With the committee ageing and the idea of
a separate clubhouse well behind them, the
committee decided to commit the funds to the
playground. “To keep faith with the members
as we always said the money would be for the
children,” Deseline says. “This is about the best
thing we can do with the money. When the
club started it was a real family club and we
want it to remain a family club.”
“Bankstown Sports’ Board and Management
are very grateful for the generous donation,”
says Assistant Secretary/Manager Mark Condi.
“It’s three years since the first major
renovations were completed in April 2008,
costing $8.5 million. The developments
have made a massive transformation to the
club’s aesthetics and character and, in turn,
the members have really adopted the club,
growing from 3000 then to 10,000 today.”
The transformation has been so marked
some members even think the developments
have been the saviour of the club. Coupled
with its long history with sporting teams, the
club now offers a relaxed and family-friendly
environment with exciting new dinner and
entertainment options as well as professional
corporate and function facilities.
Coincidentally, both Bankstown Sports and
Baulkham Hills Sports had their beginnings
due to alignment with junior cricket clubs so
when the two amalgamated in 1999 there was
already a great synergy in place.
Baulkham Hills Sports began as one of the
oldest junior cricket clubs in NSW. Then called
the Baulkham Hills Cricket Club, it had its
beginnings in 1918.

Rosemary McLellan says she once feared
Baulkham Hills Sports wouldn’t survive in a
changing world. “Left to its own devices I think
it wouldn’t have lasted,” she says. “Other small
clubs were hit hard by changes in legislation
and I think we would have been on that list if it
hadn’t been for the support (from Bankstown
Sports) and the renovations.”
