Ramadan is the month in which the rewards of our good deeds are
multiplied, the doors of Hell are closed, the gates of Paradise are open
and the Shayateen are locked up. These factors encourage us to increase
our good deeds, worship Allah, increase Taqwa and Imaan; and these are
the reasons why Allah ordered the believers to fast in this blessed
month. Allah says ‘Oh you who believe, fasting has been prescribed
for you as it was prescribed to those (nations) before you, so that you
may attain piety. (Al-Baqarah, 2:183)
Those who fast only to "experience what the poor people are going
through" are fasting for the wrong reasons. Fasting is not only about
abstaining from food and drink between daylight hours; it also entails
giving up your desires, habits and disobedience in order to become
completely subservient to Allah .
Bearing this in mind, it is essential for us to understand that we must
utilise this blessed month as much as possible, by changing our old ways
and doing many good deeds. The Sahabah (Companions) would shed
tears and beg Allah to give them the opportunity to reach Ramadan.
If we find that every year we change during Ramadan, but then return
back to our old ways, then we may not be achieving the main purpose of
fasting – to attain Taqwa.
Rasulullah said: A person may fast, but he will gain nothing from his
fasting except hunger. And a person may perform Qiyaam (stay awake
at night whilst praying, reciting the Qur'an, studying Islam etc.) but gain
nothing but sahar (i.e. staying awake and not getting any reward).
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith no.1690)
May Allah give us the correct understanding of the month of Ramadan
and may we attain piety through fasting.
PARADISE FOR SALE
At certain times during the year, vendors arrange sales of various items at their stores where items such as shoes and
clothes can be bought at relatively inexpensive prices. Women in particular are often very attracted to such sales since
they can save a lot of money on items that are on sale.
An examination of the Holy Qur'an and Hadith reveals that Allah offers Paradise for sale during the holy month of
Ramadan through His infinite mercy. Allah says in the Holy Qur'an:
GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
The wonderful season of spring greets us with the blessings of lush vegetation, delicious fragrances of beautiful flowers,
and trees laden with fruit. Likewise, the holy month of Ramadan is a month of springtime for the believer, where Allah’s
blessing and mercy surrounds the believer at every point throughout the day and night.
Hence, surrounded by such awesome mercy, this is truly a golden opportunity for anyone wishing for nearness to Allah
and forgiveness from sin. It seems that the phrase golden opportunity was coined with the holy month of Ramadan in
mind, because this phrase perfectly fits the description of this month.
PARADISE ADORNED
During Ramadan, blessings shower down in such abundance, that it seems that the doors of blessing have become wide
open. According to a Hadith, Paradise is perfumed and decorated for the believers just before Ramadan, and on the first
day of Ramadan Allah instructs the angels to open the doors of Paradise for the believers. Thus Paradise is adorned for the
believers like a bride is adorned for her groom.
EXCELLENCE OF THE TEN DAY PERIODS
But Allah calls to the Home of Peace (10:25)
Allah opens wide the gates of mercy and invites His servants to Paradise. Thus, they need to make every effort to work
righteously and earn the right to go there. O Creator, we ask from You Paradise and seek refuge from the Fire (Hadith)
EXCELLENCE OF THOSE WHO FAST
This month is so blessed that the birds in the air, the fishes in the seas, and the animals on the earth pray for the forgiveness
of all those who fast. Moreover, when they break their fast at Iftaar, the angels say Ameen to their duas.
Those who are fortunate and wise enough to take advantage of the blessings of this month are honoured with the special
status such as that of a wali and an abdaal. Muslims should learn valuable lessons from their elders and regard each moment
of this month as a precious opportunity to earn righteousness so that they may also earn the special regard of Allah.
Ramadan is a special month for seeking the mercy and forgiveness of Allah. The Messenger of Allah said about the
month of Ramadan:
The first ten days of Ramadan are days of mercy; the second period of ten days is for forgiveness, and the final period of
ten days is for seeking refuge from Hellfire.
INCREASE IN REWARD
Allah increases the reward for deeds in this special month. For an optional (Nafl) act, a person is rewarded according to
the reward of a mandatory (Fardh) deed, and the reward for a Fardh is multiplied at least seventy times.
THE PROPHET ’S PRACTICE DURING RAMADAN
The Companions used to say that with the start of Ramadan they would note an increase in three things in the practice of
the Messenger of Allah .
The Messenger of Allah would dramatically increase his worship, despite the fact that his normal worship was such that
his noble feet would swell from standing in prayer for extensive periods of time.
He was tremendously generous in giving for the sake of Allah, and during this month, he would open his heart and hands
even more in charity.
He would increase his weeping in front of Allah in fear and humility, seeking repentance.
Increasing worship, charity, and supplication are Prophetic examples that all Muslims should strive to follow with
sincerity. Muslims tire their bodies every day in their work, but there should be at least some time during their lifetime
when the body gets exhausted in worship. There should come such a time when the eyes long for sleep, but the
worshipper reminds himself that struggling to stay awake seeking Allah’s pleasure will earn him the honour of looking
upon Allah in Paradise. The eyes that stay awake now will sleep soundly in the grave.
Only after death do restless hearts find peace
Only he sleeps soundly who remained awake. Ramadan is the month of staying awake during the night in worship.
Believers should accustom themselves to less rest and sleep and respect this month for the holy month of struggle,
sacrifice, and immense blessing that it is.
THE PROPHET ’S WAITING FOR RAMADAN
The Messenger of Allah used to wait anxiously for the month of Ramadan and had such great regard for it that he
would supplicate to Allah in the month of Sha'baan to see the Muslims safely into Ramadan. The tremendous value of a
month that even the Messenger of Allah would pray for, cannot be weighed by anything on earth.
Say: "O my Servants who have
transgressed against their souls!
Despair not of the Mercy of God:
for God forgives all sins: for He is
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(Qur'an 39:53)
ALLAH’S MERCY SEARCHES FOR EXCUSES
Bani Qalb Nami was a village outside Madinah Munawwarah whose families owned large numbers of sheep and goats and
subsequently, it became very famous for sheep herding. The Messenger of Allah once said that in a night of Ramadan,
Allah frees people from Hell in numbers as large as the number of hair on all the sheep of Bani Qalb Nami.
This and many miracles like this illustrate that Allah’s mercy searches out excuses for the salvation of Allah’s people.
THE SEASON FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
Price, the Mercy of Allah desires not But excuses for forgiveness.
Vendors, grocers, and all sales professionals have a specific season that they prepare and work hard for. When their
season for sales arrives, they set themselves aside, excuse themselves from all non-essential engagements and focus solely
on the season at hand. Moreover, they pay less attention to eating and sleeping properly because they remain so
absorbed in their trade and stay focused on how to take advantage of their particular season in the best manner. These
people value this time and embrace hard work because their chance to make huge profits comes only once a year, after
which they know they can afford to relax a little.
Likewise, the holy month of Ramadan is a season for righteousness for all those who wish to draw nearer to Allah and have
their sins forgiven. The fasts of such people who remain restless for Allah’s sake are not only limited to abstinence from
food and drink, but their eyes and tongue and all else also remains in a state of fasting. When Muslims remain thus in a
state of fasting from head to toe and raise their hands in supplication at the breaking of the fast (Iftaar), then Allah will
grant whatever they wish for.
Nowadays we hear a lot people complaining on making ends meet,
we hear people saying there is no Barakah. Who knows, perhaps
the reason for this deprivation of our resources is our disrespect
for food. You would hardly find a Muslim today who does not
waste food.
Everywhere, whether it is a weddings, dawats, or eating out, you
will find people wasting and disrespecting food. It is quiet sad, how
much food is dropped on the dinning-mat (dastarkan) without any
concern or regard for it.
After eating, leftovers of food and meat still remaining on the
bones and on other big pieces of spices, which are then
thoughtlessly thrown away. Most people do not even think of
saving the leftovers and eventually the good food ends up in the bin.
If food is not appealing or appetizing , it ends up in the bin, It is said that the Holy Prophet never found fault with any
food; if he had the inclination, he would eat it, and if he disliked it, he would leave it.
It is not only food, but water is also wasted. Unfortunately, most Muslims do not realise this. They think that since water is
in abundance, how can one waste it? Thus, when brushing the teeth, the tap is let to run. When washing the dishes, the
tap is left to run on full blast and is left to run continuously while the dishes are gathered on the sink. When making
Wudhu, we see the taps are left on full blast (especially in mosques).
If we look at and reflect on our conduct and behaviour, we will realise the sad and the sorry state of the Ummah, where
there is no love or regard for our fellow Muslims. There is greed, selfishness and ingratitude; everyone is out to get the
best for themselves and their children. It does not matter if other Muslims are left with scraps of food or even nothing.
Allah says in the Qur’an, “And it is He Who produces gardens trellised and untrellised, and
date-palms, and crops of different shape and taste (its fruits and its seeds) and olives, and
pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in taste). Eat of their fruit when they ripen,
but pay the due thereof (its Zakah, according to Allah's Orders) on the day of its harvest,
and waste not by extravagance. Verily, He likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by
extravagance) “ Surah Al-'An`am (6:141)
“O Children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat
and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah loveth not the wasters.” Surah Al-A'raf (7:31)
Thus we should all repent from the food and water that we may have wasted and vow
never to waste a single speck of food ever again. By Allah! On the Day of Judgment, we
will have to give an account of everything we waste.
There Are Severe Warnings in the Ahaadith In Regard To Talking in the Masjid
It is narrated that worldly talk in the Masjid destroys the good deeds just as fire consumes wood (ibid); or
as animals eat away grass. This way all virtues are destroyed totally. The time in the Masjid should be
spent in worship, etc. one should save himself from disturbing others, in vain and worldly talks and
backbiting. If anyone is doing so, he should be stopped with great love and respect.
It is reported in a Hadith that when a person engages in worldly talk in the Masjid an angel says to him:
“Keep quiet O friend of Allah.” If he continues in his worldly chatter, the angel says for the second time:
“Keep quiet O enemy of Allah.” If he still persists, the angel finally says to him:
“Keep quiet, may the curse of Allah be upon you” (Aadabul Masaajid pg.6).
WARNING
In a saying: A time will come on people when they will indulge in worldly talks and
vain talks in Masjid, so you must not sit with such people; Allah has no need for
such people. (Baihaqi)
In another Hadith a severe warning has been sounded, that when the Ummah will
engage in fifteen actions, calamities will pour down upon them. One of the fifteen
points mentioned is: “...and when voices will be raised in the Masjid.” (Mishkat)
What is
Ramadan?
Maulana Abdur Raheem Sahib (D.B)
(Sheikhul Hadith Darul Ulloom, Bury)
Ramadan is month of remembering the poor and
destitute among the society, a time to think of
those poor souls who could barely manage a loaf
of bread. We will have plenty of food at Iftaar but
their Iftaar never comes. Bishr Haafi, a great
Saint, was once lying in the Masjid, it was cold,
he had a blanket by his side but he was
shivering, someone asked him 'why don't you
cover yourself with the blanket? He replied 'Many
poor people are shivering in the cold, I don't have
enough money to buy them warm clothing, the
least I can do is shiver a little bit so I can feel for
them and maybe pray for them.
Hadith: 'Every good deed of the son of
Adam is multiplied, one Hasana by
tenfold and up to 700 times, Allah
says ' Except for Sawm, as it is for me
and I will personally give it's reward, he/
she leaves food and shahwat for my sake'
For the fasting person there are two joys,
one when he/she opens the fast and the
other when they meet their Lord.'
Hadith: Ramadan has come
upon you, it is a great blessed
month, In it is a night better
than a thousand months,
whosoever is deprived of it, is
deprived of all good.
Ramadan is a month of
remembering Allah , turning
towards him, repenting from past
sins, major and minor, making a
firm resolution never to lead a
sinful life in future.
Ramadan is a month of patience, especially
this year and the next few years. Especially
for those who smoke as they will feel the
crave but they will have to resist. It's a good
time to give up this bad habit.
Ramadan is full of Noor, the Noor of the
day is due to the fasting and it is different
from the Noor of the night which is due to
Tarawih and recitation of the Qur'an. A
Muímin should take his fare share of both
Noors.
Ramadan of our Pious Predecessors
HADHRAT SHAYKH UL-HIND (R.A)
Hadhrat Shaykh ul-Hind Maulana
Mahmood Hasan‟s (May the mercy
of Allah be upon him) Tarawih
would conclude at the time of the
pre-dawn meal (Suhoor), at which
time he would eat and get ready for
Fajr prayers. Thus, he would spend
the entire night in worship.
After a few days of following this
strict regimen, the women of his
household grew concerned about
his health after noticing grave
symptoms of fatigue. Therefore,
they implored Hadhrat to take a
break and rest, after which he could
continue after getting refreshed.
However, Hadhrat would reply that
he may not be alive to see another
Ramadan.
Then, the women sent a message
to the Qari leading the Tarawih
explaining the situation to him and
requesting him to end the Tarawih
early, with the excuse that he was
tired. They were well aware that
Hadhrat Shaykh ul-Hind was very
considerate of others‟ welfare and
would accept that excuse without
question. The Qari agreed because
he too wanted his Shaykh to be
able to get some rest.
Consequently, the Qari completed
the Tarawih after just one or two
Juz because he had already
informed his Shaykh that he was
tired and could only recite so much.
After Tarawih, Hadhrat insisted on
having the Qari sleep on his bed on
the mosque grounds instead of
going home. Hadhrat's mureed had
to comply with this request and lay
down on his Shaykh‟s bed. Hadhrat
shut off the lights and urged his
mureed to sleep.
The Qari dozed off, but was awakened soon
thereafter by someone pressing his feet. He
got up and upon looking closely was shocked
to realize that it was none other than Hadhrat
Shaykh ul-Hind! He said incredulously,
“Hadhrat! What are you doing?” Hadhrat
replied, “You yourself said that you were tired
so I thought I should press and massage your
feet so that you may feel better.”
At this, the Qari got out of bed and said,
“Hadhrat, if you intend to be awake all night
anyway, let us go into the mosque and I will
read the Holy Qur'an to you so that you can
pass the night listening.” So both of them
went into the mosque where Hadhrat's
mureed started reciting in prayer and Hadhrat
lined up behind him listening to his recitation
of the Holy Qur'an.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
HADHRAT MUJADDID ALF-THANI (R.A)
Hadhrat Mujaddid Alf-Thani (May the mercy
of Allah be upon him) wrote in his Maktubat
that all the year‟s blessings are a drop in the
ocean when compared to the vast blessings
of Ramadan. He continues to say that this is
the reason why all the Holy Books were
revealed in this holy month. Ramadan has a
strong connection to the Word of Allah which
is why Muslims should excessively recite the
Holy Qur'an in this month.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
HADRAT RAIPURI (R.A)
A famous routine of Hadhrat Raipuri (May the
mercy of Allah be upon him) was that he
would gather together all of his followers on
the fifteenth of Sha'baan, meet with them all
and say that he would now see them after
Ramadan if he lived until then. He would also
hand a sack to one of his attendants,
instructing him to collect any mail he receives
so that he would tend to it after the holy
month.
He would spend the entire month in seclusion
and worship, not wishing to check mail or be
disturbed in this precious month. So many
people would come to spend the whole of
Ramadan in the mosque that there would be
no room for anyone‟s bedding after the
nineteenth of Sha'baan. In this manner, the
mosque would come alive with worship and
the remembrance of Allah.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
HADHRAT MAULANA MUHAMMAD
ZAKARIYA (R.A)
Hadhrat Shaykh ul-Hadith Maulana
Muhammad Zakariya (May the mercy of Allah
be upon him) used to say the following about
himself:
My routine was to spend the holy month of
Ramadan in solitary worship following in the
footsteps of our noble elders. I would spend
the whole day reciting the Holy Qur'an, taking
breaks from this only for mandatory and
optional prayers.
One day, an old friend who lived in another
neighbourhood and who was unaware of my
strict Ramadan schedule came to see me. I
replied to his greeting and retired to my
private room to continue my recitation. He
followed me into the room where he sat
quietly as I read until Asr, at which time he
accompanied me to join the prayer.
After Asr prayer, I once again retired to my
room and continued my recitation, and my
friend again followed me in only to see that I
had already started my recitation. After
waiting patiently for a while he said, “My
friend, Ramadan also comes to us but never
like such a fever.” He meant that it seemed
as if the month of Ramadan would
overwhelm me like a fever overwhelms its
victim.
Hadhrat Zakariya further stated that he would
remain in such an enthusiastic state for the
entire month.
Issue 37 www.rabetah.com Sept/Oct 2011

“Those to whom we have given the book (and who) recite it
as it should be recited, those believe therein.” (Al-
Baqarah ..2..12)
It is not enough to merely speak out that we believe in the
book but we must give its right due by reciting. Allah tells us
that anyone may say with his tongue that he believes in his
book but he is not true in saying that unless he recites it.
There are three rights of the Qur‟an which are as follows:
· To recite it correctly in the manner it was revealed and as
the Prophet recited it.
· To try to understand it and to comprehend its truths and
knowledge.
· To act on its teachings and guidance.
If anyone gives it the three rights then he will be said to
have given it all its rights. However, if he fails to give any
one of these rights then he will not have given the full
rights.
The first right is to recite it in a correct manner. Certain
people suggest these days that there is no point in reciting
the Qur‟an like parrots. They say that we must understand
its meaning otherwise there is no use in reciting it (May
Allah protect us from such ideas). This is a deception of the
devil which is being introduced among the Muslims. The
Prophet was sent for different purposes and the Qur‟an
mentions it frequently but two things it mentions distinctly;
“"Our Lord, do Thou send among them a messenger, one
of them, who shall recite to them Thy Signs, and teach
them the book and the wisdom, and purify them.” (2: 129)
Thus, to recite the Qur‟an is a distinct purpose and a pious
deed and reward receiving.
The recital of the Qur‟an is not something to be taken
lightly. The Prophet had taught his companions the
science of recital. Each letter is pronounced in a particular
way and articulated in a prescribed manner. This is known
as Tajweed (The science of recital). It is based on the
Prophet method. Many books are written on this subject.
This science is intact today and the Qur‟an is recited
exactly as the Prophet used to recite. There has been no
change whatever.
Recital in itself is a goal. It is the devil deceiving us if we
say “what may be gained by reciting without
understanding?” To recite without understanding is the first
step. Only after climbing it can we go to the next step.
The Prophet has said, “When anyone recites the Qur‟an,
he gets ten virtues written down for him against each
letter.” He then explained that لما was not one letter but
alif was a letter, laam was a second letter and meem a third
letter. One who recites لما gets thirty deeds credited to
him. Some Ulama have suggested that he gets ninety
deeds because each of these letters is not one but three
letters. That adds up to nine and ten deeds are credited
against each.
We do not value the virtues recorded in the Record of
Deeds but if we are told we would get £90 for a piece of work, we will
understand it. However, the truth is that it is the deeds that are the
currency of the Hereafter. As long as we are alive, we cannot
understand the worth of these deeds. It is only in the hereafter
we will realise that money is worthless. The only question that
will be asked will be concerning our virtues and piety. Then
shall we know the worth of our deeds.
Nevertheless, the Qur‟an is, in itself a means of reward and
excellence, this is why many Muslims even
today recite the Qur'an every morning before
commencing any work. History tells us that in
the early morning, the sound of recital could be
heard from every Muslim house.
The Prophet is quoted in a Hadith as saying
that sometimes a man recites the Qur‟an but its letters curse him
because he spoils them and recites wrongly. A person who is learning
and makes a mistake is excused but one who does not make an effort
to rectify their Qur'an and recites it incorrectly then they will be
questioned by Allah . Therefore, it is the responsibility of every
Muslim that he should recite the Qur‟an as taught to us by the Prophet

There was a time when the Muslims made great sacrifices and
underwent much trouble and difficulty to learn to read the words of the
Qur‟an. It is reported by Bukhari that Amr bin Salmah was only a child
at the time Rasulullah migrated to Madinah. His village was far from
Madinah. He said “Some people of my tribe had become Muslim and I
too had embraced Islam. The biggest asset after belief is the Qur‟an. I
wished to learn the words of the Qur‟an and its science but there was
no one who could recite the Qur‟an in the entire village. So, I used to
hunt the caravan route outside the village and wait for the caravans
from Madinah. When I met a caravan from Madinah, I asked them to
teach me from the Qur‟an if anyone of them knew it. In this way, I
learnt somewhat of the Qur‟an from them. This had become my daily
practice. In a few months, I came to know more of the Qur‟an than
anyone else in our village, and I had memorised more chapters that
anyone had. Thus, when a Masjid was built in the village and an Imam
was selected, the people put me forward because I knew more of the
Qur‟an than other people in the village.”
The Muslims learnt and memorised the Qur‟an in this way. It is the
results of their efforts that the Qur‟an is preserved to this day. It is not
merely the words that are preserved but also the meaning. By the
grace of Allah, the entire exegesis of the Qur‟an is intact today as it
was explained to the Companions by the Prophet . Allah has not
only assured us that He will preserve the Qur‟an but He has also
assured us that He will preserve its meaning.
A Way to Preserve Arabic Language
Here is an example of how its meaning is preserved. Allamah Hamavi
Rahmatullahi Alayh has written the Muajjim Al-buldan describing the
conditions of all well-known cities until his time, and their history. He
has mentioned that there were two tribes in the Arabian Peninsula the
Akkad and Daraib. It was known about them that they did not allow a
stranger from another city or tribe to stay more than three days with
them, although the Arabs are known for their hospitality. When they
were asked to explain this behaviour, they said that if an outsider
stayed with them more than three days then he
would corrupt their language, and he would
influence delivery and pronunciation of words.
They said, “Our language is the language of the
Qur‟an. We have to preserve it,” in this way, Allah
preserved the words and meanings of the Qur‟an.
Therefore, it is very important for a person to go
sit and learn how to pray the letters of the Qur‟an
by a Qari. May Allah give us all the ability to learn
how to read the Qur‟an correctly. Ameen.
y Mufti Moosa Badat Sahib (D.B)
Khalifah of Hadhrat Mufti Mahmood-ul-Hasan Sahib Gangohi R.A
Below is the final part transcript of the inspiring speech
on the importance of a healthy soul for scholars
delivered by Hadhrat Mufti Moosa Badat Sahib (D.B) –
Khalifah of Hadhrat Mufti Mahmood-ul-Hasan Sahib
Gangohi (R.A) at Jame Masjid, Henry Street, Batley as
part of the series of presentations covering the Health of
the Body, Intellect and Soul. Transcripted by Mufti M.
Noman Daji.
The Tasawwuf in the Salaah of the
Holy Prophet Muhammad
The Holy Prophet Muhammad used to perform ‘Qiyam
Al-Layl – Prayers in the Night. Once a companion
(Sahabi) joined the Holy Prophet Muhammad in the
Qiyaam Al-Layl hoping it would be a short prayer. The
Holy Prophet Muhammad completed Al-Baqarah, the
Sahabi was hoping the Holy Prophet Muhammad
would go into Ruku after this but he continued with Al-
Imraan, the Sahabi was hoping the Holy Prophet
Muhammad would go into Ruku after this but he
continued with Al-Ma’idah, the Sahabi could no longer
continue. As you can imagine the recitation of the Holy
Prophet Muhammad would have been with complete
perfection in Tajweed and Tarteel. I say this kind of long
prayer is not possible unless one has the full
concentration and devotion only to Allah, Most High.
Sometimes the Holy Prophet Muhammad used to
perform very long prostration (Sajdah) that Hadhrat
Aishah (R.A) used to touch the Holy Prophet Muhammad
to see if he was still breathing and he could be heard.
She could hear the Holy Prophet Muhammad
supplicating in Sajdah, ‘O Allah! I seek your protection
from your punishment, O Allah! Make me remember
you abundantly, etc heart warming supplications.
The Tasawwuf in the Supplications of the
Holy Prophet Muhammad
Hadhrat Maulana Manzoor Nomani Sahib (R.A) writes
when I wanted to research on Tasawwuf I started
reviewing the supplications of the Holy Prophet
Muhammad and I noticed they were full of spirituality
and Tasawwuf. The Qur'an mentions that when the
verses of the Qur'an were read in front of the
companions their hearts would soften and their faith
would increase.
The point is without learning or knowing the means like
Nahw and Sarf one cannot master the sciences of Qur'an
and Hadith. So how is it possible to purify the Nafs and
Soul without treading this Path of Ihsan and taking
guidance from an expert in this field i.e. Sheikh of
Tasawwuf.
Methods of Zikr as a Treatment of the Heart
The Zikr that is done in a certain way is a cure the Sheikh
might prescribe to his mureed. Once I asked Hadhrat
Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Zakariyya Muhajir Madani
(R.A) that when I do the loud Zikr moving my head in a
certain way I think that the method I do the Zikr is not
Sunnah. It is a cure to treat the heart. However, just Zikr
of Allah Most High is found in the Qur'an and Sunnah
without a doubt and is a primary act. Hadhrat confirmed
that is the correct intention to have.
The important thing in Tasawwuf is to purify the
diseases of the heart like Kibr (Arrogance). Arrogance
was the first sin committed in the heavens by Shaytan.
Another evil of the heart is Hasad (Jealousy). This was
the first sin committed on the earth by the son of
Hadhrat Adam when his Qurbani was not accepted.
Adultery, alcohol consumption, usury, etc are all major
sins and everyone knows them. However, jealousy,
greed, etc are equally major sins and sometimes more
severe as one does not think one is engaged in sin when
he is involved in them. Hence, one needs to strive to
purify his heart from these evils with great concern.
Conclusion
To summarise there are three primary disciplines in
Islam. The third one – Purifying the Nafs and Heart – has
been taken care by the Masha’ikh and Sufiya who are
the experts in this field. The Holy Prophet Muhammad
said ‘I have been sent to perfect good character’.
Humans are made up of both body and soul and actions
related to both the body and soul needs to be
developed.
May Allah Most High give us all the opportunity to tread
this path with sincerity. Ameen.
Adherence to the Sunnah and the
Importance of Pardah
The following is an extract
translated from the Urdu book,
Faizaan e Abdur Rauf, and will
Insha-Allah be continued in
subsequent issues of
Al-Islah.
Allah proclaims in Surah al-
Ahzaab: „The person who obeys
and adheres to the teachings of
Allah and his Rasul , has
achieved great success.‟ (33:71)
A great success is thus that a
person follows and obeys Allah
and His Rasul . A respectable
status in the world, wealth and fame
are not success. True success is
this that whilst living in this world,
Muslim men and women obey Allah
and His Rasul , and rightly so,
as it is a command of Allah that
Muslims obey and follow Allah
and His Rasul
Nabi ’s practices are an
example for us
Allah has sent His most dear and
beloved Messenger to this world
as a model for our guidance. Just
as we send or show a sample of a
product prior to ordering something,
in order to demonstrate what kind of
end-product we require, similarly,
Allah expresses that He requires
all Muslim men and women to live a
life like that of His beloved Nabi .
“Certainly, there is for you, in the
Messenger of Allah , an
excellent example.” (33:21)
Pious people of faith have given the
following example; when we want to
have some clothes sewn, we give
the tailor a pair of clothes for
accurate measurement and one for
the style and design which we
require. The tailor will sew the
clothes according to the sample
which was provided to him. When
the Tailor delivers the products to
us, we will compare them to the
sample to see whether the size and
design has accurately been
replicated or not. If there has been
some fault, for instance, if the
clothes have come back slightly
longer or shorter, we will not be
very happy with the tailor and will
argue with him saying, „Well, I‟ll pay
you for your efforts this time,
however, in future, I‟ll have my
clothes sewn by someone else.‟
This was because he had not sewn
them according to the sample
provided.
Similarly, the pious scholars state
that Allah has sent his beloved
Messenger as an example so that
our lives can be lived in accordance
to his life. He is an exemplar of,
eating, drinking, adorning, living in
and out of the house; he is the
example for the complete way of
life. If our life is in accordance to
his life, then we are successful and
will have earned the pleasure of
Our Lord, otherwise we have failed.
Furthermore, it is not to be thought
that Nabi was only an example or
role model for the era of the
Sahabah and is not so anymore. In
fact, the truth is that he is also the
role model for the Taabi‟een, Tab-e-
Taabi‟een, the current generations,
and the future generations, to the
extent that he will still be a role
model for the last humans to appear
before Qiyyamah. Allah ‟s
Maulana Abdur Rauf Sufi Sahib
command for everyone is that every
life is to be lived in accordance to
this example. Allah has
mentioned this in the Qur‟an:
Say (O Prophet ): “If you do
love Allah, follow me; Allah shall
love you and forgive your sins.
And Allah is Most-Forgiving,
Very-Merciful.” (Surah Aal Imraan,
Ayah 31)
It is one thing to love Allah and
then to wonder whether he loves us
or not. However, it is a fact that if
we follow and adhere to the
teachings of Nabi and if we have
obeyed him, then Allah will make
us His beloved. What a great thing
this is and what great status it
holds. This is why at every turn of
our life, and at every opportunity,
our deeds should be in accordance
to the life of our beloved Nabi .
Our pious scholars state that the
Seerah and incidents of our beloved
Nabi are present in numerous
languages including Urdu and
Gujerati, therefore, we should study
these and then structure our lives
accordingly.
May Allah enable us to act upon
every Sunnah of our beloved
Rasulullah and include us
amongst His most beloved
servants. Aameen
Al-Islah contains sacred
verses of the Holy Qur'an
and the Ahaadith of the
Prophet .
Please ensure its sanctity.
Maulana Raashid Pakwashi Sahib
By Maulana Raasheed Pakwashi
Today's widespread suffering and the chaotic state of our
society gives a clear indication of our state of spiritual
bankruptcy. The prevalent moral degradation is a clear
manifestation of man’s enslavement by his Nafs. Allah clearly
states in the Glorious Qur’an with regards to the Nafs;
“Successful is the one who purifies (and tames) his Nafs. And
unsuccessful is he who becomes enslaved by it (the
Nafs).” (91:8)
O Muslims, Ramadan is here!! For the entire year, both the
Shaytaan and the Nafs have tried tirelessly to strip us of our
Imaan and drag us into the abyss. Finally in this blessed
month Shaitaan has been shackled. Nothing stands between
us and our Nafs. Now is the time for us to smash it into
submission – into submission of our Lord, our Creator and
Sustainer. This month is an eagerly anticipated and honoured
guest from Allah, offering us the opportunity for spiritual
rejuvenation and self reformation.
Our beloved Prophet has said: “If my Ummah knew the
value of Ramadan, they would wish Ramadan to prevail the
entire year.”
Hadhrat Hasan Basri RA says:
The security of the heavens is with Jibra'eel , as long as he
stays in them, the skies will be secure.
The security of the earth is through the Prophet . As long as
he is here, the dwellers of the earth will remain secure.
The security of the Ummah of the Prophet is with
Ramadan. As long as this Ummah values Ramadan, respects it
and acts upon its rules, they will be safe and secure. For this
reason, the Prophet said: If Allah had desired to punish my
Ummah like the nations of A' ad and Thamud, then he would
not have given either the Surah "Qul Huwallahu Ahad" or
Ramadan.
The following Hadith describe s very aptly and
comprehensively how one should value, respect and act
especially in this month of spiritual healing;
“Have Taqwa of Allah wherever you are. Follow a bad deed
with good deed that it will erase it. Treat people with
excellent manners.” (Tirmidhi)
Taqwa although often loosely translated by “fear of Allah” is
in actuality much more than that. To obtain Taqwa is to gain
complete awareness of ones Lord. This does not merely
include the fear of his wrath and punishment due to
disobedience but also includes genuine hope for his infinite
mercy. Abu Hurairah described Taqwa as imagining
oneself walking on a very narrow, thorn laden path whilst
wearing loose, delicate garments. How would one pass?
Obviously very carefully whilst holding onto ones garments. In
the same way Taqwa is to create a barrier between oneself
and the punishment of Allah, whether this through an act of
obedience or the abstinence from disobedience. It is only
through Taqwa that a person’s piety can be measured.
The Hadith then goes on to describe what one should do if he
is to err and commit sin. It is only human that one will
inevitably neglect ones lord one time or another. What should
be done? Offer an act of piety and this will erase the bad
deed. This itself is a form of Taubah, Taubah literally means
“to return” i.e. Return back to the obedience of Allah.
Finally the Messenger advised to come across people with
excellent manners. This was an important reminder and also
an extension and elaboration of upholding Taqwa, as Taqwa
does not only include the offering of the main pillars of
worship such as prayer, fast and Zakah but it is just as
important to display good manners. In fact good manners has
often been described as the “essence of Deen” and should
never be disregarded.
The month of Ramadan is a time for reconnecting with ones
Lord and the way to do this is through Dua (supplication.
There are two special times when duas are readily accepted
by Allah;
At the time of Iftaar (breaking the fast) and at the time of
Suhoor (beginning the fast).
Musa once requested to see Allah. Allah replied “Oh
Musa, you cannot see me as there are seventy thousand veils
between us. However, I shall give a month as a gift to the
Ummah of Muhammad , called Ramadan. Whoever of the
believers will fast in this month, I shall so manifest myself at
the time of Iftaar, there will be no veil between me and
them.”
This is the time for Taubah and Istighfaar (repentance for
ones sins). A Hadith states that a person who witnesses the
month of Ramadan, but is not forgiven is indeed unfortunate.
How can one with such knowledge let up on such an
opportunity? Allah grant us true understanding. Aameen
Question: To make up missed fasting (period,
pregnancy) can I do it on the six days of
Shawwal, Arafat or other special days of fast?
If yes - do I get double reward? Do I have to
clarify the intentions, declare them for both
matters (missed fasting, intention to fast for
Arafat for example)?
Answer: One may make up for the missed fasts on
these days. The intention should be clearly that of
missed fasts only. It is hoped, from the mercy of Allah
, that one will receive the virtues of these special
days as well.
As a general rule, one should try and complete all
missed fasts as soon as possible.
Question: Please could you tell me if the six
days of fasting in Shawwaal - is to be done on
the first six days after Eid or any days of
Shawwaal?
Answer: The six days of fasting in Shawwal may be
kept anytime in Shawwaal. (Tirmidhi)
Question: If a person has had a wet dream, will
this affect his fast?
Answer: A wet dream does not break the fast, nor
does it render it makrooh.
(Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daaimah, Vol.10, pg. 274)
Question: I am 30 weeks pregnant? Is it
compulsory upon me to fast or am I excused?
Answer: If you are unable to fast, you will be excused.
You will have to make Qadhaa (make up) for the
missed fasts of Ramadan.
Question: I have heard the terms Qadhaa and
Kaffarah many times. What do they mean? And
in which situations does one have to make
Qadhaa of his fasts and make Kaffarah?
Answer: Qadhaa means repeating the fast. A person
does only Qadhaa when he hadn’t started the fast in
the first instance.
However if one starts a fast and breaks it intentionally
without any valid excuse he must perform Qadhaa and
Kaffarah.
To perform Kaffarah one must fast consecutively for
60 days. If for some reason a day is missed during the
60, he/she must start again from the beginning.
(Bahisti Zewar Vol 3, pg 209)
Question: What are the virtues of doing I’tikaaf
in Ramadan?
Answer: There are many virtues of observing I’tikaaf.
A person doing I’tikaaf is sacrificing himself and his
time, just for the sake of worshipping Allah
Whilst doing I’tikaaf he keeps himself safeguarded
from all worldly matters, affairs, arguments and sins.
Waiting for the time of Salaah and Jamaah.
He is like the angels who spend their entire time
worshipping Allah .
The Masjid is the house of Allah and the Mu’takif
spends his time in the Masjid. Therefore he is a guest
of Allah .
This was a Sunnah of Rasulullah which he practiced
throughout his lifetime and never missed.
Question: Am I allowed to leave the Masjid to
do fresh wudhu whilst in I’tikaaf?
Answer: Because it is appropriate for the person in
I’tikaaf to be in the state of wudhu at all times, he is
allowed to leave the Masjid to perform wudhu if he is
not in the state of wudhu. Before sleeping it is
incorrect to base this ruling on doing fresh wudhu
which is mustahab.
(Fatawa Rahimiyyah vol.3 page 148)
Question: Does Sehri substitute the intention
for fasting?
Answer: Even if one did not state the intention of
fasting at the time of Sehri, eating the Sehri is in itself
the intention for fasting.
(Fatawa Rahimiyyah vol.3)
What is the most
aluable
Asset?
By Apa R. Bint Ilyas
Today in this advanced age we have been blessed with
countless favours from Allah , but one blessing that is
seriously undervalued is in the form of our parents. It is
a great regret that nowadays we don‟t even see our
parents as a blessing from Allah , when in reality they
are a source of immense Barakah and a form of
accepted Duas for their children. The truth is we have
not recognised their status. So what is their status?
In the following verse of the Qur‟an:
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but
Him, and say that you be good to parents. If any one of
them or both of them reach old age, do not say to them
„uff‟ (a word of contempt) nor scold them, but address
them with respectful words and submit yourself before
them in humility out of compassion and say „oh my Lord,
be merciful to them just as they brought me up in my
childhood.” (17:23-24)
Allah has ordered mankind of showing kindness and
obedience to parents, directly after the order of
Tawheed, displaying how important an action it is. And
similarly in a Hadith the prophet has mentioned:
اَلَِْبَائِرُ:‏ اََّلْ‏ ‏ِشْرَاقُ‏ بِاللِ,‏ وَ‏ ‏ُِقُوْ‏ قُ‏ الْوَ‏ الِدَيْنِ,‏
وَ‏ قَتْلُ‏ النافْسِ‏ , وَ‏ الْيََِّيْنُ‏ الَََُّْوْ‏ سُ‏
The major sins are: to associate partners with Allah,
disobeying parents, killing a human being and the
immersing oath. (Sahih Bukhari)
Showing us how severe a sin disobedience of our
parents is as it is mentioned directly after disbelieving in
Allah.
Our beloved prophet has mentioned in a Hadith
reported by ibn Majah Rahmatullah Alayh “That your
parents are either Jannah for you or Jahannum.”
Meaning that if you obey them, please them and serve
them, then through their Duas you will attain Jannah. On
the other hand if you disobey them, upset them and are
unpleasant to them, then Allah‟s wrath will fall upon you,
and you will be sentenced to the punishment of the fire
of hell. The prophet has narrated that there are 3
categories of people whom Allah will not show mercy to
on the day of Qiyyamah, one of those categories is
those who disobey parents. Obedience to parents is
extremely important, as Allah postpones the punishment
for all sins as he wishes until the day of Qiyyamah,
except disobedience to parents, for Allah hastens its
punishment and brings it upon him before he dies.
Therefore disobedience of our parents will bring
destruction in our worldly daily lives, destruction at the
time of death and destruction in the hereafter, and then
we complain and moan that we cannot find peace and
success in our worldly lives and try and find faults, when
we ourselves are to blame.
The books of Ahaadith are filled with numerous stories
regarding parents, here are a few:
The companion of Hadhrat Musa in Jannah.
Once Hadhrat Musa asked Allah to show him who
his companion would be in Jannah. Allah instructed
Musa to go to a certain place, where he would find a
butcher. Allah told him this will be your companion.
Hadhrat Musa stayed the day with this person to see
the reason why he would be granted such a noble
position. During the day Musa did not see any
special action, and asked if he could spend the night
with him. When they reached to his house, the butcher
prepared some food and took it to an elderly woman
who was his mother and fed her. Musa saw her utter
a few words in prayer. Musa inquired what she had
said; she replied “I asked Allah that he makes my son
the companion of Musa in Jannah.” Musa upon
hearing this informed her that her Dua had been
accepted.
Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah Alayh „s father passed away
when he was very young. Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah
Alayh lost his eyesight at a very young age, and the
doctors were unable to cure him. His mother, on the
other hand still continued to make Dua to Allah. She is
reported to have said “I have cried so much that I
thought my kidneys would burst.” One night in her
dream she saw Ibrahim , saying to her: “Due to your
constant supplication, Allah has returned the eyesight of
your child.” Upon checking Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah
alayh his eyesight had been restored.
My dearest readers, it is mentioned in a Hadith that there
are three Duas that are accepted; one of them is a
parent‟s Dua for their child. So then, does this not
compel us to do those actions upon which our parents
will pray for us? As we can see from these two stories,
the power of a mothers Dua for her child.
In a Hadith in Bukhari and Muslim the prophet has
mentioned:
اِنا خَ‏ يْر التاابِعِيْنَ‏ رَجُلٌ‏ يُقَالُ‏ لَهُ‏ اَوَ‏ يْس
“That the greatest of all Tabi'een is Uwais Qarni.” Why
was this? The prophet further mentioned, “ “ he
had a mother and for her service he sacrificed the
company of Rasullullah .
لَهُ‏ وَ‏ الِدَة
My readers, think about the sacrifice he made, Islam is
not about following your whims and desires, it is about
following the teachings of Allah and His beloved
prophet . Imagine Hadhrat Uwais was alive in the time
of the prophet , and his desire would have been to see
“ رضي هللا ‏ِنهم و رضوا ‏ِنه“‏ his beloved and attain the title of
” Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with
Him” a title of a Sahabah. Instead he sacrificed his
desire and wholeheartedly rendered his service for his
mother. On the contrary, the prophet told his
companions that when the caravans and groups come
from Yemen, look for a man called Uwais, and ask him
to make Istighfaar for you, for his Dua will be accepted.
Subhanallah, just imagine the status he achieved on just
fulfilling the rights of his mother.
Dear reader there are countless, multiple, easy rewards
that can be earned by fulfilling the rights of our parents
by doing the smallest and simplest of actions; for
example it is mentioned in a Hadith that the reward of
looking at ones parents with love is equal to an accepted
hajj. The Sahabah upon hearing this said what if we
were to look a hundred times in the day? The prophet
replied Allah is extremely great and pure!
Unfortunately though, the reality is we have been so
influenced by the western culture that we have stooped
so low, that we have begun to treat our parents like
secondary citizens. We don‟t even hesitate in rebuking
our parents, speaking back to them, going against their
wishes, throwing in their faces words like “it‟s my life” or
we become agitated at being told to do the simplest of
tasks or when advised, and say to ourselves words like
“here she goes again” or maybe to them “DAD!, I‟ve
heard it all before”.
My readers, our parents are our very means of
existence, if it were not for them we would not have been
in this world. In every little thing they do for us there are
countless hidden favours. Even then we sacrifice our
parent‟s happiness for our own; we disobey them to
listen to our friends and peers. Our friends will only be
our friends for a while, whereas our parents will always
be our parents. In our times of need and hardship our
friends will not want to know us, only our parents will
come to our need. We will only understand the true value
of our parents when they have left this world, but then it
will be too late, and we will only have regret and
remorse.
So let us leave this life of disobedience for a life of
obedience, because as mentions beautifully in a Hadith:
رِ‏ ضَى الرابِّ‏ فِيْ‏ رِ‏ ضَى الْوَ‏ الِدِ‏ وَ‏ سَخَ‏ طُ‏ الرابِّ‏ فِيْ‏ سَخَ‏ طِ‏ الْوَ‏ الِدِ‏
“When they are pleased Allah is pleased and when they
are displeased Allah is displeased” So let us value this
great blessing of Allah and fulfil its due right. When they
are alive we should pray for them and when they are no
longer with us continue to pray for them. We should pray
that Allah always showers mercy upon them during their
old age, at the time of their departure from this world and
during each stage of the hereafter. And let us serve them
and please and obey them.
Because when parents are obeyed and their rights
fulfilled then, someone becomes the companion of Musa
in Jannah, and someone becomes the best of
Taabi'een, and someone‟s eyesight is returned and goes
on to become a great Muhaddith with photographic
memory and renowned and honoured and respected not
just in his time but till the end of time.
So let us take heed from this and make it a firm
resolution to obey our parents and strive to become a
means of coolness of their eyes. So may Allah grant us
all the Tawfeeq to act upon what has been said. Ameen.
Dua For Parents
Rabbir Hamhumaa Kama Rabbayaanee Sagheeraa
Oh my Creator! Have mercy on both of them (my
parents) as they have brought me up (with love)
from childhood.
By Sister in Islam
Dear Sisters
For any major event that occurs
in our lives, whether it be
weddings, holidays or the birth of a
new baby, we constantly count down the
days to the extent that we even count the
hours and the minutes. Having entered the
greatest month of the year, what has been our
preparation?
Samosas, chicken sticks, rolls, half moons, pastries…and
the list goes on and on and on, filling our freezers to the
max… Of course, by preparing these delicacies before
Ramadan, we manage to free up time in the month for
worship; but have we given a thought to what our
spiritual preparation should have been?
Indeed all the efforts we make for the family are NOT
excluded from Ibadah, however a Muslim woman;
whether mother, sister, wife or daughter, is the
fortitude of a family, and she should plan for an
effective Ramadan, not only for herself but also for her
family.
It is not every day that we are blessed with the rewards
for our Ibadah as we are in Ramadan; for every fardh
performed in this month the reward is multiplied 70
times. This means for praying just one fardh salaah, we
are gaining the reward of praying 70 faraaidh. This
Thawaab is further multiplied on Fridays
where each deed is multiplied by a
further 70 times meaning each act is
multiplied by 1,400 times. Moreover,
each Nafl act gains the same reward
as that of a fardh act.
Ramadan is the month of the
Qur'an. We all know that the first
revelation to come down upon our
beloved Prophet Muhammad
happened in this very month,
therefore, to honour this
connection between Ramadan
and the Qur’an; we should
recite as much Qur'an as
possible. Again, the rewards
are unlimited.
According to a Hadith
narrated by Hadhrat Ibn
Masood our beloved
Prophet Muhammad has
said; whosoever reads one
letter of the book of Allah, he
is credited with one blessing,
and this one blessing is worth
10 blessings. I do not say that
(alif laam meem) is one letter, but (alif) is one letter,
(laam) is one letter and (meem) is one letter.
So, normally for each letter we collect 10 rewards,
however in Ramadan, for each letter we are gaining
700 rewards, so by just reciting Tasmiyyah (Bismillahir-
Rahmanir-Rahim), we have already gained 13,300
rewards. And that’s not all; for recitation on a Friday,
because each deed is further multiplied by 70, the
reward of just praying Tasmiyyah would be 931,000
rewards. Sisters, I’ll leave it to your imagination to
wonder how much Thawaab is to be gained by reciting
a portion of the Qur'an.
There are also many other extra Ibadaat that we can be
doing whilst cooking, cleaning and going about our daily
lives. Of these Hadhrat Sheikh (RA) recommends 4 main
things:
1. First, the recitation of Kalimah Tayyibah, which in
the Ahaadith is mentioned as the highest form of Zikr.
In Mishkat Shareef, Hadhrat Abu Saeed Khudri
reports: "Once Prophet Moosa begged of Allah to
grant him a special verse by which he might remember
Allah and also ask of him." Thereupon Allah asked him
to recite this Kalimah. Hadhrat Moosa said: "O
Allah, this is a verse recited by all Your servants; I
desired a special one. Allah replied: "O Moosa, if the
seven heavens, the earth and all its occupants except
Myself are placed in one pan of the scale and this
Kalimah on the other, the Kalimah will outweigh
everything."
2. The second form of Dhikr that should be recited
excessively is Istighfaar (asking for Allah's forgiveness).
Several Ahaadith report the virtues of Istighfaar. In one
Hadith we read “Whoever says a great deal of
Istighfaar, Allah opens a way out for him from all
difficulties and releases him from sorrows. In a similar
manner, he receives his provisions from unexpected
sources.” In another Hadith, our beloved Prophet
Muhammad has said, "Every man is a sinner, but the
best of the sinners are those who repent and seek
forgiveness."
3. The third thing we need to ask for is entrance into
the bountiful Jannah.
4. And fourthly, ask for safety from the fire of hell
Dear Sisters, Alhamdulillah Allah has blessed us with
this auspicious month! Let us take maximum benefit of
all the goodness on offer for us from this minute
onwards. Who knows if we will live beyond this day
never mind until the next Ramadan?
May the Almighty Allah give us Barakah in
our time and may He give us all the
Tawfeeq to make the most of this
month, Ameen
How to
spend
Ramadan
The month of Ramadan is the season of divine blessings. It is the month of purification. It is meant for annual
reformation of the inner spiritual qualities. It is a golden opportunity for every Muslim to strengthen his „Iman‟, to purify
his heart and soul and to remove the evil effects of the sins committed.
This month invites a Muslim to minimize his other daily involvements and maximize the acts of worship. One should
plan his schedule for this month, before-hand, so as to spare maximum time for „Ibadah.
Here is a brief list of the acts which should be carried out in Ramadan with due care:
1. To offer every prayer with Jama‟ah (congregation) in the Masjid.
2. To rise up a little earlier than the exact time of Suhoor and to offer the Salaah of Tahajjud. There is no prescribed
number of the Tahajjud prayer. Yet, it is better to pray 8 Rak‟at.
3. To offer the Nafl prayers of Ishraaq (two rak‟at after the sunrise) Duha (Four rak‟at which may be performed at
anytime after Ishraaq before noon) and Awwabeen (six rak‟at after Maghrib).
4. The recitation of the Holy Qur‟an. No specific limit is prescribed. But one should recite as much of it as he can.
5. Dhikr or Tasbeeh, specially the following recitations:
subhanallahi wa bihamdihi subhanallahil azeem
Subhanallah walhamdulillah wal'aa ilaha illallah wallahu akbar
Astaghfirullah Rabbi min Qulli Zambin Wa Aatubu Ilaih
La Hawla wa Laa Quwatta illa Billahil Aliyil Azeem
By Mufti Taqi Usmani (D.B)
Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin Nabi yil Ummi yi wa Aalihi wa Sahbihi wa baarik wa sallim.
Apart from reciting these words, one hundred times each, at a particular time, they may also be continued frequently
throughout the day, even if one is engaged in some light work, when walking and when in bed.
6. Prayers and supplications: No particular prayer is prescribed. One can pray for everything he needs both in this
world and in the Hereafter. However, the supplications of the Holy Prophet are so comprehensive that they
encompass all that a Muslim can need in his life and after his death. It is, therefore, much advisable to pray to Allah
Almighty in the prophetic words used by the Holy Prophet .
There are several books where these prophetic supplications have been complied. Here is the name of two books,
which should be kept by every Muslim in the home and be used for praying daily:
(i) Al-Hisnul-Hasin By Allamah al-Jazri (ii) Munajat-e-Maqbool By Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi
7. Sadaqah (charity): Apart from paying Zakah, which is obligatory, one should also pay optional Sadaqah in Ramadan
according to his best ability. It is reported in a authentic Ahaadith that the Holy Prophet used to pay special attention
in Ramadan to look after the poor and to help them financially. Therefore, a Muslim should give as much money in
Sadaqah as he can afford.
Optional But Great Reward
Here are the virtues for some Nafl Salaah which one should endeavour to perform, especially in Ramadan.
Ishraaq: It is performed approximately 15 minutes after sunrise. The one who performs two rakaats of Ishraaq
salaah gets the reward of performing one Hajj and Umrah.
Salaatud Duha (chasht): This Salaah is performed when the sun has risen high (approximately midway
between sunrise and zawaal). Among its virtues is that it is Sadaqah for all the 360 joints in the body. One's
(minor) sins are also forgiven. A minimum of 2 rakaats and a maximum of 8 rakaats can be performed.
Awwabeen: Six rakaats of Nafl performed after Maghrib are known as Awwabeen. One's (minor) sins are
forgiven, even if they are equal to the foam on the sea. According to a narration of Sahih ibn Khuzaymah, one is
granted a reward of 12 years of Ibadah.
Tahajjud: This Salaah is performed in the last part of the night. This is the most virtuous of all the Salaahs after
the Fardh Salaah. It is a means of one's forgiveness and a means of safety against committing sins. The time of
Tahajjud is also a special time for the acceptance of duas. It is very easy to perform this salaah in Ramadan due
to waking up for Sehri.
One of the ways to show love to Allah is
following the Prophet , and to do those
acts that he advised his Companions, and
the Ummah in general, to do. A Sunnah
which is certainly relevant to us in these
days is the practice of fasting six days in
the month of Shawwaal.
“Whoever completes the fasts of
Ramadan then adds to them the fasts of
six days in the month of Shawwal, it will
carry the reward of fasting for the whole
year.” (Sahih Muslim)
It is highly recommended to fast six days
of the month of Shawwal, as this is a
meritorious act which results in abundant
reward. The scholars have interpreted this
Hadith by saying that according to the
recognised rules of Shari‘ah, every good
deed is increased 10 times, therefore, the
reward of 30 days of Ramadan amounts to
the reward for 300 days. If these fasts are
followed by six more fasts, they carry the
reward of 60 more days, totalling to 360
days (1 year). Therefore, the Muslims
should take this opportunity of acquiring
such an enormous reward from Allah. It is
more preferable to start these fasts from
the 2nd of Shawwal and keep fasting up to
the 7th of Shawwal. However, it is not
required to fast six days continuously
without any interruption. One can fast
according to convenience any time during
the month.
HADHRAT Jibra'eel ’S CURSE
Hadhrat Jibra'eel once came to the Messenger of
Allah and cursed to eternal Hellfire anyone who did
not repent and have himself forgiven in Ramadan, to
which the Messenger of Allah said Ameen.
An Archangel‟s curse would have been more than
enough on it‟s own as a stiff warning, but the
Prophet‟s Ameen and stamp of approval makes this
curse all the more potent. There is no doubt that
whoever is fortunate enough to live through Ramadan
but does not seek repentance, will be sentenced to
Hellfire.
Eid is a most auspicious day for Muslims as it marks the termination of
month long fasting and devotion to Allah. The Hadith describes Eid as the day
of rewards. In Ramadan Muslims exert themselves in different forms of
spiritual exercises, charities and acts of virtue, the day of Eid signifies a day of
happiness, celebration and gratitude for these favours.
However, what we unfortunately find common is that the auspicious night
of Eid is somewhat spent in lengthy preparations of all sorts and the day
itself is exhausted in over eating and merrymaking. Whilst to prepare the
night before, eat well and be happy is desirable on the day of Eid, one should
avoid excessiveness and remain focused on the lessons of Ramadan and look
to continue with them. Essentially to be conscious of Allah and show
gratitude for His favours and seek from Him abundantly.
The night of Eid is a very precious night . Nabi has stated “Whoever stands
up (in worship) in the nights preceding the two Eids expecting rewards from
Allah, his heart will not die when other hearts will die.” (Ibn Majah). The
dying of hearts refers to the Day of Qiyyamah. To attain these virtues one
should spend some portion of this night in Ibadah, dua and reflection.
The day of Eid should be spent trying to meet relatives, friends and
neighbours for the pleasure of Allah and utilise the opportunity to mend
broken relationships and seek forgiveness from those we may have broken
ties with. It is also a day to remember the less fortunate. Make some effort
to visit the poor and share with them the delicacies of Eid. Also, use the day
to visit the sick, pious and the Ulama and request their duas.
Avoid excessive indulgence of any kind and stay away from places where the
laws of Islam are violated. Use the day profitably to earn the pleasure of
Allah and continue to do so everyday.
May Allah bless all Muslims with a joyous Eid.
How should One Make Taubah?
For one's Taubah to be accepted, the following pre-conditions apply:
* Give up the sin immediately.
* Regret having sinned. Feel the pain in your heart, just as you would be pained
if you lost a million pounds.
* Resolve never to commit the sin again.
The Story of the Revelation of the Qur'an
When Rasulullah was forty years old, the angel Jibra'eel appeared
in the cave of Hira (Jabl-e-Noor) and commanded him to 'Read'
Rasulullah replied that he could not. At this, the angel firmly embraced
Rasulullah and released him. He again commanded him to 'Read' and
again Rasulullah replied that he couldn't. He was embraced again and
released. For the third time the angel commanded him to 'Read' and
again Rasulullah replied that he could not read. The angel then said:
“Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created, He has created
man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who
has taught by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not.”The angel then disappeared.
This Divine incident so affected Rasulullah that he hurried home where he asked his beloved wife Hadhrat
Khadeejah (R.A) to cover him with a blanket. When he had calmed down sufficiently, he related the incident to
Hadhrat Khadeejah (R.A) who comforted him with words of praise, wisdom and encouragement.
When Rasulullah said he was afraid for his life, Hadhrat Khadeejah (R.A) consoled him with the words: 'No,
no. On the contrary, you should feel happy. Allah will never forsake you because you have been loving, helpful,
truthful, and you possess the character which no other man possesses, and you are 'JUST'.
Hadhrat Khadeejah (R.A) took Rasulullah to her cousin Waraqah-bin-Nawfal, who at once confirmed the
signs of prophethood and he stressed that Rasulullah would be persecuted by his
own people. Inspite of this warning Rasulullah continued to visit the Cave of Hira
(Jabl-e-Noor).
It was on this night in Ramadan that the Prophet got revelation. It was also the first
time he had seen the angel Jibra'eel . The Prophet continued to get verses from
Allah over the next twenty-three years. These verses are the Qur'an which we have
with us today.
Prophet said four things you should continue to
perform in great number in this month of
Ramadan;
1.Recite the Kalimah Tayyibah Laa llaaha
illallaah 2.Make much Istighfaar (beg Allah's
forgiveness) with Astagirfirul-laah).
3.You should beg of Allah entrance into paradise.
4.Ask for protection from Jahannum.
Deeds are your money on the day
of judgement, make sure you
collect plenty now in Ramadan.
Do’s & Don’ts of Ramadan
1. Read or listen to the Qur'an.
2. Make lots of Dhikr (remembrance), Taubah and Dua.
3. Do your best to pray all your Salaah on time.
4. Pray the Tarawih.
5. Don‟t gossip and speak without purpose.
6. Don‟t swear, be vulgar or rude.
7. Don‟t get angry.
8. Don‟t cheat or tell lies.
9. Don‟t backbite.
10.Don‟t argue or fight.
11.Don‟t be boastful and arrogant.
12.Don‟t eat doubtful food at Iftaar.
13.Don‟t look at undesirable things.
14.Don‟t listen to music.
15.Don‟t commit any sins and refrain from bad behaviour.
16.Give charity and be generous.
Dua for the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr)
It is reported from Aisha (R.A): “I said : „O Rasullullah , when I find myself in Laylatul Qadr
What Shall I say ?‟ Rasullullah , replied , say,
Allaahumma inaka „afuwwun tuhibbul „afwa fa‟fu‟annii
O Allah, you are the best forgiver, you like to forgive, so forgive me (Mishkat, Ibn Majah & Tirmidhi)
ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE 31st September
Did you know Allah has
provided us with a very powerful
tool – this tool is du‟a.
A Muslim should be asking
Allah for help and mercy when
in times of need, happiness or
sadness.
Ramadan is a month full of
many blessings,, the Prophet
said: „When Ramadan comes, the Doors of Mercy (another
narration says Paradise) are opened, and the doors of Hell are
closed, and the Shaytans are locked up‟
Making du‟a during Ramadan has a greater chance of being
accepted, as the Gates of Paradise and Mercy are opened.
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1899, Muslim 1079)
How can I make my dua more acceptable?
Have Wudhu, face the Qiblah, be neat and clean.
Try to do some good action before making Dua, e.g. giving of
charity or reading of salaah or making Zikr.
To sit as one sits in the Tashahud and to raise one's handswhen
making Dua-with a slight gap between them.
Start dua by firstly glorifying Allah, singing his praises and by
reading Durood Shareef.
Make Taubah and admit ones wrongdoing.
Belief firmly that only Allah can answer such Dua.
Beg Almighty Allah with humility whilst having fear of Allah.
Whilst making Dua, both the words used and the body
should demonstrate humility and piety. Ones voice should
also be soft.
To make Dua from the bottom of one's heart with the firm
belief that only Almighty Allah can answer and accept such
Dua.
One can repeat each Dua at least three times.
To cry whilst making Dua and if one cannot cry, then one
should copy the act of crying.
Not to make Dua for something that is impossible.
When making Dua for others, firstly Dua should be made for
oneself then for others.
Use words of Allah and Muhammad -i.e. Duas found in the
Qur‟an and Hadith.
To ask Allah in every need, whether big or small, even when
in need of something as minor as a shoelace.
Before finishing the Dua, to again glorify Allah and to sing his
praises and Durood then complete the Dua.
Lastly wipe the hands over the face.
Congratulations!
