Changing Newsrooms, Redefining
Journalism
Some media companies are converging, triggering new configuraons of the organisaonal
dynamics and funcons of the newsrooms. The changes bring posive outputs such as
beer flow of informaon, beer use of resources, more communicaon and more sharing
of content. New forms of journalism such as blogging and cizen journalism are emerging,
blurring the line disnguishing professional journalists from the ordinary person who now
has the tools to disseminate informaon, ideas and opinions to a wide audience. What do
these changes tell us about changing news consumpon paerns? How will they impact
the organisaonal/training needs of the newsroom and the gate-keeping funcons of
media? Should cizen journalists enjoy the same legal rights and privileges as ‘professional
journalists’?
