[KATI, SOUTHERN]
SOUTHERN KATI (Southern Muju) is spoken on the lower Moejoe
River in Irian Barat by perhaps 4,000 people. The language
spoken by the Kowan people on the Fly River at its westernmost
point may well be a dialect of Southern Kati, but no sample of
their speech is available to the author. The most detailed study
of Southern Kati was that made of the Metomka dialect by Fr. P.
Drabbé. ... another dialect was [studied] by Geurtjens under the
name "Digoeleesch". He claimed that this dialect was spoken on
the Digoel River north of the Bian River. However, this area now
seems to be uninhabited and / the present location of the
speakers of this dialect is unknown to the author (unless they
should prove to be the Kowan people). Another specimen of
Southern Kati is the list of 110 words collected by Austen from
the village of Anu.

Comments: Drabbe mentions that South Kati is spoken in all
villages south of Yiptem and along the Kao River, but he does not
indicate how far north the language area stretches. The
questioned viillages in the above list are all north of Yiptem
along the Kao River.

would make these three languages a single language.
