art ..................................... focus on: Mark Nelson View from the Brooklyn Bridge, 2001, printed on silver gelatin baryta When did you take this photograph? I was working for a photography agency called Monsoon in New York and one of the shots I was doing in 2001 was of the World Trade Center. I was too close to get a good shot, so I thought I’d get further back to Brooklyn Bridge where I could get a better angle. It just so happened that the building was just lighting up and you could see all of the people inside working. I got my shot and went back to New Jersey. A few weeks later, 9/11 happened. Have you been back to that spot since? I haven’t, no. I’ve been up the new Freedom Tower and I had previously been inside the World Trade Center, but I haven’t been back to Brooklyn Bridge. When I look at the photo now and think the majority of people inside were… have had their lives affected by 9/11, it’s really tragic. The site is like sacred ground. Were all of the photos in ‘American Stories’ taken around the same time? They were taken over the last 25 years over lots of visits – up to three times a year - and living there at times. It was the classic American road trip: to Vegas, the Grand Canyon, along Route 101 through California. I stayed with a couple of friends, one an artist himself, and he introduced me to the work of Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. People like that would seep into your system and it would come out somehow as a photograph. Painters have always interested me; they see things differently to photographers. Painters have the advantage of being able to see what they like, but photographers have to rely on what’s happening in front of them. What is ‘silver gelatin baryta’? Silver gelatin paper is a very thick, high quality fibre-based paper, held together by gelatin, which is now available digitally as baryta. There’s a silver coating to it, which gives the ability to print digitally exactly the same as you used to be able to. I was a printer before a photographer, so I learnt my skills in the dark room, being inspired by the landscape work of Ansel Adams. I used to have one of his quotes on my wall: ‘the negative’s the score, but the print’s the performance.’ Rebecca Cunningham ‘American Stories’ will be exhibited at 35 North until mid-October. 35northgallery.com. firstlightclick.com ....59....
