Correction of Typo Mistake<br />
In the last <strong>Issue</strong> of Al-Islah (<strong>Issue</strong> 38) in the article Blessings From Allah,<br />
pg 11, there was a typo (spell-checker) mistake.<br />
The word “Iman” was incorrectly typed as “Imam” in the whole article.<br />
Al-Islah apologizes for the error and asks Allah for forgiveness.<br />
We have rectified the error on the web copy. Sorry for any inconvenience.<br />

All praise is due to Allah Who has power over everything . May His blessing<br />
be upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad , his family, his faithful companions<br />
who strived to see that the religion of Islam triumphed.<br />
Assalamu Alaikum and welcome to our new look Al-Islah Magazine.<br />
This <strong>Issue</strong> of Al Islah has something for everyone in the family. Please do take<br />
the time out from your busy schedule and go through the magazine. The<br />
success of <strong>this</strong> magazine is due to you; the readers– if you have any articles or<br />
would like to contribute something towards it please do send it to us. We would<br />
like to thank all those who have contributed towards the success of <strong>this</strong><br />
magazine in anyway whatsoever, be it donations, articles, subscriptions or any<br />
other way. We also would like to thank all the Ulamas who tirelessly work on<br />
the magazine too ensure that quality articles are published to benefit the<br />
readers. We pray that Allah accepts everyone's hard work and makes <strong>this</strong><br />
magazine go from strength to strength. “Those who spend their substance in<br />
the cause of Allah , and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their<br />
generosity or with injury, for them their reward is with their Lord: on them shall<br />
be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (2:262)<br />
The Prophet Muhammad said, “Live in <strong>this</strong> world as a traveller who has<br />
stopped for shade under a tree.” His saying is a similitude for our time in <strong>this</strong><br />
world, a period of temporary rest. The Qur‟an talks of <strong>this</strong> world being “as an<br />
hour,” the Hereafter being our permanent home. And as we travel through <strong>this</strong><br />
temporary world and as the months and years are slipping away from us it is<br />
surely a time to contemplate on what we have achieved over the course of the<br />
year. Have we achieved in life what we had set out to achieve? Have we made<br />
changes in our life for the better which we had set out to? Surely the passing of<br />
time is a time to reflect on oneself and make us work towards a better future as<br />
Muslims and as citizens of <strong>this</strong> country. As Muslims let us play our part in<br />
helping and contributing to <strong>this</strong> country the way we have been taught through<br />
the teachings of our beloved of Allah . May Allah help us in achieving <strong>this</strong>.<br />

As the New Year draws closer, many will be finalizing<br />
their list of resolutions to improve their spiritual, physical<br />
or mental lives. As Muslims, how important are<br />
resolutions in our life?<br />
We firmly believe that, before we came into <strong>this</strong> world, we<br />
had already made a resolution and commitment to the<br />
Almighty Allah : And (recall) when your Lord brought<br />
forth their descendants from the loins of the sons of<br />
Adam, and made them witnesses against their own<br />
selves (asking them,) "Am I not your Lord?" They said,<br />
"Yes, we do testify." (We did so) lest you claim on the<br />
Day of Resurrection, "We were unaware of <strong>this</strong>." (7:172)<br />
However, as humans, we tend to forget and not<br />
remember. So let us take a trip down memory lane. We<br />
may recall that, just a few months back, we were<br />
enjoying the blessings of the holy month of Ramadhan.<br />
The month of Ramadhan gave us an ideal opportunity to<br />
reflect upon our lives and to make a firm resolution to<br />
continue our future lives in submission and surrender to<br />
the will of the Almighty Allah .<br />
In fact, as far as resolutions are concerned, they are part<br />
and parcel of every believer‟s daily life. We actually make<br />
a resolution no fewer than 20 times a day whilst we<br />
perform our Fardh and Witr Salaah and read Surah<br />
Fatiha therein which has the following words: [Lord] You<br />
alone we worship and only Your help we seek. Set us<br />
firm on the straight path - The path of those You have<br />
blessed, not of those who have earned Your wrath, nor of<br />
those who have gone astray. (1:4-6)<br />
Finally, as the day comes to an end and the last salaah<br />
of the day is performed, i.e. the Witr Salaah, we<br />
rejuvenate our resolution in the words of the Qunoot: O<br />
Allah we seek help from You. We seek Your<br />
forgiveness. We believe in You. We trust in You. We<br />
praise You in the best manner. We thank You and we are<br />
not ungrateful to You. We leave and cast off the one who<br />
disobeys You. O Allah You alone we worship and to<br />
You do we pray and prostrate. To You do we run and we<br />
are quick in doing so. We hope of Your mercy and fear<br />
Your punishment. Verily, Your punishment overtakes the<br />
unbelievers.<br />
If we ponder over its meaning, it becomes apparent<br />
that, the best resolution we can make is a resolute<br />
commitment to carry out the commands of Allah in<br />
our lives and encourage others to do the same!<br />
The greatest day of our lives is today - „the first day of<br />
the rest of our lives‟. For the believer, every day is a<br />
New Year’s Day because in Islam each day is a new<br />
day...<br />
Hence, before retiring to bed we must take account of<br />
today‟s deeds, of what has been gained and lost. We<br />
should then repent for the atonement of our sins with<br />
utmost sincerity. Life and death are both firmly and<br />
directly in the hands of the Almighty Allah .<br />
If our eyes open up to the truth today in <strong>this</strong> world,<br />
then our past ended last night and now we are<br />
starting afresh <strong>this</strong> morning. We should consider <strong>this</strong><br />
new day in our life as a blessing and an opportunity<br />
granted once again by Allah to rectify any wrong which<br />
may have been committed in the past. We must intend<br />
to practice good deeds and try to fulfill all our obligations.<br />
Insha-Allah, if our resolutions are sincere, we will be<br />
given the ability to do so.<br />
The Prophet of Allah said, “Take benefit of five before<br />
five: Your youth before your old age, your health before<br />
your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free<br />
time before your preoccupation and your life before your<br />
death.” (Ahmad)<br />
A Beautiful Lesson…<br />
One day, a rich father took his son on a trip. He wanted to show him<br />
how poor someone can be.<br />
They spent time on the farm of a poor family. On the way home, father<br />
asked, did you see how poor they are? What did you learn?<br />
The son said... We have a pool, they have rivers. We have lanterns at<br />
night, they have stars. We buy food, they grow theirs. We have walls<br />
to protect us, they have friends. We have encyclopaedias, they have<br />
Qur‟an. Then he added: Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.<br />
LESSON: It's not about money that makes us rich, it's about simplicity and having ALLAH in our lives.<br />

Today, we see so many people that are<br />
wealthy and from prestigious families but<br />
they still have so many problems. We see so<br />
many people with successful careers and<br />
going into further education but they still<br />
never seem to be succeeding. And we see so<br />
many people keeping up with the latest trend<br />
but they still never seem to find inner peace<br />
and happiness. The solution to these<br />
problems is simple. Namaz.<br />
It is narrated by Huzaifah that, whenever<br />
the Prophet happened to face any<br />
difficulty, he would at once resort to Salaat.<br />
(Ahmad, Abu Dawood). This just shows us<br />
that praying Namaz will give you the solution<br />
to all your problems. It is as the Prophet <br />
said, "The coolness of the eyes." It is the<br />
peace of mind and only through it can one<br />
attain peace in his mind, heart, and life. I<br />
have personally experienced <strong>this</strong> and<br />
strongly believe that Namaz, without a<br />
shadow of a doubt makes that difference in<br />
our lives. And no matter how much we may<br />
go looking for happiness it will not come to us<br />
unless we read Namaz.<br />
Our beloved prophet has also said that<br />
when a person stands up in Namaz, the<br />
gates of paradise are opened for him and the<br />
veils between him and Allah are lifted.<br />
This just shows that Namaz is a blessing<br />
from Allah that you and I maybe take for<br />
granted. Allah bestows five favours on a<br />
person who prays his Salaat<br />
His daily bread is made easy for him<br />
He is saved from the punishment of the<br />
grave.<br />
He shall receive his record in his right hand<br />
(on the Day of Judgement)<br />
He shall cross Pul-Siraat with the speed of<br />
lightning and will enter paradise without<br />
reckoning.<br />
Whenever we intend to pray our Namaz we<br />
should always think to ourselves that when I<br />
am in Namaz I am going to<br />
be talking to Allah , praying<br />
to Allah and asking Allah<br />
for anything I want.<br />
“Allah , the Blessed and<br />
Exalted has said: „I have<br />
divided the prayer between<br />
Myself and My slave, into two<br />
halves, and My slave shall<br />
have what he has asked<br />
for.‟ [From Surah Fatiha]<br />
When the slave says, „Praise<br />
be to Allah , Lord of the<br />
Worlds,‟ Allah says, „My<br />
slave has praised Me.‟ When<br />
the slave says, „The Most<br />
Merciful, the Bestower of<br />
Mercy,‟ Allah says, „My slave has extolled<br />
me.‟ When the slave says, „Master of the Day<br />
of Judgement,‟ Allah says, „My slave has<br />
glorified me.‟ When the slave says, „It is You<br />
alone we worship and it is You alone we ask<br />
for help,‟ Allah says, „This is between Me<br />
and My slave, and My slave shall have what<br />
he asked for.‟ When the slave says, „Guide<br />
us to the straight path, the path of those<br />
whom You have favoured, not the path of<br />
those who receive Your anger, nor of those<br />
who go astray,‟ Allah says, „All these are<br />
for My slave, and My slave shall have what<br />
he asked for‟" (Muslim)<br />
We shouldn't think of Salaah as a burden but<br />
rather a prized gift in which we are speaking<br />
directly to Allah .<br />
Some of us pray our Namaz, but are we<br />
giving our full devotion to Allah within our<br />
Namaz? Or has it become a ritual for us?<br />
Can we remember the Surahs we prayed in<br />
the Salaah we just offered, or is our salaah<br />
the inna a‟atayna kal kawthar and the kul<br />
huwallahu ahad Salaah? Do we realise that<br />
in our Ruku and Sujud we are at the feet of<br />
Rahmaan, or is our Ruku and Sujud similar to<br />
a crow pecking; where we hardly lift our<br />
heads and go directly in to the second.<br />
In Bukhari and Muslim, Abu Hurairah tells<br />
us that a man entered the Masjid, wherein<br />
the messenger of Allah was sitting. He<br />
prayed two rakaats and then came to the<br />
Prophet and said salaam. The Prophet <br />
answered his salaam and then said, “Go<br />
back and pray for you have not prayed.” So<br />
the man went back, prayed (two rakaats) like<br />
he did the first time and then came back and<br />
repeated the salaam. The Prophet <br />
answered the salaam and then said, “Go<br />
back and pray for you have not prayed.” So<br />
the man went back, prayed (two rakaats) like<br />
he did the first time and then came back and<br />
repeated the salaam. The Prophet <br />
answered his salaam once again and once<br />
again said, “Go back and pray for you have<br />
not prayed.” He said <strong>this</strong> three times until,<br />
after <strong>this</strong> third time the man said, “By He who<br />
sent you with the truth O Messenger of Allah<br />
, I do not know any better than <strong>this</strong>. Teach<br />
me.” The Prophet then said:<br />
“If you stand up for salaah say „Allahu Akbar.‟<br />
Then read what comes easy for you from the<br />
Qur'an. Then, bow until you are comfortable<br />
in your Ruku‟. Then, stand up until you are<br />
standing up straight. Then, prostrate until you<br />
are comfortable in your Sujood. Then, sit until<br />
you are comfortable in your Juloos. Then,<br />
prostrate until you are comfortable in your<br />
Sujood. And do <strong>this</strong> in your entire salaah.”<br />
We see Namaz as an optional act rather than<br />
a compulsory act. And when our associates<br />
miss their Namaz we just take it lightly and<br />
carry on with our lives. Whereas our beloved<br />
prophet has said “Leaving of Salaah is the<br />
only partition between Iman and<br />
disbelief.” (Muslim)<br />
The main obstacles stopping us from praying<br />
Namaz today are family and wealth. For<br />
many, the main reason may be that not<br />
everyone in the family prays Namaz.<br />
Therefore when it comes to Namaz time and<br />
we‟re with our family we feel too out of place<br />
and embarrassed to get up and pray. Instead<br />
we let it slip our mind and carry on with our<br />
life. But <strong>this</strong> shouldn‟t be the case. Instead<br />
we should excuse ourselves from the table or<br />
gathering etc. and Insha-Allah through our<br />
effort in praying Namaz we may influence<br />
other members of our family to pray too and<br />
Insha-Allah we will get reward in abundance.<br />
So wherever we are whether it is at school,<br />
work, university, family gatherings, shopping<br />
etc never forget Namaz; it should always be<br />
kept as our top priority no matter what the<br />
circumstances may be.<br />
The prophet has said. “The first matter that<br />
the slave will be brought to account for on the<br />
Day of Judgement is the prayer. If it is sound,<br />
then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And<br />
if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be<br />
bad" (Al-Tabarani).<br />
Let‟s make a change by bringing <strong>this</strong><br />
wonderful attribute into our lives. Then, not<br />
only will we find happiness in <strong>this</strong> world but<br />
also in the hereafter.<br />
Abu Qatada bin Rabiy says he heard the<br />
Prophet saying, “Allah has said, "(O,<br />
Muhammad !) I have ordained 5 times daily<br />
Salaat for your followers. I have made a<br />
covenant with Myself that whoever is regular<br />
in performing his Salaat at its fixed hour, he<br />
shall be admitted into Paradise. Those of<br />
your followers, who do not guard their Salaat,<br />
are not included in <strong>this</strong> covenant." (Abu<br />
Dawood, Ibn Majah) .<br />

Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad Al-Ghazali (Rahmatullahi Alayh)<br />
It has been It has been learned that one of<br />
the students of Imam Ghazali (RA), who<br />
acquired a lot of knowledge and spiritual<br />
benefits from him over a number of years,<br />
had a thought in his heart. He thought that<br />
although he has spent a lot of time learning<br />
different branches of religious knowledge<br />
from Imam Ghazali (RA), he still did not<br />
know which of these would be of real help<br />
to him, (which would illumine his grave,<br />
which would be beneficial to him on the Day<br />
of Judgement) and which branches of<br />
knowledge would not be of benefit to him<br />
(on the Day of Judgement), so that he could<br />
refrain from those branches of knowledge<br />
because the Holy Prophet Muhammad <br />
said: "I seek Allah 's refuge from the<br />
knowledge which is of no benefit".<br />
This disciple of Imam Ghazali (RA) kept<br />
thinking along these lines for a few days<br />
and then wrote a letter to Imam Ghazali<br />
(RA) with the view of getting an answer to<br />
his dilemma along with some other<br />
questions. Furthermore, he also asked for<br />
some advice and to teach him a<br />
supplication that he could always recite. He<br />
wrote in his letter that although Imam<br />
Ghazali (RA) has written numerous books,<br />
<strong>this</strong> weak individual is in need of something<br />
that he could always study and always act<br />
upon its injunctions. In reply to his letter,<br />
Imam Ghazali (RA) sent him the following<br />
advices.<br />
IMAM GHAZALI'S RESPONSE TO THE<br />
LETTER<br />
In the Name of Allah (God), the Most<br />
Compassionate and the Most Merciful.<br />
All praises belong to Allah alone, the<br />
Lord of all the universes and blessings and<br />
peace of Allah be upon His messenger<br />
Muhammad and on all of his<br />
descendants and followers.<br />
My dear beloved son and true friend!<br />
May Allah , the Exalted, grant you a long<br />
life for His worship and obedience and may<br />
He enable you to walk on the path of His<br />
beloveds. You should know that the<br />
fountain of all good counsel is the holy<br />
existence of Prophet Muhammad <br />
because the constitution of all counsel is<br />
based on his Ahaadith (traditions) and<br />
Sunnah (outward character and conduct as<br />
well as internal states). Every counsel<br />
(advice) contrary to his Ahaadith and<br />
Sunnah will be of no benefit. Countless<br />
accounts of advices have been written and<br />
told in the light of the Ahaadith and Sunnah<br />
of the Holy Prophet Muhammad . If you<br />
have received any guidance from them then<br />
you do not need any advice from me.<br />
However, if you have not received any<br />
counsel from the counsels of Prophet<br />
Muhammad then tell me, in all these<br />
years, what knowledge have you acquired<br />
from me? My dear beloved son! Among the<br />
counsels of the Holy Prophet Muhammad<br />
, is the counsel:<br />
"A servant of Allah 's involvement in<br />
useless things is an indication that Allah<br />
has removed His special favours from<br />
him/her (or has removed him/her from<br />
His Grace). And if the servant is<br />
spending even a moment from his/her<br />
life on things other than for which Allah<br />
has created him/her for, then it's a<br />
matter of great sorrow."<br />
The Holy Prophet Muhammad has<br />
furthermore said:<br />
"An individual whose state, even after<br />
forty (40) years of age, is such that good<br />
in him/her does not prevail over the evil<br />
in him/her, then [<strong>this</strong> individual] should<br />
get ready to go to Hell."<br />
My dear beloved son!<br />
It's very easy to give <strong>this</strong> advice to all the<br />
people of the whole world but it's very<br />
difficult to act upon it oneself. It's because,<br />
those in whose hearts the pleasures of the<br />
world and following of their desires<br />
dominate, they find the advice and<br />
guidance bitter. These people's hearts are<br />
trapped in the worldly desires and<br />
pleasures. In <strong>this</strong> respect, <strong>this</strong> individual is<br />
worthy of special mention, which learns<br />
wisdom, philosophy and worldly learning<br />
like that and thinks that <strong>this</strong> knowledge will<br />
be a cause of salvation for him/her in the<br />
life hereafter along with earning for him/her<br />
fame and prestige in the world. He/she<br />
thinks that it's not necessary to act on <strong>this</strong><br />
knowledge and that he/she is exempt from<br />
acting upon it. This belief, which is wrong, is<br />
of those who study philosophy. All Glory<br />
and Honour to Allah the Great. This<br />
individual does not even know <strong>this</strong> much<br />
that the knowledge that he/she acquires on<br />
which he/she does not even act upon, will<br />
be a reason for punishment for him/her on<br />
the Day of Judgement. Does <strong>this</strong> person not<br />
know that the Holy Prophet Muhammad <br />
said:<br />
"On the Day of Judgement, the most<br />
severe torment will be given to the<br />
scholar (person of knowledge) to whom<br />
Allah had not benefited from his/her<br />
knowledge (i.e. he/she did not act upon<br />
the acquired knowledge)."<br />
It has been narrated in the traditions of the<br />
intimates (friends/saints) of Allah , that<br />
one saint saw Shaykh Junaid Baghdadi<br />
(RA) in his dream after his death and asked<br />
him:<br />
"O Abu al-Qasim! Inform me about your<br />
state after your death!" Shaykh Junaid<br />
Baghdadi (RA) responded:<br />
"Worships and signs (Isharaat) all turned<br />
out to be useless. But some Rakaat (cycles)<br />
of prayers I did at the time of Tahajjud (third<br />
part of the night) were of benefit."<br />

Fornication or Zinaa is increasingly becoming one of<br />
the most underestimated sins. It is common place now<br />
for young boys and even girls to consider „the more the<br />
better‟. Fornication plays an extremely significant role in<br />
the collapse and degradation of society. In fact today‟s<br />
society does not even consider it to be wrong (i.e. it is<br />
not even considered immoral).<br />
It is rather unfortunate that such sin and evil has<br />
become so rife nowadays. How true are the words of<br />
our beloved Prophet , 'A time will dawn upon man that<br />
Zinaa (adultery) will become so widespread that the<br />
most pious man in <strong>this</strong> world will be that person who<br />
witnesses two people doing evil on the street pavement.<br />
This person would go up to them and tell them to do it<br />
behind a tree. He will not stop them from the evil rather<br />
he would tell them that instead of doing it in front of<br />
everybody, they should go and do their actions behind a<br />
tree. The person who tells them <strong>this</strong> will be the most<br />
pious person. Today, we are presently experiencing the<br />
above, Zinaa is being done openly, everywhere without<br />
any prohibition or obstruction.'<br />
Allah says in the Holy Qur‟aan:<br />

"And come not near unto adultery, verily! It is an<br />
obscenity and an evil way." (17:32)<br />
All practises, things and institutions which aid and or<br />
even lead towards fornication and immodesty are<br />
forbidden by Islam.<br />
Allah is aware of the sneaky movement of the eye<br />
as it casts a lustful glance. He is also aware of the evil<br />
thoughts, ideas and images that are conjured up in the<br />
heart.<br />
The realisation that Allah is aware of these evil<br />
activities creates a sense of shame, regret and guilt<br />
within the heart resulting in Taubah (repentance). This<br />
verse is therefore a wonderful prescription for people<br />
suffering from the disease of lustful gazes and thoughts.<br />
However, <strong>this</strong> remedy is only effective when applied<br />
practically over a period of time. Constant meditation<br />
upon the contents of <strong>this</strong> aayah, coupled with Zikrullah<br />
(the remembrance of Allah ) and wazaif (daily prayer),<br />
will develop the desired level of determination to abstain<br />
from <strong>this</strong> sin.<br />
However the original and only cure from all spiritual<br />
aliments is determination and will power. It is reported in<br />
a Hadith Qudsi "The (evil) gaze is a poisonous arrow<br />
from the arrows of Iblees (Satan). He that abstains from<br />
it out of my fear, I will grant him in return such Imaan<br />
(faith), the sweetness of which he will experience within<br />
his heart." (Ibn Katheer )<br />
Islam's answer to <strong>this</strong> sin is marriage. For those who<br />
do not have the means to marry Allah says in the<br />
noble Qur‟aan “And let those who find not the means to<br />
marry keep chaste until Allah enriches them of His<br />
bounty. (Nur 24:33).<br />
A Hadith in Bukhari relates “He who is not able to<br />
marry, the way for abstinence for him is to keep fast."<br />
He is also reported to have said, "O Young men, those<br />
of you can afford to marry should marry because <strong>this</strong> is<br />
a means to restrict the eyes, to cast an evil look and to<br />
keep pure and chaste; and the one who cannot afford<br />
should fast because fasting helps keep down the<br />
Passions."<br />
It is human nature that is reflected in the desire for a<br />
woman in a man's heart and for a man in a woman's<br />
heart. If <strong>this</strong> desire is fulfilled through marriage it grows<br />
in their hearts true love and pure thoughts. If <strong>this</strong> desire<br />
is achieved through prohibited relationships it will lead<br />
them to impurity of thoughts and grow evil in their<br />
hearts. Marriage is, therefore, a means to purity and<br />
keeping away from evil. It must also be remembered<br />
that the natural inclination for each other in man and<br />
woman should not be referred to as an ugly or evil<br />
passion. To refer to it in that manner is a grave mistake.<br />
It is Allah Himself who has put <strong>this</strong> inclination in male<br />
and female. He has inclined them instinctively in that<br />
manner to further certain designs which He has willed<br />
for human beings. However, misuse of <strong>this</strong> inclination<br />
through unlawful means will lead the perpetrator to evil<br />
and impurity.<br />
In short, the main purpose of marriage is exactly what<br />
Allah has stated in the Qur'an - marry with the sole<br />
aim of abstaining from illicit sexual behaviour.<br />
You may marry with the intention of obtaining Taqwa<br />
(the fear of Allah and deep devotion to Him) and<br />
restraining yourself from unchaste, immoral actions;<br />
your aim should not be to merely have sexual relations.<br />
Besides, when a man marries he becomes<br />
responsible and alert. He endeavours to earn a living<br />
and is afraid of doing anything that is unnecessary. He<br />
has the qualities of love, faithfulness and modesty. He is<br />
very careful in spending and is protected from many<br />
diseases.<br />
Marriage is instrumental in ensuring that the partners<br />
enjoy good health, are content, satisfied, happy,<br />
economical in spending, progressing in <strong>this</strong> life and<br />
hopefully in the hereafter. Marriage is simply<br />
advantageous; there is nothing better than it for<br />
civilisation. It helps the nation and country. It is a<br />
medical prescription against illnesses and disease. We<br />
leave you with one final thought. If the natural law of<br />
marriage did not exist and was not operative among<br />
human beings, the world would be lonely and deserted.<br />
There would be no idea of a „home‟, in fact there would<br />
be no concept of society.<br />

‘Moral Conduct’<br />
My brothers! 90% of the role played in moral<br />
conduct is by the tongue. Bitter words uttered<br />
by the tongue break people‟s hearts, turn a<br />
friend into a foe, make a person to lose his<br />
reputation, cause him to become morally<br />
corrupt and consequently lead him to<br />
abandon his faith. In comparison, good<br />
manners and mild words spoken by the<br />
tongue unite people‟s hearts, make an enemy<br />
become a friend, build a person‟s reputation,<br />
restore his morality and evidently beautify his<br />
faith and make it complete. For <strong>this</strong> very<br />
reason, it is paramount to always keep control<br />
over your tongue.<br />
On one occasion the Holy Prophet . asked<br />
an illustrious companion of his, Muaadh ibn<br />
Jabal , “O Muaadh ! Shall I explain to<br />
you the essence of the complete religion?”<br />
„Complete religion‟ denotes the 30 parts of<br />
the Holy Qur'aan and<br />
a million Ahaadith.<br />
Muaadh asked,<br />
“What is it, O<br />
Messenger of Allah<br />
.?” The Holy<br />
Prophet . drew out<br />
his (blessed) tongue<br />
and took hold of it<br />
with his (blessed)<br />
hand. He instructed<br />

Speech of Hazrat Maulana Tariq Jamil’s delivered on 1 st July 2011<br />
before the Jumuah Khutbah at Madinah Masjid, Batley with regards<br />

Muaadh ibn Jabal with regards holding<br />
back the tongue (saying), “O Muaadh! Keep<br />
control over <strong>this</strong> (tongue).”<br />
He explained to Muaadh ibn Jabal in a<br />
manner that is used in teaching a small child.<br />
He did so, in order to emphasize the fact that<br />
<strong>this</strong> feat (of keeping control over the tongue)<br />
is extremely challenging. In fact, it is the most<br />
formidable deed. Indeed it is easy to keep<br />
huge planes and titanic ships under control,<br />
where as it is difficult to hold back <strong>this</strong> (small)<br />
tongue.<br />
Luqmaan Hakeem is quoted to have said:<br />
“O my son! I have never regretted remaining<br />
silent. Whenever I have been remorseful, it<br />
has been upon the words I have spoken.<br />
Whenever I have suffered any shame and felt<br />
embarrassed, it has been upon my utterance.<br />
I have never been embarrassed due to<br />
remaining quiet.<br />
On another occasion the Holy Prophet .<br />
said to another illustrious companion of his,<br />
Abu Dharr Ghifari , “O Abu Dharr!<br />
Describe to me a couple of deeds which hold<br />
great rewards and are very simple to perform.<br />
However, (I swear) by that Being in Whose<br />
Hands is my life, the humans and jinn will not<br />
be able to present such deeds to Allah <br />
Most High on the Day of Judgement.” Abu<br />
Dharr asked, “O<br />
Messenger of<br />
Allah .! What<br />
are they?” The Holy Prophet . replied, “The<br />
first is keeping control over the tongue and<br />
the other is moral conduct (good manners).”<br />
These two acts are such that the people of<br />
the entire world will be unable to present<br />
them (due to the fact that they were neglectful<br />
of these qualities in <strong>this</strong> life).<br />
My brothers and sisters! Hold back your<br />
tongue from telling lies, backbiting, gossip,<br />
criticising or humiliating anyone and hurting<br />
people‟s feelings. Moreover, using foul<br />
language against anyone is a grave sin.<br />
The deterioration in a person‟s religiousness<br />
(piety) is particularly caused by (the misuse<br />
of) the tongue, especially with regards to<br />
insulting pious people. These pious people<br />
are those who abstain from drinking, stealing<br />
and interest. Satan corrupts such people who<br />
insult the pious, more than anyone else,<br />
through (the misuse of) their tongues. He<br />
makes them backbite or criticise others. He<br />
causes them to display arrogant and stubborn<br />
behaviour. He makes them think of<br />
themselves as superior and others as inferior.<br />
In doing so, he causes them to become<br />
morally corrupt.<br />
Therefore, brothers! Beautify your conduct.<br />
Protect your religiousness from weakening.<br />
Safeguard your home from destruction. Save<br />
your community from becoming immoral and<br />
subsequently from being dragged into chaos<br />
and friction.<br />
Finally, keep control over your tongues!<br />
Always think to yourself (before speaking):<br />
“Will my words be a source of love and<br />
guidance or will they create hatred and<br />
corruption.” Remember that religiousness is<br />
always acquired through acts of worship and<br />
is (sadly) lost as a result of displaying (bad)<br />
manners.<br />
May Allah give us all the ability to practice<br />
upon these beautiful teachings of Islam.<br />

Importance of Pardah<br />

Our noble Nabi used to see Shaytaan<br />
with his own eyes. Consequently,<br />
Hadhrat Umayyah bin Makhshi relates<br />
that a man was eating in the presence of<br />
Nabi and had (presumably) not recited<br />
Bismillah. He had nearly finished eating<br />
all of his food and had just one morsel<br />
left when he recited:<br />
بِسۡ مِ ّٰللاِ اَوَّ لَہٗ وَ آخِرَہٗ<br />
At <strong>this</strong> point, Rasulullah broke into a<br />
smile and mentioned, ‘Shaytaan had<br />
been eating food with him from the very<br />
beginning but when he recited the name<br />
of Allah upon the last morsel,<br />
Shaytaan vomited and threw out<br />
everything which he had<br />
eaten.’(Riyaadhus Saaliheen, Vol 1,<br />
Etiquettes of eating)<br />
The Ulama state that Nabi withا his<br />
own eyes that the Shaytaan had sat to<br />
eat because the man had not recited<br />
Bismillah. Thereafter when the man did<br />
recite Bismillah, our Nabi with his own<br />
eyes that the Shaytaan got up, went<br />
away, and after reaching a distance<br />
away, vomited all that he had eaten. It<br />
was Nabi who saw all of <strong>this</strong> with his<br />
own eyes. We are not able to see such<br />
things, however, the statements of Nabi<br />
are always true. Not a single thing<br />
or saying of Nabi ,regardless of being<br />
great or small by deed, can ever be false.<br />
From <strong>this</strong>, we are able to understand an<br />
important rule regarding our deen, that<br />
Shaytaan partakes from the meal upon<br />
which Bismillah has not been recited,<br />
therefore, if we forget to recite Bismillah<br />
then we should recite it in the duration<br />
of the meal whenever we remember to.<br />
A single deed, various intentions and<br />
countless rewards<br />
The Ulama have also stated that if we<br />
make the following intention whilst<br />
eating; ‘Oh Allah !Whatever strength<br />
or power I gain from eating <strong>this</strong> food, I<br />
shall spend in Your worship’, then we<br />
shall hope to gain full reward for that<br />
food due to the fact that we ate with an<br />
intention (Niyyah) which rendered the<br />
deed of eating into worship. (Ibadah).<br />
If a morsel falls whilst eating and it is<br />
clean then we should pick it up and eat<br />
it. There is no harm in doing so. If it has<br />
been spoiled a little then we should<br />
clean it if possible and eat it up. On the<br />
other hand, if it has been completely<br />
spoiled then it should be placed in such a<br />
place where it would not be trodden<br />
upon. Such is the respect mentioned for<br />
food. Nowadays, we totally disregard<br />
the respect for food and the food which<br />
ends up on the floor is forever trampled<br />
beneath our feet; or food is simply<br />
emptied away when the plate is taken to<br />
the tap. In various books, it has been<br />
related to the extent that we should pick<br />
up the fallen grain or morsel and not<br />
leave it for Shaytaan.<br />
Forsaking of the Sunnah is proof of<br />
weakness in faith<br />
Once, a Sahabi was eating his meal in<br />
the company of some wealthy people,<br />
when a morsel of food dropped onto the<br />
floor. The honourable Sahabi picked<br />
the morsel up without bothering about<br />
what others may think. People began to<br />
advise him not to do such a thing as they<br />
were in the company of prominent<br />
wealthy people who would think bad of<br />
his actions, however, the Sahabi <br />
proceeded to pick it up and eat it<br />
remarking, ‘Why should I forsake the<br />
Sunnah of my beloved Nabi for the<br />
sake of these foolish ones?’<br />
أأترک سنۃ حبیبی لھؤ الء الحمقاء<br />
The Sunnah of my beloved Nabi is<br />
that if any grain of food were to fall onto<br />
the floor whilst eating then we should<br />
pick it up and eat it. Let the worldly ones<br />
think and do as they please, however, I<br />
shall never forsake the Sunnah of my<br />
beloved Nabi for their sake.<br />
Today, we find so many of our fellow<br />
Muslims who forsake the teachings of<br />
deen because of what others may think,<br />
whereas in fact, the teachings of our<br />
deen should never be forsaken for such<br />
reasons. If we pause to muse over what<br />
others may think then perhaps we would<br />
have to forsake the entire deen.<br />
Regardless of what others may think or<br />
say, we must practise our deen correctly<br />
and uphold the teachings of our deen.<br />

Women’s<br />
Role in Life<br />

A woman is the cornerstone of society. She is a daughter, a sister, a<br />
wife and a mother, all caring, nurturing roles within which she has the<br />
opportunity to actively change society and shape the future<br />
generation. Each of the above mentioned roles require her to rear<br />
those around her in some way or another. This is no straightforward,<br />
effortless task. To do justice to <strong>this</strong> mountain of a mission she needs<br />
encouragement, motivation and stimulation; where better to find it<br />
than in the stories and lives of the pious predecessors? For any<br />
substantial and important duty, we take inspiration from those greater<br />
than us, so let us delve into the past, into the time of Rasulullah <br />
and see what lessons we can learn and what pieces of advice we can<br />
take to apply into our lives today.<br />
The Daughter – Hadhrat Fatimah [RA]<br />
We all know of Hadhrat Fatimah‟s love for Rasulullah and indeed<br />
Rasulullah ‟s deep love for his daughter. We hear of Hadhrat<br />
Fatimah‟s dedication and commitment to her father, how she would<br />
run to his defence when he was being persecuted though she was<br />
herself only a child. In one instance the Prophet was reading<br />
Salaah near the Ka‟bah, as he went into sajdah the disbelievers<br />
places the intestines of a camel on Rasulullah ‟s back. Due to the<br />
weight he was unable to lift his beloved head. Hadhrat Fatimah, a<br />
young girl at the time, ran to him weeping, trying to relieve him of <strong>this</strong><br />
burden. Rasulullah consoled her saying, "My daughter, do not cry,<br />
for certainly, Allah will protect your father!" The young Fatimah<br />
witnessed such scenes of vicious opposition and harassment against<br />
her father and the early Muslims but she did not meekly stand aside<br />
rather joined in the struggle in defence of her father and his noble<br />
mission.<br />
After Hadhrat Fatimah [RA] married, her life with Hadhrat Ali was<br />
as simple and frugal as it was in her father's household. In fact, so far<br />
as material comforts were concerned, it was a life of hardship and<br />
deprivation. Throughout their life together, Hadhrat Ali remained<br />
poor because he did not set great store by material wealth.<br />
In fact, it could be said that Hadhrat Fatimah's life with Hadhrat Ali <br />
was even more rigorous than life in her father's home. At least before<br />
marriage, there were always a number of ready helping hands in the<br />
Prophet's household. But now she had to cope virtually on her own.<br />
To relieve their extreme poverty, Hadhrat Ali worked as a drawer<br />
and carrier of water and she as a grinder of corn. One day she said to<br />
Hadhrat Ali : "I have ground until my hands are blistered."<br />
"I have drawn water until I have pains in my chest," said Hadhrat Ali<br />
and went on to suggest to Hadhrat Fatimah: "God has given your<br />
father some captives of war, so go and ask him to give you a<br />
servant."<br />
Reluctantly, she went to the Prophet who said: "What has brought<br />
you here, my little daughter?" "I came to give you greetings of peace,"<br />
she said, for in awe of him she could not bring herself to ask what she<br />
had intended.<br />
"What did you do?" asked Hadhrat Ali when she returned alone.<br />
"I was ashamed to ask him," she said. So the two of them went<br />
together but the Prophet felt they were less in need than others.<br />
"I will (cannot) not give to you," he said, "and let the Ahl as-Suffah<br />
(poor Muslims who stayed in the mosque) be tormented with hunger.<br />
I have not enough for their keep..."<br />
Hadhrat Ali and Hadhrat Fatimah returned home feeling somewhat<br />
dejected (unhappy) but that night, after they had gone to bed, they<br />
heard the voice of the Prophet asking permission to enter.<br />
Welcoming him, they both rose to their feet, but he told them:<br />
"Stay where you are," and sat down beside them. "Shall I not tell you<br />
of something better than that which you asked of me?" he asked and<br />
when they said yes he said: "Words which Jibra'eel taught me, that<br />
you should say "Subhanallah - Glory be to Allah " 10 times after<br />
every Prayer, and 10 times "Alhamdulillah - Praise be to Allah ,"<br />
and 10 times "Allahu Akbar - Allah is Great." And that when you go<br />
to bed you should say them thirty-three times each." Thus <strong>this</strong> is why<br />
<strong>this</strong> Tasbeeh is called Tasbeeh-e-Faatimi)<br />
Thus Hadhrat Fatimah learned the valuable traits and characteristics<br />
of patience, tolerance and hard work, which she also in turn taught to<br />
her children.<br />
The Sister – Ash Shaymaa [RA]<br />
Her name was Huthaafah bint Al-Haarith, known as Ash-<br />
Shaymaa' [RA]. She was the sister of the Prophet by suckling, as<br />
they both suckled from her blood mother Haleemah As-Sa'diyyah<br />
[RA].<br />
Ash-Shaymaa' [RA] loved her brother, the Prophet dearly and<br />
would follow his news step by step. When she heard about his<br />
mission and Prophethood, she immediately believed in him and<br />
supported him because she saw that his message calls for peace,<br />
love, security, tolerance and compassion between people.<br />
When the Prophet attacked the tribe of Hawaazin [her tribe] and<br />
Banu Sa'd were defeated, she was taken as one of the war captives.<br />
By <strong>this</strong> time she had grown old and weak, and her features had<br />
changed. As the Muslims took her in, she told the man who took her<br />
as captive: "I am the sister of your Companion, i.e. the Prophet "<br />
When they presented her to the Prophet she said to him: "O<br />
Muhammad ! I am your sister" and then she gave a sign by which<br />

he recognized her.<br />
Rasulullah welcomed her and was very hospitable to her spreading<br />
his garment for her to sit on. He said to her, as his eyes shed<br />
tears: "If you choose to go back to your tribe, I will send, and if you<br />
chose to stay with us, then you will live honoured, loved and<br />
respected amongst us". She replied: "I prefer to go back" then she<br />
embraced Islam, and the Prophet gifted her with a camel and two<br />
servants (a male and a female) to show her respect and honour.<br />
(Seerat Ibn Hishaam).<br />
She was a devout worshipper and was famous as a poet who<br />
supported and defended Islam and the Messenger with her poetry,<br />
and she remained as such until she died.<br />
The Wife – Hadhrat Khadeejah [RA]<br />
Hadhrat Khadeejah was a very loyal and loving wife and she provided<br />
all the domestic comforts to her husband. But the Holy Prophet <br />
was always spiritually perturbed because of the deteriorating social<br />
and moral conditions in the Arab society. It was but natural of a<br />
Prophet. He was pondering over some rational solution of the moral<br />
problems of the society. In the forthcoming years, he got so much<br />
engulfed in his meditations that he sought refuge, from the everyday<br />
problems in the cave of Hira near Makkah. He made it a routine to<br />
visit Hira and stayed there for weeks altogether for deep meditation<br />
and spiritual purification. Hadhrat Khadeejah stood by her husband<br />
during <strong>this</strong> critical period and extended all help. She was the only<br />
source of solace for the Holy Prophet in those days.<br />
When the Holy Prophet received his first message from Allah ,<br />
he was worried and anxious. Its impact was so upsetting that he<br />
rushed home shivering. The divine light illuminated his beloved face.<br />
He said, “Khadeejah, I do not know what it is. I do not know what is<br />
going to happen. Wrap me in a blanket. Wrap me in a blanket”.<br />
Hadhrat Khadeejah reassured him saying “Don‟t worry, you are a<br />
truthful person. You care for others and are kind to all. You are<br />
honest and hospitable. Allah will not forsake you”.<br />
After declaring the Shahaadah, when the Makkans unanimously<br />
turned against the Holy Prophet and started teasing and torturing<br />
him, Hadhrat Khadeejah stood by her husband. She was his lone<br />
follower and companion. She helped him all she could. She was<br />
loving, obedient, and devoted to her husband. She help solve the<br />
problems he was facing. She used her social status to minimize the<br />
opposition against the Holy Prophet . Due to these factors she was<br />
his most beloved wife. He loved her so much that while she was<br />
alive, he did not marry another woman. In the later years of his age<br />
he used to recall the sweet memories of times passed with Hadhrat<br />
Khadeejah.<br />
The Mother - Umme Ayman [RA]<br />
The Prophet Muhammad said, "Umm Ayman is my second<br />
mother."<br />
Her name was Barakah and she was a maid who served Hadhrat<br />
Aaminah, the beloved mother of Rasulullah and took care of her<br />
son Muhammad . He loved Barakah and regarded her as a<br />
member of his household and family. After the demise of Hadhrat<br />
Aaminah, Barakah came back to Makkah with Muhammad to his<br />
grandfather Abdul Muttalib. It was there that she showed all the love<br />
and affection she had for Muhammad . Any child of Rasulullah ‟s<br />
age at that time, no matter how intelligent and self-dependent he may<br />
be, would still need someone to care for him. Abdul Muttalib<br />
requested Barakah to be cautious and treat Muhammad with<br />
utmost kindness and gentleness.<br />
He told her once, "Barakah, Be mindful of my son, for I had seen him<br />
with children near the lotus tree. The people of the Scripture are<br />
saying that my son is the Prophet of <strong>this</strong> generation."<br />
Perhaps Barakah understood what that meant or, rather, had<br />
witnessed that with her own eyes, heard it with her ears and<br />
understood it with her heart.<br />
She had a narration regarding <strong>this</strong>. She said, "Two men from the<br />
Jews of Madinah came to me one day and they told me, “Bring out for<br />
us Ahmad (also the name of Prophet ) so that we can see him.”<br />
They then looked at him and scrutinized him. One of them told his<br />
companion, “This is the Prophet of <strong>this</strong> Ummah and that is the place<br />
of his migration [referring to Madinah]. There will be a lot of killings<br />
and captivetaking there."<br />
Many years later, after migration to Madinah, Umm Ayman would be<br />
kind to the Prophet and attend to him. Sufiyan ibn 'Uyaynah <br />
narrated that Umm Ayman would be kind to the Messenger of Allah <br />
whenever he visited her enquiring about her condition and<br />
remembering her motherly care and compassion for him. The<br />
Prophet would sometimes pass siesta at her house, one of the few<br />
houses in which the Prophet would seek relief. She also would<br />
present him with food and drink that he loved.<br />
What we understand and deduce from all these stories is the vast<br />
love, devotion and dedication these women showed towards the<br />
Prophet throughout his life. Their whole lives revolved around<br />
these three qualities and it is through these same characteristics that<br />
a whole generation of just, pious and prominent Sahaabah were<br />
brought into <strong>this</strong> world. If we apply even a small portion of these<br />
attributes into our lives today, Subhanallah, I guarantee you the<br />
change in society would be profound. The very nature of a woman<br />
demands from her the role of caring for others; imagine sisters, if we<br />
were to play our part correctly what an impact we could have on the<br />
deteriorating, failing society of today.<br />
May Allah enable us to take benefit from the good of what has<br />
been mentioned and work together towards building a better future<br />

Question: What should a Masbooq (A person who joins the<br />
Jamaat after the first Ruku) who has missed rakaats with the<br />
Imam read in the final qa’dah with the Imam? Is it Tashahud,<br />
Durood and Duaa or just Tashahud?<br />
ANSWER: A Masbooq will only recite the Tashahud, not the Durood<br />
or dua as <strong>this</strong> is not his final qa‟dah. It is preferred that the Tashahud<br />
be recited slowly trying to coincide with the Imam‟s salaam.<br />

QUESTION: Is it permissible for a person to read the 2 rakaat<br />
Sunnat of Fajr Salaat after the Fardh Salaat if there is a possibility<br />
of the Fardh Salaat being missed?<br />
ANSWER: It will be Makrooh to perform the two rakaats Sunnah of<br />
the Fajr Salaah after the performance of the Fajr Fardh salaah until<br />
sunrise. One should perform the missed Sunnah salaah after sunrise<br />
until the pre-Zawaal time.<br />

QUESTION: A person needs to perform his Salaat sitting on a<br />
chair due to a knee problem, does he perform his Salaat while in<br />
Jamaat completely sitting, or does he stand up during Qir'aat or<br />
Ruku? He does not have any problem standing, the only problem<br />
is knee bending (sajdah or attahiyaat).<br />
ANSWER: The Jurists have mentioned that if someone is unable to<br />
perform sajdah (prostration) during Salaat, then the following rulings<br />
apply to him:<br />
Qiyaam (standing posture) is not obligatory on him, he will perform the<br />
ruku‟ (bowing down) and sajdah (prostration) by gesture -- i.e. by<br />
movement of the head -- in such a way that the gesture for sajdah is<br />

A person who is able to stand (make Qiyaam) but cannot make sajdah<br />
has the following options:<br />
1. He may perform the entire Salaat -- including the gestures for<br />
Ruku‟ and sajdah --standing up<br />
2. He may perform the Qiyaam and Ruku‟ standing up and then sit<br />
down to perform the gesture for sajdah<br />
3. He may perform the entire Salaat -- including the gestures for<br />
Ruku‟ and sajdah -- sitting down.<br />
From the three options mentioned above, the Jurists have stated that<br />
the last option (to perform the entire Salaat in a sitting posture) is best.<br />

If a person sits and performs his Fardh and Wajib Salaat due to a valid<br />
excuse, he may sit in any posture during the Qiyaam, Ruku‟ and<br />
Sajdah. However, at the time of reciting the Tashahud, if he can sit in<br />
the Tashahud posture without any difficulty, he should not sit in any<br />
other posture as sitting in the Tashahud posture is Sunnat when<br />
reciting the Tashahud. If however sitting in the Tashahud posture is<br />
difficult, then he may sit in any other posture.<br />
QUESTION: Where should the hind (back) legs of the chair be<br />
placed whist praying Salah in Jamaat? Should the hind legs of<br />
chair be (a) in the same line of other standing persons (upper<br />
part of the sitting person are in the same line with other standing<br />
musallees), or (b) the chair is placed behind the Saff (the feet of<br />
the sitting person match in the same line with other persons in<br />
the same Jamaat)? Or any other option?<br />
ANSWER: A person who cannot do sajdah and who performs his<br />
Salaat sitting on a chair, when he offers his Salaat in Jamaat he<br />
should perform his entire Salaat sitting on a chair and he should place<br />
the chair in the Saff in such a way that when seated on the chair his<br />
body is in line with the body of the other people in the same Saff. In<br />
other words, his body must be in line with the body of the other people<br />
in the same Saff, not his feet. So option „A‟ in the Question would be<br />
correct.<br />

QUESTION: In Jamaat, where in the Saff (row) does a disabled<br />
person place his chair? Could he place it anywhere, at the end of<br />
the row or at the back?<br />
ANSWER: If by praying on a chair, people beside him or behind him<br />
will be troubled or it will create a gap in the Saff, he should either<br />
perform his Salaat in the last Saff or at the end of a Saff where others<br />
will not be inconvenienced or troubled. It is mentioned in a Hadith that<br />
a person who leaves the first Saff for fear of causing trouble to others<br />
will get double the reward of praying in the first Saff.<br />
If praying on a chair will not inconvenience anyone, he may perform<br />
his Salaat anywhere in any Saff. However, he should avoid being<br />
directly behind the Imam as he may not be in a position to assist the<br />
Imam should the need arise.<br />

QUESTION: If a person read Surah Naas in 1st rakaat of their<br />
salaah, then what should they read in the 2nd rakaat? Should<br />
they restart the Qur'aan again and read Surah Baqarah or should<br />
they read Surah Naas again? Also is one allowed to read the<br />
same Surah, same Ayaats twice in the same Salaah?<br />
ANSWER: If a person reads Surah Naas in the first rakaat, then in the<br />
second rakaat he should recite Surah Naas as well, so long as he is<br />
not making a khatm (completion) of the Qur‟an. If he is making<br />
a khatm then he should begin with Surah Baqarah in the<br />
second rakaat.<br />
It will be permissible to read the same Surah or Ayaat twice in the<br />
same salaah, however to do so unnecessarily is disliked Makrooh. If it<br />
is done unintentionally or forgetfully, there is no harm in <strong>this</strong>.<br />

Do you know who Eesaa (Jesus) is?<br />
And - What do Muslims believe in about Eesaa (Jesus)?<br />
As Muslims we believe that Eesaa is a prophet in Islam, just as Muhammad and the thousands other<br />
prophets of Allah .<br />
A person cannot be a Muslim without believing in Eesaa as one of the greatest and holiest prophets of<br />
Allah .<br />
Muslims believe that Eesaa is not God or Lord, nor is he the son of God.<br />
Eesaa was born to Maryam (Mary); his birth in itself was a miracle in that he was born without a father<br />
just like Adam was born without a mother and father.<br />
Eesaa was sent to guide the Children of Israel (Bani Isra‟eel) with a new scripture, the Injeel (Gospel).<br />
Eesaa was given the ability to perform many miracles such as healing the blind, healing lepers, bringing<br />
dead people back to life, giving life to clay birds etc. He performed all these miracles by the permission of<br />
Allah rather than of his own power.<br />
Muslims don‟t believe that Eesaa is the son of Allah , that he is dead or was ever crucified on the<br />
cross nor was he resurrected.<br />
But Muslims believe he was raised up by Allah unto the heavens and is there on the heaven, he will<br />
return to earth near the Day of Judgement to bring justice, to defeat Masih ad-Dajjal (the Antichrist) he will<br />
end all wars and bring peace to the world.<br />
Eesaa will stay on earth for a period of 40 years,<br />
he will follow the Shari'ah (Religious Laws) of our<br />
beloved Prophet Muhammad , and he will marry.<br />
He will have children, and he will remain on<br />
earth 19 years after marriage.<br />
He will pass away and Muslims will perform his<br />
Janazah Salaat and bury him next to Prophet<br />
Muhammad in Madinah.<br />

STORY-THE BIRTH OF EESAA (JESUS)<br />
Ishaaq and Yaqub were great prophets who had many prophets amongst their<br />
descendants. As time went on, the people went astray and Allah sent many prophets to<br />
bring them back to the straight path. These prophets included Musa, Dawud, Yahya and<br />
Eesaa (peace be upon them all).<br />
Maryam was also a descendant of Ishaaq . She was a very kind and pious woman. She<br />
would spend many hours praying in the temple and would give generously to the poor people.<br />
One day, Allah sent the Angel Jibra'eel with a message for Maryam. When she saw the<br />
angel, she was shocked. When Jibra'eel told her that she was soon going to have a baby<br />
boy she was even more shocked.<br />
She asked the angel how was it possible to have a child without a father? The Angel replied<br />
that his birth would be miraculous. Just like Adam was created without a mother and<br />
father he will be born without a father.<br />
When it was time for the child to be born, she went to a far away place. She gave birth to a<br />
lovely baby boy called Eesaa . When the people saw her with the baby they were very<br />
surprised. She pointed to the baby Eesaa who told them that he was a servant and<br />
messenger of Allah .<br />
Even though most people loved Eesaa there were some who wanted to kill him. Allah<br />
saved him and lifted him away into the sky. Many people did not know about <strong>this</strong> and thought<br />
he had been killed. Some people began to say Eesaa was the son of god and began to pray<br />
to him. Soon the people began to go astray again.<br />
Finally, Allah sent another messenger to guide them back to the truth- Prophet<br />
Muhammad who is the last and final messenger of Allah .<br />

Choosing a Soul Mate<br />

Dedicated to those especially who are waiting for<br />
their 'soul mate'...<br />
Once there was a very handsome, pious, well educated young<br />
man, whose parents emphasised for him to get married. They<br />
had seen so many marriage proposals, and he had turned<br />
them all down. The parents thought it was becoming a little<br />
ridiculous or suspected that he may have someone else in<br />
mind. However every time the parents left the girls house, the<br />
young man would always say, "She’s not the one!" The young<br />
man only wanted a girl who was religious and practising,<br />
however, one evening his mother arranged for him to meet a<br />
girl, who was religious, and practising.<br />
On that evening, the young man, and girl, were left to talk and<br />
ask each other Questions. (As one would<br />
expect). The young man being a gentleman,<br />
allowed the lady to ask first.<br />
The young girl asked the young man so<br />
many Questions, she asked about his life,<br />
his education, his friends, his family, his<br />
habits, his hobbies, his lifestyle, his<br />
enjoyment, his pastime, his experiences,<br />
his shoe size. The young man replied to all<br />
of her Questions, without tiring, and<br />
politely, with a smile the young girl took up nearly all of the<br />
time, over an hour, and felt bad, and asked the young man do<br />
you have any Questions?<br />
The young man said, “It’s ok; I only have 3 Questions...” The<br />
young girl thought, wow, only 3 Questions okay, shoot.<br />
The young man's first Question was, “Who do you love the<br />
most in the world, someone whose love nothing would ever<br />
overcome?” She said, “This is an easy Question, my mother,”<br />
he smiled<br />
Second Question, he asked, “You said that you read a lot of<br />
Qur'an, could you tell me which Surahs' you know the<br />
meaning of?” Hearing <strong>this</strong> she went red and embarrassed and<br />
said, “I do not know the meaning of any yet, but I am hoping<br />
to soon, Insha'allah I've just been a bit busy.”<br />
The third Question the young man asked, “I have been<br />
approached for my hand in marriage by girls that are a lot<br />
prettier than you, why should I marry you?<br />
Hearing <strong>this</strong>, the young girl was outraged, she stormed off to<br />
her parents with fury, and said, “ I do not want to marry <strong>this</strong><br />
man he is insulting my beauty, and intelligence.”<br />
And the young man and his parents were once again, left<br />
“If a woman loves Allah and<br />
the Prophet more than<br />
anyone, she will love me and<br />
respect me, and stay faithful to<br />
me, because of that love and<br />
fear for Allah ,and we can<br />
share <strong>this</strong> love, because <strong>this</strong> love<br />
is greater than lust for beauty.”<br />
without an agreement of marriage.<br />
This time, the young mans parents were really angry, and<br />
asked, “What did you do to anger that girl, the family were<br />
very nice and pleasant, and they were religious like<br />
you wanted. What did you ask the girl? Tell us!”<br />
The young man said, firstly I asked her, “Who do you love the<br />
most? She said, her mother.” The parents said, “So, what is<br />
wrong with that!” The young man said, "No one is a true<br />
Muslim, until he loves Allah , and his messenger more<br />
than anyone else in the world."<br />
“If a woman loves Allah and the Prophet more than<br />
anyone, she will love me and respect me, and stay faithful to<br />
me, because of that love and fear for Allah ,and we can<br />
share <strong>this</strong> love, because <strong>this</strong> love is greater than lust for<br />
beauty.”<br />
The young man said, “Then I asked, you read a lot of Qur'an,<br />
can you tell me the meaning of any Surah? And she said no,<br />
because I haven't had time yet. so I thought of that Hadith<br />
"ALL humans, are dead except for those who have knowledge"<br />
She has lived 20 years and not found ANY time, to<br />
seek knowledge, why would I marry a woman, who does not<br />
know her rights, and responsibilities, and what will she teach<br />
my children, except how to be negligent, because the woman<br />
is the Madressah (school) and the best of teachers. And a<br />
woman who has no time for Allah will not<br />
have time for her husband.”<br />
“The third Question I asked her was that, a<br />
lot of girls more prettier than her had<br />
approached me for marriage, why should I<br />
choose you? That is why she stormed off,<br />
getting angry. The young man's parents said,<br />
“That is a horrible thing to say, why would<br />
you do such a thing, we are going back there<br />
to apologise. The young man said, “I said <strong>this</strong><br />
on purpose, to test whether she could control her anger.”<br />
The Prophet said, "Do not get angry, do not get angry, do<br />
not get angry!" when asked how to become pious; because<br />
anger is from Satan. If a woman cannot control her anger with<br />
a stranger she has just met. Do you think she will be able to<br />
control it with her husband? So, the moral of <strong>this</strong> story is, a<br />
marriage is based on:<br />
*knowledge - not looks<br />
*Forgiveness - not anger<br />
*Compromise.<br />
*practice - not preaching,<br />
*spiritual love - not lust.<br />
One should look for a person who:<br />
1) Has love for Allah and the messenger .<br />
2) Has the knowledge of the deen, and can act upon it.<br />
3) Can control their anger.<br />
4) And is willing to compromise.<br />
And it goes both ways, so women seeking a man, should look<br />
for the same things. Insha'allah, may Allah make every<br />
marriage a success, and let us create love for Allah and his<br />
messenger , so that Allah can bless us, and create love in<br />
our lives.<br />

Part 2<br />
The Differences of my Ummah are a Source of Mercy<br />
(Hadith)<br />
The third reason for the contradiction of narrations is that a<br />
group of people may have seen the Prophet doing a certain<br />
thing and they all narrated it according to their own perspective<br />
and understanding.<br />
This is clearly portrayed where there are conflicting narrations<br />
regarding the location of commencement of the Prophet‟s <br />
Ihraam. The solution to these contradictions is provided by<br />
Abdullah bin Abbas who is reported to have said “ The<br />
Prophet en-route to Makkah stopped at a place called Dhul-<br />
Hulayfah. Here he performed two rakahs at the Masjid and<br />
commenced his Ihraam. Whosoever witnessed <strong>this</strong> later<br />
reported that the Ihraam had actually commenced here. After<br />
<strong>this</strong> Prophet mounted his camel. The moment the camel<br />
started rising the Prophet said “Labbayk”. Once again many<br />
people heard <strong>this</strong>. Those who had heard him previously knew<br />
that <strong>this</strong> was the second time. However those who hadn‟t heard<br />
it the first time later narrated <strong>this</strong> to be the location for the<br />
commencement of Ihraam. Thereafter the camel climbed the<br />
summit of Baydaa (it is preferable to recite Labbayk when<br />
ascending a summit) where he said Labbayk loudly. Those who<br />
had not heard it previously now assumed <strong>this</strong> was the starting<br />
location for Ihraam.<br />
Many times certain groups of people witnessed the Prophet <br />
doing something. Some of them considered it coincidental and<br />
regarded it as something natural or habitual whilst others<br />
considered it to be wilful and intentional and therefore narrated<br />
it as a Sunnah.<br />
For example it is an accepted fact that the Prophet camped<br />
at a place called Atbah during the Farewell Hajj. According to<br />
one group of companions <strong>this</strong> act was included as part of a<br />
devotion and an act of Hajj whereas another group believed it to<br />
be coincidental and practical.<br />
At other times the contradictions appear due to the contradictory<br />
underlying causes found in the Ahaadith. For example it is<br />
mentioned in that the Prophet was once seated when the<br />
Janazah (bier) of a disbeliever passed by. He immediately stood<br />
up. According to some narrations he got up in honour of the<br />
angels whereas we learn from other narrations that the Prophet<br />
stood up so that the Janazah of a non-Muslim would not pass<br />
over the heads of the Muslims.<br />
Another reason for the apparent contradictions in the Ahaadith<br />
is that there are many words and phrases which are at times<br />
used in the literal sense and at other times used in the technical<br />
and figurative sense.<br />
The word wudhu is commonly used in its technical sense, but<br />
literally it means to cleanse or wash ones hands. In one<br />
narration the Prophet is reported to have said “Wudhu before<br />
as well as after the meal is a source of Barakah in ones food.”<br />
The word wudhu here unanimously refers to washing one‟s<br />
hands.<br />
Or similarly, there are many reasons and types of injunctions in<br />
each language. The Prophet may have issued a command or<br />
prohibition, in response to which one group considered it to be<br />
compulsory whereas another regarded it to be preferable and<br />
yet another deemed it as mere permission.<br />
At other times the Prophet may have issued an injunction<br />
merely to highlight another relevant issue. For example, the<br />
Prophet once saw a person performing salaah whilst his<br />
lower garment was below his ankles. The Prophet instructed<br />
him to not only repeat his salaah but also his wudhu.<br />
It should now be clear why there can be apparent contradictions<br />
in the narrations and also how only through a complete and<br />
thorough understanding of the Ahaadith, can they be explained.<br />
It is also important to note that it was the companions and the<br />
Imams who had <strong>this</strong> complete understanding and therefore<br />
leads us conveniently to discuss stages 2 and 3.<br />
