ighton maker ................................ Baines & Fricker <strong>Brighton</strong> rockers What do you make? We design and make furniture and accessories, as well as illustrated wallpaper and cushions. One of our bestsellers is the rocker, which we first made in 2011 and re-create each year; this year we’re making it using London Plane wood with bright green Kvadrat upholstery. What a lot of people don’t know is that we also design bespoke pieces for residential and commercial clients. We’ve designed interiors for local businesses like Dowse on Western Road and zero-waste restaurant Silo. What direction were you given in the design of Silo? The main brief was to reuse materials as much as possible, to fit the concept of the restaurant, but obviously there are limits to what we can make with recycled materials. The next key criterion was to use materials which could be found in abundance, which is why we decided to use a fair amount of OSB (a kind of chipboard), which is essentially a waste product from the wood manufacturing industry. We developed a great relationship with Cat Fletcher, the founder of Freegle, and we were given lots of old school desks which had been thrown out because the schools didn’t have the budget to get them repaired. They were too low to use as tables but too high for seating, so we chopped the bottom off some of the legs to make them into benches and welded the offcuts onto the bottom of the others to make them into tables. Is re-use of materials something you like to bring into your own work? We’re very conscious of not creating waste and using recycled materials where it makes sense to. If we use new timber certified from a sustainable source, we know that for every tree we use, two more are planted in its place. Sometimes, because of the need to process recycled materials or the quality of the finished product, it can be a false economy. What types of residential projects have you worked on? We’ve designed bespoke kitchens, including a ‘Meccano’ kitchen for some clients who wanted flexibility in the space, so we created everything on casters. Our designs are quite functional; we love designing little hidden features which make the most of the space. A lot of our projects in <strong>Brighton</strong> tend to be for storage, or smaller pieces of furniture to fit into the spaces people have. Do you prefer working on bespoke pieces to making products you’ve made before? The great thing about making bespoke pieces is that it gives us a good variety of challenges. We wouldn’t like to work on rockers all day long, but when we’ve worked on a few different projects and then come back to making something familiar, it’s really satisfying to see the end product.
