In this picture the original background was a mess of tour bus and people with suitcases which did the subject no justice and would have led me to scrap the picture. So here I changed and distorted the background using a picture with complimentary colours to the girl. In reading this you would be forgiven for thinking that all portraits need to be post processed to create a piece of Photoart. This is most definitely not so. The aim is not to try and fool the viewer, but to fool the eye into believing the originality of the whole image. A similar effect was created with the picture of the man in the sunglasses but using the colours of a beech hedge in autumn for the contrast. All of these images are created by layering, in these cases there are three layers, two of the background and the main image. Once the processing is complete on the backdrop, duplicate the layer and put the main subject between. Then using the soft eraser, remove the front layer to reveal the main image being careful to leave the framing. In this image the scene is unaltered, but using the cameras depth of field, we have removed the subject from the background. The picture fools the eye into believing the background is blurred. To create something a little different we can also use mixed media to build a picture the Lady in Pink is just such a combination. Although the picture uses the same multilayer technique, this character was created in a slightly different way. The background image is the original, while the framing image is a scan from a printed letter page. There are only the two layers in this picture, but again the eraser has been used to remove the foreground to reveal the face of the main subject. Using two copies of the background, one was placed to the back and the other to the front of the figure. The background to the figure layer was carefully erased and then the front layer was erased leaving the overlay as required. Website = photosociety.net Page 15 email = magazine@photosociety.net
