this month’s cover artist .......................................... This month’s cover is the work of Chris (Sick) Moore, a graphic designer and part-time DJ whose B-Movie-style posters you’ll likely have seen plastered around town promoting his Stay Sick nights at Sticky Mike’s. “I’m inspired by Jim Flora, a graphic designer from the 50s,” Chris explains. “His use of colours and crazy images are where a lot of my cartoons like this cover come from.” The character he’s created for this design is based on the Bride of Frankenstein, who has pulled up a deckchair for a spot of Addams Family-inspired ‘moonbathing’. Fortunately she’s remembered her bottle of Moon Lotion so she won’t end up with moonburn like Uncle Fester. Originally the figure was going to be accompanied by Frankenstein himself, and the famous Bandstand would be making an appearance. “I sketched it out on A4, but when I made it smaller it felt a bit too crowded,” he says, “so I thought I’d simplify it.” After the quick sketching stage, Chris looks online for inspiration and visual references to form the final look. Once he’s decided on the composition, he’ll hand sketch the design and re-work it in Illustrator to finish it off. The hand-drawn Viva masthead looks to have been sliced and stitched together, much like this month’s cover girl. Chris has drawn this one from scratch, but he sometimes uses the ‘Frankenstein approach’ to create fonts for posters and sleeve artwork. “I use lots of fonts from old movie posters to get that sort of vintage vibe,” he explains, “and depending on the length of the title you’ll probably get a handful of characters. But then there are ways you can change it slightly; you can change a ‘v’ into a ‘y’ very easily.” Even without a landmark in sight, this scene couldn’t be set anywhere but here. “I wanted it to be Brighton-centric so obviously my automatic thought was the beach, but particularly the railings.” The familiar turquoise of the seafront steelwork inspired the colour palette for the design. “If you don’t live in Brighton you might think of the Pier or the Pavilion first, but I’ve always loved the colour of the railings, that really says Brighton to me, in a more subtle way.” We couldn’t agree more. And if you find yourself admiring those railings next time you walk past, be sure to steer clear of the zombie claw emerging from the pebbles.
