Situation. -- Kandam is situated near the headwaters of the Muiu<br />

River <strong>in</strong> Dutch New Gu<strong>in</strong>ea, close to the boundary of Papua, and<br />

also is close to the Birim River, a tributary of the Tedi (Alice)<br />

River. The Birim River languages are very similar to the Upper<br />

Muiu ones, and are allied to those of the Western Tedi people.*<br />
