Rathfinny Trail Coffee and cake in wine country We last visited the Rathfinny Wine Estate in May and, whilst it was an impressive sight to see, there wasn’t a drop to drink. Not so anymore. Their labours have borne fruit and the first Rathfinny still wine ‘Cradle Valley’ – a blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay - is now available in The Gun Room in Alfriston. I’m no expert, but having tried some, I can report that it bodes well for the fizz, for which a little further patience is required. The first vintage, slowly fermenting in 5,500 bottles nearby, won’t be ready until January 2018. There have been other developments on the Estate, too. The 180 acres of vines have been establishing themselves, and preparations are underway in the Winery to receive the 50 to 60 tonnes of ripened grapes they expect to harvest this autumn. Visitors are welcome to see for themselves and guided tours, complete with a Winemakers Lunch, will start again in April 2016. If you can’t wait that long, walkers are invited to take the two-kilometre Rathfinny Trail all year round, with maps available from The Gun Room. We decide to walk in on a golden autumn morning and set out from the car park at Bo Peep. I’ve forgotten the map, which results in an unholy havoc involving dogs, partridges and badger sets, but it’s worth all the mayhem when we arrive around an hour and a half later. We stroll down past acres and acres of young vines to the ‘Flint Barns’, the converted farmhouse-cumhostel accommodation for seasonal pickers and pruners at the bottom of the Estate. Its manager Adrian is waiting to offer refreshment from an old Citroën van, lovingly nicknamed ‘Raffy the Café’. We sit and take in the view as we recount the tale of our off-piste expedition over coffee and cake. (Coffee & walnut, and lemon drizzle polenta, by the way, and both delicious.) The incredibly stylish ‘hostel’ accommodation is available for bed and breakfast when not in use by the Estate. It’s all soaring ceilings, stripped oak floors, open fires and endless views, and can accommodate single walkers through to groups of 45 in a variety of room sizes and configurations. ‘Hostel’ doesn’t begin to do it justice and with its cosy communal lounge, dining room and in-house chef for parties of ten or more it makes the perfect South Downs retreat. Adrian tells me it’s like a ‘home away from home’, but it’s decidedly nicer than my house. There’s also talk of supper clubs and Sunday roasts and, tempting as it would be to stay (indefinitely), we pick up a map and head back on the trail, in a more orderly manner than we arrived.
