WELCOME FROM OUR PASTORAL COUNCIL Dear Fellow Parishioners, It has been an honor to share the exciting 2012-2013 season with all of you! Our community celebrated many significant milestones in that time. Among the highlights of our year: We joyously welcomed our new Pope Francis I in a diocesan-wide celebration in March. We bid a fond farewell to Assistant Pastor Fr. Pete Literal, who was named Pastoral Administrator of St. Thomas More Parish in February. We embarked on a new Strategic Planning Initiative to guide the Cathedral Parish through the coming decade. We developed a new Pastoral Plan for the 2013-2015 seasons, focusing all our collaborative energies on 5 key pastoral goals: To expand the community of faith. To empower discipleship. To develop lay leaders. To enhance worship. To engage in proactive pastoral planning. We began planning for the Cathedral’s First Annual Haiti Carnavale scheduled for September 14, 2013, a fund-raising and friend-raising initiative to support our sister parish, St. Charles Borromeo in Gonaives, Haiti. And as this Yearbook attests, there was so much more! Please join in the fun! There are so many rich spiritual, social, educational, and service opportunities that await you. Call the Parish Center, email one of the Core Commissions, ask an usher after Mass–it’s easy to get connected and get involved. We appreciate your faith and fellowship, and look forward to seeing you soon at one of our many events and activities. STRATEGIC PLANNING The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen launched its first Strategic Planning effort in 2012-2013, in order to guide our parish through the challenges of the 21 st Century. A Steering Committee was formed in June 2012 and commissioned according to guidelines established by the Pastoral Council. The Committee represents a broad cross-section of our community: key parish groups, the School of the Cathedral, members of diverse communities, current active parishioners, and those with historical perspective. The process began with a six-month review of financial and demographic data, “best practices” among cathedral parishes nationally, and a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats). Additionally, the committee examined the “Focus on the Future” report from focus group sessions in June 2011 and engaged parishioners in conversation about our past, present, and future goals. The group also sought the help of the Georgetown Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate to design and conduct a parish survey eliciting opinions and ideas from as wide a parish population as possible. The discovery process also included support from Archdiocesan leaders and parishes in our “parish cluster,” as well as from the Church of the Nativity’s leadership team and their recently-published book, Rebuilt. The USCCB Strategic Plan for the nation’s parishes has been an invaluable resource as well. As part of the process the committee has been working closely with the School of the Cathedral leadership and their Strategic Planning Team, sharing resources and developing a shared vision of collaboration for the integration of students into active participation in the broader parish life. We are very grateful for the support and guidance of Msgr. Jarboe of our efforts throughout the process, and look forward to presenting our results to the Parish in the early fall. From there we will take the next steps toward planning for our parish’s future in these challenging times. A tremendous thanks goes to Strategic Planning Committee co-chairs Nancy Ryan Lowitt and Annemarie Reilly and members Clarence Bryant, Murphy Burke, Margie Counsleman, Fred Hallahan, Helen Hiser, Frank Knott, Doug McCoach, Mike McGeady, Jeff Penza, Libby Rahl, and Tina Rodriguez for their dedication and commitment to this process!
