Work, Rest & Play
WT finds out about what’s been done to enrich the boarding facilities at three local schools...
Ashford School: “Boarders at Ashford School come from
across the world and start at age 10. As there is no Saturday
school it gives boarders – and staff – a chance to indulge
their passions and to become better culturally aware.
A packed programme of activities is planned to
run throughout the year which includes full use of
the school’s facilities. There’s Scuba Diving in the
swimming pool, Fitness in the gym and Basketball
in the Sports Centre. There’s even a Korean Cooking
Club which is educating both staff and students.
Ashford’s excellent location means boarders enjoy a wide
variety of trips. Canterbury is just half an hour away by train
and is a regular on our boarders’ choice of visits. London,
of course, is only 37 minutes by High Speed train which
means there is always an opportunity to pop up for a theatre
trip, Christmas shopping or a visit to a museum or two.
There are regular activities during the week,
particularly for younger boarders. Juniors enjoy Fun
Tuesdays which can feature anything from bowling
to cinema, paintballing to pizza-making evening.
Director of Boarding Mark Single said: “Weekends are a time
for relaxing, exploring and doing a little more of what you
enjoy. We keep our boarders busy and they have a significant
input into the activity and visit programme. If they don’t
like it, we change it; if they love it, we do more of it”
Ashford School is a coeducational independent boarding and
day school in East Hill, Ashford, Kent. For more information
Claremont’s school timetable includes activities
such as music, drama, art and sport and boarders
are encouraged also to put forward their own
club ideas if they are not already included
Claremont School: “Claremont Boarding House, located
in the heart of historic Battle, opened its doors to fifty UK
and overseas students in September 2015. This facility offers
state of the art facilities, a full programme of activities and
exclusive learning opportunities to prospective students.
As well as the full academic programme on offer, the
school timetable includes activities such as music, drama, art
and sport. In addition, there is an extensive range of clubs
that take place including horse riding, golf, gymnastics,
swimming, kickboxing, tennis, rock band, trampolining,
singing and other activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh
scheme. Boarders are encouraged also to put forward
their own club ideas if they are not already included.
