SPORT 17 SEPTEMBER 2015 THE LOCKER ROOM DAMIAN WRIGHT - DIRECTOR OF SPORT Thank-you to all involved in the Term 3 activities of Basketball and Rugby. Both programs have significantly improved over the last 12 months and the future of Terrace Basketball and Rugby is in good hands. For Basketball, the season finished with a typically strong program performance. An analysis of the program would highlight the significant improvement in the overall standard / skill level on display by all the boys in Red and Black. In short, Terrace boys are playing better, competing better and are displaying far better game sense and decision-making in game situations. This significant improvement is a reflection on the improved coaching levels now available to the boys, headed by Mr Sam Mackinnon. The opportunity for the boys to learn from someone of Sam’s stature – both on and off the court – should never be underestimated. Sam is well supported by numerous hard-working coaches. The First V recorded their 5th victory for the year, overwhelming their opposition in front of a vocal supportive crowd. This team has continually defeated more fancied opponents and have finished in 3rd position overall – this is a significant improvement and good days are ahead for this team. Congratulations to coaches Mr Matthew Hamilton-Smith and Mr Andrew Latimer for their dedicated programs in getting the best out of the boys. In Rugby, the Terrace colours flew strongly again at Tennyson with a solid program performance. Thirty-nine teams represented the College in Rugby in 2015, and even though not all teams had the opportunity to play on Saturday – many boys were present to cheer on their mates. The quality of Rugby on display weekly by the boys in Red and Black is testament to the program generated by Mr Tyron Mandrusiak. Tyron is a tireless worker and provides great opportunities for boys in the Red Program (A-B) and the Participation Program (C-D-E-F). SPORT (CON’T) THE LOCKER ROOM In season 2015, there was only one weekend on which Terrace did not own the day and win the majority of games - and on that day Terrace produced numerous outstanding performances to win 13 fixtures against Nudgee College – a great result. While other schools focus on a purely A/B program, and limit the opportunities for boys to play - the Terrace program provides opportunities for all boys – regardless of previous experience. Well done to all the coaches and parents for providing such a positive sporting environment. First XV - This team may feel like they underperformed a little by winning three games this season and finishing in 7th position overall. The boys covered themselves in glory week in, week out by taking on opposition who were much bigger - however not once did any boy shirk his job and all boys were dedicated and courageous. In their minds they might consider three games slipped away but that is in itself a reflection of the vagaries of sport – the boys performed exceptionally well and did the College proud. Any summary of the two seasons cannot be complete without the recognition and thanks to the supporters’ groups. Mr Dean Booysen and Mr Mark Macklin lead the way in supporting the College’s programs by leading their respective supporters’ groups. Basketball and Rugby are well served by these groups which work tirelessly and quietly behind the scenes. Thank-you to both groups and to both men for their outstanding leadership. To both committees a sincere thank-you for answering the call on so many occasions when asked to volunteer your time. The programs would not work as effectively as they do without the numerous foot soldiers who so generously provide their time in so many areas. Sport has by no means now stopped – in fact it is building to the great events of Term 4 with the Track and Field championships on Saturday 31 October and the Gymnastics Championships on Saturday 24 October. Training for both activities is in full swing – Track and Field athletes need to dust off their training spikes and celebrate in the freedom of this great activity. If boys are in Brisbane over the holiday period then they need to be involved in training Monday, Wednesday and Friday of both weeks. The skill set available for Track and Field athletes to embrace is significant and highly influential on performances at the Championships. Grab the opportunity and train now.
