finish. Whichever you choose, lips will feel very smooth and
hydrated – and the colour (or at least the tint) really goes
the distance. The lipstick is enriched ‘with the signature
Burberry blend of tea, lavender and rosehip’. And of
course, being Burberry, the packaging’s as sexy as it gets –
etched with the Burberry check, and with a very satisfying
magnetic ‘snap’ as it clicks into place. The only challenge?
Choosing which of 28 shades to indulge yourself with, from
suits-everyone nudes to Burberry’s classic Military Red.
TIP: For lipstick to look its best, lips must be super-smooth.
Never pick at flakes, but lightly scrub them with a D-I-Y
sugar scrub. Just put a dot of olive oil on your finger, and
a few grains of caster sugar, and then rub in a circular
direction. Remove with a wet flannel (resisting the urge
to eat the lip-buffer!), and follow with lashings of balm.
Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet. £8.99. If you like a lip
look that lasts and lasts and lasts and lasts (and lasts), this is
your baby. (And strong lips are such a great look, this winter.)
It delivers va-va-voom from the get-go: seriously strong,
intense colour with – yes, the name lives up to it – a velvet
finish, in 10 shades. It’s incredibly lightweight, and doesn’t
deliver that sensation that you’re wearing someone else’s lips,
and they’re slightly too small – which is all too often the case
with a long-last lip product. You want to get the application
right – but with the sponge tip, that’s quite easy. Just apply
– and forget about it, till you catch sight of your lips in the
mirror at lunchtime, and realise that yes: that vamp is you.
LIP TIP: To stop lipstick getting on your teeth, pucker lips
and pull your index finger through. The excess lipstick
that gets on your teeth will come off on your finger.
For once this season, being a loudmouth is a good thing.
Vivid reds and deep burgundies abound – and I’m
embracing them. I’m not ashamed to say that I take
make-up seriously: I’ve seen skilfully applied foundation make
a woman appear 10 years younger, and strategically placed
blush and highlighter create cheekbones where, to the naked
eye, there were none. But of all the make-up options out
there, lipstick is the one that makes the quickest difference,
often cheering up you (and your looks) with a single swipe.
The past 18 months have been a ‘vintage’ season
for fab lipstick launches. Here are the products which
have put a massive smile on my face (if you get my
drift), along with some of my favourite-ever ‘lip tips’.
(Note: as with shoes and coats, I always think it pays to
trade up and invest in a more luxurious lipstick: there
genuinely is a difference in texture/finish – and a lipstick
you love can last you years, even with regular use.)
Burberry Kisses Lipstick, £25. Lipstick-phobes, this
one’s for you. Because this is so utterly comfortable, you
barely notice there’s anything there till you look in the
mirror. It’s super-lightweight, super-moisturising and very
‘buildable’ – meaning that you can go for a light, sheer
wash of colour, or a vampy pout with a luscious, luminous
Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Shine Sculpting
Lipstick, £24. What I really, really love about this
‘new crop’ is that they knock old-school lipsticks into a
cocked hat, comfort-wise. Several factors have hooked
me, with this: the ease of application, it truly does glide
on very smoothly, straight from the tube. Secondly, the
16 shades feature something for absolutely everyone –
from discreet nudes to deep berries. But most of all, that
Slanket-like comfort: Color Envy Shine incorporates
hyaluronic spheres and a ‘time-released’ moisture
complex, so it really doesn’t ever feel dry or tight.
LIP TIP: If you are worried about lipstick bleeding
apply some under eye concealer around the edge
of the lips before applying the lipstick.
Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick,
£23. Once upon a time you wouldn’t have caught me
dead anywhere near a matte lipstick, which also made
lips feel like every last molecule of moisture had been
Dyson-ed out of them. Not any more. This – from A-list
make-up pro Charlotte Tilbury – is the comfiest I’ve yet
found. Ultra-glamorous, in Charlotte’s signature copper
packaging, it’s enriched with papaya and orchid extracts,
with a blend of triglycerides and oils, and feels really
