Cathedral of Mary Our Queen | 2013 Yearbook

Dear Friends,
What an exciting and wonderful year this has been at our Cathedral of Mary
Our Queen Parish & School – and this Yearbook is a great way to look back with
satisfaction, pride, and gratitude to God for all that has unfolded in our lives
together this past pastoral season!
What a varied season of events we recall --- the Church throughout the
world began a special “Year of Faith,” prayerfully bid farewell to Pope Benedict
XVI as he concluded his ministry as Pope and greeted the election of our new Holy
Father, Pope Francis I, as our Chief Shepherd. Our School welcomed our new
Principal, Dr. Jane Towery and also hosted a special visit by our new Archbishop
William E. Lori. Our parish made much ministry happen as we focused our
energies on Education, Evangelization, Service, Stewardship, and Worship while
initiating a Strategic Planning Process for our Parish and School --- so much activity
in the name of the Lord which these pages help us to remember!
And, of course, we celebrated with all of Baltimore “purple Fridays” and a
Ravens Super Bowl victory!
As much as we enjoy looking back on another great year, we do so in order
that we can be inspired to keep looking forward and anticipating a new year ahead of us, filled with new
opportunities for continued growth and development.
The words of Pope Benedict XVI in his final public remarks at his General Audience of February 27,
2013 certainly encourage us as we “focus forward” on serving the mission the Lord has entrusted to us:
“I would like to invite everyone to renew firm trust in the Lord. I would like that we all entrust
ourselves as children to the arms of God, and rest assured that those arms support us and to walk every
day, even in times of struggle. I would like everyone to feel loved by the God who gave His Son for us
and showed us His boundless love. I want everyone to feel the joy of being Christian.”
Sincerely yours in Christ,
OUR THANKS
CMOQ serves the parish, parish school, and broader constituencies through our core commissions of
Worship, Service, Evangelization, Education, and Stewardship. But these services would not be possible without the
enabling work of the many behind-the-scenes Campus Ministry teams. Beyond staff, these include the hundreds of
CMOQ parishioners who lead and serve on the various committees listed above. They have our heart-felt thanks for
their service to CMOQ this past year!

WELCOME FROM OUR PASTORAL COUNCIL
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
It has been an honor to share the exciting 2012-2013 season with all of you! Our community celebrated many
significant milestones in that time. Among the highlights of our year:

We joyously welcomed our new Pope Francis I in a diocesan-wide celebration in March.
We bid a fond farewell to Assistant Pastor Fr. Pete Literal, who was named Pastoral Administrator of St. Thomas
More Parish in February.
We embarked on a new Strategic Planning Initiative to guide the Cathedral Parish through the coming decade.
We developed a new Pastoral Plan for the 2013-2015 seasons, focusing all our collaborative energies on 5 key pastoral
goals:
To expand the community of faith.
To empower discipleship.
To develop lay leaders.
To enhance worship.
To engage in proactive pastoral planning.

We began planning for the Cathedral’s First Annual Haiti Carnavale scheduled for September 14, 2013, a fund-raising
and friend-raising initiative to support our sister parish, St. Charles Borromeo in Gonaives, Haiti.
And as this Yearbook attests, there was so much more! Please join in the fun! There are so many rich spiritual,
social, educational, and service opportunities that await you. Call the Parish Center, email one of the Core Commissions,
ask an usher after Mass–it’s easy to get connected and get involved.
We appreciate your faith and fellowship, and look forward to seeing you soon at one of our many events and
activities.
STRATEGIC PLANNING
The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen
launched its first Strategic Planning effort in
2012-2013, in order to guide our parish through the
challenges of the 21 st Century. A Steering
Committee was formed in June 2012 and
commissioned according to guidelines established
by the Pastoral Council. The Committee represents
a broad cross-section of our community: key parish
groups, the School of the Cathedral, members of
diverse communities, current active parishioners,
and those with historical perspective.
The process began with a six-month review
of financial and demographic data, “best practices”
among cathedral parishes nationally, and a SWOT
analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and
Threats). Additionally, the committee examined the
“Focus on the Future” report from focus group
sessions in June 2011 and engaged parishioners in
conversation about our past, present, and future
goals. The group also sought the help of the
Georgetown Center for Applied Research in the
Apostolate to design and conduct a parish survey
eliciting opinions and ideas from as wide a parish
population as possible.
The discovery process also included support
from Archdiocesan leaders and parishes in our
“parish cluster,” as well as from the Church of the
Nativity’s leadership team and their
recently-published book, Rebuilt. The USCCB
Strategic Plan for the nation’s parishes has been
an invaluable resource as well.
As part of the process the committee has
been working closely with the School of the
Cathedral leadership and their Strategic Planning
Team, sharing resources and developing a shared
vision of collaboration for the integration of
students into active participation in the broader
parish life.
We are very grateful for the support and
guidance of Msgr. Jarboe of our efforts
throughout the process, and look forward to
presenting our results to the Parish in the early fall.
From there we will take the next steps toward
planning for our parish’s future in these challenging
times.
A tremendous thanks goes to Strategic
Planning Committee co-chairs Nancy Ryan
Lowitt and Annemarie Reilly and members
Clarence Bryant, Murphy Burke, Margie
Counsleman, Fred Hallahan, Helen Hiser,
Frank Knott, Doug McCoach, Mike McGeady,
Jeff Penza, Libby Rahl, and Tina Rodriguez for
their dedication and commitment to this process!
WELCOME & FAREWELL
Special Mass in Honor of Pope Francis I
On Sunday, March 17 th nearly 2,000
worshipers gathered in the Cathedral to give thanks
for the newly elected Pope Francis I. The
announcement came after millions watched the
white smoke flow from the Sistine Chapel chimney,
indicating a new pope had been elected by the
conclave of cardinals in Rome. Pope Francis I,
formally known as Cardinal Jorge Mario
Bergoglio, is a Jesuit priest from Argentina, and
the first non-European pope in more than 1,000
years.
The Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated
by Archbishop William E. Lori, with hundreds of
bishops, priests, and seminarians. Each of the
Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of
Baltimore was represented by students in uniform
carrying their school banner. School principals,
administrators, local officials, parishioners, and
worshipers from the greater Baltimore area were
among those in attendance. The Mass, which
incorporated Latin American elements such as a
Spanish reading and festive Latin music, was a
celebration for the faithful as they witnessed Roman
Catholic history unfold.
Farewell Mass for Fr. Pete Literal
At 5:00 p.m. on March 9 th Fr. Pete Literal
celebrated his final Mass as Associate Pastor of the
Cathedral. Hundreds gathered to worship and give
thanks for Fr. Pete, his dedication to the church,
and his faith-filled and generous ministry. Msgr.
Jarboe paid special tribute to Fr. Pete,
acknowledging his joyful eagerness and enthusiasm
in working with the Adult Faith Formation Team,
the Evangelization Commission, the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process, and
the Vocations Awareness Team.
Fr. Pete expressed his appreciation by
dedicating his final Mass to all Cathedral
parishioners. The standing ovation he received was
a testament to the tremendous contribution Fr. Pete
has made to the Cathedral. Parishioners lined up to
personally express their gratitude for his service and
wish him well in his new assignment as temporary
administrator at St. Thomas More in Baltimore.
We'll miss you Fr. Pete!
WORSHIP COMMISSION
Overview
The Worship Commission oversees the
vast array of ministries that enhance parish spiritual
life. Our heart-felt thanks go to all those who help
to make our liturgical celebrations memorable! If
you’d like to get involved simply call the parish
office or contact Tom Peddicord at
Worship@cathedralofmary.org for more
information.
Liturgical Ministries
Our parish is blessed with a cadre of
Liturgical Ministers who make our Masses run
smoothly. These dedicated volunteers include
sacristans, altar servers, lectors, Eucharistic
ministers, greeters, ushers, gift-bearers, music
ministers, and volunteers-at-large who assist
whenever asked. Well over 350 volunteers
contribute their time and talent to make the
celebration of Mass at the Cathedral prayerful and
joyous. Our special thanks to Kathy Norman,
Tom Peddicord, Nancy Lowitt, Carolyn Knott,
David Banta, Shirley Davis, and Gail Fennessey
for coordinating the efforts of each of these
ministries!
Sacristy Ministries
Some of the hardest working volunteers at
CMOQ are almost invisible! The Sacristy
Ministries work week in and week out behind the
scenes in the church to keep things running
smoothly. They dust and decorate the church and
sacristy, care for vestments and sacred linens,
arrange flowers, care for the Blessed Sacrament
Chapel, and more. This team is responsible for
changing the Cathedral's décor as we transition to
each new liturgical season.
Our Sacristy Ministers also prepare the
Baptistery for each sacrament of Baptism. They
arrange the baptismal candles, bibs, napkins,
booklets, and oils, fill the font with water, and light
the baptistery candles. Our volunteers even
embroider more than 100 Baptismal bibs each year
as gifts for our little ones! Our thanks go to
Thaddeus Warszawski, Jr. and his amazing crew
for all they do for us!

Oilers
One of the most intriguing ministries of our
parish is that of the Chrism Mass “Oilers.” Since
1984, this faithful group of volunteers has worked
Oils blessed at the Chrism Mass.
behind the scenes before, during, and after the
Chrism Mass to make sure that every parish,
chaplaincy, and religious community in the
Archdiocese of Baltimore receives its stocks of oils
for the coming year.
On the Monday evening of Holy Week, the
Chrism Mass Oilers assemble in the Undercroft. As
the hundreds of priests and visitors arrive for Mass,
they deposit their empty stocks (oil containers) with
the Oilers. During Chrism Mass, the Archbishop
blesses the Oil of the Sick, used to anoint the sick,
and the Oil of the Catechumens, used for anointing
at baptism before the water is poured. He also
consecrates the Oil of Chrism scented with balsam,
used for anointing at baptism after the water is
poured, at confirmation, at ordination, and in rites
pertaining to the dedication of churches and altars.
Once the Archbishop has blessed and
consecrated the oils, the Oilers whirl into
action. They have about one hour to fill the stocks,
keeping each oil separate from the others. After
Mass, the pastors, chaplains, and representatives of
religious communities pick up their newly filled
stocks from the Undercroft.
“Oilers” work diligently to fill the stocks for the upcoming year.
Serving their 30 th Chrism Mass this
past March 25 th were original Oilers Betty
Cox, Ann Hogg, and Claire Smith.
They hark back to a time when only twelve
Oilers were needed for the minimally
attended liturgy. Veterans Roxane
Chambers, Gail Fennessey, Carole
Hays, and Louise Macsherry joined
them a few years later when the ministry
expanded to accommodate the soaring
Chrism Mass attendance. This year, 34
adult Oilers and 12 confirmation
candidates donned aprons and skid-free
soled shoes to fill the stocks for
approximately 175 parishes and religious
organizations, using 7 ⅛ gallons of Oil of
the Sick, 6 ½ gallons of Oil of
Catechumens, and 6 ¼ gallons of Oil of
Chrism to complete their task.
First Communion
Ninety-seven students received the
sacraments of Reconciliation in January and First
Eucharist in May this year! In preparation for these
milestones the children attended Sunday School of
Religion sacramental classes, and their parents
attended sacramental meetings so they could assist
their children with this exciting year of learning our
Catholic faith. Following the First Communion
service, our first grade parents hosted a reception
for the First Communicants and their families in
the Parish Center. Many thanks to the parents for
their hard work. Everyone enjoyed the
refreshments and decorations.
The Service Commission provides
parishioners with opportunities to put our faith in
Christ into action by helping others. We support
Cathedral ministries, as well as other Baltimore area
ministries, and encourage parishioners to become
published Service Directory to see the scope of
parishioner efforts. To learn more about our
Service Ministries, you can also visit
Service Directory
Kudos to Meghan Cosgrove and members
of the Service Commission for the fabulous
job they did in compiling The Cathedral
Service Directory! It’s a wonderful resource
for everyone who wishes to make a difference
in the lives of others by volunteering. There
is something for everyone – adults, students,
and families!
The Directory contains descriptions of 13
Cathedral Service Outreach Programs and
59 outside Community Service Agencies
and Volunteer Outreach Opportunities,
organized under specific headings in the
Table of Contents. Each listing contains
pertinent information such as time
commitments, age minimums, responsibilities,
locations, and contact information.
involved in service outreach programs. There are
numerous volunteer opportunities available, such as
the Adopt-a-Family Program, the Gabriel Network,
the Haiti Parish Partnership, the Cathedral Food
Program, CARES, and Our Daily Bread
Employment Center. A few are highlighted in
these pages, but pick up a copy of our newly
The Directory offers a tremendous variety
of programs from which to choose. Some
offer one-time service opportunities, while
others require regular weekly or monthly
commitments. You’ll find the chance to coach
children’s soccer, provide transportation for
those who don’t drive, visit and/or organize
activities for the elderly, make casseroles, knit,
donate to the needy, teach adults how to read,
work at a homeless shelter, assist at a blood
drive – the list goes on. This amazing
document is a testimony to the excellent outreach
efforts of our wonderful parishioners in service to
others!
You can find the Service Directory on our
parish website, at the doors of the Church, and in
the Parish Center.
Adopt-a-Family
Once again, our Adopt-a-Family program
was a tremendous success! One hundred and fifty
Cathedral families provided food and gifts to 115
Families from Immaculate Conception Parish on
Mosher Street this Advent season. Our parish
raised another $6,800 in checks and gift cards,
which we presented to Brother William Stover to
provide assistance to the surrounding community.
Words can’t express how amazing it was to see a
24-foot panel truck filled to the brim with
Christmas gifts, plus a dozen cars packed with the
overflow. The recipients of your generosity are
mostly working poor, living in housing complexes
in downtown Baltimore, who struggle to make ends
meet. What a pleasure it is to provide them with a
little Christmas joy!
Thanks to those wonderful families who
were so generous and made such a difference in the
Haiti Project
The Baltimore Archdiocesan Haiti Project
works to forge bonds of faith and friendship
between Catholic parishes in Baltimore and
Catholic parishes in Gonaives, Haiti. The Cathedral
partnered with St. Charles Borromeo, one of the
poorest parishes in the country. Small groups of
Cathedral parishioners traveled to Gonaives to
offer friendship and ascertain needs. Over the
years, we've sent over $25,000 in assistance and
have sponsored two meal packaging events to raise
awareness for world hunger, which is a critical
problem in Haiti.
This year, St. Charles was assigned a new
rector, Msgr. Nicolas Vitesse, and our
partnership continued to grow! We are planning
the First Annual Haiti Carnavale to be held on
September 14, 2013 on the Cathedral grounds. It
will be both a "Friend-raiser" and a "Fundraiser!”
Cathedral families spread a little Christmas joy through the Adopt-a-Family program.
lives of others. And a very special "Thank You" to
Boy Scout Troop 1000, who set a delivery record
this year in unpacking the truck in under 30
minutes! They were a real human assembly line and
worked like a well-oiled machine!
The event will feature centerpiece artwork, created
and displayed by our own Cathedral parishioners.
We will enjoy traditional Haitian fare, Haitian
music, and fellowship in worship, which is central
to Haitian culture. Msgr. Vitesse will join us for the
celebration and will offer his thoughts and prayers
about our partnership. For more information
about how you can get involved, please contact
Paddy Morton at paddymorton6@aol.com.

Feed the Hungry
Three major programs supported by
Cathedral parishioners strive to answer Jesus’ call to
Feed the Hungry - the CARES Food Pantry, the
Cathedral Food Program, and the Our Daily Bread
Ministry.
Thanks to all who supported the CARES
Food Pantry in 2012-2013. CARES is a
combination Food Pantry and Emergency Financial
Assistance center. It was founded in 1993 by a
group of dedicated volunteers from churches in the
Govans area. Beyond simply providing emergency
assistance, CARES' goal is to help families escape
the pantry in 2012. Thank you!
The Cathedral Food Program collects
donations from parishioners and uses the funds to
purchase food directly for the hungry; to support
food programs in schools, and to donate to other
organizations that feed the hungry directly. This
year, through generous donations in the yellow
Cathedral Food Program envelopes, we collected
nearly $8,000 to touch the lives of several thousand
people – some individually and some through
established “feed the hungry” programs. Thanks to
all the wonderful donors to the program. You
make such a difference! And kudos to Annina
Griggs and her committee for their tireless efforts
in this ministry. New committee
members are invited and
welcome! Annina can be
contacted at 410-868-8838.
Cathedral students prepare casseroles for Our Daily Bread.
the cycle of crises and move toward self-sufficiency.
This year CARES provided help to 4,100 people in
neighborhoods bounded roughly by Falls Road,
Northern Parkway, Perring Parkway, and 39 th
Street. Assistance included food, eviction
prevention assistance, employment counseling for
250 people, and support for senior citizens. The
Cathedral gave an estimated 703 food donations to
Our Daily Bread
ministry benefits Our Daily
Bread Employment Center, a
Catholic Charities program
supporting the Baltimore
hungry. This year on the first
Tuesday of every month,
Cathedral parishioners made and
served lunch at Our Daily Bread.
This was accomplished in three
ways. One group, bringing
casserole ingredients with them,
met monthly in the undercroft
of the church following the 9:15
a.m. Mass, made casseroles in
fellowship together, and then
froze them for delivery to Our
Daily Bread. Other parishioners
made the hot dog and bean casseroles at home and
dropped the frozen meals off at the church for the
monthly delivery. A third group drove the
casseroles down to Our Daily Bread and helped
serve the guests at the soup kitchen, which serves
an average of 770 people seven days a week, 365
days a year. A great big thank you to all who helped
this very worthy effort!
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION
Overview
The Evangelization Commission
welcomes and invites all members of our faith
community to participate more deeply in parish life.
As an advocate for the diverse needs of our
parishioners, the group supports the parish RCIA
program and organizes community-building
opportunities such as the New Parishioner
Welcome Night, docent-led tours of the Cathedral,
Sunday Coffee and Donuts, the Cathedral Mom’s
Club, the Christmas Tree Lighting and Caroling,
and Family Friendly Fridays. The Commission
publishes the new parishioner Welcome Guide and
this Yearbook, as well as a variety of other parish
publications. Want to become more
involved? Come and join the fun!
For more information email Tina Rodriquez:
Cathedral Tours
Did you know? Our Cathedral is very
historic! There are fascinating stories connected to
almost every window, step, and alcove with
references to Biblical, Church, and even Maryland
history! A dedicated group of docents provides
approximately 20 one-hour guided tours
throughout the year, with focus on the architectural
and historical significance of the Cathedral. Be in
the know! To schedule a tour, simply contact the
parish office at 410-464-4000.
Do you enjoy history? New docents are
always welcome! Docents volunteer three to four
hours per year. It's helpful to have appreciation for
and knowledge of architecture and Church art and
history, but it's not necessary. New guides are
trained and given information cards for each
interest point of the Cathedral. For more
information or to become involved, please contact
Amanda Stepp through the parish office.
The Mom’s Group
The Mom’s Group has had an active year!
The group, consisting of moms from the Cathedral,
St. Pius X, and St. Thomas Aquinas parishes, is a
weekly playgroup for children and their moms from
birth to age five. In addition to enjoying play dates
at the churches and local parks, we organized craft
sessions, took trips to local libraries, and visited the
Train Garden at Kenilworth at Christmas time.
The group also planned holiday and other visits
throughout the year with the residents of Villa
Assumpta. New moms are always welcome to join
the fun! Simply contact Sherri Rachuba at the
parish center: srachuba@cmoq.org.
Msgr. Jarboe captivates our littlest parishioners!

New Parishioner Welcome Nights
This year the Cathedral hosted two
Welcome Nights to meet and greet RCIA graduates
and other new members of our parish family. On
the evenings of Monday, October 7 th and Monday,
May 20 th Monsignor Jarboe, Monsignor
Hurley, Fr. Pete Literal, the Pastoral Council,
and members of the Evangelization Commission
welcomed new parishioners at the Rectory.
Fr. Hurley welcomes a new parishioner.
Parishioners met new friends, enjoyed tasty treats,
and learned about the many opportunities available
to participate in parish life. Monsignor Jarboe
opened each evening with a prayer and invited
everyone on a tour of the rectory. A special "Thank
You!" to Joyce McCrystle, Tina Rodriquez,
Marlene Pasternak, and MaryEileen Aldana who
organized the October event and to Bernadette
Roney, Helen McWilliams, Sheila Peter, Tina,
and MaryEileen for helping set-up, clean-up, and
welcome our many guests in May.
Christmas Tree Lighting and Caroling
On the evening of December 6 th , hundreds
of parishioners gathered on the front lawn of the
Cathedral for the annual lighting of the parish
Christmas tree. Following a special blessing and
prayer by Monsignor Jarboe, the white lights were
lit, and the celebration began. Everyone was singing
as they processed into the Cathedral. Accompanied
by Dan Sansone on the piano, Anna Hiser led the
congregation in song. Favorites like “The Twelve
Days of Christmas,” “Silent Night,” and “Joy to the
World” were among the songs performed. Fr. Pete
led the Boy Scouts as they participated with
enthusiasm from the front of the church. When the
carols concluded, everyone enjoyed hot chocolate,
Christmas cookies, and a special visit from Santa
Claus in the Parish Center!
Publications Committee
The Publications Committee of the
Evangelization Commission worked hard again this
year to produce the second annual Parish
Yearbook. Special thanks to MaryEileen Aldana,
Teresa Burke, Liz Phelan, and Tina Rodriguez
for pulling it all together. The yearbook highlights
many of the activities and events that happen at the
Cathedral throughout the year. It also includes
numerous opportunities available to participate in
parish life. All parishioners are invited to contribute
ideas, photos, and stories about their experiences at
the Cathedral to help create a diverse and interesting
yearbook. We're always looking for more members
to join the Pub Club fun, so if you are
interested just email Tina Rodriguez at
Boy Scout Troop 1000
It was a great year for Troop 1000! The
Cathedral Scouts received the Hopkins Council
Troop of the Year award for 2013 for our exceptional
program, with strong adult involvement and a core of
about 25 active scouts. This year, we conducted a bike
hike on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail in
September, canoed on the Potomac in October, hiked
the Appalachian Trail in November, visited the Air and
Space Museum at Dulles and the Manassas National
Battlefield in January, skied at Seven Springs in
February, climbed Old Rag Mountain in March, biked
the North Central Railroad trail in April, and camped
on Gibson Island in May.
Summer camps in June included the Heritage
Scout Reservation in the Laurel Highlands of PA for
the younger scouts and a two-week saga out west for
the older scouts. This
included rafting on the
Colorado River, hiking to
the bottom of the Grand
Canyon, riding the narrow
gauge railroad between
Durango and Silverton,
and hiking in the Chicago
Basin portion of the
Weminuche Wilderness
Area in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. We also
visited the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde, the Fiery
Furnace in the Arches National Park, and the Black
Canyon in Gunnison National Park.
Our Troop’s program also consists of
leadership training for each new set of scout leaders
elected by their peers at the beginning of the Fall and
Winter/Spring portions of the year. To help defray the
cost of its summer programs, the Troop has been
selling and delivering mulch each Spring for the last
four years. In April, the Troop celebrated its 50 th
anniversary with a bull and oyster roast attended by
160 current and former scouts and family members.
To date, the Troop has helped nurture over 50
Eagle Scouts. Our congratulations go to John Gaver
and Ian Sevy for joining that illustrious group this year
as our newest Eagle
Scouts. Our sincere thanks
to Scoutmaster Tom
Hosford and all of the
Assistant Scoutmasters,
Committeemen, and
parents who make the
program such an
outstanding success!
EDUCATION COMMISSION
Overview
The Education Commission strives to
help all parishioners grow in their knowledge and
understanding of our Catholic faith. It
encompasses four major ministries here at the
Cathedral: Adult Faith Formation, Youth
Ministry, School of the Cathedral of Mary Our
Queen, and the Sunday School of Religion.
Youth & Family Ministry Introduction
The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen Youth
& Family Ministry Office was very busy this year
organizing annual events, as well as starting a new
Middle School Program--The BRIDGE. We had
fun at our middle school mixers and high school
casserole making. We invited new members to our
middle and high school programs, making this
another successful year. Thanks to Meghan
Cosgrove and her volunteers for all their efforts
with our youth!
BRIDGE Program
The BRIDGE Program helps young
people transition to new times in their lives by
expanding their involvement in the parish
community. We give special attention to our young
parishioners who are transitioning to middle and
high school. The BRIDGE programs incorporate
liturgy, fellowship, service, and education. Topics
for discussion this year included reality TV,
bullying, social media, and making choices. Service
projects for the group
ranged from making dinner
at Baltimore Station to
playing basketball with
students from Holy Angels
Catholic School. We also
enjoyed playing the Annual
Turkey Bowl, a scavenger
hunt around church, and
bowling.
Our youth serving dinner at Baltimore Station.
social events. We celebrated Mass in the Parish
Center and served the community through various
service projects. Our projects included Blankets for
Our Brothers, Dinners at Baltimore Station, Happy
Helpers for the Homeless, Breakfast Bags, and
Happy Helpers
On the first Sunday
of every month throughout
the school year, students
and parent volunteers met
to decorate bags and then
fill them with breakfast
treats for the needy.
Students brought granola
bars, fruit cups, juice boxes,
and oatmeal to the Parish
Center where we packed the bags. Then we headed
to Our Daily Bread where the students distributed
the breakfast bags to the homeless men, women,
and children. Thanks to all those who
demonstrated their faith in action through their
participation!
Summer Work Camp
As always, we wrapped up our school year
with our own Baltimore Summer Work
Camp. Our group of 15 high school students
served the community in different ways, while
having fun and making friends in the process. We
worked at The Samaritan Woman where we
harvested the vegetables, mulched, and cleaned and
painted the house. The students also worked at
the Baltimore Station with men in recovery. We
visited Symphony Manor and made necklaces,
painted, and played BINGO with the
residents. Mid-week we took a much-needed
break to travel with 50 of our children, parents, and
teens to Kings Dominion for a day of fun and
adventure!
SMILE
At the beginning of August, 30 seventh,
eighth, and ninth graders joined members of three
other parishes, Immaculate Conception, Nativity,
and St. Joseph’s Cockeysville, in yet another
Baltimore Summer Work Camp called SMILE –
Summer of going the extra MILE!! Students
gardened to maintain the estates at the Samaritan
Woman, picked vegetables at First Fruit Farm for
the Maryland Food Bank, and worked with the
elderly at Broadmead, Arden Court, Blakehurst, and
Stella Maris. They also made food bags for
Catholic Relief Services to be sent to Haiti. As an
end of the week treat we traveled to Hershey Park
with more than 150 people. Our Cathedral youth
love to participate in service and have a great time
doing it.
20 th Annual Palm Sunday Youth and Young
Adult Pilgrimage Walk
On Saturday, March 23 rd our Cathedral was
host to nearly 1,000 Catholic youth who
participated in the 20 th Annual Palm Sunday
Youth and Young Adult Pilgrimage Walk. The
group started in Wyman Park and walked to the
Cathedral, praying the rosary outside five churches
on Charles Street and attending a concert at Notre
Dame of Maryland University along the way.
Following the concert they continued their walk to
the Cathedral in time to attend the 5:00 p.m. liturgy
with Archbishop Lori. What an inspiring
beginning to Holy Week!
Ski Trip
On a cold, wintery morning two buses filled
with 85 students and volunteers headed off to Ski
Liberty for a day of skiing fun. Students rented
their skis or snowboards and got out on the slopes.
Some took lessons, and some were traversing the
blue and black diamonds! After a full day of
fellowship and a good meal, we headed back to the
Cathedral. Thanks to all the volunteer chaperones
who made the day possible!
Live Stations of the Cross
Cathedral families came together on Good
Friday to watch LIVE Stations of the Cross,
enacted by the Cathedral Youth Group. As part of
this Lenten tradition, students Jack Olson, Dennis
Sannoy, Denise Sannoy, Marion Comi-Morog,
Mallory Higgins, Liam Muhly, Thomas Muhly,
Andrew Hurdle, Tommy Dendrinos, Daniel
Amanfo and Gabriella Amanfo dressed as if they
lived in the time of Christ and re-enacted fourteen
scenes leading to the death and resurrection of
Jesus.
Readers Maddie Buttarazzi and Gloria
Healy led each station, offering an interpretation of
its meaning in our everyday lives. After a quiet
reflection, Meghan Cain led the singing of a verse
from a hymn that symbolized the message of each
station. The evening ended with a meal of soup
and bread in the Parish Center. Our thanks go to
Meghan Cosgrove for all her efforts in organizing
and presenting this liturgical tradition.
SUNDAY SCHOOL OF RELIGION
Sunday School of Religion Introduction
The Sunday School of
Religion provides religious
education for children from
Kindergarten through 8 th grade
who do not attend a Catholic
School. It also provides
instruction for the Sacraments of
First Reconciliation and First
Eucharist and supports parents as
they work to prepare their
children for this important
milestone.
School of Religion Catechists
The School of Religion is
blessed with its excellent catechist
volunteers! This school year, 20
catechists, seven assistant
catechists, and seven helpers
brought religion to life for our students. Most
have been teaching in the program for more
than 10 years, and some for more than 20 years!
We're always looking for new catechists, so we
invite you to get “hooked” on spreading the
Good News by volunteering! To learn more
contact Sherri Rachuba at 410-464-4010.
School of Religion Program
This year 272 students registered for the
Sunday School of Religion to explore “What
Catholics Believe,” “How Catholics Worship,” “How
Catholics Live,” and “How Catholics Pray” using
the religion series Blest Are We. We also
explored the dignity of human life, Catholic
morality, and family relationships through our
Family Life catechesis book, Growing In Love.
Our goal is to help students make good
decisions, build healthy relationships, and stay
safe. We presented the material from a Catholic
values perspective in a sensitive and
First-graders hard at work at Sunday School of Religion.
age-appropriate manner. We also worshipped
together at class Masses, and celebrated the
sacrament of Reconciliation at least once during
the year.
Service is another important feature of
the School of Religion. To help our sister
parish, Immaculate Conception on Mosher
Street, we collected canned goods and Giant
gift cards at Thanksgiving, and clothing and
toys at Christmas. During Lent, we collected
money in the Lenten boxes for the Holy
Childhood Association.
Winter Bingo
Christmas Bingo is the Sunday School
of Religion’s annual fund-raiser. It was a fun
evening for all ages that included dinner, bingo,
and raffle baskets. Thanks to all who supported
our program by donating prizes and attending
the event!

Academic Excellence
As expected, academics play an integral role
in our school life. We follow a rigorous curriculum
that challenges the mind and strengthens the spirit
to prepare our students to face the challenges of
the 21 st century.
We had a very successful 2012-2013 school
year! Sixth grader Lexi Poindexter represented
our school in the Archdiocesan Spelling Bee.
Eighth graders Luke Scaletta and Paul Kinkopf
were awarded prestigious and highly competitive
Knott Scholarships, which provide full four-year
tuition to the Catholic High School of their choice.
We continued our quest to fully integrate
technology into to our classrooms. We installed
Wi-Fi throughout the building, provided lap top
computers for full time faculty members, and
sponsored weekly professional development with
technology as a focus. We're committed to
providing the best possible educational
environment for our students!
Cathedral Graduates Shine!
Fifty-seven graduates in the Class of 2013
applied and were accepted to a variety of Catholic,
private, and public schools throughout Baltimore
and the surrounding area. Several of our graduates
received scholarships and have truly emerged as
Spiritual Strength
Religion rules at the School of the
Cathedral! We integrate core Catholic principles
into every academic subject area. Students learn
Christ’s message through daily religion class,
Morning Prayer, and special prayer times and
themes for each grade. We celebrate class liturgies
in which students participate as lectors, petition
readers, ushers, singers, and altar servers, and we
jointly celebrate monthly Class Masses with the
Sunday School of Religion. Students also take part
in penance services throughout the year.
At Christmas time, each grade chose a
favorite charity to support, such as the House of
Ruth, Mother Seton Academy, and Food for
Thought. During Catholic Schools Week, the
intermediate grades made over 400 Breakfast Bags
Service & Outreach
By providing service to the greater
community, the School of the Cathedral students
were able to bear witness to their Catholic identity
firsthand this year. Students supported the parish’s
Haitian partnership, donated Giant gift cards to
include in Catholic Charities Thanksgiving baskets,
and collected non-perishable food items for St.
Martin’s Home for the Aged. Several of our fifth
5th Graders delivered food items to St. Martin’s Home.
grade students personally delivered the food items
to the Home .
Christmas Convocation
for My Sister’s Place. Lent brought a great
opportunity for our Monsignor Whelan Program
students to make sandwiches for Our Daily Bread,
while first and second graders donated diapers,
food, and cleaning supplies to My Sister’s Place.
Third graders provided treat bags for the retired
School Sisters of Notre Dame at Villa Assumpta,
and all students earned and collected funds to
contribute to the Catholic Relief Services Rice
Bowl Program.
In addition to the monthly Our Daily Bread
casserole collection, our middle school students
asked for canned good donations for Our Daily
Bread at all middle school Stars and Stripes
competitions, and spent a morning in the fall
making casseroles in the cafeteria through the Big
Brother/Big Sister Middle School program. The
eighth graders were involved in a variety of
community service activities in preparation for the
sacrament of Confirmation, as well.
Parent Leadership and Participation
The School of the Cathedral could not
succeed without the leadership, talent, and expertise
of its parents. The Cathedral School Parents
Association (CASPA) coordinates and hosts a
variety of cultural, social, athletic, and fundraising
activities that strengthen our community spirit and
provide opportunities for participation and service.
The 9 th Annual Cathedral Golf Open was
held on Friday, September 28 th at The Elkridge
Club in Baltimore. Cathedral parents, friends, and
sponsors joined together for a day of fun and
healthy competition. We thank Co-Chairs John
Boote ‘81 and Pat Franklin for their dedication to
this community building event, and we're extremely
grateful to the McGeady Family for their
sponsorship of our outing. The Golf Classic raised
over $14,000 for the school’s Endowment Fund
and cafeteria enhancements.
The 52 nd Annual School of the Cathedral
Ball, The Hon Ball – Celebrating the Charms of
Our City, was held on April 27 th . Chaired by
parents Dennis and Michele Tadeo and John
and Amy Sweeney,
the event raised
funds for technology
ADULT FAITH FORMATION
Adult Faith Formation Introduction
Adult Faith Formation is critical to the
mission of the Education Commission of the
Cathedral and encompasses such ministries as the
Adult Faith Formation Team, Catholic
Scripture Study, the RCIA program, and
resources such as the Cathedral Library.
The Adult Faith Formation Team
(AFFT) plans and implements programs and events
that reinvigorate faith and renew the spirit of
service. Last year, these included scripture study, a
speaker series, retreats, and more! The new “Adult
Faith Formation Brochure” made it easier than ever
to learn about and participate in the many programs
that were being offered. A huge thank you to
Anne Merwin and the Adult Faith Formation
Team members Karen Banta, Ed and Sue
Dickey, Bobby Goldsborough, Vicente Inola
(Tatay Jojo), Meghan Latshaw, Helen
McWilliams, Rosemary Peddicord, Sherri
Rachuba, and David and Emi Ronderos for the
excellent work organizing a tremendous array of
opportunities for our parishioners. The AFFT
always welcomes new members. Just contact Sherri
Rachuba at the Parish Center or send an email to
CHALLENGE: EXTREME MAKEOVER
Catholic Scripture Study Program
Now in its 12th year, the Catholic
Scripture Study Program is an independent,
archdiocesan program that pursues an in-depth
study of the Catholic faith in a structured 28-week
format, complete with advance preparation, study
materials, scripture insights, discussion, and
homework.
This year the Cathedral’s Catholic
Scripture Study Group chose the Word on Fire
Catholicism Study Program as its focus. The
Word on Fire is a DVD–driven study of the
Catholic faith using the book and materials of Rev.
Robert Barron. Following the study program
guidelines, 50 participants met weekly on
Wednesday mornings in the Parish Center to
discuss the basic teachings of the Catholic faith and
to inspire one another through faith-sharing. The
year began with Mass and orientation in early
September, and included an Advent almsgiving
effort that sponsored the Traveling Chalice
Program. It concluded in April with a fellowship
brunch and a marvelous docent-led tour of the
Cathedral that tied the stained glass windows,
carvings, and artwork to topics highlighted in the
program. The group also sponsored a Lenten
almsgiving effort that provided a scholarship to the
School of the Cathedral. Our sincere thanks to the
coordinator and study leader Rosemary
Peddicord, and to group leaders and assistants
Kay Barnes, Eileen Edwards, and Dori
Stanwick for an outstanding program!
Faith-Sharing Groups
Using the Rev. Robert Barron materials in a
more casual way, 60 parishioners participated in
Small Faith-Sharing Groups that met from
October through May. These groups of six to ten
people gathered either in the Parish Center or in
private homes, and focused on certain lessons from
the Catholicism DVD series. Babysitting was
provided in one group, and at least two groups
accommodated people speaking other languages.
The year culminated with a pot luck supper prior to
the Discipleship Retreat in May. Some groups
enjoyed the process so much that they plan to
finish the series next year if they haven’t already
done so. Our gratitude to coordinators and study
leaders Ed and Sue Dickey, and to group leaders
Megan Latshaw, Murphy Burke, Carol Gould,
Frank and Molly Carmody, David Ronderos,
Anne Merwin, and Vicente Inola (who facilitated
two groups) for the efforts that made this such a
successful endeavor!
Parishioners enjoy fellowship as they deepen their faith.

CATHEDRAL SPEAKER SERIES
Panel Presentation and Discussion
“Living the Catholic Faith in a Secular World”
Our Cathedral Speaker Series kicked off on
Saturday, October 6 th in the Parish Center, with a
dynamic panel presentation and discussion on the
topic of “Living the Catholic Faith in a Secular
World.” Panelists included Fr. Joseph Breighner,
lecturer, retreat master and columnist for the
Catholic Review; James J. Buckley, Professor of
Theology at Loyola University
Maryland; and Mary Ellen
Russell, Executive Director of the
Maryland Catholic Conference.
Msgr. Jarboe opened the
event with prayer. Each panelist
gave a 30-minute presentation
with Dr. John Hosler serving as
moderator. A lively question and
answer session followed, and
legislative activist Mary Ellen
Russell provided handouts about
voting in the upcoming election.
The morning was a great success,
as noted by comments from those
in attendance: “Loved entire program.
Inspirational and informative.”
“Panelists and moderator did a
wonderful job of addressing questions
and challenging perspectives with the
overriding message of asking us to be for
things (not against) and do it with love.”
“Well informed speakers.” Thanks to
the Education Commission and the Adult Faith
Formation Team (AFFT) for planning such a
timely and informative presentation!
“To be a Catholic is to be Counter Cultural”
Fifty-four parishioners gathered on the
morning of Saturday, November 3 rd to enjoy the
second offering in the Cathedral Speaker Series,
“To be a Catholic is to be Counter Cultural,”
presented by Rev. Jerry Francik, Pastor of St.
Mark Catholic Church in Fallston, MD. Jojo Inola
opened the program with an ice-breaker activity,
and Fr. Pete Literal led all assembled in an
opening prayer. Then Fr. Francik gave his seminar
followed by a question and answer session. His
presentation was very much enjoyed by all present.
Feedback included: “Very clear explanation of complex
issues…” “Clear articulation on how we can hold our
faithful ground in tough issues like marriage equality…”
“Fr. Jerry did an excellent job! Best Catholic speaker I have
heard in a while.” “Fr. Jerry’s candor
[was appreciated] on the most
controversial and sensitive topics, all the
while maintaining Catholic perspective
and compassion.” “Fr. Jerry is brilliant
and presents with clarity, love, and
understanding!” Thanks to Anne
Merwin and the AFFT for
arranging for this inspirational
speaker!
“I am Spiritual,
but not Religious”
The final presentation in
the Cathedral Speaker Series
occurred on Saturday morning,
March 3 rd . Fifty-six intrigued
parishioners assembled to hear
Rev. Joseph Barr, Pastor of
Immaculate Conception in
Towson and former Associate
Pastor here at the Cathedral,
present the topic “I am Spiritual,
but not Religious.” Fr. Barr spoke about New
Age Spirituality, a topic of interest to the entire
parish community, and especially young adults. He
provided an overview of New Age and described
many of the New Age practices and philosophies,
which were new to many in attendance. Some
attendees commented: “The extent of New Age
surprises me. It’s beginning to feel like we Catholics are
strangers in a new landscape.” “Interesting overview of
topic…” “Very insightful and interesting. Father Barr is
so relaxed and funny!”
PARISH RETREATS
Advent
“It was amazing!” “A chance to pray in a new and
refreshing way!” “[Msgr.] Amato is very spiritual, also
entertaining. He presents in a very understandable fashion.”
Such were the comments of participants following
our Advent Retreat “Prepare & Awaken Your
Desire for God.” Sixty-eight parishioners met in
the Parish Center on the morning of Saturday,
December 1 st for an introduction to our Advent
journey led by Msgr. Nicholas Amato, Retreat
Master and Counselor. The morning began with
prayer led by Fr. Pete Literal. Then during two
talks Msgr. Amato guided the group to an
understanding of the Four-Step Model for
Contemplative Presence. Those in attendance left
refreshed to begin preparing for the birth of Christ.
Lent
Seventy parishioners enjoyed a wonderful
and inspiring Morning of Recollection in the Parish
Center on Saturday, February 16 th to begin their
Lenten journey. The day began at 9:00 a.m. with
prayer by Msgr. Jarboe. Then Msgr. Robert
Jaskot, Pastor of Holy Family Church in Middleton
MD, presented on the topic “The Challenge and
Grace of a Good Lent” using Scripture readings
and discussion. Attendees were enthusiastic in
their praise of the event. “Excellent speaker! Great
command of the subject and scripture!” “[Msgr.] Jaskot is
highly blessed with his knowledge, humor, and understanding
of his topic as it relates to us.” “Inspiring explanation of the
Lenten gospels!” What an energizing way to have
begun our Lenten journey!
Discipleship
“As the Father has called me, I have
called you” was the theme of our parish
Discipleship Retreat held on Wednesday evening,
May 22 nd , and facilitated by Rev. Richard
DeLillio, Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministry
at the Catholic University of America. The evening
began with 5:30 p.m. Mass by Fr. DeLillio,
followed by a delicious lasagna pot luck dinner for
participants of the small Faith-Sharing Groups. At
7:30 p.m. Deacon Bill Senft opened the retreat
with prayer, after which Fr. DeLillio reminded us
that this life is not a dress rehearsal. We need to do
ordinary things in extraordinary ways, to learn to
imitate Jesus, and to develop His eyesight. He
challenged us by asking, “What does Jesus see
when he looks at each of us?” The retreat invited
and inspired all to serve the parish and community
according to the gifts we have been given.
Enthusiastic attendees commented: “One of the best
speakers you have had!” “[Fr.] DeLillio was inspiring and
funny.” “Father’s presentation was very simple, yet very
meaningful to our daily walk of faith.” “He touched my
heart with his genuineness and joy.” “Excellent ideas to live
in present moment keeping God’s love for us in focus daily!”
RCIA
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA) is the process through which interested
adults and older children are introduced into the
Catholic faith and way of life. Throughout the year
RCIA candidates met every Monday evening in
preparation to receive the Sacraments of Initiation
– Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confirmation. This
year a group of 16 men, women, and young people
completed the process and joined our Catholic
community of faith at the Easter Vigil on Holy
Saturday evening. Then they were invited to
celebrate at our New Parishioner Welcome in May.
We are delighted that they are now part of our
Cathedral family! Our thanks go to Shirley Davis
for coordinating our RCIA Program again this year.
STEWARDSHIP COMMISSION
Overview
The Stewardship Commission facilitates
the sustainable use of the Cathedral’s resources to
help bring Christ to life in our
community. Members identify, analyze, and
recommend strategies to develop long-term, quality
pastoral ministries, programs and activities by
encouraging our community to live the Gospel
message of stewardship: the giving of time, talent,
and treasure.
Among their many roles, Commission
members assist in the financial management of our
parish and the physical preservation of its buildings
and grounds. Their area of influence includes the
Facilities and Maintenance Committee, the
Development Committee, the Preservation Trust,
Legacy Giving, and the Finance Committee. They
are actively involved in our parish’s budgeting and
planning work, as well as diocesan appeal efforts.
This year, the Stewardship Commission
partnered with the Vocations Committee to
promote the Cathedral’s Vocation Awareness
program. They helped launch the highly-popular
Traveling Chalice program to promote awareness of
our need for priests and other consecrated religious
men and women to carry on the work of our parish.
The Stewardship Commission welcomes
parishioner involvement! To learn how you can
participate on any of the committees email
Stewardship@cathedralofmary.org. We hope to
hear from you!
Capital Campaign
The capital campaign, Embracing Our
Mission, which started in 2011-2012, continues to
yield results. Three hundred and eighty seven
Cathedral families have pledged $2,070,399 toward
our goal of $2.5 million. Parishioners have been
encouraged to make pledges to be fulfilled over
time, up to five years. Although active solicitation
has ceased, it's still possible to contribute through
envelopes in the pews designated to the campaign.
The Cathedral’s campaign is part of the
Archdiocese of Baltimore's larger effort to raise
$100 million, with different parishes joining in each
year. The Cathedral and the Archdiocese are
sharing the proceeds as follows: 15% of the first
$1,770,000, or $265,000, goes to the Cathedral with
the remainder going to the Archdiocese. Anything
beyond $1,700,000 all stays with the Cathedral.
Thus of the $2,070,399 pledged so far, the
Cathedral will keep $300,399, with more to come.
At our parish level, the funds will be applied
to build more classrooms at the School of the
Cathedral, repave church walkways, renovate the
rectory kitchen, fund the school endowment, and
add to the Preservation Trust.
Previous capital campaigns have funded the
Preservation Trust, which provides important
financial support for repairs and maintenance
for Cathedral buildings and grounds. For
information on the Preservation Trust and
how to make a contribution, please email
Stewardship@cathedralofmary.org.
