
families and the wider community.
An Access Economics study (Spinning Out of
Control: The economic cost of trauma in young
people in NSW. February 2011) estimated that in
2010, the cost from car crashes involving young
people in NSW was $1.5 billion dollars.
While many of the government services
volunteer their time, the cost of the annual
forum, which 12,000 students attend, is $230,000
per annum.
“This is the same cost to the health system for
just one young person being hospitalised as a
result of a car crash,” Ms Wilson says. “If just a few
of the thousands of students attending the forum
change their behavior and avoid a car crash, the
outcome will be worth it.”
The program has generated interest nationally
and internationally. South Australia has
developed its own forum following consultation
with the NSW organisers and a representative
from Victoria attended last year’s forum with the
view to starting a similar program there.
Maple Syrup glazed
slow cooked Lamb Shanks
Kaiserschmarrn
with Strawberry
Sauce
Sugar Pancake with Raisin
This Austrian pancake dessert - Kaiserschmarrn -
was first served to Emperor Franz Joseph I
around the turn of the century, but there
are several legends telling just how it was
developed. It is enriched with raisins and sugar,
making it a “Süβspeise” (sweet meal) fit for a king.
Kaiserschmarrn
Ingredients (Serves 3)
500ml milk
4 eggs (separated)
3 tbsp caster sugar
2 tbsp vanilla essence
2 tbsp rum
200g plain flour
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp raisin
Method
Prepare the base in a bowl. Mix the milk, egg
yolks, one third of the sugar, vanilla, rum and
flour together. In a separate bowl whisk the egg
whites, add one third of the sugar and continue
to whip until stiff but not dry. Fold the meringue
into the base. Melt half of the butter in a pan
then pour the dough into the pan, add the
raisins and fry like an omelette on low heat. Try
to turn after a while. Add the rest of the butter
and let it caramelise with the caster sugar. Tear
the Schmarrn into small pieces, serve with the
strawberry sauce and dust with icing sugar.
Strawberry Sauce
dash of dry white wine
half tbs lemon juice
Method
Combine all the ingredients in a medium
saucepan (keep a few strawberries for garnish).
Bring to boil. Cook for five minutes. Remove from
heat and cover with plastic wrap. Allow flavour
to infuse for 10 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a
blender and process until well incorporated. Add
some fresh chopped strawberries to the sauce.
Red Cabbage
Ingredients (Serves 8)
30g butter
1 large onion, sliced finely
1 red cabbage, sliced finely
200ml orange juice
100ml red wine
150g cranberry relish or jelly
1tsp ground cinnamon
Method
Melt the butter in a large pan. Seal the onions.
Add the red cabbage, orange juice, red wine
and cranberry. Season with salt, pepper and
cinnamon. Simmer till the cabbage is nearly
soft, stirring often, then add the diced apples.
Adjust seasoning to taste.
shallow dish. Lightly coat the shanks
with flour. Heat the oil in a large saucepan
over high heat. Brown the shanks for 2-3
minutes on each side. Transfer the shanks to
red wine, bay leaves and maple syrup to the
saucepan. Bring to the boil.
Cover roasting pan with foil. Roast the shanks
for 1 ¼ hours. Remove foil. Turn shanks and
Transfer the shanks to a platter. Strain the
stock through a sieve. Discard onions. Return
the butter to the mash. Beat with a spoon
until fluffy. Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg
and sprinkle with chives.
Staff excellence
recognised
There are about 550 staff members at Bankstown Sports and associated clubs - that's a lot of people
working hard for you and, in many cases, for their families.
Our staff members often start working here as a casual but then come onboard for the long haul
because of our unique family atmosphere and strong sense of team spirit – not to mention fun!
Bankstown Sports recently introduced a Staff Awards for Excellence Scheme in which three staff
members are rewarded each quarter in three categories: Customer Service, Initiative and High
Levels of Performance.
The awards are based on a points system, where managers and team leaders can recognise staff
members who are doing something extra. The process is also influenced by you, our members, and we
encourage you at every opportunity, to let us know how you feel about our customer service. You can
email the club at enquiry@bankstownsports.com or write a letter to: P.O. Box 213, Bankstown NSW 1885.
Your comments might result in your own reward.
Therese Meoushy
for Excellent
Customer Service
Therese has been with the club since 1999,
serving patrons in Greenfield Station Bistro.
She regards the club as her second family:
“I have my family at home and when I go to work
I have my family there. I feel so comfortable and I
really like working with people, it’s in my nature,”
she says.
Her managers’ comments included, “Therese
always goes out of her way to make sure she
pleases the patrons. For example, if a patron
wants boiled rice when there is only fried rice,
she will put it on for them.
“When faced with a complaint, her calm,
polite and professional manner defused the
situation and resolved the complaint quickly and
efficiently.”
Therese was enormously surprised and very
grateful for her award. “To be recognised by my
boss but also by the biggest bosses in the club, I
felt so special,” she says.
“Then the people I work with also were so kind
and said ‘you deserve it’ – that made it feel extra
good. I really felt appreciated.”
Rebecca Auava
for HIGH LEVELS
OF PERFORMANCE
Rebecca is an all-rounder, working between
the bar, gaming area and TAB. She also has a
certificate in mentoring and trains staff. She has
been with the club since November 2007.
Rebecca says she really enjoys her work. “Each
day is different giving you a different experience,
and as it is such a big place you are able to make
a lot of friends on the way. The club also provides
avenues to get ahead and I have completed my
Certificate 3 in hospitality. The club is also a good
place where you can enjoy yourself.”
Rebecca won the award for always being
friendly and polite to customers and going out
of her way to provide great customer service.
Her managers noted: “Rebecca’s workload is
awesome as you will never see her not doing
anything. She is only too happy to help others in
need. Every aspect of her work is completed at a
very high level.”
Rebecca says she was really happy to have won
the award: “The recognition of your hard work
and efforts encourages you to keep working well.”
Anthony Matak
for INITIATIVE
Anthony has been with Bankstown Sports for
about five years, is a livewire and loves interacting
with the public. He came across from Bankstown
Sports Bowls club.
He works in both the bar and gaming areas,
serving drinks and making himself useful
wherever he can. He likes working at the club
because of its friendly atmosphere. “The staff
are great and there’s a diverse culture here too,”
he says.
Another all-rounder, Anthony “can always be
trusted to give 100 per cent to any task”, say his
managers. “And takes it upon himself to realise
what needs to be done without a team leader
asking him to.” He was also found to be willing
to help all staff members.
Anthony says he was "surprised and
a bit shocked" to receive the award but,
ultimately “very happy about it. It’s good to
be recognised for your hard efforts,” he says.
He is looking forward to taking advantage
of his adventure prize.
Kim Armit
for EXCELLENT
CUSTOMER SERVICE
AT BAULKHAM HILLS
Kim is Baulkham Hills Sports’ front
receptionist and has been with the club for
18 years. She meets and greets members and
their guests, handles phone inquiries,
bookings and any other job that needs doing.
Apart from being close to home, Kim says
the club is “a friendly environment with
modern facilities and amenities. I really enjoy
the opportunity to meet a lot of people. I think I
have built a good rapport with a lot of regulars.”
Kim’s managers say, “Nothing is ever a
problem for Kim. When the membership
system was down recently, she kept customers
informed and ensured they were happy at a
stressful time. When the system was restored
she quickly processed the memberships
and sent them out. She is always friendly
and helps out whenever she can.”
Kim says she is very happy with the
award. “I've never experienced this type of
recognition before so it was a pleasant and
much appreciated surprise. It just makes
one feel really good knowing others have
recognised my efforts.”
Birrong's BEAUT!
It’s official! Birrong Bowling and Sports Club has joined
the club. Final regulatory requirements have been met for
the amalgamation of the club into the Bankstown Sports group.
Since April 28, the club has been renamed
Birrong Sports Club and members of
Bankstown Sports and its affiliated clubs
automatically have membership to Birrong
Sports, and vice versa.
Birrong Sports has three bowling greens,
a bistro, functions area, a TAB and a sports
lounge. You can also eat and drink outside in
the wonderful alfresco areas with views across
the manicured greens and through to the
parklands. A courtesy bus runs from Thursday
to Sunday.
The club has just over 1800 members and
also supports a number of local sports groups
including netball, golf, darts, soccer, baseball,
basketball and Oztag. See story on page 46.
The immediate change to the club will be in
the dining offering, which will be taken over
by La Piazza’s Mario Libertini (pictured right).
Mario is revamping the eatery to provide
good quality, simple Italian-influenced meals.
It will be called The Italian Bistro – think
pizza and pasta – but will also feature
super fresh hamburgers, ribs, seafood
baskets and schnitzel.
Pizza will soon be on the menu, to eat-in and
takeaway, so a new pizza oven will be installed
in July. Ordering takeaway pizza which meets
the high standards found at La Piazza will
be a real treat for locals. The pizza menu will
include the best traditional styles around.
Members of both clubs voted unanimously
for the amalgamation and Bankstown Sports
Assistant Secretary/Manager Mark Condi feels
it’s a great win-win for both parties.
“Birrong can continue to function as a club,
while our goal of having another local venue is
achieved. There are many synergies between
the clubs and, in fact, about 95 per cent of
Birrong’s members are already members here
at Bankstown,” Mr Condi says.
Existing staff are being retained and offered
extra training and some Bankstown Sports
staff will rotate through Birrong too.
“We are confident this amalgamation will be
beneficial for both clubs in the future,” Mr
Condi says.
Why not head over to Birrong Sports and
give it your support. It’s on the corner of
Rodd Street and Gascoigne Road, Birrong
“Your new
you all to drop
the club has
to offer.”
Dear Members,
Bankstown Sports Junior Rugby League Club
now has a team in the Bundy Cup, with the
home ground at The Crest. The Canterbury S.G.
Ball and Harold Mathews games and NSW Cup,
Toyota Cup also feature at The Crest. The St
John’s Eagles have taken the place of the Bulls
in the Bundy Cup.
In May, Glenn Turner was once again playing
hockey for Australia in the Azlan Shah Cup
in Malaysia. As InTouch went to print, the
Kookaburras were in joint second place
on the table with India (with Britain in first
place), having won two of its three matches
so far. Glenn has been a pivotal member of
the Australian squad, scoring 37 goals in 50
international matches. He still finds time to
pass on his knowledge, experience and skills
to Bankstown Hockey Junior members and is a
great example of the spirit of the club.
The Staff versus Managers Cricket Match
was played in recent weeks. The Managers’
team won, just scraping in, with an over and
two balls to spare. Unfortunately, the annual
Past versus Present Bankstown Grade Cricket
Club Match on Memorial Oval in April was
washed out.
Rugby League sadly lost one of its finest
players when Mohammed Yatim died tragically
in a car accident in mid-April. Our thoughts are
with his family, friends and club mates.
Your new venue, Birrong Sports Club, officially
amalgamated with Bankstown Sports on April
28. It’s exciting to have such a wonderful club
join the Bankstown Sports family and I invite
you all to drop in to see what the club has to
offer. You can read more on pages 39, 40 and 41.
The women’s cricket club’s first grade team
continues to dominate the Sydney Women’s
Cricket competition, winning for the fourth
year in a row. A special congratulations to
them and to Sharron Milanta for making the
Australian Women’s Cricket Squad.
The golf club lost a long-time member & past
president, Dennis Fulerton, who was farewelled
by family and friends on April 29. Dennis was a
likable larrikin who will be dearly missed.
I recently visited the Bankstown Sports Little
Athletics Club to present awards to some
young athletes. Bankstown Sports Little A’s is
an efficiently run club, thanks to the volunteers
who stayed at the club long after the children
had progressed through the age groups.
The children are a credit to their parents
and club. Little A’s is a wonderful sport for
children to be involved in, it’s great for fitness
and gets the kids outdoors and away from the
television or computer. They start as young
as under-six. If you’d like to enrol your child
HILLS JILLAROOS
HOP TO IT
These sisters have more than their parents
in common. Eliza and Lily Brazel are two rising
stars in the world of women’s hockey whose
ultimate aim is to play for the Hockey-roos.
And the way they’re going, they could be on
the pitch for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
At just 18, Eliza Brazel has had a whirlwind
couple of years. Last year she was named
Hockey NSW’s Junior Player of the Year,
then she was accepted into the Australian
Institute of Sport in Perth and has been there
since February, training with the Hockeyroos.
She has just returned to Sydney to play in
the Hockey League for NSW at Homebush,
before heading to Cairns and Darwin to
finish the comp.
Both Eliza and Lily, 16, played in the
Jillaroos U21 side three-test series against
France in February in which Australia beat
France 3-0.
Both girls play in defence and on either
side of the field, so during their matches
against France, they were (almost) side
by side.
Their mum, Janette, who introduced them
to the Baulkham Hills Hockey Club at the
ages of 9 and 7, was also a hockey player
and has been part-coach, part-inspiration.
“They were both dancers and very
competitive and I said to them: ‘You need to
learn how to lose – to lose gracefully and win
gracefully. So a team sport is the way to go’.”
By all accounts, they took to hockey like
fish to water and haven’t looked back.
“The second year they were playing,
both were selected for the Parramatta
Association team – so they were already
playing representative hockey in the U10's
and U12's,” Janette says.
Lily has had a huge few years too. First she
won the Blacktown Junior Sports Person
Award, then a Layne Beachley $1500 Kickstart
Grant. She also won a scholarship
with the NSW Institute of Sport, then was
selected to play in the Australian Schoolgirls
U17’s side to tour Germany, Belgium, France
and The Netherlands. She returned from that
trip on March 31.
In April, she played in the Australian
U18's nationals in Brisbane – so three major
tournaments in eight weeks. “In the Jillaroos,
she’s the youngest by about two years,” says
Janette, “so she’s got a lot going on!”
Lily is also in the Australian Futures Group
(18s) of the Jillaroos. “It’s a big squad and
they select different players to play certain
tournaments.”
Despite the sisters being equally
competitive, Janette says they are very
respectful of one another.
“They love playing with each other and they
really respect each other on the field,” she says.
“They are very different players. Lily is taller,
aggressive and a risk-taker while Eliza is a
tough, hard grafter. They really complement
each other with their playing styles.”
“But they are well-grounded kids,” says
Janette. “It’s very nice seeing them in their
uniforms together.”
As for learning to lose, it sounds like that
lesson might still be some way off!
Football Club.
The club has a proud history going back nearly
60 years, originally starting in Regents Park. This
season, the club is fielding 28 teams from Under
6's, to all age men and women, to the highly
successful Premier League First Division squad.
The club has a sister club relationship with
Suita City in Osaka, Japan, and teams from
there have visited Australia several times to play
against the Birrong side.
The club had planned a reciprocal trip to Japan
this spring but have had to change plans at the
last minute because of the devastating tsunami.
Club treasurer Kerri Markkunen says the club
has been fundraising and had pulled together
the itineraries for the trip when the earthquake
and tsunami struck.
“Luckily we hadn’t booked the flights,” she says.
“Thankfully, we have now made arrangements
to play in Malaysia instead.”
The team of boys, aged between 11 and
16, will make the trip in the September
school holidays.
The football club’s long association with
Birrong is a proud one. “The club has always
been excited to be affiliated with our parent
club, (former Birrong Bowling and Sports Club),
where we have both supported each other over
nearly 60 years,” says Kerri.
“Birrong has always had a strong and energetic
volunteer base which starts at 7am for set up
till 6pm for pack-up.Our helpers are always well
looked after, with a bacon and egg brekky.”
As InTouch went to press the season had just
kicked off and had been rain affected. Both of
the clubs Premier League Division One teams,
the First Grade and Reserve sides, made their
grand finals last year – but just missed out on
winning. We wish them well for the 2011 season.
Four players from Bankstown Sports Bombers
AFL Club were selected to compete in the
Under-16 Joss State Zone Trials in mid-April – a
landmark event which could lead to selection
in the State squad, the U16s NSW/ACT RAMS,
or the Sydney Swans or GWS Academies.
Jackson Claridge, Jack Guthrie, Jacob Stek
– all representing Sydney South Zone – and
Bradley Wicken – representing Sydney West
Zone – attended the trials at St Ignatius
Riverview from April 17 to 21.
Bombers’ U16s Liaison Officer Craig Guthrie
(and father of Jack) said it was a great
achievement for so many Bankstown players to
be selected for the trials.
“The boys are all multi-talented, dedicated
individuals. We are very strong in that age
group in the club. In fact, we had three other
players who just missed out on going.”
The trials gave the boys the chance to learn
from some of AFL’s best coaches and players.
The week involved a number of AFL matches
as well as education sessions on health,
nutrition and what is required to play AFL at
the top level.
Sydney Swans coach John Longmire, Greater
Western Sydney Giants coach Kevin Sheedy,
Sydney Swans’ best and fairest winner Kieren
Jack and GWS Giants’ Israel Folau spoke to the
players about their experience at the top level.
Keeping a close watch during the trials
was U16 RAMS coach and dual premiershipwinning
former Geelong captain Tom Harley.
Harley is selecting a NSW/ACT RAMS squad
to compete in the U16 nationals in July. As
InTouch went to press, we were awaiting
news about whether any of the boys had
been selected.
“The State Zone Trials has traditionally been
the event where players take the next step to
improve their football,” Harley said. “Last year,
a record 18 NSW/ACT players were either
primary or rookie listed by an AFL club, all
of which came through the AFL NSW/ACT
Talented Player Program. The State Zone Trials
is truly a fantastic opportunity for all players to
learn, improve and to get an insight into what
is required at the AFL level.”
Craig Guthrie said all of the boys are running
midfield players. “None of them are six foot,
which shows that it’s a bit of a myth that all AFL
players are really tall. The style of the game has
changed.”
They have also all been through the
club’s Youth Development Program, where
they coach and mentor younger teams during
the season.
“It has helped immensely with their own
game development and instilled them
with more responsibility,” Craig said. “They
do coaching one night a week and on the
morning of the game.
“The club tries to identify kids that are able
to do it and they get an enormous benefit in
learning how to mentor and lead others. We
are trying to ensure the players develop the
skills and the right attitude for the game and
also for life.
“Certainly, they don’t attain this level if they’re
just good players. They need more going on
than that,” Craig said.
As proof of their ability and diversity, Jacob
Stek has also been selected in the Australian
U17 Softball Team.
